Turning a Breech Baby Naturally
When you want to be a mother and finally get to know that you are pregnant, you are obviously overjoyed. It feels good to be pampered and taken care of during those crucial nine months. But not all pregnancies are normal. If your doctor informs you that your baby is a breech baby, i.e., your baby’s head is turned bottom down, you will obviously be worried.
It is normal for babies to be in a breech position in early pregnancy, and by the end of the pregnancy, they will turn. But in case it does not happen, you can follow certain techniques and exercises to turn it the right way naturally.
Techniques to Turn a Breech Baby
Your ultrasound report might have shocked you when you came to know that your baby is in breech position. This may be a matter of concern, but the good news is that there exist a number of techniques to turn your baby in heads down position naturally. If you want to know how to turn your breech baby naturally, refer to the following effective techniques:
1. Light
Light can do wonders. When you come to know in your late pregnancy that your baby’s head is not facing downward, you may not know what to do next. But by simply putting a flashlight on the lower pelvic area, you can see the magic happen.
It is known that by the end of the second trimester, the foetus can recognize light from outside. When you put light on your lower pelvic area, there are pretty good chances that the baby would follow the light and move his head towards the bottom. Though there is no conclusive study related to this, there is no harm in trying this simple technique.
2. A Magical Touch of Frost
This is another simple way to turn around your baby’s head in the downward direction. Placing the ice pack or a frozen pea pack would do. All you need to do is place a towel on your tummy, particularly where the head is and then gently keep the ice pack on it. It is likely that the baby would feel the cold and would try to move away from it and that is what you want. Isn’t it?
3. Go the Medical Way
This technique should be considered when nothing else seems to work. The procedure that is widely used for physically turning the baby is called ECV or External Cephalic Version (ECV).
First of all your doctor would help your uterus relax by giving you epidural. Once it is done, the gynaecologist would physically try to move or tilt the baby. This could be painful and is dangerous too. But using the right technique and expertise, it can be achieved without much effort. But one should never ignore the risks associated with the process that could lead to a caesarean section surgery.
4. Try Changing Your Side
Turning to sides can help your breech baby come in the right position. This is because by turning again and again to either side, you make your pelvis flexible and it further aids in giving way for the baby to make a turn. This is a natural process, and you would not even realize in your sleep when your baby tilted back to the heads down position. Sleep on your left side instead of your right side for increased blood circulation. Also bending your legs and knees should be done, and a pillow should be placed between your legs.
5. Experiment Moxibustion Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a great way to turn a breech baby. In this technique, a physician would pinch thin and narrow needles on both of your toes. Then incense called moxibustion comprises a herb called mugwort. This incense is burned, and its smoke is spread around the toes. It is the combination of heat, needle pressure, and smoke that, in turn, leads to turning of the baby in the downward direction.
6. The Soothing Magic of Water
There is no denying the fact that a pregnant woman feels relaxed and light when in water. If you are pro at swimming, you can flip forward and backwards in the water or even try the breaststroke. This can greatly help in flipping the baby to the head down position. Another thing that you could try is headstand under the water. This may sound weird, but it is a useful and an effective technique. However, one needs to be careful when hitting the water and should always take advice from their doctors prior to diving. And, also while going for the headstand under water, do take help from someone who could hold your both feet in position.
7. Make Some Noise for the Baby
You would be surprised to know that a baby starts to respond to noise from outside once you reach the third trimester. Therefore, this method can also prove to work positively. All you need to do is play some calming music and place the headphones on the lower pelvic area. The baby would hear this music and would naturally move down to where the sound may seem to be coming from.
8. The Power of Hypnotism
This is the craziest thing you might be hearing, but yes it is a technique that has led to positive results in the past. The science behind this includes the fact that our conscious mind takes a back seat while subconscious mind dominates our thoughts. A hypnotist would hypnotize the mother-to-be and ask her to relax and forget all her worries. Once the body is relaxed, she would be asked to create a mental image of her rightly positioned baby. This can help in actuating the process in real.
9. Try a Massage
Prenatal massages have been popular since time immemorial. Massage is like a one-stop solution to every problem a pregnant woman is likely to face. Massage can help relax and get the much-needed break from pregnancy stress and pain.
A massage can significantly help in flipping the baby to the desired position. You should know that when you are pregnant, the ligaments, the tendons, and even the muscles around the pelvic area turn stiff. But with the right kind of massage, your body and mind will relax, and thus make way for the baby to turn downwards.
10. Going the Webster Way
This technique is conducted by an expert chiropractor. This process is carried out with the aim of realigning your pelvic bones and relaxing your ligaments so as to make a natural passage for the baby to move his head in the downward direction. You won't get the desired result in a day and so you need to be patient. You would have to attend sessions at least 3 times a week when you are nearing your delivery date. Also, make sure that your chiropractor is a reputed one with a successful track record in the past.
11. Grab Some Pulsatilla Herb
This involves relying on homoeopathy for flipping over the baby. Pulsatilla is a herb that is derived from the windflower and is recommended for women by their physicians when they are pregnant with a breech baby. If the positioning of the placenta or the uterine aberration is the reason for your breech baby, this herb is not your thing. But if everything is normal except the resistance your baby is showing towards turning over, pulsatilla can prove to be a boon. It is the dosage of this herb that aids in expanding of your uterus, thus added space for your baby to flip over.
Exercises to Turn a Breech Baby
While the above-mentioned techniques would do the needful, exercises can also help turn your breech baby to normal heads down position. Also, exercising keeps you fit and your mood happy, so why not try some to give some space for your baby to move. There should be no problem in turning a baby before 37 weeks with these exercises. However, turning a breech baby at 37 weeks or after should be done only under medical assistance.
1. Slope Your Body
Also called the tilt method, this exercise can be easily done with the help of an iron board. Look for a stable surface like your sofa and rest the ironing board in the slope position with one end on the sofa and the other on the floor.
Lie down on the iron board with your head towards the floor and your feet towards the sofa. But keep someone by your side as balancing could be an issue. This tilt would put some pressure on the baby’s head, and he would probably tuck his chin, thus there is a possibility of him flipping over. Try this exercise for at least 3 times a day with each session lasting for about 10-15 minutes for effective results later.
2. Knee to Chest
This exercise is based on gravitational pull. It is a simple exercise that involves you getting down on your knees on a mat. Next, keep your forearms on the ground, tuck your chin on the rested forearm and elevate your butt in the air. Stay in this position for about 5-10 minutes. This exercise helps the lower portion of your uterus to expand, thus more space for the baby to turn the right way.
It is recommended to do knee-to-chest exercise at least 2 times a day. Also, prefer doing it on an empty stomach or it could add on to discomfort or nausea later. In case you feel your baby turning while doing this exercise, use one of your hands to exert gentle pressure on the baby’s rear part that lies just above the pubic bone.
3. The Cat-Cow Position
Also called the hands and knee position, a mom to be can rely on it in order to turn the baby around. This position can help turn the body flexible so that the flipping over of the baby can be achieved easily. Get a yoga mat or a simple mat for yourself. Now, get down on your knees and hands on the mat. Also, drop your belly low. This position is similar to a cow-posture. Next, elevate your back in a curved position and stay there. This is similar to a cat position. Repeat this 3-4 times a day, and you may notice a miracle when your breech baby is no more breech.
4. Forward-Leaning Inversion
This exercise is similar to knee-to-chest exercise but involves a bit of more effort. Follow the similar pattern as that of a knee to chest exercise. However, this time place your lower body on the couch or the bed and your upper body parts, i.e., the head and elbows on the ground.
Do remember to tuck your chin as this very step would help in pelvic muscle relaxation. Keep someone by your side while you practice this exercise. Stay in the position for about 30 seconds and repeat it 3-4 times a day.
5. Pat Attention to Your Posture
Exercising is one important thing, but what is more important is keeping your posture straight. A perfect posture would provide your baby with enough space to turn over. The right way to maintain good posture is to stand straight with your chin perpendicular to the ground. Let your shoulders rest naturally without attempting to move them in the backward direction. Remember to not stand in the tilted position as if your belly is protruded and pull in your butts so that your body’s centre of gravity stays on them.
Things to Keep in Mind
Flipping a breech baby can be a challenging task. And, if you try the above techniques and exercises, you may get to achieve what you desire for. However, there are some things to keep in mind so as to avoid any issues during the course of pregnancy or during the labour.
A breech baby position is a normal thing till you reach your 30th week of pregnancy and fine until you reach the 32nd week.
Always take advice from your gynaecologist before trying any technique or exercise as there may be health risks associated with your specific condition.
In case your baby is still breech by the end of 37th week of pregnancy, medical assistance is strictly recommended. It is important to note that ECV or External Cephalic Version for manually turning a breech baby would be conducted in such cases.
You need to be confident and positive and you should not mourn why this happened to you.
If you have any pain or discomfort during exercising, stop immediately.
Drink as much water as you can. Drinking fluids are one effective solution for al body problems, and there is no denying this fact.
ECV is not a recommended technique for pregnant women who are expecting twins or for pregnant women who have a heart shaped womb and not a pear-shaped one.
Trust yourself, your baby, and your body; sometimes all you need to do is wait and to get your baby turn into heads down position naturally. Panicking is not the solution here.
Turning a breech baby becomes important in order to avoid problems in babies such as hip dysplasia or even lack of oxygen that reaches the brain.
Talking can be helpful sometimes. It is the words that come from the heart that can prove to be helpful. Talk to your belly; let the baby hear what you want and what he needs to do in this situation.
Lastly, a C-section is the last option if no other technique works. It is always better to pre-plan for your C-section in order to avert any issues later.
Looking at the above information, you would know by now what a breech baby is and what you could do about it. Maintain your calm and meditate to steer clear of any stress. Also, knowing that this is a normal situation and only about 3% of babies do not turn in the heads down position by the end of 37 weeks becomes important here. Take it as an add-on tip; remember to trust yourself and your instincts rather than believing in everyone what others have to say.

Foot Pain During Pregnancy
Body changes come as a part of pregnancy as your body is at work full-time to provide for a baby growing inside you. This means that you get to put up with a whole lot of symptoms ranging from that infamous morning sickness to a severe ache in your foot, paired with swelling, which may easily prevent you from comfortably engaging in daily tasks.
A constant pain in the foot during pregnancy can make it difficult for you to stand, walk or even put a little bit of pressure on them for too long. While there isn’t much you can do to prevent it from happening altogether, there are various methods to alleviate that pain and get some much-needed relief. However, a habit of regular exercise can be the ideal way to fight foot pain that is common during pregnancy.
Causes of Foot Pain in Pregnancy
Some of the common causes of foot pain during pregnancy can be attributed to the following.
Natural weight gain can put pressure on your feet and your ligaments near the arch of your feet making your feet hurt.
The centre of gravity in your body shifts as a result of the weight of the growing baby. This will require you to change the position and the posture that you stand-in, causing undue stress on your feet.
You may get a wider gait due to the extra weight. This can strain the muscles on your feet.
Increased blood volume during pregnancy can also cause cramps in the feet.
Tight shoes or shoes of incorrect size can cause stress to your feet and may also cause ingrown nails that contribute to foot pain
Most Common Foot Related Problems When Pregnant
Oedema
Oedema is a condition where there is noticeable swelling in the foot of pregnant women and is usually the common cause of foot pain during pregnancy in the second trimester.
As baby grows and the uterus expands to accommodate this growth, there is increased pressure on the blood vessels in the pelvic area. This results in a decrease in the rate of blood flow and the accumulation of blood in the feet, making your feet swell.
It is also possible for your feet to swell due to excess water retention in the body, which may appear like purple marks. As oedema can make it difficult for you to move about, it is best to consult a doctor if the discomfort is too much to bear.
Over-Pronation
Over-pronation is also known as flat feet and is caused by the excessive pressure on the foot. The arch of the foot can flatten out due to weight gain during pregnancy and add pressure on the plantar fascia, which are the tissues that connect the heel to the front of the foot.
Over-pronation can lead to added stress on your back as well as the calf muscles.
Remedies to Relieve Pregnancy Foot Pain
Although, pain in the feet is one of the symptoms of pregnancy, there are many remedies for foot pain during pregnancy that can help you walk and stand easy.
Take the help of orthotics. You can have these inserted in your footwear to provide support to your foot arch and prevent it from flattening out.
Always ensure to wear the right shoes that offer supper and are comfortable. Do not wear shoes that are too tight and cramp up your toes. As these can also cause ingrown nails contributing to your pain.
Try and put your feet up whenever you sit down to facilitate blood flow. This can prevent oedema.
Rotate your ankles, one at a time to improve blood circulation. This can also help in the case of foot cramps.
Keep yourself hydrated. Drink plenty of water as dehydration can worsen swelling and increase water retention.
Consume a balanced diet and avoid excess salt as it can contribute to water retention.
Apply olive oil and massage your foot or book a foot massage to relieve the pain. You can also try hot oil massage for effective pain relief.
Use cotton socks and ensure to avoid socks with seams to facilitate circulation.
Try compression stockings. These are known to mimic the act of squeezing facilitating blood flow from the feet. Edema lowers the efficiency of your body in pumping blood up from your feet, these stockings help facilitate contraction of the muscles near the veins in the leg, forcing the blood to move up.
Use a bag of ice to relieve the pain if you are experiencing excess pain.
Mix a cup of salt or Epsom salt with water in a wide mouthed vessel and place your feet in it for 15 to 20 minutes.
Your foot is going to receive a lot of strain due to all that weight you will be carrying in the later part of your pregnancy. Although foot pain in early pregnancy is not very common, it is advised to take precautions to lower the chances of excessive discomfort. A regimen of daily exercise and a proper diet should help you stay clear of intense pain in the foot.
It can also be of great help to keep in mind RICE – Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate as a trick to cope with foot pain during pregnancy. In any event where you find that the pain is too much to go about your daily activities, then you will need to consult your doctor immediately for medical help. You can also discuss with your doctor about the best ways to relieve foot pain at home well ahead of time.

BMI (Body Mass Index) During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is not an easy journey. As the pregnancy progresses, there is always a risk of certain complications but not all women will face problems. However, if you are obese or are on the heavier side, you might face certain complications during pregnancy or while giving birth to your baby. Understanding the normal BMI for pregnancy is absolutely necessary since the onset of obesity directly increases the chances of having an unhealthy heavy baby, or leading to choose a caesarean delivery over a normal one.
What Is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
The concept of BMI has existed in the space of healthcare and medical sciences for many years. Recently, it has found recognition in the mainstream and is being hailed as a great standard to understand your position in health. BMI is a simple mathematical formula that makes use of various parameters to get to a medical understanding of your weight, demarcated either as underweight, normal, or overweight. As the name 'body mass index' suggests, the BMI score is used to figure out if you have the right proportion of body fat based on your height and weight. A simple formula to calculate the score is to divide your weight in kgs by the square of your height in cms.
Is BMI an Accurate Indicator of Good Health
Even though BMI is used pretty widely nowadays, it doesn't exactly indicate your health condition. As per a recent study, the BMI score of certain people was compared with the actual values of various other health markers such as blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar levels etc. and it was observed that many people who were healthy on those lines were termed as overweight as per the BMI score. On the other hand, others with good BMI scores were detected to have various health issues in other areas.
The body shapes of people across the world differ in the physical structure and in muscle composition, making it difficult to differentiate simple fat from muscle using a mathematical formula. The technologies of today have made it possible to get over that gap and reach a conclusion of higher accuracy. Taking into account the waist to height ratio instead gives a better idea of the health of the person since a lot of excess fat tends to get deposited in the region of the waist, around the important organs such as kidneys, liver, and heart.

The suggestions of your doctor might vary based on the scale used for calculating your BMI score.
How to Calculate BMI While Pregnant
Calculating your BMI when you are pregnant isn’t difficult. You need to get an approximation of the weight of your pregnancy from your doctor. Once you have that, you can deduct it from your total weight to get your true weight. This should be used to calculate your BMI. Based on this, there is a weight gain that is presumed to be healthy over the trimesters. The initial phase should show a weight gain of around half kilograms every month. As you enter the second trimester, it will be twice as before, which further increases to four times as that of the first when you are in the third trimester.
Does BMI Change from Normal to Obese during Pregnancy?
BMI is a score that is calculated on the basis of your body weight as well as your height. During pregnancy, your weight increases, while your height stays the same. This results in your BMI score shifting to the higher side gradually, which could put you into the zone of overweight or obese as you proceed ahead in pregnancy. That isn’t a cause of worry as such, as long as your weight gain has been within the healthy limits as specified at the beginning of the pregnancy.
Obese BMI and Pregnancy Complications
With a high BMI during the third trimester of your pregnancy or at any stage for that matter, the chances of complications increase quite a lot, especially if the score is higher than 30. These can vary across a lot of possibilities such as:
Increased chances of delivering a stillborn.
A propensity to go for caesarean delivery instead of a normal vaginal one.
Infections.
Urinary tract infections or kidney issues.
Formation of blood clot anomalies.
A possibility of extreme bleeding following the delivery.
Increased risk of complications due to anaesthetics.
Foetus having various birth-related defects.
Obesity making it difficult to view the baby via ultrasound.
A higher chance of contracting pregnancy-induced diabetes.
Tips to Manage Your Weight during Pregnancy If Your BMI Is High
Pregnancy and excess weight is not a healthy combination. However, the presence of a high BMI score should not make you deter from proceeding ahead with your pregnancy. There are a bunch of tips you can adhere to, which will help you manage your weight better.
Opt for cereals or grains since those are extremely healthy and barely affect your weight gain at all.
Combining various vegetables and fruits, along with different legumes can provide you with the necessary energy throughout pregnancy.
Keep a track of your meat consumption, do not overdo it.
Exercise daily, starting with around 20 minutes daily, and ramping it up slowly.
Go for simple exercises such as walking or swimming, and try your hand at yoga to calm yourself and stay stress-free.
Precautions/Guidelines for Women with High BMI during Pregnancy
In case you have a high BMI during pregnancy, guidelines and precautions for you are extremely essential to make sure your pregnancy does not hit any roadblocks and proceeds ahead with minimal complications.
As a preventive measure, take suggestions from your weight loss expert before you try to conceive.
Calculate BMI as early as possible once you find out that you are pregnant.
Stay within the healthy parameters of weight gain for your BMI score.
Talk to your doctor or nutritionist to chalk out a proper diet that can help you balance the necessary nutrients as well as keep your weight under control.
Consult an instructor to create an exercise programme that is suitable for pregnancy.
Follow up with your cardiologist to check for any possible heart-related issues as well as your general doctor to check for the chances of having pregnancy-induced diabetes.
Motherhood is an experience you should not miss. If your weight does not fall within the realm of normalcy, you shouldn't make it a reason for not getting pregnant. Yes, there are chances of higher risks and complications during delivery, but those can be handled by taking the right decisions well in advance.

What to Do When You Are Tired of Saying No To Your Baby
Your baby is now over 12 months and you are certainly experiencing some changes. These changes may be so new and unexpected that they may test your patience. This age brings with it independence in different areas like walking, grabbing onto things and exploring the world around your little one. This sense of independence will drive him to explore the whole household or anywhere else you may take him. Some instances will be a bit difficult to handle, like your baby pulling down the table cloth and curtains. Your 1 year old might even empty powder bottles and pull down all the books from the shelf. The thought of it is making you cringe, isn't it? When no amount of “Nos” work and you're nearly pulling your hair out, what do you do?
One thing that you as a parent should understand is that your baby at 1.5-2 years will want to explore things more than his capability. Your parenting, then, should involve patience and innovative ways that will stop your child from doing something that is not right or safe without screaming at him. Your little one is innocent and naive and doesn’t understand the boundaries of what is safe or not, appropriate or not; teaching him is your job.
There are more ways to say “No” than actually saying “No”. Here are some ways you could try.
1. Distraction
Children often have a short attention span, making it easy to distract them. Distraction will help move your child away from anything you do not want him to do. The moment you observe that your little one is up to something mischievous, get him out of there by luring into some favorite toy. The curiosity of your child can be sometimes dangerous and distraction will surely help. Firm “Nos” tend to make children rebel or do wrong things on the sly.
2. Falling to Learn
Let your baby learn from mistakes. Needless to say that you need to keep a close watch on the safety of your baby but a few falls to let him learn aren't so bad. Let your child stumble upon a thing and fall. Once a baby knows that certain things may lead to pain, he will steer clear of them on his own. Be there to comfort him when he falls, of course!
3. Safe Arena
Rather saying a harsh “no” to everything unsafe, why not make your house a bit safer for your child? This is a much cleaner approach. Your baby will not be exposed to any kinds of unsafe activities. Hiding all sharp objects and covering open switch boards are some examples.
4. Non-verbal Language
Why not teach your baby to understand “No” through signs? This can be a change in the tone of your voice or a certain stare at your baby. Your little one will understand that you are not happy and should stop immediately. This approach will help you big time at social gatherings or anywhere outdoors where you'd rather not yell at your child.
You as a parent should remember is that it is rather a high expectation from your baby to say that he is sorry at this age. Understanding the world from a child’s point of view is crucial at all times. A “No” to everything will deprive your child from learning a lot of things. Clearly define the situations where a “no” will help and where it will not. The best thing to do will be to lead by example. Be gentle and kind at all times even when you're being firm about what is wrong. Your baby trusts and loves you and as long as he feels safe, disciplining him will not be as stressful as it could be.
