Solitary (Independent) Play - Benefits and Why It Is Good for Kids
Adults do a lot of hard work for earning a living. But a kid’s life is all different. They just need toys by their side and a company to play along. But company is not always available. You as parents may be busy earning big and may not have time for your kids. This is why encouraging solitary play in early childhood becomes a must. When your little one starts to enjoy his own company, you would be preparing him to fight his battles alone, later in life.
What is Independent Play?
Solitary play definition implies, playing on your own. As a matter of fact, babies can start playing as soon as they start focusing on objects with their eyesight. When a baby is given an object that amazes him, he usually spend a lot of time contemplating and wondering what it is.
Solitary play is a beginning of one’s independent living and a step towards developing social interactions. When a baby learns to enjoy his own company, he need not depend on anyone and would also learn creativity by doing his own thing. However, to be able to leave your kid alone; a lot of patience and tricks should be kept in mind.
Independent Play Age in Children
Solitary play age in children starts as soon as they begin to see things clearly. But some experts have a different say. They believe that a baby can be indulged into solitary playing once he reaches the 6-8 months mark. This is because; by this time a baby can hold objects while sitting on his own.
What are the Different Types of Solitary Play?
There are different ways to encourage in your little one. Though the noteworthy ones include:
1. Open-Ended Toys
Kids love to explore things. Owing to their naïve nature, kids want to explore everything that gets into their hands. And, if you are choosing an open-ended toy, the kid would indulge with it for a longer duration without distraction. If there were an option of playing with the same object in different ways, kids would love it.
2. Set Up a Stage of Things
When you combine different toys together in a fun way, a kid would instantly get involved. It is similar to making a story setting with different objects decorated to make things interesting and fun.
3. Imaginative Play
Prefer indulging the kids in playing games where they have to activate their brain cells to work out things. Something, like building blocks or putting a key to the toy so that it dances, would be an interesting task.
Benefits of Solitary Play for Children
The ubiquitous benefits of encouraging independent play in toddlers include:
1. Having Fun on their Own
When you let your kids play by themselves with no support at all, you give them a chance to have fun in their own imaginative ways. This, in turn, helps them later in life by not depending on anyone for their fun and happiness.
2. Emerges the Imagination In them
You will not realize how imaginative your baby is until you leave them alone. Eventually, you’ll be surprised to know how they interpret things and play with them uninterruptedly.
3. Makes them Socially Independent
Life is all about being your own hero. And, the sooner your kid realizes it, the better. Independent play aids in teaching your little ones how to enjoy their own company. In turn, they will not depend on anyone for anything no matter what the situation.
4. Prepares them for School
When you leave your kid to play on their own, you indirectly prepare them for school. You can’t be always by your kid’s side, and this is a fact. Children usually cry and can’t let go off you when they start going to school. And, when you teach them how to be happy in their own company, they’ll happily step into the new learning phase without you holding onto them.
5. Makes them a Problem Solver
Kids rely on us for everything. In their mind, they know the fact that you are there for them always. Leaving your kids alone to play by themselves would teach them the importance of staying alone and loving their own company. Moreover, they’ll become the problem solvers and would find their ways out of any situation in later stages in life.
6. You Get the Much Needed Break
Everyone is aware of the fact that handling kids is a challenging task. From changing diapers to helping then take their first step; parents do everything that is needed. By encouraging toddler independent play ideas, you help yourself too. You can enjoy some time for yourself while your little one busy playing.
How to Encourage Independent Play In Children?
There are numerous ways that you can follow to encourage solitary play in children. What are those ways? Have a look for yourself.
1. Provide them the Right Toys
Kids love anything that is unique and amazes them. Give them innovative toys like building blocks or clay they could experiment with. You could also buy your kids Cubelets with Lego pieces or puzzles that they could solve.
2. Give Your Kids Space
Giving your kid his own space to analyse and do things would be beneficial. A kid should be given his space to and the freedom to make his own choices. The moment you force anything on them, they tend to become more dependent.
3. Understand Your Child’s Needs
Some children may instantly find their comfort in playing alone while some may take their own sweet time in finding their happiness alone. You need to understand your child’s psychology and his individual needs rather than pushing them into something they don’t like.
4. Give them an Open Play Space
Giving your kids the right space to play would be the right thing to do. Giving them an ample and a safe space. You could even refer to play space designs for the same.
5. Do Not Interfere
Letting your kids play without interrupting them would be encouraging to a great extent. Even an appreciation or a suggestion should not be encouraged as this could break their flow and interest at the same time.
6. Let It All Go Natural
Do not force your kids into self-playing. Whether he is 6 months or 3 years old indulging in independent play, letting it come about naturally would be the best option. Consider not telling them what to do and what not to. Use easy going words that sound kind and encouraging. By simply giving them the control over their play time you would be doing the needful.
Looking at everything related to solitary play, you must be pretty sure when, why, and how to encourage your little ones into it. However, remember to never leave them alone for a long time and always keep their playing environment safe. You could also install CCTV cameras around to keep track of their playing times so that you can also know what the kid is up to.

Fortunately, swimming is a highly recommended exercise for pregnant women, as it helps to maintain their health in a profoundly relaxing manner. However, if there are certain complications or the possibility of a high-risk pregnancy, then certain precautionary measures are necessary. If you have been doing prenatal swimming, there is no reason why you shouldn’t continue during this period, unless medically advised not to. What to Wear While Swimming?
As your stomach expands your favourite swimsuit will no longer be able to hold you. A two-piece suit gives a lot of space for the growing baby, so try one. You can opt for a maternity swimsuit f you are not comfortable flaunting your bloated tummy. Check with your regular swimwear brand for one, as maternity swimwear is quite fashionable.
Suggested Swimming Workouts in Pregnancy
There are many pregnancy swimming exercises you could try out in the pool. In fact, you should be prepared with a basic workout before you step into the water. Speak to your instructor and brief him/her about your condition and he could design a suitable regime.
If you have occasionally swum earlier, begin slowly and gradually and increase the duration and number of laps. The key is to remain comfortable during the session and work up a moderate speed that does not make you breathless. Double breast-stroke and frog kicks are ideal for beginners.
If you have been a regular swimmer before pregnancy and your doctor has green-signalled it, you can continue your daily workout. Carry out 5 to 6 sets of 4 laps each using a single style or alternating between different ones to give a complete work out to your body.

During the first trimester, you should ideally swim for 30 minutes every day, provide your doctor approves and you have the strength. Start your day with a swim and your morning nausea will vanish, while improving your overall strength.
Swimming During Pregnancy: Second Trimester
As the baby size grows and the body becomes heavier, most mothers-to-be abandon their swimming or reduce the frequency. If your back is acting up, do the backstroke since it will help you to lie on your back and won’t affect the blood flow too. Buy a larger and a more accommodating swimsuit if the present one is cramping your swimming style.

If you want to reduce the stress on your back muscles, the breaststroke is the best style to use. It also works on the chest muscles and helps elongate it. Using a snorkel is also a good idea as it helps to relieve neck pressure. Be careful while walking on wet surfaces and use anti-slip footwear.
Warning Signs to Check for While Swimming During Pregnancy
If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek help and leave the pool immediately:
Vaginal Bleeding
Pain in the Abdomen or lower

To add to it, she has not shied away from bringing attention to it by adding highlights; they give incredible depth to her already gorgeous hair! Home First Aid Box - What Should Be in Your Home First Aid Kit
Every home should have a properly stocked first aid kit in order to handle any emergency. It should be kept handy in the personal vehicle too. A handy first aid kit can reduce the risk of any infection and tone down the severity of any injury. The supplies in a first aid kit can treat burns, sprains, scrapes and cuts, stings, splinters or strains. The ultimate idea of keeping a first aid kit is ensuring the safety of the family at home and even on the road. The first aid kit can be comprehensive or basic. If professional medical help is a long distance away, you need to be medically trained to provide emergency assistance.
How to Make and Maintain a First Aid Box at Home?
One should always keep in mind that emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, so keeping a first aid kit ready at home is a good emergency preparation. Making a first aid kit at home can have an added advantage wherein you can personalise it to suit your personal needs. Apart from this, it is not very difficult to make a smart and equipped first aid box for your home.
Given below are the ways how to make a first aid kit at home:
1. Choose a Nice Container
One should look for a suitable container which is large, water-resistant, translucent, flexible or rigid with a zipper closure or latch top lid. The box should have enough space to contain things, be accessible and portable as well. The items should be easily separated by type, for which there should be inbuilt partitions. The box should be easily identified, so 'FIRST AID' should be marked with a permanent marker.
2. Keep the Kit Safely Accessible
The first aid kit should be kept at a consistent spot which is clearly defined, and each and every member should be aware of it. You must remember to keep it beyond the reach of small children, but they should know where it is kept.
3. Teach Family Members the Use of the First Aid Kit
Every adult member in the house should know when the first aid kit should be retrieved. They should also be well aware of the use of the equipment in the first aid kit. Younger children should just be aware of the location, but should not be able to access it. Older members should be well-versed with the use of it as well.
4. Keep the Kit Updated Always
You should always keep track of the supply of medicines and their expiry dates. Just the way you need to check the battery of your inverter, the status of the first aid kit also requires to be checked.
5. Include a Checklist in the Kit
It is a very good idea to stock the first aid kit well and note every item on a sheet of paper. Whosoever retrieves the kit can immediately know what it includes and also which items are ready to use.
Homemade First Aid Kit Essentials
All emergency essentials are contained in a homemade first aid kit. It is intentionally extensive so that you don’t forget anything and all the emergency requirements are readily available. Here is a home first aid kit checklist so that nothing remains forgotten:
1. An Array of Bandages
If there are minor cuts and scrapes, a variety of types and sizes of bandages can be required. The first aid kit will come in handy when you have multiple options to choose from. Keep all the bandages in a clear zip-lock bag, neatly labelled. The different types of bandages are as mentioned below:
Various sizes of adhesive bandages
Gauze pads
Cloth adhesive tape – 1 roll
Triangular bandages
Wide roller bandage
Sterile dressing
2. Basic Medical Tools
Now that you have your bandages, you will require other articles that will either help with cutting the bandages, or be used for other things. Remember that a household medical kit should be transparent so that the content in it is clearly visible. Here are the other medical tools you'll need:
Zip close plastic bags for disposal of medical waste
Wipes for cleansing
Hand sanitizers for cleaning hands on the spot
Instruction booklet for first aid
Cold compress for instant use
CPR breathing barrier mask
Cotton swabs and balls
Oral thermometer – non-mercury
Non-latex gloves for infection protection
Tweezers
Sharp, small scissors
Plucking splinters
3. Non-essential Useful Medical Tools
Try to always keep the kit simple and small. Multi-use items are often required. Some items that are non-essential but can serve as useful medical tools are:
Baster (for flushing out wounds)
Safety pins
Needle for sewing
Petroleum jelly
Duct tape
Aluminium finger splint
Warming blanket (pre-packaged space)
Eye protection
4. Create a Separate Section for Medications As Well
Your first aid kit should be made comprehensive with important medicines that might come in handy. It's best to find travel-size packs of the medicines you need, as it is easy to carry around. Make sure to check the expiration dates of all your medicines, and update your kit with new medicines regularly. Here's a list of medicines you need for your first aid kit for home:
Medicine for cough and cold
Hydrocortisone cream for itchy bites and to reduce inflammation
Pain relievers (aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen) for mild pain
Antihistamine cream for bad conditions of rashes
Antacids
Laxatives
Anti- diarrhoea medication
Calamine lotion
Aloe vera gel for burn relief
Aesthetic spray for itching rashes or insect bites
Antibiotic cream to apply on wounds
5. Family Medicines Should Be Kept to Personalise the Kit
The prescription medicines should be included for members of the family.
Maintain a close watch on the expiry dates of prescription medicines.
If there is a history of some severe allergy, keep some of the medicine in the home kit so that even a visitor can provide assistance during an emergency.
If the medicine supply gets depleted, keeping a small stock of personalised medical supplies can be useful. All the members of the house should be trained on how to administer the medicines. You must also keep the phone number of the regional poison control centre. A first aid kit for everyday use should be available in your car as well.
The three primary goals of a first aid kit are the 3 Ps - preserve life, prevent any further injury, and promote the recovery of a person. The person using the first aid kit should also know about the 3 Bs - breathing, bleeding and bones is the order to follow. The first thing that needs to be done is to check the breathing of the patient.
The person using the first aid kit should be able to give first aid treatment during an injury or illness. One first aid kit should be made available in the vehicle and also at the workplace. Home first aid kits are usually made to treat minor traumatic injuries. Care should be taken to discard the items safely after the expiry date.

It Takes a Real Mother to Say, ''I Don't Know Everything!"
'It'll come to you naturally' - this is the phrase that I always got to hear whenever I asked anybody about being a mother or taking care of a child. And finally the day arrived when I finally got to begin this beautiful journey of motherhood; I was so ecstatic to be a mother, the flawless mother that I always have thought I would be. But then to my surprise I found myself in a state of dilemma, struggling to handle the cranky baby, and struggling really very very hard to breastfed the baby. I was so devastated and shattered. I started to blame myself for all the problems that I was facing. I started thinking that I don't have the right to be a mother if I didn't know how to breastfeed a baby, if I didn't know how to calm a cranky baby, if I didn't know whether the baby is hungry or full, because in everyone's opinion these things are supposed to come to you naturally when you become a mother. I felt as if there was a war going on inside me and I couldn't share my feelings with anyone.
Then something happened one day. After putting the baby to sleep, I was just going through my Facebook news feed and I saw an ad featuring Sonali Bendre. It said - It takes a real mother to admit that "No, I don't know everything". After watching that short clip I found myself at ease. It felt so good and I felt like God Himself had come to rescue me from my own thoughts. At that point I knew that no, it doesn't come to you naturally and it's okay if you are struggling to breastfeed your baby. You will grow as a mother along with the baby. Stop blaming yourself; just love your baby and love yourself. Things will fall into place.
