Conception After an Abortion - Is It Possible?
Conception can bring lots of happiness to you and your family. However, involuntary abortion or miscarriage may take away your bundle of joy. However, the good news is that you can always plan for a baby again.
Is It Easy to Get Pregnant After an Abortion?
Abortion doesn't affect the fertility of a woman and the ovulation process resumes after an abortion. This means that getting pregnant after an abortion is very much possible. However, when an abortion is done in an improper way, it may lead to complications like trauma to the bladder and intestines and long-term damage to the reproductive system in rare cases. More than these, it is an infection which can clog the tubes later These complications mainly arise if the surgeon is unskilled or lacks the necessary tools to carry out the procedure.
How Soon Can I Conceive After an Abortion?
Are you thinking, “When can I conceive after an abortion?” We’ll tell you. As soon as ovulation resumes after the abortion, you can conceive again. If you haven't used birth control measures, in rare cases, you can get pregnant within 7-10 days if you are ovulating. But, this is not recommended as the body needs to heal itself.
Doctors recommend waiting for a minimum of 3 months before trying for a baby again. This is to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mother and the baby.
If you had a surgical abortion or a D&C (Dilation and Curettage) procedure, your gynaecologist will advise you to wait for at least a month to allow the uterus to heal. If your abortion was in the second or third trimester, the doctor may recommend waiting longer, so that you're well-rested. You may also be prescribed folic acid supplements to reduce the chances of neural tube defects in the next pregnancy. If there were no medical complications, then pregnancy after an abortion is safe.
Can an Abortion Cause Infertility?
Having a miscarriage takes a toll on your physical and emotional well-being. If the abortion was legally performed by a skilled surgeon, you should not have any issue conceiving whenever you are ready for pregnancy. However, the chances of conceiving a second-time decrease if the termination was done illegally or by untrained doctors, midwives or in unclean conditions. There could be complications like infections, scarring or incomplete abortion, resulting in major health risks to the woman.
Infertility problems are caused in case of:
An incomplete termination where the pregnancy has ended, but remnants of the fetus have not been removed completely. Thus, increasing the risk of infections, scarring and complications.
In some cases, if the D&C procedure is not done correctly and with care, chances of damage to the uterus while cleaning are high.
Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection that can set in post-abortion. If not treated on time, it can cause blockage around or inside the fallopian tubes and enhance the risk of ectopic pregnancy.
There could be scarring inside the uterus or on the apex of your cervix (opening of the uterus). If you miss your periods or have light periods post-procedure, it could be due to scarring. Your doctor may test for scarring through hysteroscopy, a procedure whereby a tiny camera is passed through the cervix to the uterus to verify for any such signs. The doctor may repair the scarred tissue simultaneously. Abnormal scarring of the uterus may be caused by scraping of the uterus with curette during the D & C procedure. In case of extensive scarring, it may lead to infertility; it is termed as ‘Asherman’s syndrome’. In theory, Manual Vacuum Aspiration will eliminate this risk, as there is no involvement of scraping. Similarly, Suction Abortion / Suction Curettage will reduce the risk of scarring.
If you have had a history of multiple abortions, you may have a cervical weakness, which could be because of dilation of cervix done during the procedure. This may be treated by a few stitches to keep the cervix closed.
Does Abortion Affect Fertility?
Abortion doesn't generally interfere with a future pregnancy. If you plan to get pregnant and your uterus is ready to conceive, there’s nothing to be worried about.
Due to advancement in medical sciences, abortion is now a safe procedure. When performed under proper medical regulations and by an expert, it does not affect future fertility. If abortion has been illegally or incorrectly performed by an inexperienced doctor, there are chances of infection or damage to the reproductive organs like the fallopian tubes, ovaries or uterus lining.
Abortion involves dilation of the cervix; if done repeatedly, it can weaken the cervix and lead to premature dilation. Besides, multiple D&C procedures could lead to scarring inside the uterus or at the top of the cervix.
What If I’ve Had More Than One Abortion?
Women who have had more than one abortion are at an increased risk of infection after the procedure. In some cases, the fallopian tubes get blocked, making natural conception impossible.
Tips to Get Pregnant After an Abortion
Here are some tips for safe pregnancy after an abortion:
Speak to your gynaecologist before planning for a baby.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle and quit smoking, and drinking. Lower your caffeine intake.
Having an active sex life with your partner increases the chances of pregnancy.
Have sex frequently when you're ovulating. You can buy an ovulation kit or download an ovulation tracker app on your smartphone.
Post-intercourse, elevate your feet and hips by placing a pillow under your buttocks.
Things To Remember While Planning for a Baby
If you're trying to conceive again, you should take a few precautions.
Have a detailed discussion with your gynaecologist or fertility expert. You may also have to get your reproductive system checked.
Think about whether you're physically and mentally ready to handle pregnancy again. If you're not ready for pregnancy, use birth control methods like condoms or contraceptives.
If you've had multiple abortions, you can get a stitch to keep the growing baby safe. You can also strengthen your pelvic floor muscles by doing Kegel exercises.
If you had an abortion recently, allow your body to heal and prepare for the next pregnancy. Conceiving too soon after an abortion causes stress and anxiety, consequently affecting the development of the fetus.
If you're unable to conceive after an abortion, consult a fertility expert for IVF or IUI.
An abortion doesn’t close the doors to motherhood. As long as it's performed at an authorised clinic, you shouldn't have a problem conceiving again.

Gray Baby Syndrome - Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and More
Having a healthy baby is something that every mother desires. This is why it is important to take care of yourself throughout your pregnancy with the right diet, exercise, and medical care. You should remember not to take any new medicines without consulting your doctor as certain medications can cause serious birth defects or other health complications for your child. Gray Baby Syndrome is one such condition.
What is Grey Baby Syndrome?
This is a potentially fatal health complication that can occur in newborn or premature babies as a result of an overdose of the antibiotic chloramphenicol administered either to the infant or the mother. Since babies cannot break down high dosages of this drug, it can accumulate in the bloodstream leading to cardiovascular collapse. The fatality rate stands at 40% of all cases.
Other Names of Gray Baby Syndrome
Gray Baby Syndrome is also known as
Chloramphenicol Toxicity in Newborns ,
Chloramphenicol Toxicity in Neonates, and
Gray Syndrome from Chloramphenicol Administration in Newborn.
Who Can Get This Syndrome (Sex and Age Wise Distribution)?
This syndrome usually appears soon after the birth of the baby and has been found to occur equally in both genders. Children up to the age of two years are more vulnerable to this condition though less than newborns. Studies have not indicated any kind of racial or ethnic predilections.
About Chloramphenicol
Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as meningitis when other medications have failed to work. Owing to the influx of newer medicines and due to the risk of Gray Baby Syndrome, use of chloramphenicol use has come downreduced over the years. The drug, found in eye drops and ointments used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis is also known to cause bone marrow toxicity. It is usually administered intravenously to patients.
Causes of Gray Baby Syndrome
Use of chloramphenicol is the primary cause of Gray Baby Syndrome. Newborns cannot process or excrete high amounts of chloramphenicol and as a result it can build up to toxic levels in the blood stream which can prove fatal. Chloramphenicol might also be given to pregnant women for treatment of certain bacterial infections and this can then get passed on to the foetus. Nursing mothers who have been administered chloramphenicol can pass this on to their children through breast milk.
Risk Factors for Gray Baby Syndrome
When a newborn is given chloramphenicol within the first three days of birth without monitoring of the drug levels in the blood, it puts them at a risk of this condition. Premature infants and under- nourished or underweight babies are at a greater risk of developing Gray Baby Syndrome. Babies of pregnant or lactating women who have been administered this drug are also at risk.
How the Diagnosis is Done?
A thorough physical examination as well as the analysis of the medical treatments provided to the infant and its her mother is essential for arriving at a diagnosis. The levels of chloramphenicol in the blood will have to be measured at regular intervals and additional tests performed before your doctor can arrive at a definitive diagnosis.
Symptoms of Gray Baby Syndrome
The symptoms of this condition are likely to surface anywhere between two to nine days after treatment begins. These can include
Vomiting
Low blood pressure
Low body temperature
Bluish tinge to the lips and skin
Abdominal swelling
Green coloured stools
Irregular heartbeat
Difficulty breathing and refusal to breastfeed
What are Possible Complications?
If there is delay in starting treatment or diagnosing the illness, different type of complications can result. They are:
Problems with blood circulation that can bring about cardiovascular collapse. This can result in death also.
Bone marrow depression where the body stops production of new platelets and other blood cells leading to bleeding and infections.
Secondary disorders or infections can worsen the situation especially in babies which are under nourished or born pre-term.
Treatments for Gray Baby Syndrome
Early treatment is the best way to win against this disease and the first step would be to discontinue the medication if it is being given to the baby. If you are being medicated with chloramphenicol, then the first thing to do is to stop breastfeeding. The baby will have to be hospitalised for treatment which can include the following procedures:
Exchange Transfusion: Here, part of your baby’s blood will be removed and replaced with freshly donated blood or plasma using a catheter.
Haemodialysis: With this the toxins are removed from your baby’s bloodstream and a balance is achieved in potassium and sodium levels to stabilise the baby’s blood pressure.
Besides these, oxygen therapy or hemoperfusion may also be done to help your baby recover.
How to Prevent This Condition?
Avoiding chloramphenicol as a medication for infants and not using it when pregnant or lactating is the best way of preventing this condition. Ask your doctor for alternate medication if chloramphenicol is prescribed when you are at risk.
Prognosis of Gray Syndrome
There is a good prognosis for gray baby syndrome. Chloramphenicol is the culprit and discontinuing this medication immediately on early diagnosis can result in a complete recovery. But the slightest of delays in detecting the presence of this drug can prove fatal. The prognosis might change depending on the overall health and well-being of the child. Preterm babies and malnourished children may not do as well as healthy and full term infants.
Conclusion
Though chloramphenicol can be dangerous, taking it under the guidance of a doctor and only in the prescribed dosage usually does not lead to Gray Baby Syndrome. In such instances, blood levels will be constantly monitored to ensure the drug is not present in excess in the bloodstream. The use of chloramphenicol has declined significantly with the emergence of other safer alternatives.

Hand Washing for Kids - Importance and Right Procedure
Kids are not born with a developed immune system. Their immune system is weak and is still developing, and hence, they are susceptible to numerous diseases and infections. And to combat this, hygiene is extremely important. One of the cornerstones of teaching your child to have a good sense of hygiene is to teach him why washing his hands is needed.
Importance of Handwashing
The importance of handwashing for children cannot be emphasized enough; a child’s hands are the most exposed part of his body and interact with more germs on an hourly basis than we breathe on a daily basis. These microscopic germs are the cause of some of the most dangerous diseases and illnesses that can occur in children. Therefore, it is important to establish lines of defence against these germs, and the first step towards that is teaching kids the importance of washing their hands, as well as the proper technique to do so, in order to clean their hands.
How Do Germs Spread?
Before learning about the proper technique for washing your children’s hands, it is important to understand the ways germs can spread. Here are the most common ways in which the dangerous germs spread to your child through touch.
Touching dirty surfaces is the most common way germs can spread to your child. And it's not just floors! Common surfaces such as computers, bathroom facilities, (even door handles!), and so on, which are shared by many individuals, can become breeding grounds for germs.
Playing in the dirt is another favourite activity of children that causes germs to spread. This is especially bad due to the amount of unhygienic components that the dirt kids play with is exposed to.
If your baby is still wearing diapers, he can run his hands on and inside his diapers, which are dirty and can be a source of germs entering his body.
Germs commonly spread when your child touches someone who is sick or is about to be sick.
Bad bacteria is all around your child, even in food. If your child touches bad food or water, this bacteria can contaminate him as well.
Exposure to germs and bacteria can happen through sweat. Your child can contract diseases by touching your sweat, or even his own sweat, that has been contaminated by airborne germs.
Which Infections Can Be Prevented by Washing Hands?
There are numerous types of infections that can be prevented by the simple act of washing your child’s hands. Some of these include the common cold, influenza, hepatitis A, meningitis, and bronchiolitis. It is important to remember that washing your child’s hands with soap kills numerous infectious bacteria and germs that could, if left unattended to, become dangerous.
When Should Kids Wash Their Hands?
Children need to wash their hands various times a day - this is especially required during, before and after certain activities. These activities include:
Before a meal.
After a meal.
After playing in the dirt.
After waking up.
Before going to bed.
After playing a sport.
After blowing their nose.
After going to the toilet.
Children need to wash their hands whenever they are exposed to germs. For more situations where children must wash their hands, talk to your doctor to know when they are in contact with harmful germs in common situations.
What is the Right Procedure for Handwashing?
The first thing to consider when teaching your child how to wash hands properly is looking at the proper procedure. Here are the most important hand washing steps for kids to follow:
When teaching kids to wash their hands, the first step they must know is to rinse their hands using room temperature water.
The second step is to teach them how to lather the soap. The procedure for lathering soap is to scrub soap around the palms, fingertips, under the nails, between the fingers, and the back of the palm.
Wash the soap off with room-temperature water.
Finally, they need to dry their hands with a clean towel.
How to Get Children to Wash their Hands
Children will not always want to wash their hands. They may feel that it is a restriction or a rule, and children always like to challenge their limitations. However, it is important to learn how to get them to wash their hands when they need to. Here are a few tips to help.
Make it a game: Making washing their hands a game can help kids be excited about their hygiene.
Sing while washing: Make the process of washing hands fun! An interactive song will motivate them to sing along while washing their hands, making it a fun and entertaining aspect of their day.
Reward them: By rewarding them for washing their hands, kids can become excited to do so. To do this, first set a benchmark of how many times they need to wash their hands, and the situation they need to do it in. At the end of the day, if successful, they get the reward.
Talk to them: Kids are smarter than we give them credit for - sit them down and explain to them the purpose of good hygiene. They are sure to understand why washing their hands is so important.
Teach them through videos: A lot of educational videos for kids have the ability to teach them to wash their hands. Show them a cartoon or video online that teaches them the lesson in a fun way.
Don'ts While Teaching Children About Handwashing
There are some points to consider when teaching a child any habit, especially about hygiene. Here are a few things to avoid when teaching kids to wash their hands.
Don’t scream at them for not washing their hands.
Don’t wash their hands for them.
Don’t let their tantrum take prominence.
Don’t lose your patience with them.
To better understand the do’s and don’ts of teaching your child any habit, talk to a child psychologist to see which techniques are good and which ones are not.
How to Wash a Baby's Hands?
When you are incorporating hand hygiene for children, consider their age. Washing a baby’s hand is very different from washing an older child’s hands; here are a few tips for the same.
Using a warm wet towel, clean your baby’s hand.
Lather baby soap on their hands gently.
Using another fresh, warm towel, clean the soap off.
Soak their hands in a bowl of lukewarm water.
Wipe with a dry cloth.
It is essential to remember that incorporating healthy hygiene habits like washing hands and brushing teeth should be done from an extremely young age, so that they become a part of your kids' lives automatically!

Why to make a diaper changing station for your new born baby
Why make a changing station for your babyI am sharing today about why we need a changing table for our newborn baby. When I was setting my room for my baby's arrival, I saw and read in many mommy articles on how to set a baby room before arrival.Image by heymattallen from PixabayI sat in a crib, a changing table in our one-room apartment—a house of a room, a washroom and a kitchen. I always felt that how we were going to live in such a small place with a baby. But it turned out to be an excellent decision to not move out and find a big house later. As he started growing and walking around. I could easily keep an eye on him working anywhere while cooking or washing something in the washroom. Why make a changing station for your new bornComing back to the changing table topic, this was the best thing we did for him. Baby's are brilliant little beings. They know what we are doing and why we are doing if we tell them. Yes!! Tell them. I always tell him what we are going to do and why this is happening. What I am doing to him. And saw that he actually responded in a positive way to everything. When the baby is newly born, that's the time when you introduce things to the baby, and then they always know what is expected out of it. When we introduced him, I meant whenever he pooped, or whenever it was time to change the diaper, we took him out from wherever he was playing to this changing table. And once he was on the table, he knew what was going to happen. He was always quiet whenever We changed him. He liked to get cleaned and even now he likes to be on the table whenever we are changing him. Nowadays, he also pulls out his changing mat from its place and tells us he wants to change his diaper whenever he poops. Make a changing station at you vacation HotelNot only at home you can make sure when you are travelling, but you can also make a hotel room table or a corner credenza as a changing station. In five star hotels, it's effortless to get the station ready, by only informing them of your need. And also you can make it yourself using 2 towels on the table. But when you are not staying at five Star, you can use a blanket or request for some extra bedsheets to put on the table and make a changing station. I did it every time we were out on vacation, myself. We even took some funny advantages of this changing table. Whenever our baby was upset or not in a good mood, also when he was 2-9 months old and not in a cheerful state and crying, we used to simply pick him up and put him on that table. Like a robot, he was programmed to keep calm on that table. Hahaha! He used to be quiet over there, and we could just sit next to him, take a relaxing breath and talk to him. Ps: That was my husband's idea, and it worked. For better body posture for ParentsThe changing station or table is beneficial in keeping our sanity and right body posture. When you are standing and changing the diaper, your spinal cord is straight, and your back is not painful. On top of that, your work happens quickly. Because you have all the work view in front of you. I also like to keep our baby's changing station area well lit for better cleaning and much more like inspecting baby bum for any rashes and so on.So that's my suggestion, keep a changing station for your baby so that she knows what to expect. And babies also love to prepare mentally just like us parents. You can also try a car seat, stroller, baby carrier and baby crib right after they are born, so they get used to the things this world works on. Other than the world of the womb. Happy Parenting! Breast feeding my baby after c-section (first time being mom)
Wanted to explain my experience of breast feeding for the first time .
Though many people give many advices regarding pregnancy and breast feeding. None of our experiences is same as of others. The scenario is different in every individual.
I underwent caesarean.
So could not feed my baby immediately after surgery. And more over my breasts did not produce milk immediately after delivery. I was in the hospital for three days after delivery and nurses helped me in all the possible ways but of no use.
And I was discharged on the 3rd day.i was very eager to feed my baby but my breasts are not producing milk.i was emotionally very much depressed and disturbed as I could not feed my baby.
After going home tried every possible ways like doing breast massages, eating particular foods like garlic ,methi seeds, which alleviate the production of milk . And I even used two medicines which my gynecologist prescribed for milk production.
After one week my breasts started producing milk but in very less quantity.
In between my mental condition is very disturbed
At one point my condition is very worst because I felt very bad that I could not even feed my baby.
And finally my breasts started producing milk slowly .
And my next problem is my baby could not latch on my breasts.because my breasts are with flat nipples
And moreover my delivery was in the peak days of lockdown, so could not able to purchase products like nipple shield.
And somehow my baby learned to latch Immediately after I started my breast feeding I suffered with nipple crack and nipple soreness .
However I overcame all those hurdles and finally and satisfactorily could breast feed my baby.
Breast feeding is a very wonderful experience
And the best gift every mother could ever receive.
Iam Anna and this is my story about breast feeding . Read more

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
