Kareena's Mantras To Shed Pregnancy Weight Post Delivery
1. No Crash Diets
While crash diets may seem like a quick weight loss solution, they are really harmful! Crash diets are a strict no-no for Kareena too, even though she is very determined to accelerate her weight loss. Rujuta explained the reason behind this:
“Because we don’t want to go one step forward and two steps back, which is what happens when you do a crash or extreme diet. It leads to a lot of lifestyle disorders, such as post pregnancy thyroid, because when you’re on a crash diet, you reduce the calorie intake so much that your body is forced to slow down its metabolism.”
The idea is to always take one step at a time and to remain focused on progressive weight loss. Instead of looking for a crash diet, stick to a healthy postnatal Indian diet that gives you sufficient nutrition while also helping you keep fit, especially if you are breastfeeding.
2. Stock Up on Iron and Calcium
This is one highly overlooked detail that interferes both with weight loss and overall health after delivery! Kareena shared this very important fact related to calcium and pregnancy:
“In one pregnancy, you lose five years of calcium in the body.” This is exactly why she has been stocking up on dairy products – especially yoghurt, and milk. She said she has one tall glass of milk every single night. Milk has CLA, or conjugated linoleic acid, and short chain fatty acids. Both these ingredients in milk help in the mobilisation of stubborn fat, especially around the tummy.
3. Don't Avoid These Foods
Good news, moms: everything – from rice, sugar, to cashew nuts and jaggery, is good for your body. So do not eliminate these items from your diet. The reason behind this is that there is absolutely no point in going on a diet if in your head you are constantly obsessing over not being able to eat foods you like. In fact, there is no food that you should completely avoid. For example, Kareena shared how much she likes her tea and coffee with milk and sugar. Rujuta also agreed – cutting sugar out of your diet in completely unnecessary. It may seem hard to believe her when she says that. But well, one look at Kareena and you have no other choice but to believe her!
The main thing, as Kareena explained, is to feel happy and strong about your food choices instead of feeling tired and deprived all the time. There is nothing that you can't eat, if you learn to control the portions of the food you are eating.
4. These Foods to Fight Dark Circles
Along with excess weight, another condition that makes everything harder is dark circles. A lot of women complain about developing dark circles -postpregnancy, and they seem to be permanent! Kareena and Rujuta listed the following foods for any and every woman to get rid of her dark circles in a healthy way. The best part is that some of them, such as buttermilk, also keep your digestion intact which means speedier weight loss.
Bajra roti, jaggery, and ghee
Aaliv (Garden cress seed)
Coconut and jaggery laddoos
Til (sesame) chikki or laddoos
Chaas (buttermilk)
Foods high in Vitamin B12 (chicken, fish and eggs)
5. Do NOT Ditch Rice
As unbelievable as it may sound, Kareena shared a critical part of her diet with everyone – two of her meals in a day include rice! Yes – Kareena is having rice post delivery in order to lose the pregnancy weight. Unbelievable, no? But Rujuta explained that rice in fact helps your gut to rebuild its microflora. A lot of good bacteria that get washed away from your body as a result of delivery, can be restored because of rice.
6. Turn Your Eyes Away From The TV
This might come as a surprise to many, but watching TV while you are eating is not a good idea at all! It can actually interfere with how quickly you can lose weight after delivery. Rujuta explained that when you focus entirely on the food you are eating, when you focus on each and every bite, and eat your food in a more aware and mindful way, you will automatically make better food choices and will cut down on overeating. And right there half your problems will be solved. So, even though Kareena revealed that hubby Saif was quite heartbroken about not watching while eating, she's making this happen!
7. The Best Exercise? Walking!
After pregnancy, even getting onto a treadmill may require tremendous effort – Kareena expressed as much herself. However, the easiest and safest exercise for women to do post delivery is walking.
"Post pregnancy, when even getting on a treadmill can be tough, 20-30 minutes of walking can really help. It has helped me beautifully. I can already feel my core strength increasing.”
Rujuta further encouraged women to get as much activity around the house as their bodies may allow them to. And the reason for this is – to regulate your insulin levels. Regulated insulin levels means the body burns fats faster, and also restores the iron, calcium, even amino acid levels in a more efficient way. Kareena also swears by yoga and Pilates.
The 'Flying Fit' Technique to Losing Weight
One of the exercise rituals that Kareena followed post her pregnancy was ‘Aeriel Silk Yoga’, under the guidance of yoga instructor Anshuka Parwani. Anshuka reported that Bebo’s prime focus is on strengthening her core muscles, as opposed to counting kilos. For this, she is not only doing yoga, but also practising ‘flying fit’, a type of aeriel exercise that calls for twists and palates. According to Anshuka, aerial yoga is not about jumping but about holding postures. She further added:
“Kareena can hold the position for up to two minutes which is an achievement. Her workout is tailor-made and we keep changing the routines. Post pregnancy, it’s been a lot more about balancing out hormones and the endocrine system. She practices the ‘Aerial Silk Yoga’ which uses a low-hanging hammock to aid traditional postures by supporting your entire body weight mid-air.”

8. This Mental Mantra
Finally, and this has more to do with your mental strength - just be patient. No tricks are going to show results overnight. But if you are consistent and have faith, the results will start showing in a few months. Kareena mentioned again and again how important it was to have faith in whatever efforts you were taking in order to regain your body. Efforts that lack conviction will barely ever bear fruits.
She said, “I flaunted it, double chin and all, until the day I walked into the hospital,” giving all the women out there an important lesson in self-love. After all, everything that you do or face for your baby is quite worth it, isn't it?
All these weight loss mantras aside, the most heartening thing is that this Bollywood mom isn't obsessing about her post-baby body. She knows that these bodily changes are natural after the birth of a baby and will get better only with time. So, while she wants to lose the extra weight, she is focusing more on feeling happy and calm rather than working herself up in a frenzy about it.
"My aim is not just to lose the weight I had put on. I don’t want to do it overnight. It may take long, but I want to feel light, happy and energetic throughout the process. And that is important."

I am a working mother and there is no support from my in-laws. I can't explain how it feels to leave my baby and go to work. Initially, when I started office, after completion of 6 months my mumma papa came and supported me but due to some work they had to go back and now my baby is 7 months. I go to office leaving my children with my maid and husband.
I am sorry to say but I feel like I'm doing injustice to my child, I'm going through depression, every time I keep thinking about my doll and also the injustice of my in-laws. I'm having a government job and financial condition is also not good, so can't think of leaving the job.
I have fulfilled all my responsibilities very well towards my in-laws, but when I wanted them they didn't support me, I need answers which I'm not getting, I feel the pain of my child when she has to stay for 8 to 10 hrs but I'm helpless.

1. “I Did Not Read Any Parenting Books”
The moment you announce your pregnancy, you start getting book recommendations too – books on diet and health, books on caring for the baby in the womb, books on parenting. While there is no doubt that books can be very helpful in preparing one for motherhood, it is also true that they can be confusing and overwhelming – especially when the advice is contradictory.
Mira preferred not to read any parenting books and relied instead on her mother and sister for advice. For this young mommy, this seemed to be quite enough preparation – and indeed, nothing quite like getting it from real moms, no?
“I didn’t read any books. My family, my sisters, my mom, everyone gave me so much advice, and the best advice I actually got was ‘Don’t read any books. Listen to yourself, listen to your body’. My sisters are moms themselves, and they gave me very practical advice. I read nothing because I didn’t want an overload of information and I didn’t want to get stressed.”

2. “I Don’t Want to Give [Misha] Kale and Quinoa for Dinner”
Today, Indian moms have access to the complete global cuisine – we can pick from among organic foods, farm-fresh produce, and baby foods the world uses to feed their children. However, the best option for little ones is simple, homemade fare, and all of us moms know it. Mira too prefers to keep Misha’s diet simple.
“I think the diet should be something that’s easily doable especially when you’re a child. I think it’s better to keep it simple. (What if) I’m not able to take it forward if I’m travelling or if I’m at somebody else’s house? So you can give them dal and rice, or you can give them roti, dal and sabzi, but you can mix it up! You face challenges along the way, but you just have to manoeuver through them.”
3. “I Know Why Misha Loves Her Upma With Nimbu”
They say the cravings the mom-to-be has during her pregnancy decide what the baby will grow up to like. Science has also proved that a baby’s food preferences start getting shaped right from the womb. As per some recent studies, your baby can discern full-on flavours using their senses of smell and taste as early as 21 weeks! In Mira’s case, this sure seems to be coming true!
She says, “My craving was lots of Indian Chinese, spicy food, masala… that’s why [Misha] loves her upma with nimbu, and that chocolate that Shahid sneaks in every now and then. I see her having something and I ask him ‘What have you given her?’, and they both have a smirk on their faces. ”
Mira and Shahid have already started their daughter on a journey of cherishing food and relishing wholesome, simple fare. We think this is a wonderful habit to start early in life!
“I think food is something that one should have a happy association with. And that’s an association we want to build now. So it’s something she should look forward to, she should enjoy and it’s something she should really relish.”
4. “I’m The Strict One; He’s The One Spoiling Her”
Little babies are so adorable, how can anyone stop themselves from showering them with love and spoiling them to bits? But all parents know that balance is important in life, right from the beginning. And this is something parents can achieve together. In every household, there is the strict one, who ensures the child gets her food and naps on time and sticks to healthy eating. There is also the lenient one who loves to tamper with these schedules and sneak in little treats now and then!
Mira confesses that in her home, while she is usually the strict one, Shahid is the one who spoils his daughter no end. But at the end of the day, they have managed to create a wonderful balance.
“Shahid and I take turns. Most of the time I’m the strict one, and most of the time he’s the one spoiling her. He’s the one sneaking in the chocolate, or giving her a little sip of his morning drink. But both of us just like to have fun with her. We want to enjoy every experience with her.

Shahid as a dad is very hands-on, he wants to do as much as he can, at times I ask him to take it easy and relax. He is always so excited to spend time with Misha. He is a little paranoid when it comes to keeping things clean around Misha, and she is just like her dad, she loves looking at herself in the mirror!”
5. “Breastfeeding is an Extremely Fulfilling Experience”
Mira also shared her experience of breastfeeding her daughter, and said it was a very fulfilling, gratifying experience. We are sure this is a sentiment to which all of us mothers who have breastfed their babies can relate. Feeding your baby your own milk is one of nature’s best gifts. While not all of can nurse our babies, owing to medical problems or other personal reasons, doing it if possible is indeed a gratifying choice.
“I’d like to share from my personal experience, is if you can, and if it’s possible, breastfeed your child. I think it’s the biggest gift you can give your child, it’s the biggest blessing a mother receives, to pass on to her child, it’s an extremely fulfilling experience, it’s very gratifying. The bond that you have with your child is something that can’t be replaced. I made sure that I did it.”
6. “Becoming a Mom Has Made Me Value My Mother”
One sureshot thing that maternity does for everyone – it establishes just how a wonderful a person our mom is! In the daily chaos of life, we often take family members, especially our mother, for granted. But in giving birth and learning to care for a little baby, we realize the sacrifices and compromises our mothers have made for us. It makes us value her in a whole new light.
Mira says about becoming a mother, “It’s made me value a lot of things that I took for granted. It’s made me value my mother, made me value my parents, it’s made me value my husband so much more, and I think it’s made me a much happier persona. It’s made me a much more wholesome person.”

7. “Your Relationship with Your Child Should Be One of Friendship”
Mira is a young mom and had her daughter Misha when she was only 22 years old. Handling the stress of motherhood – both emotionally and physically – is a strenuous task for every woman, and this was the case with Mira too. She confesses that the mantra of being calm and trying to be friends with your little one has helped her manage many of the obstacles in her journey so far. Indeed, it is crucial to try and enjoy the experience of raising a baby, come what may; these days will never return.

“If you’re happy, your baby is going to be happy. When you’re feeding your child, if you’re calm and happy, that goes to your child. (So) Be calm, yes, but definitely have fun! Your relationship with your child should be one of friendship, and you should enjoy the experience.”
With little Misha’s first birthday around the corner in August, Mira is busy making birthday plans. She is not planning to throw a party, but instead organise a family picnic with her sister's kids, her parents and Shahid's parents. “I think birthday parties at such a young age, the child itself doesn't know what's happening and it gets very boring. I don't want to put her through that and neither does Shahid and I think it's a memory that all of us are going to enjoy. We want to celebrate her birth and keep it simple."
