Understanding What your Baby’s Cry Means - 5 Different Baby Cries
Babies communicate through crying and making sounds that are hard to decipher. Parents tend to categorize cries of the baby either as a sign of hunger or of wetness. After thorough research on baby cries, the Dunstan Baby Method was scientifically established to give an insight to parents on different baby cries!
They say that a mother and her baby share a special bond. A bond formed without words but mostly through intuitive understanding. However, when a baby starts crying, even an experienced mother becomes hapless. Though the different newborn cries may seem similar, there are stark differences amongst them. Decoding your baby’s cries can get tougher each passing day!
The Dunstan Method of understanding baby cries was found by Priscilla Dunstan, an Australian mother. When listening to the sounds of her newborn's crying, she discovered 5 sounds that all babies use while crying and they all mean different things! She tested her theory on different babies and found it to be true! While the theory still requires complete scientific backing, it is a great way to interpret what your little one is trying to communicate.
Reasons Why Babies Cry
Use the below expert-guide for understanding baby cries. Also watch the video below to hear all these baby cries and understand exactly how they sound!
1. Hunger Cry - 'Neh'
If the cry of the baby begins with the sound of ‘neh’, it means that the baby is hungry. Usually this sound is produced when baby touches tongue to the roof of the mouth and sucking reflex is activated.
Solution: This is one of the best baby crying cues to detect hunger. The obvious solution to stop baby from crying is to feed her.
2. Sleepy Cry - 'Owh'
Feeling sleepy is one of the leading causes of baby crying. When the baby is sleepy she is likely to cry ‘owh’ sound to indicate her drowsiness. Your baby crying at night indicates that she is tired. Often it is accompanied by yawns and rubbing of eye.
Solution: A sleepy baby just wants to be put down in a comfortable position and allowed to sleep peacefully.
3. Uncomfortable Cry - 'Heh'
A baby might be uncomfortable for reasons such as a wet diaper or is cold or itchy. Discomfort is one of the main reasons why newborn babies cry. In this case, the baby begins with ‘heh’, which is similar to ‘neh’ and can create confusion.
Solution: Try to understand the reason behind baby’s discomfort and help her calm down. Also check the room's temperature.
4. Painful Cry - 'Eair'
Pain could also be one of the reasons babies cry. A baby crying in pain will make a sound of ‘eair’ it usually means trouble in lower abdomen resulting in gas. In such case, the baby pulls up the knees to her chest or kicks her legs out.
Solution: Burp your baby through the day after feeds to ensure no gas builds up. You should hold the baby and gently tap and rub the back muscles for her to burp
5. Not-feeling-Well Cry - 'Eh'
Understanding a baby's cry that denotes feeling unwell is extremely essential, so you can help resolve the problem quickly. This cry is accompanied by an ‘eh’. It is a signal that means that the baby needs to burp.
Solution: Check if your baby shows any signs of illness or infection such as fever, breathing troubles, skin irritation, etc.
Note: Babies can feel unwell/unhappy and still not cry. Check these signs that could mean your baby is unhappy even though he is not crying.

How to Soothe A Crying Baby?
When mothers understand the meaning of the baby’s cry, it is easier to comfort her little one. Deciphering your baby’s cries is tricky in the beginning, especially the reason of baby crying at night. But once you start listening closely, you will become an expert at interpreting baby’s cries. Mothers should look for clues in different cries in babies, such as:
how long it has been since the baby’s last feed
if the baby’s diaper needs changing
if the baby has been sleeping adequately for the past few days
if the baby shows any symptoms of infection or allergy such as a skin rash, breathing problems, redness, etc.
Soothing a crying baby is never easy but with attention to the sound and syllables of the cry, it can get better with time. Some simple tricks that work for many moms are massaging the feet and toes in circular motion, blowing bubbles on the tummy, rocking the baby for some time, and singing or talking in a comforting voice. Can Taking Antidepressants Affect Your Fertility?
According to research, there is a correlation between the use of antidepressants and infertility. Some studies suggest that there is no conclusive evidence that female fertility is affected by the use of antidepressants, while most others show strong evidence that male fertility is affected by antidepressants.
There is also much debate and discussion on this topic. Firstly, antidepressants have side effects on one’s sex drive. That indirectly affects fertility. Sometimes, it can also be the other way around because trying to conceive itself can cause depression. That may make you take anti-depressants, which can affect your libido and ability to reproduce. Depression and its related problems can also impact your ability to conceive.
There is also the allied issue of pregnancy and anti-depressants, once you have already conceived. A theory suggests that stopping anti-depressants can cause a depressing pregnancy that can affect foetus health and result in preterm labour, miscarriages etc.
Does Antidepressants Cause Infertility?
Anti-depressants can cause infertility in men and not so much in women. However, one has to be cautious about concluding that anti-depressants are the real cause of infertility.
Depression itself affects one’s sex drive and fertility. Moreover, depressed people often indulge in substance abuse, over-eating, poor diet, and lack of exercise that lead to overall health issues that affect fertility. Higher levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, can also impact fertility.
Please consult your doctor for the exact cause of your infertility because it may be due to multiple factors and not merely due to anti-depressants.
1. Effects of Antidepressants on Male Fertility
Anti-depressants cause higher DNA fragmentation in sperms. This fragmentation may adversely impact the capability of sperms to fertilise eggs. This does not occur in the sperm of men who have never taken anti-depressants. So, anti-depressants may cause infertility in men. One of the most common anti-depressants is Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). These have also been associated with erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems because they impact the hormones in the body. These are temporary and not permanent problems because they go away once stop the medication. However, SSRIs have a minimum impact on female fertility.
2. Effects of Antidepressants on Female Fertility
There is not much data available on how anti-depressants affect female fertility. A lot more research needs to be done on whether it’s the depression or the anti-depressants that affect female fertility.
Studies have suggested that at best it may affect the female libido with an indirect impact on fertility. Some studies concluded that SSRIs are comparatively safer for female use while conceiving and during pregnancy. According to another study, women on antidepressants find it difficult to conceive naturally.
If you are on antidepressants and trying to conceive, be aware that the researchers have concluded that being on antidepressant medication definitely decreased the chances of a woman getting pregnant that month.
If you are planning on getting pregnant while on antidepressants, consult your doctor to know how it impacts you.
What Should You Do if You’re Taking Antidepressants and Want to Have a Baby?
So, now that you have decided to have a baby while on anti-depressants, what is the best way forward? How to make antidepressants and conception go hand-in-hand for a healthy and safe conception? This is relevant also for the husband on antidepressants. Here are some tips for everybody:
Visit your doctor and discuss whether the anti-depressants are improving or worsening your condition, or having no impact on you. Discuss how the dosage can be adjusted accordingly.
You can try out alternative therapy like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), yoga, counselling therapy, family support, diet and lifestyle changes etc. These can help you reduce dependence on anti-depressants.
If you or your husband’s family has a history of depression, discuss it with a specialist. Find out what would be best for you, your family, and the baby to come.
You can take some other medication like Viagra along with anti-depressants to boost your libido.
Studies have suggested that sildenafil (Viagra), ‘improved sexual function in 55% of men’ when taken with antidepressants. But do not self-medicate. Ask your doctor if it is safe for you.
Try to stay off the anti-depressants sometimes. Try to conceive at that time. Check with your doctor if that is safe to do with the kind of anti-depressant you are taking.
If you have acute or complex depression use of anti-depressants are necessary and can even be a life-saver. So, please see your doctor before you take any steps.
Anti-depressants and fertility are both very complex and can have life-changing consequences. Therefore, make sure you talk to your doctor before making decisions.

Boom for some, bane for few- not to be judged!
Well it's on the patriarchy and mindset that society is following from centuries that a newlywed couple is supposed to live with her in-laws.
But what's so wrong in this if your in-laws are good. There's nothing bad to live with them if they are understanding and supports the concept of marital privacy. Thinking about senario of today's generation, where women are independent and working, and couples who are desirous of growing their family, I believe support and back of in laws acts as a blessing for them.I would like to share my example. I live with my in-laws and I have no problem living with them. It's totally ok if your thoughts doesnot match with them sometimes and if it turns into an argument. It's a joint family where every member may have their own different opinion. I believe talking or communication can solve every argument. Well, not all in-laws are monsters who will treat their daughters-in-law law badly and would treat her like a care taker.
Living with in laws has its own pros and cons. Let's discuss the prons first.
1. The children would be able to know their grandparents.
2. The couple would definitely get household and financial help.
3. You will always have someone to share your household chores with.
On the other side, let's have a look on cons:
1. couple's privacy might get disturbed.
2. You may not get chance to decorate your home or clean your home by your own way.
3. Some unsolicited advices which you may not like to get all the time.
However, every coin has two sides. If a couple does not wants to live with her in laws, then their decision should be respected. The society should not treat them as villans and the daughter in law as a vampire. They have full right of marital privacy and to keep a distance to let marital life flourish while maintaining an amicable relationship with the elders. By not living with in laws certainly does not mean disrespecting elders!
By concluding this, it can be a boom for some and a bane for Few. Ultimately the decision of living with in laws or not should be respected and not to be crtisized by the society. Read more
