Breastfeeding and Periods
There are many factors that contribute to comfortable and effective breastfeeding. Breastfeeding mothers usually do not have periods as the breastfeeding suppresses the onset of periods. However, some women do get their periods even when breastfeeding. There are many factors that contribute to getting a period during breastfeeding.
When Can You Expect Your Period During Breastfeeding?
Each woman will get her first period after delivery at a different time. It could vary from between 11 to 12 weeks after delivery, to up to a year. The average time for your first period after the baby is delivered, while breastfeeding, is typically six months. There are many factors that contribute towards you becoming fertile once again after delivery. Mums with lower progesterone levels will probably get their periods faster than mums with higher levels.
Factors That Determine How Soon Your Period Returns
Factors that influence the timing of your period include:
Your baby sleeps for more than four hours during the day or more than six hours during the night.
Your baby has started to eat solid foods.
You are also supplementing your feeding with formula.
You co-sleep with your baby.
You carry your baby close to you so that he can latch on whenever he wants to.
In short, the things that influence how soon your period returns while breastfeeding is:
Nursing style
Hormones
Uninterrupted sleep
Bottle feeding
Nursing duration
Will Periods Affect Breastfeeding?
If you do get your period while breastfeeding, the chances are that you will not notice any difference. However, some women will notice a few changes. These include:
Increased nipple tenderness during menstruation.
Shortage in milk supply a few days before menstruation for a couple of days.
A slight change in milk tastes due to which the baby might not want to feed.
Your breasts may grow a little.
Menstruation should not interrupt or stop breastfeeding. The change in hormones is normal, and within a few days, your body will adjust to the changes. Nursing during your menstrual cycle will not pose any harm to your health or the babies. If you do notice a drop in milk supply, then you must consult with your doctor. She might recommend that you take some natural supplements that could boost the milk production. Be sure to also visit your baby’s physician in order to ensure that your baby is getting the right amount of nutrition. This will be usually assessed by the amount of weight your baby is gaining.
Ways to Delay Menstrual Cycle While Breastfeeding
Steps that you can take in order to delay your menstruation during breastfeeding include:
Make sure that you feed your baby at intervals of no more than 4 hours during the day, and no more than 6 hours during the night.
Let your baby feed whenever he wants to. Keep your baby close and let him latch on when he needs to.
Make sure that you do breastfeed during the night. Long breaks between each feeding session will cause your body to revert to its old cycle.
FAQs
Can I Become Pregnant While Breastfeeding, If My Period Has Returned?
Getting your periods after pregnancy while breastfeeding is a sign that your body has started to ovulate again as before your pregnancy. Every month, an egg is released by your ovaries, and your uterus thickens in preparation for a pregnancy. When the egg is not fertilised, the egg and the lining of the uterus is expelled. This is known as menstruation. Since your body is releasing eggs that can be fertilised, you can also get pregnant if you are not using any contraception. Talk to your doctor about viable contraceptive methods while you are breastfeeding.
How Can I Cope with Period Pains?
Make sure that you are getting your daily recommended dose of minerals especially magnesium and calcium. These minerals will ease the pain and tenderness associated with periods. You must discuss the same with your doctor and ask for which supplements will safe for you and your baby during breastfeeding. You can also use other coping methods that you normally would during your periods such as using a hot compress on your lower back and abdomen. You must also walk around a little as it eases up cramping.
Are Irregular Periods during Breastfeeding Normal?
Irregular periods while breastfeeding is perfectly normal and common. The stimulation of the nipple causes a change in the hormones produced that increase milk production and suppressed the menstrual cycle.
Can Periods Vanish and Then Return Again?
Having irregular periods while breastfeeding is a completely normal occurrence. You can miss a few periods while breastfeeding, and this is okay. You should consult your doctor if you are concerned about missing your period. Be sure that you have an effective contraceptive method in place in order to avoid any unwanted pregnancies.
Will the Return of My Menstrual Cycle Mean That I'll Produce Less Milk?
Some women do experience lesser milk production a few days before menstruation. You should ask your healthcare provider about taking natural supplements in order to increase your milk supply during those days.
Will I Need to Wean My Baby Because of Change in Milk Taste?
A change in breast milk taste due to menstruation does not mean that you will have to wean. This change will not last for many days. Consult with your doctor about these changes.
Getting your period during breastfeeding is common. Make sure that you talk to a healthcare provider about the various changes that come with menstruating while breastfeeding.

Interesting Facts About Giraffe (the Tallest Mammal) for Kids
The tallest animals in the world, giraffes are native to the continent of Africa. Did you know that in ancient times, giraffes were called Camelopards? This is because giraffes look like camels due to their long legs and necks, but have the colour pattern of leopards. Let us find out some more interesting things that we can learn about giraffes.
Facts About Giraffe for Children
Below are some facts about giraffes that describe how unique and interesting they are.
1. Where are giraffes found?
As already mentioned, giraffes are found in Africa. In fact, there are various types of giraffes that are spread across the continent. Different types of giraffes are found in different locations in Africa. Countries where giraffes are found, include Chad, Sudan, Niger, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. They prefer hot and dry climates, but during this time they have to live near trees. However, during the wet or rainy season, giraffes are found all over the place. The specific conditions that animals live in are known as its habitat. If you are teaching about giraffe habitats to kids, you can tell them that they live in savannas, grasslands and open woodlands. Giraffes often live in open forests as well.
2. What do giraffes eat and drink?
Giraffes usually obtain their food by roaming around their habitats. They prefer the shoots and leaves of the Acacia tree, but they consume other types of plants as well. They generally eat leaves, vines, herbs and other soft vegetable matter. Even though many people believe this fact, giraffes don’t like to eat grass.
Giraffes spend most of their time looking for food and eating it. Giraffes drink water sparingly. They only drink once in a few days, which means they don’t have to live near water bodies like ponds and lakes. In fact, giraffe’s can go three weeks without drinking water, while camels can only go for two weeks!
Giraffes belong to the same family as cows and deer, which makes them part of the ruminant family. Ruminants are animals who chew their food, swallow it, digest it partially, then bring it back to their mouths for more chewing.
3. How do they look?
An adult giraffe is around five to six meters in height, that is sixteen to twenty feet. This means they are as tall as an electricity pole, making them the tallest animal on earth. Male giraffes weigh around 1,300 kg while female giraffes weight around 830 kg.
The coat of a giraffe is a pattern made out of brown patches with yellow or orange hair in between. This helps them stay disguised in the grassy areas of their habitats. The fur of the giraffe has many chemicals that help them fight parasites and infections.
Why do giraffes have long necks? The neck of a giraffe is often more than two meters long. This is because having a long neck helps them reach food in tall trees. Giraffes also have two small horns on their heads, which are called ossicones.
Endangered Giraffe Species
Endangered species means animals which are in danger of dying out. Some types of giraffes, like the Rothschild’s giraffe and the West African giraffe, are endangered.
Other Fun Facts About Giraffe
Here are some other fun bits of giraffe information for kids:
Giraffes have been living on this planet for more than thirty million years.
A giraffe’s tongue is very long, at nearly two feet in length. This allows it to clean its ears with its tongue.
A giraffe’s heart is very large, at least ten kg in weight and around two feet in length.
A giraffe can kick with such great force that they can kill lions. This is the method it uses to protect itself from attacks from predators.
Giraffes’ brown spots get darker as they age. If a giraffe’s spots are darker, it means they are older than other giraffes.
Giraffe’s do not require much sleep. They sleep less than thirty minutes a day, and in a standing position!
A newborn giraffe can be nearly six feet in height, and weight more than seventy kg. This is bigger than a full grown adult human being.
Giraffes run at a speed of 60 km per hour, making them faster than horses who can only run at 50 km per hour.
All giraffes have a different pattern of spots on their body, meaning no two giraffes are the same. This means every giraffe can be recognized by its appearance very easily by other giraffes.
Giraffes usually sleep while they are in a standing position.
A baby giraffe can stand up and walk as soon as it is born.
Earlier people believed that giraffes never made any sounds, but now we know that they make many different kinds of sounds that human ears are unable to pick up.
Giraffes have several predators in their habitats, that is lions, hyenas, wild dogs, leopards and crocodiles.
Male giraffes use the horns on their head, called ossicones, to fight with other male giraffes.
Giraffes only eat plant food, making them herbivores.
Giraffes can eat more than forty kg of food every single day!
Giraffes live in groups of fifteen members, which are known as towers. Towers are led by one adult male.
Since giraffes drink very little water, they get most of their water from the plants and shoots they eat.
Giraffes have large eyes with excellent colour vision, which allows them to see any predators before being attacked.
The legs of giraffes are taller than most humans, at around seven feet tall.
Giraffes live for around twenty-five years in the wild. Interestingly, they have been known to live longer in captivity, reaching forty years of age.
Giraffes are beautiful animals with many unique characteristics. In addition to being the tallest mammal, they are also faster than horses. However, the number of giraffes has been reducing for the past twenty years. There were around 140,000 giraffes in the world in 2000, but now that number is around 80,000.

Tips to Help Your Child Focus Better
"Kids need a little help, a little hope and someone who believes in them". I haven't said something that we don't already know. As a woman and a parent, I stand by what I have said.We seldom see our children being restless, and we look for ways to calm them down or to get them occupied with something. As a trainer, tutor and a mother, I often try and find various ways to keep my little one engaged. On days that both of us (my son and I) are swamped, we find it hard to follow the tiny rules of parenting.Recently, on a lazy day, when both of us had a lot of time off our daily routine, we both decided just to talk! He shared many stories of what his friends said and what he said in return. He shared stories about school, and I shared stories about work. We made funny faces at each other, made silly songs together and went into a laughter riot! We binged on biscuits and chips too. We spent some time together that was completely different than other days! Here are a few things I realised, and these lessons will be with me for a long time. These are some facts that may have been mentioned multiple times; however, I had the luxury to discover and cherish them. Read on for some simple tips to help your children get over restlessness and curb their anxiety!
1. Acknowledge Their Feelings
We often ask our children to either stop screaming and crying when they are anxious or upset. Instead, tell them that you understand that they are not feeling great and happy, and if they explain the matter calmly, you can help them feel better.
2. Limit Their Screen Time
We all know the effects of screen time on our children, which is why it is essential to find alternatives. I understand and agree; it's always easier to hand your child a gadget. However, it's easier to give your child a sheet of paper and some colours. You simply multiply the fun when you join them in their drawing and colouring. Plenty of activity boxes are available online that come with some great activities to keep your child busy!
3. Give Clear and Straightforward Directions
If you want your child to do something, then break down the instructions for him. Keep your sentences short and keep repeating them for your younger children to understand.
4. Let Them Observe you
Children are keen observers. If you want them to do something, you have to show it to them. Be their guide and their leader!
5. Play and Learn
Games are always fun. You can teach your children the most complicated life lessons through fun and engaging games. I remember teaching my students a script while making funny faces and standing on one leg. Most children are aural and visual learners. Puzzles, games and flash cards are all exciting ways to help them learn.
6. Let Them Feel Your Presence
Above all the mundane things our children need, they need assurance, which lets them know that there are adults who love them. They need unconditional love, support and guidance. They need to feel secure while expressing themselves. No matter how busy you are, never shush children who are trying to express themselves.
It is always easy to attend to your children's material needs, but it's a little difficult to attend to their emotional needs. Letting your children know that they are secure, and engaging them in activities is the best way to help them explore and build focus. Once they have developed their focus and attention skills, they will be ready to learn other life skills too!
