Do Breastfed or Formula-Fed Babies Need Water? Doctors Advise Every Mom Must Follow This Rule
As a mother, no one knows your baby's needs like you do. When it comes to their nutritional needs, in particular, it's important to pay more attention to what the doctor has to say over any advice you may get from others. Many of us have been told that it is alright, even necessary, to give water to your baby who is still breastfeeding or is on formula feed. Babies also need water and get thirsty, we are told. A baby's nutritional needs vary as they grow up. It's amazing how moms learn to understand baby signals and are able to decipher what they want. There are also many times when people say that the baby might be crying due to the hot weather. He is thirsty and you need to give him water. So what should you do? Give them water?
The Water Rule For Breastfed and Formula-Fed Babies
According to paediatricians, if your baby is under six months and is being exclusively breastfed, he should NOT be given water at all, even during the hot summers. Breastfed babies do not need any supplemental water as the breastmilk itself gives them all the hydration they need. Giving them extra water is not just unnecessary but it can actually be harmful!
However, if your baby is being formula fed, he may need some water supplements from time to time. This is because formula has a higher salt level and can be harder on the baby's kidneys. Some extra water may be needed in order to excrete it. Plus, formula fed babies also tend to use up fluid faster as their metabolism tends to be slower than breastfed babies at this time. If your baby is constipated, feverish, or if the temperature is too hot, you can give a few sips of water (boiled and cooled). Even so, be very careful not to administer too much water and always discuss this with the paediatrician in person too.

Why Water Is Prohibited For Breastfed Babies Under Six Months
This strict rule may come as a bit of surprise to many of us. Water works wonders for us as adults. It is the solution for so many of our health problems, including infections or tummy troubles. But then why is it not recommended - or even banned - for babies under six months who are being breastfed? And why is it okay to give water to formula-fed babies? There are some very strong reasons for this:
1. It Can Interfere With Absorption of Milk
For your baby under six months, breastmilk contains all the essential nutrients he needs - including fluid content. Drinking water does nothing for his growth but it can prevent the absorption of these nutrients! Your baby has a tiny stomach now and might feel so full because of the water that he consumes less breastmilk or formula. This means your baby's growth rate may get affected and he will not get the amount of nutrition he needs!
2. It Can Trigger Infection
According to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO), giving water to breastfed babies can be harmful as it makes them susceptible to various infections. The water, no matter how purified, may not be clean enough for the baby and might contain certain bacteria or germs that could cause diarrhoea and malnutrition.
3. It Can Even Cause Intoxication
This is relatively rare but has been known to happen. Sometimes, if a baby drinks too much water, the water ends up diluting sodium in the body and upsetting the electrolyte balance. This can trigger seizures in the baby - a condition called water intoxication.
4. It Can Even Affect The Mother
Finally, giving water to exclusively breastfed newborns or babies under six months is not just harmful for them, but can cause problems to the mother as well. Some experts suggest that doing so may have an impact on the mother's milk supply. As per the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, supplementation of breastmilk in the first few days interferes with the normal frequency of breastfeeding. This will affect your baby's feeding in the long run.
What If My Baby Is Thirsty?
The most common challenge we as moms face is to deny a baby water when he looks thirsty, or when it is very hot outside. Many of us are even criticised for this by our family and elders. However, it is very important to remember this fact:
Babies under six months of age who are exclusively breastfed, which means babies who are only fed breastmilk, with the exception of oral rehydration solution, drops, syrups of vitamins, minerals or medicines, DO NOT require water. In fact, breastmilk itself is composed of 88% water! It is sufficient to supply the fluids your baby requires at this tender age.
Therefore, even when you feel your baby is feeling thirsty, feeding breastmilk would suffice. Nursing babies are able to regulate their fluid intake by feeding more often. They also do this by consuming enough of the watery foremilk (this is the breastmilk that comes out at the start of a feed and is lower in fat and calories) to satisfy their thirst.
However, if your baby is on formula milk, you may need to occasionally give him water.
When Should I Introduce Water To My Baby?
So, when can babies start drinking water, you may ask? The simple answer to this is - NOT before he is six months of age. The WHO recommends that water should not be fed to exclusively breastfed babies below 6 months, even during hot weather, unless specified by a physician due to a medical condition. Sometimes, if your baby has increased bilirubin levels, has excess weight loss or has longer hospital stays while under 2 months of age, he may require water supplements. However, this is strictly as per the doctor's discretion and you should stay away from feeding any water to your baby orally until he's six months old.
For babies who have crossed the 6 months mark, doctors recommend that water can be given, as long as these guidelines are adhered to:
1. Best Time To Introduce Water
The best time to start letting your baby have water is when they begin eating solids. This also helps in preventing constipation. Please remember that even for toddlers and older babies, breastfeeding shouldn't stop when solids begin. Breastmilk is an excellent source of nutrition for your baby. It also fulfills a lot of the need for hydration in your baby's body
2. How To Offer Water
Serve water to the baby in a bottle or cup for ease and convenience. Include a straw to ease the process. Children mimic what elders do, therefore, encourage your child to have water when you drink as well.
3. How Much Water To Give
Your baby doesn't need a lot of water at this time. When a 4-6 months baby learns to hold a cup, you could let them have a few sips of water in a day (not more than 2 ounces or 4 tablespoons per 24 hours). To begin with, feed 4 ounces of water a day after your baby crosses the 6 months mark. You can then gradually increase the intake
Usually, babies accept water quite easily and like to mess around with their water bottles and cups. As your baby grows up, try and inculcate the habit of periodically drinking water. It is a good habit that will keep him away from health and digestion problems in the future. If you find that your baby displays any aversion to water, or spits it up, don't force him but try again later. Also discuss this with your paediatrician. Several studies conducted testified that sleeping on the left side may be better than sleeping on the right side. In one study, it was observed that women who slept more on their left side were at a lesser risk of giving birth to stillborn babies in comparison to women who slept more on their right side. A study proved that sleeping mostly on the back or right side reduced the blood supply to the growing foetus in comparison to sleeping on the left side. Therefore, in order to be doubly sure and be safe, we suggest that you try sleeping on your left side during pregnancy.
During pregnancy, it is important to avoid any kind of stress. Researchers and scientists are of the opinion that sleeping on your left will prevent any damage to the foetus, so try sleeping on your left side. However, if sleeping on your back for some time makes you comfortable, go for it by all means. What is Growing Pain?

Although it can be an intense ache, the good news is that it can easily be treated with a mild heat pad below or above the affected areas and a simple massage on the affected area.
Parents normally dismiss these symptoms because this leg pain in children vanishes miraculously in the mornings making them think that their children might be faking the pain. But actually, that is not the case at all. Pain sometimes resolves itself in the morning and kids are again fit to be active till the pain relapses.
Causes of Leg Pain in a Child
Children are most active during their pre-teen ages, but growing pain can start as early as the age of 3 and is most frequently reported by kids in the age group of 8 – 12.
These children are very active and are frequently found running, jumping, and climbing. Because of the low threshold of pain they normally don’t pay attention to the strain until they are immobile.
Studies all over the world have found that growing pain is generally seen in children who have indulged in a full day of sports.
The musculoskeletal system of children can’t take the pressure of all-day sports at such tender age.
Growing pain can also be linked to restless leg syndrome.
Growing pain has nothing to do with growing parts of the body or the faster growth of the children who are active in sports.
Parents should not discourage children from taking active interest in sports because of these growing pains. Normally the pain stops when they stop growing, so these pains are very easily manageable and curable.
Child Growing Pain Signs and Symptoms
Growing pain normally doesn’t hit both limbs. So parents must notice that their child may have leg pain in one leg. The subtle signs and symptoms of growing pain are:
Throbbing pain like mild cramps in one or both the legs
Aching of muscles in the late afternoon or evening
Experiencing pain which centralizes at the frontal portion of thighs, calves or back of the knees
Experiencing pain which does not occur every day
There may be other symptoms like headaches or abdominal pain during episodes of growing pain
Diagnosis of Childhood Growing Pain
A diagnosis of growing pain is easily done by doctors through what they refer to as diagnosis through exclusion. This means that the diagnosis of growing pains is done after excluding all the usual suspected ailments. It is normally very easy to diagnose these pains as the patients respond very well to touch.
While patients with other types of pain don’t respond well to physical touch or massages, patients with growing pain feel rather comfortable with massages and cuddling as it eases their pain. In very rare cases, however, doctors may ask for blood tests and x-rays. This is not a bad thing as it helps eliminate other underlying conditions of leg pain if any.
Treatment
Various treatments are suggested for growing pain which presents itself as severe leg pain or leg pain at night. This ailment can be easily taken care of by simple painkillers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Aspirins are absolutely not recommended for children or teens as studies have linked aspirin use in children to Reye’s syndrome which is a very serious condition that causes the liver and brain to swell.
To determine how much ibuprofen or acetaminophen should be administered, you can talk to a doctor. It is recommended that you refrain from giving any medication unless the pain is really unbearable for your child. There are other ways to tackle these problems at home itself.
Home Remedies
For children or teens suffering from growing pains, it is very easy a suitable remedy at home. There are numerous home remedies that are very helpful in reducing growing pain substantially. These include the following:
Massaging the affected leg: Normally muscle cramping goes away with a good massage of the area. Using warm oil for massage is a great option too
Using heat pad: Using heat pads under or over the affected area tends to minimise the pain and helps your child feel relaxed after some time.
Stretching the muscles: Stretching the muscles of your child’s leg in the mornings may also help in minimising the pain at night. Please visit your physiotherapist or doctor to know more about the stretching exercise.
Citrus fruits or juices: Parents are advised to give citrus fruits like oranges or its juices (preferably freshly extracted) to their kids before playtime. This will help in providing them with vitamin C and so that their muscles can resist soreness.
When You Should Consult the Doctor
While growing pain is not the type of ailment one should worry about, one must watch out for other symptoms like the following:
Pain in the morning
Fever
Redness
Swelling
Weakness
Limping
Loss of appetite
Tiredness
Sensitivity to touch or massage
Unusual behaviour
Normally growing pains do not interfere with your child’s ability to do usual things like playing, but if you observe any of the changes listed above, do visit a doctor for a thorugh check-up.
Things to Remember
Growing pain in your child or teen is a very normal phenomenon and it can be easily tackled. If you are under the impression that your child may be faking the pains as it does not present itself in the mornings, then you are mistaken, as growing pains rarely occur in the morning. If your child is having trouble sleeping because of muscle pain, you may reassure them by telling them the discomfort is temporary and is sure to go away after they stop growing.
Growing pains are a normal part of the process of your child’s body attaining maturity. If your child is suffering, just apply a warm compress and massage and cuddle them to sleep, knowing that they will be better in no time.

PCOD and Depression - Not the End of the World, My Life Then and Now
Hi everyone.
Today I wish to write about how my life changed before and after discovering that I had PCOD.
Let me tell you that PCOD is not the end of your life. In fact, I struggled and came out of the depression that comes along with PCOD.
As you must be aware that polycystic ovarian disease can sometimes change your life for the worse.
Let me start from the time when I was in school. I had very shiny, smooth and clear skin. No pimples, no health issues. A very healthy teenager.
One day I noticed very minute pimples all over my forehead. I applied many anti allergic and antifungal ointments. Nothing happened. Day by day those minute pimples kept spreading all over my face, back and neck. Pimples were so many and extreme that my skin was barely visible. I did visit n number of doctors. Kept having medicines too.
None of the renowned doctors suggested a hormonal imbalance. Three years passed and I visited a doc in Lady Harding college. I took a few tests and medicines for a year. Everything changed. My pimples were gone.
I got married at 30. Planned baby at 31 but failed to conceive. Started having problems with periods so I visited a gynaecologist.
I was told that I had PCOD.
As a teenager when I was having acne issues, that was the first symptom of having PCOD.
I was slender always. No other symptom I ever noticed. Regular cycles.
Second symptom was at 31 when I had a bulging tummy and gastric issues.
Nobody ever bothered to get me tested when I was young. We must look for symptoms and visit doc in case there are some noticeable changes in the body.
In my case, people thought that acne is just a phase and nothing serious.
Anyway.
I read about it. Searched every website. I was devastated when I realised that having a baby will be a 50-50 chance. And some never have that chance at all.
I used to cry myself to sleep. Fights every day with husband. And family pressure was bad. People were talking things about us. I changed my eating habits. Nothing seemed to work. Praying to God helped in maintaining peace of mind.
Now What I Did Learn in That Phase
Stop eating junk food. Two or three morsels once in a blue moon won't hurt though.
Discard non-stick utensils. No plastic in everyday use. Use steel utensils. No microwave.
Eat healthy. Vegetables and fruits.
Lots of moong daal. Soup also helps.
Two bananas everyday.
Coco water everyday on an empty stomach.
Sesame seeds and walnuts do wonders. Eat everyday.
Wash cereals a lot than pressure cook.
Include lots of turmeric powder.
Flax seeds and various nuts and berries are a must to eat.
Eat preservative-free food. No canned food. No packaged juices.
Kiwi and strawberry are "power fruits".
Dates and figs should be included in your daily diet.
No curd and pickles at night.
Do pranayam and butterfly asan daily. Walk for 30 minutes daily.
Pray.
Take ur medicines religiously.
It helped me in getting rid of PCOD and a stressful personal life. I was able to conceive after 7 months.
I have a charming little boy of 8 months now.

Your arrival is my first lock down. Pregnancy news got confirmed in abroad with 30 day lock down and I came for first time in wheel chair in airport. After 24 hours of flight journey, take off and landing finally we safely landed in India from U. S. Next day of arrival I saw you for the first time in scan.
Five months went with vomiting, hospital admission due to jet lag. After five months I stepped into my home town and it's the baby shower function went amazing with blessings of relations and songs sung by my music teachers.
After three months of enjoyment it's a turning point with scan data discrepancies and doctor changing. Till eight months the doctor whom I met made me feel bad at every time appointment and used to tell c section is going to happen.
But by God's grace and with my continued prayers and pooja you arrived to me at end of nine months with normal delivery and episitomy. I was not given enema to your surprise and had both breakfast and dinner on the day you are born. Your arrival was in evening time.
Ten days before your delivery I went to a baby moon to a resort for a day with your dad in two wheeler. It's the most happiest moment in the pregnancy journey.
Your dad and grandma was with me during the delivery supporting and encouraging me throughout the day. Your birthday is on the same month as mine and eleven days after mine. Your arrival gave me confidence in life. Still the delivery is a goosebumps moment for me and I wonder how I managed. Credit goes to the doctor who gave me the confidence within a month.
