Natural Childbirth - Stages, Benefits & How to Prepare
As an expecting mother, you will have the flexibility of choosing from several birthing options. The first choice is between a natural birth and an assisted delivery, and most mothers-to-be want childbirth to be as natural as possible. This includes not having to take any pain-killing medication just before the delivery of your baby. Natural techniques such as relaxation and breathing control can help you to deliver your baby without taking any medication.
This article provides a complete guide to the process of natural childbirth, its benefits and disadvantages, along with how you need to prepare yourself to go through a natural childbirth.
What is Natural Childbirth?
In simple terms, natural childbirth is about giving birth to your child the natural way. This comprises of going through your labour and delivery without any form of medications, including epidurals for pain relief. Pregnant women, who opt for natural childbirth, are often faced with low-risk pregnancies and want to have a higher level of empowerment in their child delivery.
Natural childbirth requires that you are in complete comfort and are exercising full control over your child delivery process.
Stages Of Natural Childbirth
Also referred to as vaginal delivery, natural childbirth normally lasts for around 14 hours, although it can be much longer or shorter. As an expecting mother, you must be aware of the 3 stages of natural childbirth, which are described below.
1. Cervical Dilation
This is the first stage of natural childbirth and typically, lasts for around 6 to 10 hours (for first-time pregnant women). You can either experience soft or dramatic labour pain in the early stages of cervical dilation, during which the cervix dilates from zero to three or four centimetres.
In the second or more active phase, you may experience more labour pains, as the cervix dilates from four to seven centimetres. This phase lasts around 3 to 6 hours during first childbirth, and half the time during subsequent births.
The final phase of cervical dilation is the transition phase, during which the cervix dilates from eight to 10 centimetres. This phase typically lasts from 20 minutes to a maximum of 2 hours during first childbirth and is substantially reduced during subsequent births.
2. Expulsion of Foetus
The second stage of natural childbirth only starts after the cervix is completely dilated, and lasts for around 1.5 to two hours for first-time pregnancy. During this stage, you will experience the maximum urge towards pushing down your baby and will be followed by increased breathlessness and fatigue. You will also experience intense pain around your vaginal areas, as your baby’s head protrudes out around the vaginal opening.
3. Placenta Delivery
The third stage, of placenta delivery (also known as afterbirth), happens only after your baby’s birth. This normally lasts only for a few minutes. Most mothers do not recollect this phase, as they are so absorbed in holding their babies to their breasts.
With the placenta delivery, the process of natural childbirth is completed.
Benefits of Giving Birth Naturally
While natural childbirth is a test of how much you can endure extreme pain, it does offer many benefits, including:
Relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises that you learn during natural childbirth, can help you later to cope with any postpartum depression or to deal with any child care stress factors.
As your partner will be more involved in the childbirth process, he will develop a deeper bond with you and your baby.
Due to immediate contact of the mother with the baby following the natural birth, the mother-baby bonding is better, especially for the purpose of easier breastfeeding. It can also improve the baby’s sleep patterns, weight gain, and its brain development.
While epidural treatment can confine you to an extended bed rest, women, who undergo a natural childbirth, are able to move around during labour and also immediately after the delivery.
Disadvantages of Not Taking Drugs
While natural childbirth has multiple benefits, expecting mothers must also be aware of its disadvantages, as listed below:
1. Extreme Pain
Despite their benefits, natural pain-reducing techniques cannot completely eliminate extreme pain, which you may not be able to endure particularly if you develop any medical or pregnancy-related complication or have a prolonged labour.
2. Neonatal Death Risks
The risk of neonatal death risk increases if you are delivering your baby at home or at a birthing facility, as compared to a hospital. As compared to a full-fledged hospital, other medical facilities may not have necessary treatments for any complications that arise during the childbirth.
Options Involved in Delivering a Baby Naturally
Depending on the medical facilities available in your place of residence, you can select from a variety of child delivery facilities to deliver your baby through natural birth:
1. Home Birth
Giving birth to your baby in the natural and familiar surroundings of your home can be a viable option, and is only recommended for women with normal pregnancy and low level of risk. While home birth is only advisable for women in the best of physical health and with no ailments, you must also ensure that you have easy access to a medical facility, in case there are any complications during the birthing.
2. Birth Centres
A birth centre is another viable option for women with low levels of pregnancy-related risks. A birth centre also offers the services of an experienced midwife or a nurse, in case of any emergency. Birth centres are also equipped with basic levels of medical equipment for prenatal care and postpartum checkups.
3. Hospitals
Some hospitals also provide the option of natural hospital birth. Along with the availability of midwives and doulas, hospitals also have separate birth centre facility in their premises, which are dedicated for the purpose of a natural childbirth. Medication and pregnancy equipment are available and are used only if needed.
Importance of Midwife for Women Giving Natural Birth
In addition to helping in baby delivery, certified midwives (or nurses) are essential for women opting for natural birth, and provide a range of services to pregnant women including gynaecological checkups, along with prenatal and postpartum care. Pregnant women, with no ailments or pregnancy-related complication, can choose the services of a certified and experienced midwife, who can provide pregnancy care and advise related to natural childbirth.
Complications of Natural Baby Birth
While natural childbirth is mostly safe, complications generally occur only if you:
Fail to follow the recommendations of your medical specialist or your health care provider.
Refuse or are unable to opt for medication or any medical intervention, in the event of any complications during childbirth.
How to Prepare for Giving Birth Naturally
To increase your chances of a natural childbirth, it is important to be informed and be prepared before you enter into labour. Here are a few ways in which you can prepare:
1. Talk to Your Doctor or Gynaecologist
Before you opt for natural childbirth, it is important to talk to your trusted and experienced medical practitioner, on whether natural birth is safe for you.
2. Select the Right Facility or Environment for Your Birthing
Whether it is your home, birth centre, or hospital, you must select the right facility or environment, where you would be most comfortable going through a natural childbirth.
3. Get Information about Natural Childbirth
Read up online content to get detailed information about natural childbirth. You must also speak to any friend or family member, who has already undergone natural childbirth. Attending classes, which offer you practice in relaxation techniques that are useful during natural childbirth can also be useful.
4. Learn and Practice Natural Techniques for Pain Management
In the weeks and months leading to your delivery date, learn and practice the variety of available pain management techniques with your birthing partner. This includes techniques such as massage therapy, relaxing and breathing exercises, aromatherapy, reflexology, and more.
5. Be Prepared for Medical Intervention
Despite the elaborate preparation, complications can occur during any pregnancy stage or during delivery. Be prepared to opt for medical intervention (particularly during labour) to avoid any risk or complication.
Is Natural Delivery for You?
While only a certified and experienced medical practitioner can recommend if you should go for a natural delivery, here are some pointers that indicate your suitability for natural childbirth:
You are expecting only 1 baby, and not twins or multiples.
You are not overweight or have not gained massive weight during pregnancy.
You are prepared to go through the complete 37 weeks of your pregnancy.
You are in good physical shape with regular exercising and have stuck to the recommended pregnancy diet.
You have the full support of your family or friends.
You have a high tolerance level for pain.
How is Natural Birth Delivery Done?
Described below are the 2 common childbirth methods which will guide you on how to give birth naturally without pain:
Lamaze method, which adopts a neutral approach towards the use of medication for pain relief. Through this method, the woman in labour has complete control over deciding if they want to switch to pain-reducing medication.
Bradley method (also referred to as the Husband Coached birth), which includes a greater participation of a birth coach. This method advocates the non-use of medication strongly, unless in unavoidable circumstances. This method also focuses on good nutrition and exercise during pregnancy, along with classes for effective relaxation techniques and for pregnancy complications.
How Long Does It Take To Deliver A Baby Naturally?
There is no fixed time for natural childbirth and varies between women. Some pregnant women may go through labour lasting a couple of hours, while labour for others can last the entire day or even longer.
What Does Natural Childbirth Feel Like?
Natural childbirth can vary greatly among pregnant women, and also between the first and subsequent pregnancies for the same women. Labour pains can differ for different women, and can feel like menstrual cramping for some or diarrheal cramping for others.
Dont’s About Giving Birth Naturally
Along with the many do’s of natural childbirth, here is a list of don’ts for giving natural birth:
While listening to constructive feedback is fine, do not pay much heed to negative stories about natural childbirth.
Try your best, but don’t blame yourself if you are unable to go through a natural childbirth. Always remember that a healthy baby is more important than the mode of delivery.
Majority of women want to switch to medication, particularly during intense labour pains. Don’t blame yourself if you feel like doing the same.
Despite the high chances of pooping during the baby pushing, don’t avoid having a good and balanced meal at all times during your pregnancy.
Tips for Delivering Child Naturally
Listed below are a few tips that can improve your chances of a natural childbirth:
Focus on the relaxation techniques and breathing exercises that you have learned to manage your pain.
Manage your pain each minute, as most labour contractions only last for 1 minute.
Use visualization techniques to picturize your baby coming out the natural way.
Avoid distractions by not having too many people in your birthing room.
Hypnosis
To reduce the sensation of pain, some women can opt for self-hypnosis in order to relax their muscles during labour. This method will require lots of practice and training during the pregnancy days.
Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy, or the use of water, can be used to reduce the pains of labour during natural childbirth. Multiple birth centres and hospitals do provide large bath tubs for helping women in labour. Immersing oneself in water (at body temperature or lesser) can reduce overall body pressure, relax your muscles, and reduce the pain.
Acupuncture & Acupressure
While there is not much research into the effectiveness of acupuncture and acupressure, it is believed by practitioners that these techniques can be used in specific points to block pain impulses to the brain, along with aiding the release of natural pain-relieving endorphins in the body.
As few doctors and midwives are trained in these techniques, you may need to employ the services of a certified and skilled acupuncture or acupressure specialist to help you during labour.
What Happens After Delivery
Post natural delivery, you may experience any or all the following feelings:
Extreme level of exhaustion, along with the urge to sleep.
Shivering or feeling cold after the delivery is also normal.
Soreness in your body, including cramping around the uterus area, or pain around your vagina.
High sense of elation on what you have just achieved.
While natural childbirth has its share of benefits, you must remember that it is perfectly normal and understandable if you change your mind and switch to pain relief medication during the actual child labour.
Irrespective of whether you use or do not use medication, childbirth is a beautiful and rewarding experience of your life.

Harmful Ingredients You Need to Look Out For in Baby Care Products
From the time your baby entered the world your first instinct was to kiss, cuddle and caress your baby. Nine months of waiting was too long and now that your little one is in your arms, all you want to do is provide the best, most gentle care for your baby. This includes, wrapping him up nice and cozy, giving him gentle sponge baths, feeding him sufficiently and keeping his skin healthy and free of rashes and irritation that baby skin is usually prone to.
The obvious choice would be to opt for a gentle, natural range of products designed especially for baby skin, right? But with the scores of products available, how does one choose the one that is truly free of toxins and harmful ingredients?
Help is at hand – once you get the hang of the product labels, it is easy to see what should be avoided and what is okay.
Ingredients to Watch out for and avoid in Baby Products
In a world full of pollutants, it’s important to educate yourself about what’s in the products you’re using for your baby, so that you know what to look out for and what to avoid. Take a look at some common offenders below.
Common Toxins in Baby Oils
Major baby oils in the market are made up of mineral oils - commonly used because it is cost-effective and easy to source. However, mineral oils can clog pores and prevent skin from breathing. It also forms a layer over delicate baby skin, hindering the natural release of toxins from their bodies.
Baby oils may also contain a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol called PEG or PPG. Although, the ingredient may seem safe and natural, the process involves synthetic chemicals which can cause hives or even eczema!
Instead: Choose a toxin-free, natural ingredient laden baby oil like The Moms Co. Natural Massage Oil for your baby’s massages and gentle rub-downs. It contains sesame oil to build your little one’s bone and muscle strength and organic almond, wheat germ and avocado oils to keep your baby’s dry skin well-nourished and moisturised through the day!
Common Toxins in Baby Lotion
You know that soothing ‘baby smell’ that most people love? This usually comes from a mixture of baby lotions and products applied and the natural scent of your little one. However, fragrance, as pleasant as it may be, is a big ‘no-no’ for your baby’s sensitive skin. These fragrances are often made up of phthalates which studies have shown, could potentially cause liver or kidney damage. Phthalates are also found in soft plastic toys, baby powders, shampoos, lotions and in fragrances added to baby products.
Another ingredient to look out for is parabens! Parabens are used in products to inhibit bacterial growth and extend a product’s shelf life. While not all may cause harm, certain parabens have been found to give rise to tumors. There is no proof on which ones are harmful which is why it’s best to avoid them. Look out for 'paraben-free' products when shopping for your baby.
Instead: Apply a hypo-allergenic paraben-free baby lotion like The Moms CO. Natural Baby Lotion on your little one’s skin after a bath to keep his skin supple and plump through the day.
Common Toxins in Baby Shampoos and Soaps
Baby bath time is a time when most parents bond with their little ones. To see your little one enjoy the soothing experience is a joy you’ll treasure for life. But, you know that pristine sea of foam you see in shampoo and soap commercials? That’s usually produced by the addition of sulphates in baby soaps and shampoos. It can cause irritation to fragile baby skin. These are also harmful if they go into your baby’s eyes, affecting the developing tissue.
Check your labels for DEA/TEA/MEA. These chemicals are hormone-disrupting ones and are very commonly used in cosmetics and other consumer products as emulsifiers or foaming agents. TEA can cause allergic reactions which include dryness of hair, skin and eye infections and can also be toxic if continually absorbed by the body over a long duration. Needless to say, keep your baby far from products which contain sulphates.
Instead: Choose The Moms Co. Natural Baby Shampoo which gently cleans, softens and strengthens your baby’s hair while nourishing and moisturising his scalp with organic Argan oil and coconut-based cleansers.
Check If Your Product Label Mentions Only 'Key Ingredients'
If your baby product brand does not contain the above mentioned ingredients, remember to still read the labels for this one trick advertisers might be using. A lot of popular brands mention words like ‘pure’ and ‘natural’ loosely as marketing claims and it’s natural for trusting consumers to buy into these, assuming that such products might be the best option at the best price. Look up ingredients and their side-effects despite the mention of pure, natural and organic.
Brands also hide harmful ingredients by mentioning only 'KEY' ingredients on the label. Always look for organic products with natural ingredients mentioned clearly. For instance, certain brands like The Moms Co. products clearly mention ALL ingredients on their label and only contain gentle and natural ingredients that have been dermatologically tested.
Now that you know what to avoid and why, let’s look at why you should make an informed decision and choose one that leads you to a natural, toxin free range of products for your baby.
Baby skin is sensitive to even the gentlest of touch, including touch by a parent. This is actually a blessing because most parent child bonding happens through touch. The love hormone ‘oxytocin’ is released during this time of bonding and has effects that translate into a lifetime of trust and security between parent and baby. This is a natural phenomenon. Nature is designed in a way that is meant to preserve the health and well-being of human beings.
Sticking to natural, organic and toxin-free products ensures that your baby gets only what will meet his needs and also nourish his developing body and fragile skin. That said, make sure whatever you use is dermatologist-tested, allergen-free and certified safe to use. You cannot take even the slightest risk with your little one, right? The MomsCo. Natural Baby lotion uses organic oils like apricot, jojoba, avocado, rice bran oils to enrich the products. In addition, gentle and baby safe ingredients like shea butter and cocoa butter are added as well.
So choose wisely. While a beautifully fragrant product might be enticing, a low budget product might make you feel like you are spending wisely, no amount of satisfaction will match up to the fact that you are choosing what is best and safest for your little one’s sensitive skin. Read more

Safest and Effective Ways of Cleaning a Ceiling Fan in Your Home
For a lot of us, figuring out how to clean high ceiling fan blades in an easy manner seems like an insurmountable problem. A lot of us end up procrastinating and delaying the inevitable for as long as possible. But that results in the fan accumulating even more dust and begins to get grimy as well. The only solution might seem like disassembling the fan and cleaning each blade by itself. However, there are a few methods that are safe and effective in getting your fans cleaned in the best way possible.
Ways to Clean Dusty Ceiling Fans in Your House
With ceiling fans picking up dust over a period of time, cleaning them does become a necessity. However, before you set up a ladder to get started, there are a few alternative ways you can try out first. These are comparatively easier and can help you clean your fan within no time.
1. Using Duster to Clean Ceiling Fan?
Walk around a market and you’d be able to spot a duster with a good long handle with ease. This can be used to clean your fan in the following manner.
Try to opt for a duster that has a handle lock so that you can extend it to the length of your choosing and not worry about it sliding constantly.
There are magnetic dusters as well that use the magnetic field to hold the dust particles that are swept up while cleaning the fan.
All it takes to charge the duster is to rub it against a plastic bag. This generates static electricity and energises the duster to start picking up dust particles. Be careful around electrical connections, though.
Hook the duster around one blade and start cleaning it from the centre to the outer side. Go gently so that the dust doesn’t fall on the floor or all over yourself. Repeat with other blades.
Make sure you clean the duster at intervals so that it can keep picking up dust properly. Remember to change them after a few months if they no longer clean surfaces properly.
2. Using Vacuum Cleaner to Ease Your Job of Cleaning Ceiling Fan
The ability to try cleaning a ceiling fan without a ladder is one that is prized by many. While the aforementioned method of using a duster is a good one, using a vacuum cleaner for the same purpose makes things easier than before.
Your vacuum cleaner needs to have the right brush attachment. This should preferably be a long flat one that can slide over surfaces easily. If not, even a circular one can make do.
Attach that brush to the extension rod of the vacuum cleaner and plug it into the nozzle. Make sure it is fit tight enough to not fall off during the cleaning process. If your rod is shorter in length, you might need a small stool or a chair to elevate yourself.
Start from one end of the blade and continue right to the end. Then trace it back to the starting point to pick up any leftover dust. Do this gently so that the vacuum can pick up the dust effectively.
Once you are done with all the blades, run the vacuum around the floor beneath the fan or surrounding furniture to pick up any dust particles that have fallen off.
3. Pillowcase to Clean a Ceiling Fan
At times, you may have to resort to using a ladder and hoisting yourself to clean the fan. But that doesn’t mean you can’t clean it off in a smart manner without creating a mess. All you need is a rough pillowcase and you’re good to go.
Hoist yourself up using a ladder so that you are comfortably close to the blades of the ceiling fan.
Wrap your pillowcase around the blade of the fan, just as you’d do it around your pillow.
With the blade fully covered, wipe down the blade gently, ensuring all the dust is collected within your pillowcase. Do this with each blade one after the other.
Finally, wipe down each blade with a clean moist cloth. As for the pillowcase, dust it outside by turning it inside out and drop it in your washing machine to clean it up.
4. Using Hands to Clean the Dust Off a Ceiling Fan
In some cases, cleaning greasy ceiling fan blades might require you to get down and dirty and use your hands directly. Even so, you can get this done without much trouble and in a mess-free manner.
A highly preferred way of cleaning your fan is to make use of dusting gloves. These fit your hand snugly and can give you a degree of flexibility to clean every area you want to. In case of unavailability, you can make do with a simple moist cloth as well.
Get yourself close to the fan blades with a ladder. Make sure the ladder is firmly set in its position.
If possible, spray the blades of the fan with a cleaning spray or vinegar. These not only help remove the dust, but also leave the blades with a slight shine.
Use your cloth and wipe down each surface gradually. Start from the top side and finish with the bottom one. Try keeping your movements as continuous and aligned around the length as possible.
Precautions to Be Taken While Cleaning a Ceiling Fan
Cleaning a fan may seem like the simplest thing to do. And although it is, it certainly helps to keep a few precautions in mind. These can help avoid repetitive cleaning and even untoward incidents and accidents.
Make sure that the fan cannot be turned on by accident. Tape down the button in the off position and turn off the regulator as well for added precaution.
Even after you know how to clean ceiling fans with vinegar and pillowcases, there are always chances that dust particles may fall down on the floor. Therefore, lay down a large bed sheet to cover the floor so that you can simply lift it up and carry it outside once you’re done.
Doubly ensure that your stool or ladder is firmly set on the floor. If possible, ask someone to hold it down while you’re cleaning the fan.
In some high-speed fans, the blades can be thinner than usual, causing the edges to be sharp. These can end up cutting your fingers while you are cleaning them. Take extra care when running the cloth around the edges.
Whether the fan is grimy or just has dry dust on it, you are going to be in close proximity to all of it. Therefore, it is necessary to keep yourself protected from accidentally inhaling it in. Make use of a scarf or a handkerchief to cover to nose, mouth and face. People with dust allergies should be extra careful and make use of a medical mask if necessary. Protect your eyes with zero glasses or safety goggles if needed.
Certain fans come with light installation on them. Be sure you clean around them carefully without much disturbance. Furthermore, if they have separate electrical connection, double check if that has been disconnected or turned off properly as well.
When taking up such a task for the first few times, cleaning ceiling fans without getting dust everywhere might begin to seem like an impossibility. However, in good time, you’ll get the hang of things and begin to clean fans like a pro. You may find one method of cleaning better suited for you as compared to others. No matter which one you opt for, your fans and home can stay clean as long as its diligently done.

Use Safe and Chemical-free Cloth Diapers for Your Little One
"I want the best for my little one" are the words which are always on any mom's mind and when it comes to daily use for your little soul then the attention is even more.. Handling poop and pee of the little one is the first major task for any new mom, it could be cleaning or changing it. Disposable diapers are the first choice because we see them in advertisements on television and even at the supermarket. I felt it was time to use them, so I got them and used them on my baby, liked it as it was very comfortable but when ever I changed the disposable diaper for my son, I used to get worried thinking of the chemicals in those diapers. Disposable diapers make the lives of new moms very easy but our little one's future, after a few years is still unknown to us. I have heard of cloth diapers but many new moms around me did not have use them everyday.
I gave myself some time and went online. I threw away chemical-filled diapers which are even more harmful the earth on its disposal. In the morning time, I used cotton langots even if I had to change many times, it is still worth doing it and at night, I used cover diapers which needs to be changed twice..Cloth diapers need good cleaning and drying that's all. It will give you satisfaction that you have done the best for your little one.
Cloth diapering is pocket friendly; you need not keep a budget for diapers each month. It is more like a one-time investment and you can keep reusing it again and again.
To manage a 5-month-old, you will need a minimum of 25 langots and 4 to 5 cover diapers and washing must be done everyday.
