E. Coli (Escherichia Coli) in Pregnancy
E. coli is an infection that is generally caused by a dirty environment. Though the symptoms of this infection usually pass within a week, it is still pretty terrible while you are suffering from it.
What is an E. coli Infection
E. coli or Escherichia coli is a bacterium that can be found naturally in your vagina and gut. It is generally harmless, but the problem arises when the bacterium makes its way to places such as your kidneys or stomach. There are various strains of E. coli bacterium, out of which a few of them are known to be dangerous. These types of E. coli may lead to infections and other issues during pregnancy.
What Are the Various Sources of E. coli
While some types of E. coli are naturally present in your body, there are others which enter your body through different mediums. Some of the sources of E. coli are listed below:
Unwashed vegetables and fruits
Uncooked meat
Human or animal faeces
Non-purified or contaminated tap-water, especially if it comes in contact with agricultural or sewage water.
Water in swimming pools which has not been cleaned or treated with chlorine
Unpasteurized fruit juices
Unpasteurized milk
E. coli can also be transferred by touch. If an individual having E. coli bacteria in their hand touches you, there is a strong likelihood of you getting infected.
Symptoms of Escherichia coli Infection during Pregnancy
Some of the symptoms of Escherichia coli infection during pregnancy are as follows:
1. Nausea
It is the most common symptom of E. coli infection: a groggy feeling in the stomach or a bad feeling in the back portion of the throat.
2. Abdominal Cramps
It becomes really difficult for a pregnant woman to bear any kind of pain perceived in the abdominal region during pregnancy.
3. Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is a state in which faecal matter is frequently discharged in a liquid state. You may have mild watery stools diarrhoea or severe bloody ones.
4. Vomiting
It is the dismissal of the innards of the stomach through the mouth. You might feel nauseous before vomiting.
5. Fatigue
Fatigues is simply a feeling of extreme tiredness that can be a result of physical exertion, mental exertion or illness.
6. Dehydration
Dehydration means excessive loss of water from the body. Dehydration can be caused by the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract that cause diarrhoea or vomiting.
7. Gas
The human body produces gas naturally as a result of digestion. Sometimes, it produces even more gas if you consume certain fibre-rich foods. It is probably a normal amount even if you think that you are suffering from excessive gas. Infection caused by the E. coli bacteria affects your GIT, thus producing more gas.
8. Blood in Urine
Blood starts to appear in your urine if the infection is not diagnosed on time.
9. Fever
It is said that you have a fever if your body temperature is above the normal range of 98.6 F. In general practice, a person is not usually considered to have a high fever until the body temperature rises above 100.4 F.
10. Pale Skin
Pale skin or paleness is an unusual lightness of the colour of the skin compared to your normal complexion of the skin. It may have been caused by a decrease in the number of red blood cells or reduction in oxygen and blood flow. It is also known as pallor or pale complexion.
11. Skin Bruising
The bruise is an injury or mark where the skin has not been cracked but is darker in colour.
Does E. coli Affect Pregnancy
E. coli infection in a pregnant woman can affect your pregnancy by increasing various complications:
E. coli can cause diarrhoea which results in loss of body fluids leading to dehydration. This can lead to issues like neural tube defects and low amniotic fluid.
In some rare cases, the pregnant woman may start to bleed heavily. Thus, there might be a chance of preterm rupture of membranes, miscarriage, premature delivery or stillbirth in case of severe E. coli infection.
It is also reported that E. coli infection can cause low birth weight.
How to Treat an E. coli Infection During Pregnancy
Pregnant women can take up a course of antibiotics to treat E. coli infection. You should ensure that the antibiotic is safe for the foetus and the mother. Some antibiotics that can be taken for treating E. coli infection are Nitrofurantoin and Cephalosporins. Most healthy people recover from E. coli within a couple of days without taking any kind of medication.
Note: You should take antibiotics only after getting a prescription from a medical professional.
How Can You Prevent an Escherichia coli Infection in Pregnancy
To avoid E. coli bacteria during pregnancy:
Make sure you clean your hands with a disinfectant after touching raw meat.
Always wash your hands with soap after using or cleaning the toilet, handling linens or dirty towels, changing diapers and touching animals. This is because E. coli is found in urine and faecal matter.
Make sure you cook the meat properly.
You should clean any surface that touches raw meat with a bleach or disinfectant.
Drink only pasteurized milk, ciders and juice.
Put all fruits and vegetables in a container of salted water before consuming.
You should avoid swimming as the water may be contaminated.
If you think that you might have E. coli infection, consult your health care provider at the earliest. It can be easily treated if it is diagnosed on time. One of the best ways to prevent E. coli infection is to ensure that you have a clean surrounding and try to eat properly cooked meals.

Baby Brain Development - How to Support Healthy Brain Growth
A growing baby develops based on a number of criteria and aspects. Their organs develop not just based on genetics but other external aspects like nutrition, environment and exercise. The brain is one of the most complex and mysterious organs in the human body - it develops through experience; it can be nurtured and taught. No two brains perceive any experience in the same way. This is because no two babies are the same. This is why it is important for parents to understand how they can help support their baby’s brain development in a healthy and sustainable manner.
Development of Baby's Brain from Newborn to Infant
The stages of brain development for your baby can be case specific but doctors will have a number of benchmarks to refer to which are based on the average growth of children in their age group. This helps doctors identify any possible delays in growth that may indicate an underlying health or development issue.
Infant brain development can be tracked through milestones such as baby's ability to recognise her parents, wave at familiar people, grasp objects, play with a toy, use a teething ring, etc. All these milestones show the baby’s ability to absorb information, process it and implement it. This information supports brain growth, which further supports the ability to gather and use more information.
How Can Parents Improve Baby's Brain Development?
As a parent it is normal to wonder how to develop baby brain functions in a healthy way. You, as parents, are the only ones who can support the development of your child’s brain over extended periods of time. The most effective way to support their development at infancy is to interact with them and help them interact with their surroundings. This is done through numerous activities and exercises.
Activities That Help You Boost Your Child’s Brain Development
There are numerous ways in which you can support the growth of your baby’s brain through activities:
While holding or playing with your baby, make sure you hold their gaze, look them in the eye and interact with them. This fosters eye contact and development of proper eyesight.
Speak to your child frequently, make sure the tone is soft, and speak slowly. This helps your baby imitate sounds and enables them to mimic mouth movements. This can help them learn to speak.
Be patient, kids can grow at different speeds. Don’t try rushing your child’s development. Don’t use belittling language or call them names out of frustrations, babies can be very attentive and perceive emotions better than adults. This can harm their confidence and delay their development.
When sitting with your child, interact with them as well as their toys, this can help them understand the link between their actions and consequences thereof.
Ensure that you help your baby interact with different surfaces, softly place their palm on smooth glass, stone countertops, carpets, and floors. Guide their palm across these surfaces. This enables them to learn through touch and understand the environment around them.
Let them watch age-appropriate television for a limited time.
Sing to your child. Try involving their surroundings in the songs. This lets them build their audible sensory abilities and lets them recognize various tones.
When in a bath with your baby, play with the water, involve toys like rubber ducks. This will elicit responses from your child like laughter. This also teaches them about various environments and the effects of these environments.
To learn more about what you can do to help your child learn, talk to your paediatric specialist. They can give you other techniques and ways to help your baby grow. Always participate in age-appropriate learning activities. Remember that brain development activities for 1-year-old children are not the same as the brain development activities for an 18-month-old child. Talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have about your child’s development, if they share your concerns, they will evaluate your child more closely before figuring out what the next step should be if any.

Add a little dark chocolate to the oh-so-luscious match of caramel and orange, and you have the perfect recipe for indulgence this Christmas. What's more, you don’t need to be a wiz in the kitchen or spend an entire day to prepare these delicious tidbits. Serves
Preparation Time
Cooking Time
8 People
40-45 Minutes
2-3 Hours (chilling)
Ingredients
50 g powdered sugar
¾ cup freshly pressed juice of oranges
250 g dark chocolate, finely chopped
70 g heavy cream
2 teaspoons brown sugar
Pinch of salt
2 tablespoons candied orange peel, finely chopped
Cocoa powder, drinking chocolate powder for dusting
Method
Step 1
In a saucepan, combine powdered sugar and add 2-3 teaspoons water.
Step 2
Keep the pan over low to medium heat so that the sugar dissolves.
Step 3
As this comes to a boil and the syrup starts converting into an amber-colored caramel, keep swirling the pan constantly so that the caramel gets cooked evenly. This will not take long; a couple of minutes at best.
Step 4
Remove the pan from the heat and add the orange juice slowly. Be careful while doing this because it will splatter and hiss as the juice hits the hot caramel.
Step 5
Keep the pan back on medium heat, and keep stirring until the caramel re-melts into the juice.
Step 6
Let the syrup cook over medium heat until it reduces by half. You should continue the process until you have 1/2 cup syrup remaining.
Step 7
Remove from the pan from heat and keep aside.
Step 8
Next, heat the heavy cream and brown sugar in another pan until it just starts boiling and the sugar gets melted. Turn off the heat and add grated chocolate in this cream-sugar mixture and mix quickly.
Step 9
Add a small pinch of salt, and keep stirring until the chocolate has melted into the cream.
Step 10
Add the warm caramel orange juice, you had prepared before and the candied orange peel. Stir to combine.
Step 11
Pour this mixture into a pan lined with parchment paper, and level with a spatula.
Step 12
Leave to cool and then cover and chill for 30 minutes or until just slightly firm but still malleable.
Step 13
Remove from the refrigerator and cut into equal sized squares. Grease your hands with very little oil.
Step 14
Now pull out single squares and roll it between your palms to form a ball. Continue this process until the mixture gets exhausted. Place individual truffle balls on truffle wrappers.
Step 15
Place in the fridge again and remove after 2 hours or until completely firm.
Step 16
Before serving, dust the top of the truffle mixture with a light coating of cocoa powder mixed with a little drinking chocolate powder.

A. Some women may have vomiting throughout their pregnancy. The most common reason for vomiting during the third trimester may be gastritis. Make sure you eat small frequent meals, preferably every 2 hours. If your baby's weight during checkups are adequate..u needn't worry much about this. You can also consult your doctor and take anti emetics and PPIs if the vomiting is bothering you or interfering with your daily activities.

Q. Is it okay is the baby does not pass stool for one day?
POOJA KOTHARI

A. For breastfed infants it depends on age. During the first month of life, stooling less than once a day might mean your newborn isn't eating enough. However, breastfed infants may go several days or even a week between bowel movements, using every drop they eat to make more baby, not poop.
