Your 30 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Your little one is 30 weeks old now! He is not only growing physically, but he is intellectually becoming more aware too. Your baby loves your company and also of those he sees on a daily basis. He is becoming more social, and his motor skills are developing at a fast pace. In the following article, we shall discuss what all is going on with your 30 week-old baby and what you as a parent can do for your baby’s growth and development.
A 30 Week-Old Baby's Development
At around 30 weeks you may observe that your baby has better cognitive ability and memory. He may anticipate what is going to happen next. If you pop the lid of a cookie jar, he will know he is going to get a treat. He may even wait for his father to return home from work at evening. He is relying more on sensory skills of touch, feel, hear and smell. Your baby is a keen observer of what is happening around him. Your baby’s fine motor skills are becoming better too, and therefore you will hear him dropping, shaking, throwing and banging his toys and other objects. He may have mastered the art of picking up food using his fingers and may feed himself too. The 30-week old baby growth spurts may include your baby’s better-grasping ability too, which will improve further as he grows. But you will still not know whether he is left-handed or right-handed by this age, though some babies may show this preference as early as by three months of age also. However, most babies will use both their hands in the first year after birth.

A Thirty Week-Old Baby's Milestones
Here are some milestones that your baby may achieve by the time he is 30 weeks old:
Your baby understands dimension by this age, and thus you may notice him stacking or placing his toys by size.
Your baby has stronger muscles by this time; he may crawl and may even turn his back while sitting.
Your baby has a better understanding of emotions. He may laugh, cry and show other emotions that people around him exhibit.
Your baby may imitate various sounds that he may listen. He may even copy some of your actions. This is a good time to teach him little gestures such as bye and shaking hands.
These are some of the major milestones that you may notice in your baby. However, every baby is different and may achieve different milestones at different times.

Feeding
Your baby is almost eight months old. By this time he may have started eating a wide variety of solid foods. You should introduce him to almost all foods items that the entire family usually eats. Do not exclude a food item just because you fear that it may lead to an allergic reaction unless it has already happened. However, refrain from feeding egg in any raw form to your baby. It is also recommended that you introduce one food at a time, in order to see how your baby reacts to it. You may continue to breastfeed your baby along with feeding him solid food. Some babies may develop lactose intolerance, and under such circumstances, soy milk may be used. Your baby’s immune system is developing and therefore offering him a wide range of food reduces his risk of food sensitivities. However, if you notice any kind of allergic reaction from any food item, refrain from giving such food item to your baby and get immediate medical help.

Sleeping
At 30 weeks your baby is battling with developmental and growth issues, and thus you may notice an erratic day napping schedule, which is very normal in babies of this age. Your baby may be having two to three short naps during the day. Your baby at this age may want to sleep snuggled up with you as they do not like sleeping alone in their cot. This behavioural change may be due to separation anxiety too. You may find tending to your baby’s clinging needs daunting if you have other children in the house to take care of. Some doctors may recommend sleeping in the same bed with your baby, as it would help both the mother and the baby to have a peaceful sleep. It is also noticed that babies around this age reduce their daytime feeding and increase their nighttime feeding; this is their way of managing their feeding needs without interrupting with their daily activities. Your 30-week old baby sleep may seem little disrupted, but soon your baby may follow a good sleeping schedule.

A 30 Week-Old Baby's Care Tips
Here are some tips that you may follow to help your baby achieve developmental milestones in a better way:
It will be a good idea to sing rhymes and songs to your baby. You may also read to your baby. This helps your baby to develop better listening skills and sharpens his memory too.
Your baby at age is like a copycat and may copy whatever he sees people doing. You can buy him mini-me toys like a toy phone.
Your baby may be going to separation anxiety issues during this time. You may play games such as peek-a-boo to teach him that things that go away come back too.
You should buy toys of various colours, patterns and shapes to help your baby with his motor and thinking skills.
You may help your baby to master the newly developed muscle movements. Though refrain from helping a lot like your baby needs to learn things on his own. Help him stand, sit or grab an object by guiding his hands and legs.
Tests and Vaccinations
When you take your baby for his 30-week health check-up, your doctor may want to test the following:
Heart and lungs- to see any abnormal heartbeat or breathing troubles.
Eyes- to check any eye problems, such as a blocked tear duct etc.
Mouth- to check for any new teeth or signs of thrush.
Ears- to see how your baby responds to the sounds or to check any infection.
Head- to check the fontanel or the soft spot on the head.
Body- to see any rashes or infection and will also check various muscle movements.
Your baby may have to take the following vaccination:
DTaP
Hepatitis B
Hib
Rotavirus
Flu
You may inquire about your baby’s vaccination schedule with your doctor.
Games and Activities
You may try playing different games and engage your baby in various activities to help your baby develop better cognitive, fine motor, listening and communication skills. Your baby loves getting involved in activities that include sounds, singing and talking. If you pause for a moment while singing or humming, your baby may look eagerly towards you know what’s coming up next. Following are some games and activities that you may involve your baby in:
For better cognitive development:
You can give various sound making toys to your baby like a bell, xylophone, rattle etc.
You may help your baby feel different textures.
You can make a toy box with the objects of different size, shape, colour and texture.
For developing better motor skills:
You can play catch and catch with your baby.
Help him hold one object each in both the hands.
Let him throw, drop or bang various objects.
Give your baby some toys and let him make the mess and work out his little fingers.

When to Consult a Doctor
All the above-mentioned milestones are usually achieved by a 30-week old baby. However, some babies may achieve these milestones sooner or later than 30 weeks, and this is very normal because every baby is different. However, if your baby is exhibiting any of the following symptoms, it is recommended that you consult your doctor as soon as possible:
Your baby is not able to sit, even with support.
Your baby is unable to crawl or drag himself when he lies on his tummy.
Your baby faces difficulty in getting things close to his mouth.
Your baby does not try to grab that are in close vicinity.
Your baby is unable to roll in any direction.
Your baby exhibits no emotions or expressions towards known people.
Your baby has extremely rigid and tight muscles, and he stays stiff.
Your baby does not make usual vowel sounds.
Your baby does not squeal or laugh.
Your baby looks tired, disinterested or your 30-week old baby fussy and floppy.
If you notice any of the above signs in your baby then it is recommended to seek immediate medical help as your child may be having developmental problems. With timely medical intervention and care, most of the developmental issues can be handled.

Hives(Urticaria) In Children
Hives are a result of the human body's reaction to an allergy. A chemical called histamine is released whenever the human body encounters an allergen. The reason for the allergy can vary across multiple sources, such as:
Insects
Coming in contact with certain insects or being bitten or stung by bees or ants, may result in the development of hives as a reaction.
Food items
From consuming specific items to even touching them, food remains one of the primary reasons for the development of hives. Milk, peanuts, soybeans, shellfish have been known to cause allergies in some children or might cause hives popping up on their body.
Animals
Being around pet animals such as cats or dogs can result in a reaction in your child if they are allergic to animal hair.
Illnesses
In certain situations, diseases such as a viral infection or common cold might result in red spots and hives on your child's body.
Temperature fluctuations
Temperature fluctuations, either in the environment or the surroundings, may result in your child's skin reacting to it, causing a breakout of hives.
Since hives are the human body's reaction to an unwanted chemical, certain medicines or antibiotics can result in the body reacting to them, and causing hives.
Usually, hives in children are rather mild and can be treated at home with simple remedies. Antihistamine tablets for oral consumption are the go-to method for the treatment of hive breakouts. At times, using a 0.5 to 1 per cent topical cortisone cream has been known to provide substantial relief from the stinging sensation around the hive.
In uncommon situations, if the rash gets severe over time and your child does not respond to oral medication and antihistamines, it is best to get them checked by a doctor. If accompanied by angioedema, a doctor's attention is highly recommended, and they might suggest a stronger medication to bring the swelling under control. In extreme cases, a shot of epinephrine might be administered to your child to reverse the allergic reaction.
What Are Hives?
Urticaria, welts, swellings, are some of the alternatives words that are used to describe baby hives. They appear as red rashes on the skin, in different shapes and sizes, and cause itching in those areas. A very well-known and defined sign of hives is a pale red central area that is slightly swollen, surrounded by a ring of red rash.
Causes Of Hives In Children
Hives are almost always a result of an allergic reaction, although pinpointing the exact source of the reaction can be quite challenging. A usual case of hives stays for around 24 hours and then disappears. This small window of a day can provide interesting clues for discovering the source of the allergy. It could be a new shampoo, maybe a bug that bit them in the garden, a new food that they tried, or they played around with a cat or a dog.
Hives that last more than a day, ranging from a couple of weeks to multiple months, are difficult to track down to a single source. Usually, it's a food allergy in most of the cases. However, consumption of certain medicines has also known to cause allergic reactions, resulting in hives. Chronic hives are somewhat rare in children. So, it's best to monitor the diet of your child and opting for allergy testing to discover the source.
Signs And Symptoms Of Hives in Babies And Kids
Ordinary red rashes and itches appearing suddenly for no reason.
Red spots or welts in several places of the body.
Rashes that flare up, itch a lot, swell, disappear in some time, and reappear in a different area of the body.
A cycle of rashes flaring and settling happening over the course of days or weeks.
Chronic hives, that are known to last for more than six months.
Anaphylactic Shock
In extreme cases, the appearance of hives can trigger an anaphylactic shock in the body. Within an hour or so of the reaction, an anaphylactic shock to the presence of hives might result in breathing difficulty, nausea, blurred vision, itching, sneezing, or even loss of consciousness.
How Is The Diagnosis Of Urticaria Done?
The first step towards the diagnosis of urticaria is the examination of a distinctive red rash on the body. The source of the allergy can then be traced by understanding multiple factors associated with the rash, such as-
When and where the rash was first observed
What food was consumed and the daily diet
Any new medications consumed lately
Presence of animals or pets in the surroundings
Insect bites
A family history of urticaria
Treatment
Various types of medication are used in carrying out the treatment of hives, that range of controlling a mild reaction to handling an extreme case of a hive breakout. Benadryl for hives in toddlers is a prevalent method of providing relief and controlling the reaction.
1. Antihistamine
If hives are present all over the body, antihistamine medication such as cetirizine can help alleviate the itching and swelling.
2. Take Histamine Blockers
Doctors may suggest taking histamine blockers orally or via an injection to help relieve the hives. Cimetidine and ranitidine are generally used, although they might cause indigestion as a side-effect.
3. Corticosteroids
In case the child doesn't respond to over-the-top medication, the doctor might recommend stronger topical or oral corticosteroids, like prednisone. These are used only for a short amount of time.
4. Getting Asthma Drug Injected
Certain studies have demonstrated that injection of omalizumab, an asthma drug, can help relieve hives without any side effects. It does cost higher than the usual methods of treatment.
5. Combination Of Asthma Drugs And Antihistamines
In extreme cases of hive breakouts, the doctor might combine asthma drugs with an over-the-top prescription of an antihistamine. These, at times, may result in behaviour and mood changes in the child.
6. Immune System Suppressants
Chronic hives may need to be treated with immune system suppressants. Drugs such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus limit the immune system's response to hives, but also have side effects of a headache and nausea.
Complications
Chronic and acute hives can cause various complications, such as a deeper swelling of skin tissue. These may further impact the mood of the child and cause irritation.
Complications Of Angioedema (Giant Hives)
Angioedema is caused by a build-up of fluid in the layers of the skin, resulting in large swellings. These usually affect the areas of eyes, lips, genitals, hands, and feet. A constant presence of further angioedema results in a deterioration of mental well-being causing stress and unhappiness.
How To Soothe The Itchy Skin?
Soothing itchy skin can provide quite a relief from hives. Taking a cold bath or a shower can help with it, as it also washes away any allergens that might be present on the skin. Application of a soothing cream might also help with the same.
Home Remedies For Hives
Wash the area to remove any allergens present.
A cold bath with a sprinkle of baking soda can help soothe the skin.
Applying a cold compress to the skin helps calm the itch.
Tips To Take Care Your Child During Hive Infection
Make sure your child does not end up itching the hives.
The clothes should fit comfortably and not be too tight around the hives.
Avoid exposing the child to extreme temperatures or temperature fluctuations.
When To Consult A Doctor
If the hives do not disappear within a few days, consult your doctor understand if it is a case of acute hives.
In the case of chronic hives, visit your doctor as soon as hives are observed.
If your child experiences an extreme reaction to the hives, inform your doctor immediately.
Hives in children are usually mild and can be treated very easily with simple home remedies. In most cases, they are no more irritating than the common cold. With simple care and medication, your child can be back to normal in no time.

Your Complete Diwali Celebration Guide During Pregnancy
Diwali is that glorious time of the year when the whole town looks splendid and shining. If you're apprehensive that pregnancy can limit your enjoyment, don't worry. Use these Diwali celebration ideas for pregnant women and have a fun festive season!
From cleaning your house to putting up decorations to gorging on good food – Diwali is truly the king of Indian festivals. But wait, you are pregnant. You need to ensure that this Diwali is happy and safe not just for you but also for your baby!
Cleaning Home For Diwali During Pregnancy
House cleaning forms an essential part of Diwali – right from your kitchen to the plants in your garden to a change in interior décor. However, pregnancy can limit the kind of chores that are safe for you. That doesn't mean you must stay away from decoration completely! Just keep these tips in mind:
Take on the more creative of projects and leave the physically draining ones for the rest of the family. For example, you can try out some diya decoration ideas or help with the designing of your new bedroom plan. But avoid dusting, climbing ladders to put up decorations, or lifting heavy weights.
You will tend to get tired more easily, and also be clumsier than others. This is because your centre of gravity shifts with your growing bump. Say a complete no-no to any tasks that put you at the risk of falling or bumping into things.
Be wary of chemical cleaning products. These may contain harmful substances that you should stay away from during pregnancy.
Diwali Feasting When Expecting
Think Diwali and your mouth starts watering! What's the festival of lights without good old mithai and namkeen? But if you are pregnant during Diwali time, keep these pointers in mind while feasting:
Hard as it can be, limit your consumption of sweets and deep fried foods. You are at a higher risk of acidity and heartburn when pregnant. You could go in for baked foods as opposed to fried ones. Also keep the portions small and timed through the day rather than all at once.
Avoid eating out during Diwali. There is a higher chance of food adulteration and poor hygiene since restaurants are crowded during the festive season.
Another thing that goes without saying is keeping away from alcohol. This is the top contender in the list of what not to eat during Diwali when pregnant! Also keep your consumption of caffeine in check. Replace those coffees during family gatherings with healthy drinks such as lime-water, fruit juice and milk shakes.
Other Safety Precautions For Deepavali During Pregnancy
Finally, if you are worried about festive wear, fire-crackers and the other random stuff that the season is famous for, here are a few helpful tips for you:
Avoid going in for beauty treatments that involve too many chemicals or require you to bend over. In fact, stay away from repeatedly bending over to touch your elders' feet as well! Everyone will understand.
Firecrackers are safe as long as you maintain a distance from them. Try not to expose yourself to harsh noise, glaring lights or crackers with too much smoke. Twinkling fairy lights and gentle sparklers are your best friends (and your baby's too!)
Ensure you get sufficient sleep and snack often. Try not to over exert yourself on Diwali day.
Dress up in loose, comfortable clothes that allow you enough breathing space.

Miracles do happen especially when the human spirit takes over'.
