11 Weeks Pregnant Ultrasound
By around eleven weeks, your baby officially becomes a foetus from an embryo. Distinct facial features and genitalia are developing in your baby, and the eleven-week scan gives an exciting preview to the way your baby is growing inside you. The scan performed at eleven weeks is also medically significant for ruling out any anomalies, syndromes, or malformations.
Purpose of the 11 Week Ultrasound Scan
The first-trimester pregnancy scan is always very special as it gives a glimpse of the developing baby. The week 11 scan gives you a sneak peek into how your baby looks, for the first time. It also is the earliest stage at which the doctor can pick up certain anomalies in the baby. The purpose of the week 11 scan is manifold. Here are some reasons why the 11-week scan should not be missed.
During the 11-week scan, the foetus is screened for chromosomal abnormalities like Down's syndrome. The results of the scan are evaluated along with the results of the blood test to arrive at a diagnosis.
The position and size of the placenta are checked.
The amount of amniotic fluid is assessed.
The nuchal translucency (NT), measured as the translucent space in the tissue beneath the neck of the foetus, is used as a risk assessment factor for the syndrome. Nuchal translucency is also used as a guideline to rule out any congenital cardiac disease.
Multiple pregnancies, if any, are clearly visible during this scan. Twins are usually visible at this stage as two clearly separate gestational sacs.
General pregnancy health assessment is made.
Gestational age of the baby is checked based on the growth of the foetus.
How to Prepare for Your 11 Week Scan
As the uterus is lying low in the abdomen, going with a full bladder can help in getting a better vision of the foetus. You can drink a few extra glasses of water and prepare yourself for the scan. However, some sonographers prefer a partially full bladder. Wearing comfortable and loose clothes that can easily expose the abdomen can facilitate the procedure.
How Long Does the 11 Week Ultrasound Take?
The first-trimester ultrasound at eleven weeks is usually a simple procedure that takes about a few minutes. An experienced sonographer measures the nuchal translucency quite easily. They also check for other vital growth parameters like crown-rump length, the diameter of the gestational sac, placental position and size, etc. The position of the foetus can delay the time taken for the scan. Sometimes the baby may be turned to one side or curled up, making the measurement of the tissue below the neck very difficult. Usually, the sonographer suggests repeating the scan after some time until the correct foetal position is available.
How is the 11 Week Ultrasound Scan Performed?
The week 11 scan is usually performed trans-abdominally. A cooling gel is applied to the lower abdomen, and the transducer device that sends ultrasound waves into your uterus is moved over the tummy to get a clear view of the foetus. The images of the baby are taken from the top and the sides to get a better view of all the internal and external organs.
What Can Be Seen in the Scan?
Many mothers are anxious about the 11-week ultrasound. Although it is a very crucial scan that rules out any abnormalities in the foetus, there is no need to panic. It is probably the first time you get to see your moving baby, so be prepared for a lot of excitement.
The baby at 11 weeks, looks more human with well-formed hands and limbs. Your baby's head and bones are well developed at this stage. The body is still disproportionate with a large head and a comparatively small torso. You can catch your baby bouncing and kick in the watery amniotic sac. The baby's genital organs are beginning to form in this week and may not be clearly visible in the scan. Your sonographer may not be able to conclude on the gender of the baby at this stage. The foetus at this stage is only an inch or two long but has a rapidly developing organ system.
What If Any Abnormalities Are Seen in the Scan?
If the 11-week foetus ultrasound indicates the possibility of chromosomal abnormalities, then you can talk to your doctor about the other confirmatory tests you can take. The NT values reflected in the scan are not conclusive evidence for a foetal abnormality. A blood test is performed to determine trisomy 21 (Down's syndrome) and trisomy 18 and to corroborate the findings from the scan. The doctor may also suggest an invasive procedure called amniocentesis to check for the DNA of the foetus. There is a slight risk of miscarriage and couples can decide to take it after discussing with their genetic counsellor or doctor.
To avoid the invasive procedure, you can wait for the anomaly scan at week 18-20, which can detect some mild indicators of abnormal growth. Based on all these indicators, the doctor or genetic counsellor will help you with the diagnosis and advise you about the course of action.
The week 11 NT scan is crucial in terms of identifying any congenital anomalies in the foetus. Although the scan result alone is not enough for a diagnosis, it definitely serves as a guideline for further tests.

How to Avoid Strangulation and Suffocation?
Safety at home is equally important as outside. Yet accidents do have a way of happening in the most unexpected moments. Here is how you can avoid unpleasant events concerning your babies or at least be ready to handle them with diligence when they occur.
You might be surprised, but Asphyxia (which also includes choking and strangulation) is usually the most common cause of child accident deaths. Children under 5 are the most prone to it. Strangulation or suffocation can leave an after-effect on your toddler’s health, and also on his psyche. In the worst case, it could end up in loss of life. Yes, that’s scary, and that is why you should take precautions around your home to ensure there is no cause that can lead to your little one getting strangled.
Tips to Avoid Strangulation
Don't leave any drawstrings attached to the clothes of the baby; make sure you have cut them all before the baby wears the dress. You should not leave any strings attached to the hood or as an accessory.
Make sure there is no pacifier around the baby’s neck. Never attach pacifier to baby’s clothing with a string or ribbon.
Don't let any wires reach the floor and make sure you remove the tassels and the strings attached to your curtains or windows.
Do not let any wires dangle onto the floor, or be accessible for your toddler. You also need to keep in mind the height where he/she reaches when you carry him.
Cut their food into very small pieces as they do not have strong teeth to chew them. Avoid giving them toffees, marshmallows, grapes, nuts or candies.
Read the instructions on toys before buying them for your child. Keep the age group in mind and only then buy something. Most of the clay toys and small dolls are not for children below 36 months.
The baby’s toys should not have too much fur that comes out from the toy. This fur can get stuck in the baby’s mouth or cause breathing problems.
How to Avoid Suffocation
Babies will only sleep peacefully when they get a safe environment, so make sure you use a baby cot or crib for their sleeping. More often than not babies have risk of their own parents suffocating them sometimes because of the weight or even by holding the baby too tight. The adult blankets are also too heavy for the baby and he might not be able to breathe or push it away.
Do not cover their faces while they are asleep. Avoid using room heater very close to their face.
Babies have a fixation for putting everything in their mouth and not leave the object easily. Nappy sacks are very thin, so they can easily cling to the face of a baby as he breathes in.
As babies move around fearlessly, sometimes their heads can get stuck in a small nook or corner of a furniture or in between furnitures.
Plastic bags can be very risky as babies can pull it over their face and can get stuck. They can also roll over the bed and get stuck in plastic. Make sure all the plastic bags are stored away from your babies, in a closed cabinet.
Do not throw used plastic bags on the floor or cover their pillows with plastic sheet.
Make sure you cover the small things or keep your baby away from furniture that has pointed edges. Better yet, babyproof your furniture.
You can keep a few phone numbers handy; like that of a doctor, close neighbours and friends who can help you. Keep a first aid kit and make sure that you have all the regularly used medicines.
You cannot dump all the furniture from your house, but you can always make sure that the living room of the child has a healthy environment to play and grow. The best that you can do is supervising your child when he is awake; more so after he starts to walk. However, sometimes things do happen, but with a quick response, you will be able to handle any situation. Read more

Check if Medication Is Spoiling your Fitness Challenge
Exercise and diet control not helping you lose weight? Don't lose hope. Open your medicine cabinet and check your medication. The drugs you're taking could be the culprit. But, how do you know which are the pills that make you gain weight?
When you do everything right and you are still not losing that stubborn love handle, maybe it isn't your fault after all! Certain medications cause weight gain in women by causing you to retain fluid, making you feel hungrier, and even by slowing your body’s ability to burn calories.
Medications That Cause Weight Gain in Women
1. Antidepressants
While these medicines boost the amount of certain ‘feel good’ chemicals in your brain, they also control your appetite and how your body breaks down calories. Some antidepressants that can make you gain weight are:
Citalopram (Celexa)
Fluoxetine (Prozac)
Mirtazapine (Remeron)
Sertraline (Zoloft)
Paroxetine (Paxil)
2. Mood Stabilisers
These drugs are used to treat conditions like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. They cause you to get hungry too. Some of these medicines that can cause weight gain are:
Clozapine (Clozaril)
Lithium (Eskalith)
Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
Quetiapine (Seroquel)
Risperidone (Risperdal) ||
3. Diabetes Medicines
Diabetes drugs are meant to control blood sugar in different ways. Some make you more sensitive to insulin, while others cause your body to release more insulin before or after meals. With diabetes, it’s very easy to gain weight and some of that weight gain could be from medication you take like:
Insulin
Glimepiride (Amaryl)
Glyburide (Diabeta)
4. Corticosteroids
These chemicals are meant to reduce pain and inflammation. They can be taken as shots, they can be rubbed onto the skin as an ointment, they can be inhaled, or taken orally. Corticosteroids affect your metabolism too and make you gain weight. They go by several names and include:
Methylprednisolone (Medrol)
Prednisolone (Orapred, Pediapred)
Prednisone (Deltasone, Prednicot)
5. Drugs that Prevent Seizures and Migraines
Some medicines affect hormones that control hunger and gradually make it harder for your body to assess when it’s full. These include drugs that control seizures and migraines such as:
Amitriptyline (Elavil)
Nortriptyline (Aventyl)
Valproic acid (Depacon)
6. Beta Blockers/Heart Medicines
Drugs like beta blockers are meant to reduce stress on the heart by lowering blood pressure. But, they also decrease your body’s reaction to exercise, making it difficult for you to lose weight. Beta blockers make you feel tired and leave you without much energy to work out. Some of them are:
Acebutolol (Sectral)
Atenolol (Tenormin)
Metoprolol (Lopressor)
7. Anti-Allergy Drugs
Medicines for allergies block the action of histamine, which causes many of the symptoms of allergies. However, these pills can make you gain weight too. They include:
Cetirizine (Zyrtec)
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
Fexofenadine (Allegra)
These are just some of the drugs that may cause weight gain though they’re also life-savers for many. If losing weight is a constant struggle for you, make sure it’s not because of any drugs you may be on. However, don’t stop medication without consulting your doctor. If you do think your weight gain is from medicines you may be taking, speak to your doctor for alternatives and begin your journey to a happy and healthy life. Read more

An Apology to My First Child
This story is a heartfelt apology to my first child. I wish I could raise my first baby yet again the way I'm now raising my second one.
My daughter is now 4 years old and my son is 1.7 years old. Being a first-time mom, you are not aware of a lot of things and also, there are always extra suggestions that you get from a set of people around you. You get confused while taking care of your child. However, with my second baby, I am much more confident about my routine of care and food.
Now I wish I could do the same with my first child, as there are many habits she doesn't have because she isn't used to a particular routine right from her childhood. One example I can think of is that my second baby has gud and aate ka halwa for breakfast daily, which is an achievement for me. But my daughter doesn't like these foods because she never used to have such a habit when she was younger. I feel bad that I didn't do this with my daughter. My mother-in-law forced me to bottle-feed my first baby and I could not speak at the time. But when it comes to my second baby, I could stand up and say that I want my child to have more of solid foods and milk would be of second preference, which is what doctors also say.
My daughter is not healthy from within, I feel. She has not developed an interest for food whereas my boy who's 1.7 years old only has started having food on his own using a spoon.
So this is just a wish and a apology for my 4 year-old-daughter. I wish I could get back those 4 years and pamper you with much, much more love!
This is also a message for new moms. Listen to your elders, but do what you think is right for your child. Older moms are important but today's moms are much more educated, so there should be a balance between the decisions and advice of both when it comes to taking care of your kids!
