As 'Zindagi Unlocks', Kids May Be at a Higher Risk of Contracting Hepatitis A: Be Prepared, and Vaccinate Them on Time
The pandemic has left children stuck at home for long, finding enjoyment only in e-learning, playing video games, using mobile phones and watching TV. There has been little opportunity for them to interact and play with friends outdoors. But life is gradually opening again, unlocking again. It’s a joyous time for kids especially as they are stepping out more now and indulging in activities important for their growth and well-being. While it’s wonderful to get back to life as we knew it, it’s extremely important for parents to keep an eye out for not just their safety from COVID-19 but also from other life-threatening diseases.
Going out for kids will also mean indulging in their favourite outside food. But this also means that there is an increased risk of food and water-borne diseases. One such disease is jaundice, commonly caused by the Hepatitis A virus, one that needs urgent attention.
Watch this video to know why.
What Is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection that is caused by the Hepatitis A virus1. Its severity can range from a mild to severe illness which can last from a few weeks to months. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that globally more than 10 crore people get infected with Hepatitis A every year2. While this liver infection is generally considered mild and common among children, it can be serious in some cases3. Among older children and adults, infection usually causes more severe symptoms, jaundice being one of them occurring in more than 70% of cases4.
Hepatitis A infections do not cause chronic infections; however, they can be severe5. If left unchecked, in some cases, it can lead to severe complications like acute liver failure and even death in rare cases. Outbreaks occur worldwide, especially in areas with poor sanitation6. Therefore children, who are not previously exposed to this virus because of living in more hygienic urban areas may evade Hepatitis A infection in early childhood leaving them at risk of severe infection in adolescence and adulthood.7
How Does It Spread?
Hepatitis A spreads through ingestion of water and food contaminated with the Hepatitis A virus. It is primarily transmitted from person to person by the faecal-oral route or when someone ingests contaminated water, or foods that have not been prepared, stored or served in a hygienic manner1.
Watch Out for These Signs and Symptoms
Not everyone who is infected has symptoms. Symptoms (if developed) usually appear within 2 to 6 weeks after infection1. They can include:
Fever
Vomiting
Grey-coloured stools
Fatigue
Abdominal pain
Joint pain
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Jaundice
Remember, not everyone who is infected will show all the symptoms. In few cases, symptoms can last for as long as 6 months.1
Can It Be Prevented?
Yes, Hepatitis A infection can be prevented. The easiest ways to protect against hepatitis A are by1,2.
Drinking clean water and cooking food well. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid raw meat and shellfish, and wash fruits and vegetables in clean water.
Wash your hands with soap and water after using the toilet, changing a baby’s nappy and before cooking food and eating.
Ensuring a hygienic environment in and around your home.
Vaccination. This helps to protect your child against Hepatitis A.
Treatment for Hepatitis A
There is no specific treatment for Hepatitis A and hence it is wise to prevent the disease by taking preventive measures. Vaccination is a reliable way to prevent Hepatitis A1-2.
When Can Hepatitis A Vaccination Be Given?
Vaccination against Hepatitis A can be given to children aged one year and above. Therefore, global and national health authorities like WHO and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommend Hepatitis A vaccination to all eligible children 2,7.
Consult Your Pediatrician for More Information
With this much-needed awareness around Hepatitis A, parents should seek the help of their doctors regarding prevention through vaccination to protect their kids.
As ‘Zindagi unlocks’, collective awareness, getting the right guidance, following precautions and health measures like vaccination, can keep children healthy and disease-free.

Raising Boys - Things to Keep in Mind for Mums and Dads
Young boys are energetic, loud, active and prone to being roughhouse, and getting them to listen to you all the time is challenging. The goal is how to raise a boy to be a good man who will turn out to be responsible, affectionate and full of character. Consider these tips for raising your boy.
Dos and Don't s When You Are Raising a Boy
Parents of boys understand very well that they can be quite a handful; however, with some clever parenting methods, it’s possible to ensure your boys grow up to be great men. Here are some tips on how to raise a boy correctly:
Dos
1. Monitor Their Aggression
There’s a growing trend of concern among parents lately about their boys are being drawn to violent toys such as guns, swords, weapons or violent video games. What parents perceive as violence when boys pretend to be killing a bad guy is something the child fantasises as saving the world. Pretend-play such as cops and robbers or zombie apocalypse that has fantasy aggression is normal for boys and is even useful in teaching them what is right from wrong. Surprisingly, these games also promote healthy friendships and build self-confidence. However, you need to monitor how much aggression is being expressed in the games. If your child is too rough, other kids may not want to play with him. This is a good time to teach him about empathy and fair play.
2. Let Them Have Their Rough and Tumble Play
Children are physical most of the time; it is a way in which they express their affection. Jumping off furniture, or a hug that seems more like a full body tackle, or rolling on each other in seemingly aggressive play comes quite natural to kids. Although it is exhausting to you, it’s normal and healthy for them. The rough and tumble play fosters positive relationships among children, boys included, and builds their physical intelligence. Then there will inevitably be moments you will have to take them to the emergency room for a stitch or treating bruises from a fall. Although no parent likes to see their child getting hurt, it’s not possible to cushion the whole world around them.
3. Inculcate Polite Behaviour
Part of building good behaviour in boys means you channelise their energies in more positive ways rather than trying to stifle it. Although trying to discipline your boy’s feisty behaviour can push you to your limits, it’s important to keep calm. Parents must at all times avoid responding with their own aggressive behaviour to their boy’s aggressive play. Severe scolding or spanking might curb their behaviour momentarily, but it is seen that children who are severely punished turn out to be aggressive in the long run. Therefore, adopt an approach where you praise them for their good behaviour and when they are well mannered and remind them of that whenever they misbehave. Show genuine interest in things they find appealing and ask them questions about it, whether they like collecting toys or bugs in a jar, stimulate deeper thinking to stop them from becoming impulsive.
4. Emphasise Kindness and Empathy
Boys are seen as 'naturally' rough, but that is mostly the product of society's rigid rules around masculinity. Thus, sensitivity can be taught to boys. To encourage their sensitive side to develop, show them the importance of kindness while playing with others by sharing their toys and being gentle with pets. Read them stories of great men in the past who worked for peace and justice in the world. Search for opportunities in your community such as a volunteer mentoring program where your boys can work with strong role models (both male and female) and learn from them. Explain to them the importance of putting themselves in the shoes of another to understand their pains; it is a start in building empathy in your boys. As the saying goes- Teaching your child not to step on the bug is just as important to the child as it is to the bug.
5. Go Easy on Obsessing Over the Dirt and Noise
When you are parenting kids, there’s no way you can stop them dirtying or muddying their clothes, shoes, toys or anything for that matter. The only way to achieve peace is to let it go, the dirt washes off eventually, but the memories of fun play is cherished for years. Trying to keep things perfectly clean is nothing short of torture for both you and your boys. Therefore, relax the rules a little and allow them to play in the mud as long as it is safe and healthy to do so. As for noise, you can allow them to play in a designated room upstairs or any other room away from your living room. If their noise levels are still too high, take them to a park or a playground so that they can run around and release all that energy.
Don'ts
1. Being an Over-controlling Parent
Boys are heuristic learners; that is, they learn better from their experience. Boys seldom listen to you when you tell them to not swing too high on the monkey bar in the playground. The painful lessons are ones that stick in their minds, and it’s a good idea to let them learn about risks from natural consequences. However, that doesn’t mean you let them charge into something recklessly. The trick is allowing them to experience smaller risks and its consequences that help them understand the varying levels of dangers associated with reckless action.
2 Not Teaching Him Early on About Being Gentle With Everyone
As children, boys can harmlessly play a little rough with their peers, mothers, siblings or friends, however as they get older and reach puberty most boys who are used to roughhousing may not realise that they could hurt someone inadvertently. It becomes absolutely vital then to not engage in roughhousing. They need to be taught from an early age to never to be rude to, hurt or disrespect anyone, especially women, starting from their mothers and sisters. This behaviour has to be reinforced by both the parents by educating them often about how good men behave. Parents should lead by example and tell boys that they should be gentle because older children, peers as well as adults do not enjoy being poked, yelled at, kicked or prodded even playfully.
3. Letting Him Skip Household Chores
Never let your boy skip household chores - it’s critical to engage him in the activity, so he can learn to take up responsibility. This is especially important when you’re going over everything crucial on how to raise a boy child as a single mother. Let him take part in everything from grocery shopping, to cooking and housekeeping.
4. Telling Him That Real Men Don’t Cry
Encourage emotional expression in boys; it’s always better for them to understand and express their emotions in a healthy way, which also includes crying. Learning how to better be in touch with their emotions is a critical skill they need before they can be kind and empathetic men.
5. Telling Him That Boys Don’t Get Scared
To build the right idea of bravery in your boys, they need to understand that everybody feels fear and it’s normal to do so. However, being brave is doing the right things, despite your fears and overcoming them.
Although it can be tricky to stay one step ahead of your son to do your best as a parent, being patient with him and allowing his natural energies to express itself while you direct it in constructive ways is the best way to go.

Protein Powder for Kids - Is It Safe
When a person thinks of protein powder, the image of a shredded adult with monstrous muscles comes to mind. Protein powder is often mistaken to be something that gym-going people consume in copious quantities, in order to build their muscles quicker. However, protein powder may be necessary for your children, too- it can play a huge role in the development of the body of your child.
What Is Protein Powder?
Protein powder, as the name suggests, consists mainly of proteins which are an essential requirement for the human body. Protein powder for children mainly comes in three types, which are whey, soy and casein protein. While all three of these can be consumed by children, whey protein is mainly recommended by doctors. This is a water-soluble milk protein, which has the essential amino acids which play a huge role in the development of the child and also helps your child in his intake of the required amount of protein.
How Much Protein Do Children Need?
Obviously, children need much less protein than their adult counterparts- they do not need to go to the gym to work out, after all. Protein does help in the growth of children, so it is a necessary cog in their diet. The amount required by children varies according to their age. For children younger than three years, around ten percent of their calories must be derived from proteins. This figure rises to between ten and thirty percent for children older than the age of 4. For adults, the figure lies at a lofty 35%- this highlights how essential proteins are to the child.
The exact amount of protein required for the child also depends upon the weight of the child. However, around 15 grams of protein is required for the healthy development of a child.
Is Protein Powder Good for Kids?
This question is one of the most frequent ones that parents ask, before buying protein powder for their children. The stigma around protein powder has grown to such a level that consuming it is considered almost akin to taking steroids, as the powder is consumed mainly by gym-going muscle-bound guys. However, protein powder is definitely safe for children although the intake should be controlled.
In a normal scenario, your child might be getting the amount of protein he requires from the daily diet that he consumes. Fruits, nuts and vegetables are rich in protein; soy protein shakes are not required if your child consumes enough of those. Protein shakes may contain an excess amount of protein, which the body will turn to fat and this can contribute to obesity in the child. Also, a large amount of protein being consumed frequently can result in kidney damage and dehydration in the child, so the amount needs to be controlled with extreme care.
Types of Protein Powder for Children
There are three types of protein powder for children, which are:
1. Whey Protein Powder
This type of protein is also called the ‘complete’ one, as it has all the essential amino acids which play a huge role in the development of the child's body. Whey protein powder for kids is derived from cow milk, therefore, is best suited for small children. The production of leucine, an amino acid starts as soon as this protein enters the bloodstream of the child.
2. Casein Protein Powder
Casein protein powder is also derived from milk, but it does not have all of the amino acids mentioned above. Casein is also harder to digest, especially for children- your child may feel full for longer than usual after consuming casein powder.
3. Soy Protein Powder
The third type of powder, soy protein powder has been touted to have great benefits for children- however, there is no conclusive evidence about this. In fact, soy milk is one of the eight major foods that many children are allergic to. Children who have allergies to dairy products usually are allergic to soy too, and soy milk is not necessarily better than dairy in any way. Therefore, you are better off avoiding soy products unless the doctor recommends them.
How to Choose Kids Friendly Protein Powder?
Choosing the best protein powder for kids can be difficult, here are some tips you a use:
Ensure that whey isolate is present in the powder if you are looking to buy whey protein powder for your child.
Buy powder with fewer amounts of artificial sweeteners, as they can contribute to obesity in the child.
Choose a flavour that is easy to consume for children.
Choose protein isolates over concentrates, as the former is better and purer compared to the latter.
A high-sugar content in the powder can be counterproductive, as it only gives a short-term energy boost for the child.
Protein powder may become a necessity for your child if he is not getting enough of it through his diet. If you choose to give your child protein powder, do not forget to consult a dietician regarding the recommended intake and the downsides to the powder you choose!
