How to Boost Immunity during Pregnancy
While pregnant, you need to take extreme care of yourself, because you're not just looking after yourself, but your baby as well. Your immunity is of top concern, as is your child's.
Your immune system is like a shield - it protects you from illness, germs, toxins and infections, by providing a resistance. Your body's own defence system, the immune system is one of the most important systems in your body, without which the functioning of your organs and overall health can be compromised.
Pregnant women are said to be more prone to diseases and infections, as opposed to women who are not pregnant, so it is imperative that an expecting mother does everything it takes to keep her immune system top notch. This is because the body lowers its immunity, so that the mother's body does not reject the baby.
Effects of Weak Immune System in Pregnancy
So what happens if you have a weakened immune system during pregnancy?
What happens to you, happens to your child. So, if your immune system is weak, you're making it easier for infections, toxins, and germs to enter and thrive.
You'll see that you end up having a flu way too many times than usual.
Tiredness and fatigue is common during pregnancy but if your immunity is low, then you'll see a whole new level of tiredness and fatigue.
Morning sickness is common during pregnancy too, but like tiredness and fatigue, you'll see more of this than usual, thanks to a weak immune system.
A strong immune system means a healthy foetus. So if the growth of your baby is not up to the mark and development is slow or stunted, blame it on your weak immune system.
Tips to Boost Immune System When Pregnant
Here are a few tips on how to boost immune system when pregnant
Take probiotics regularly. Probiotics are found naturally in foods like kefir, yoghurt, and sauerkraut, but you can take supplements that are found over the counter in medical stores or the supermarket as well. Probiotics help in increasing your immunity as well as your child's. It can help protect your child from any asthma and allergies in the long run as well.
Make sure you eat a nutritious diet. Pregnancy can cause you to crave a lot of weird food, and while it is okay to indulge once in a while, you need to remember that you're eating for two people - you and your child, and your child needs good, healthy food. Make sure you have enough protein, carbs, fat, vitamins and the whole lot that falls under nutrition - these are foods that help boost immune system during pregnancy.
Make sure you get enough sleep. Your body needs to be well rested during pregnancy and more so if you plan on boosting your immunity. Your body is dealing with a lot right now, physically, emotionally and physiologically. Give it some good rest.
Make sure you have a positive environment around you. Laughing, as a matter of fact can help boost your immunity too, as surprising as it sounds. Wallowing in a negative environment is the last thing you need during your pregnancy.
Stack up on Vitamin D. This helps with your immunity, boosting it and helping with fertility.
Zinc is another element that you need to make sure you consume too.
Keep yourself hydrated. Water really should be the elixir of life, considering how much we depend on it. Make sure you have an intake of 8 to 12 glasses of water a day without fail.
Keep yourself warm, especially during winter. Don't get drenched in the rain, and stay away from too much sunlight too.
Exercise regularly. This is highly beneficial for both you and your baby as the body really needs exercise. It can help keep a tab on your body temperature, regulate blood flow, and help with hormonal balance as well.
Follow the above points and make sure you take pregnancy in your stride with a smile. This can be a trying time for you, but you have the license to go ahead and pamper yourself with all the love and care in the world. Begin by boosting your immunity, so that both you and your child have a healthy life.

How to Handle Shyness In Children & Ways to Overcome It
Every child has his temperament and has a unique manner of interacting with people and situations around himself. Such kids feel extremely uncomfortable in social situations and could make extensive efforts to stay away from them.
How Much Shyness is Too Much?
Generally speaking, being shy should not bother you or the child. Shy kids turn out to be better listeners and do not get pulled up for bad behaviour at school. It can be termed as too much if your child seems to be unhappy or is unnecessarily bashful than normally expected. Speak to a professional if your child refuses to go to school regularly or avoids birthday parties, group activities and other events involving large groups.
Causes of Shyness in Kids
The following are a few probable causes of the shy kid problems your child may be facing. These causes often work as a combination so watch them carefully:
Personality: A child who is emotionally sensitive is more likely to grow up and display a shy behaviour as a teen or an adult too.
Genetics: A child’s genetic make-up can be partly responsible for affecting this aspect of its personality.
Lack of social interaction: Children may not develop necessary social skills if they have been isolated socially in their early years.
Fear of failure: Children, when pushed beyond their capacity to perform, may begin to fear failure which can be perceived as shyness
Criticism: When parents, siblings or close friends criticise, bully or tease a child in his early years, it could lead to shyness.
Family: Overprotectiveness from parents can lead to fear and inhibition while in new or unfamiliar situations.
Learning Behaviour: Shy parents often unknowingly pass on their shyness to their kids by example. Parents are a child’s first role model, and kids could learn from imitating their behaviour that they observe in public.
When Could Shyness Be an Issue in a Child?
When parents observe that their child is shy, they are likely to wonder if this behaviour is normal or should it worry them. It could be normal for a child to cling to its parents when meeting new people or in an unfamiliar situation. It can become an issue if it does not seem to be a temporary phase. Most children grow out of it as their interaction with kids of their age increases. It should concern you when you notice your child playing alone while in a group. Check with teachers if your child is shy with children of his age in school or the neighbourhood.
Complications of Child's Shyness
Your child’s quality of life can be severely impacted if he or she is constantly shy which includes:
Non-participation in childhood activities like sports, dance, music or drama which are rewarding and fun.
It can lead to fewer opportunities to practice social skills and develop as an individual
Reduced self-esteem and feelings of isolation or insignificance
Cannot achieve full potential due to fear of being judged
Higher levels of anxiety
Trembling, blushing and stammering are physical effects that can further embarrass the child.
Tips to Help Your Shy Child
As a concerned parent, you would wonder how to help a shy kid overcome this condition. Firstly, understand that shyness is a personality trait and not your child’s fault. Accepting it is the first step to help your kid. Let us see what else you could do to grow in confidence:
Discuss the issue: Kids become submissive and shy if they are subjected to nasty fights, divorces or sexual abuse. Keep them away from such situations as much as possible. Seek professional advice if your child has been exposed to any trauma. Speak to his teachers and ask about his behaviour in school as this will give you insights. Share strategies you have learned over the years to overcome shyness. Practice them along with your child which will enhance his confidence.
Encourage communication: You can ask your child to interact and speak openly with children of his age. Organise a play session on weekends and invite neighbours, school kids or cousins of his age so he can be in control of his behaviour. Encouraging your child to open up and display emotions openly is one of the best ways to promote interaction.
Show Empathy: It is best not to sympathise with shy kids at this could encourage such behaviour, and he/she could feel more ashamed. Do not be judgmental and reiterate that he is a fine human being and doesn’t have to feel bad about himself.
Motivate and Encourage: Most parents do not know how to overcome child shyness, but it does not need any special skills. Encourage the child to create his own identity by doing things he likes to without worrying about others. Point out his strengths and skills and help him grow as an individual.
Avoid tagging: While you are at a social gathering, do not label him as a shy kid as this will shatter his confidence. Tell him how you found him to be excellent at handling a particular situation while at a party or an event. Encourage positive behaviour whenever you notice it as this will enhance confidence and he will repeat it every time he is in a group or a large gathering.
With time and effort, a shy child can learn that interacting with people can be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. While shyness may not be erased completely from a child’s temperament but parents can play a role in giving emotional support and confidence to the child.

Back Labour - Reasons, Symptoms & Treatment
Pregnancy and labour take a toll on you physically, emotionally and mentally. Exercise, diet and rest are the three most important things to pay attention to in order to keep yourself strong and fit. However, there are several issues that can arise during a pregnancy that you may not have prepared for. One of them is back labour.
What Is Back Labour?
Pregnant women sometimes experience pain during labour, which can occur in the abdomen and pelvic region but is most common in the lower back. This is known as Back Labour. It occurs in around a fourth of all pregnant women, and the pain is usually worse when going through contractions. This is most commonly assumed to be due to the force exerted by the foetus on your lower back.
What Does Back Labour Feel Like?
Back labour pain is at its peak during and between your contractions, making it nearly unbearable during this time. What does back labour feel like in the beginning? The pain you feel during labour is usually manageable at first, feeling like standard backaches. However, when contractions begin, an incredible burning feeling in the lower back could emerge, dwarfing the pain caused by the labour itself. Back labour pain is consistent with jumps in pain when the contractions arrive. Some women have described it as feeling as if your back is breaking with every contraction.
Causes Of Back Labour
Studies have shown that there are multiple factors that affect back labour. Before you know how to control and cope with back labour pain, here are some of the reasons of back labour:
Position of the foetus: One of the most common reasons of back labour is how the baby is positioned inside your body. The ideal situation is when the foetus is upside down with the chin tucked into the neck and facing the back. But if your baby is facing the abdomen, its head can put pressure on your tailbone, causing more pain as your baby gets bigger. This is known as a posterior baby or a sunny-side up baby.
Women with small waists: Women who have small waists tend to have babies longer than their torsos, which means that the baby exerts pressure on the mother’s back instead of the cervix due to lesser space.
Stiff ligaments: Pregnant women with rigid ligaments can make it tricky for the baby to find the right position in the uterus.
Wrong posture: Standing without bending knees slightly or tipping forward the pelvis increases the risks of back labour.
Injuries to the back or ligaments: A history of back or ligament injuries greatly increases the chances of developing back labour.
Shape of the pelvis: Occasionally, some women have pelvises that can only accommodate a foetus arranged in the posterior position.
Signs And Symptoms
Back labour contractions are associated with several symptoms:
Pregnant women with back labour are likely to have a much longer and more painful birth.
One of the early signs of labour back pain is the inability of women with posterior babies to feel when their contractions have started.
Labour contractions that do not occur at regular time intervals
Extra time spent pushing during labour due to the awkward position of the baby
Risk Factors
While there are no direct risks linked with developing back labour, there are a few factors associated with the posterior arrangement of the foetus.
Being overweight
Having a prolonged pregnancy
Being pregnant for the first time
Medical induction of labour
Interestingly, sometimes, foetuses can be in a posterior position but not cause back labour in the mother at all. In a 2005 study conducted among women in labour, moms-to-be with posterior babies were not likelier to complain of back pain than women who had downward/sideward-facing babies. However, the study was inconclusive as 90% of the women eventually opted for an epidural for pain management.
Will It Cause Complications For Baby Or Me?
While back labour can be extremely uncomfortable, it cannot hurt either you or your child. However, it is possible for posterior babies to drop into the birth canal, which can cause complications like difficult labour, exhaustion and vaginal tearing. This situation can be controlled by using forceps to pull the baby through the birth canal, episiotomies to enlarge the vaginal opening, or caesarean surgeries.
How To Improve Foetal Position
As back labour is most commonly caused by the baby sunny side up, fixing the position of the baby can help with the back labour pain. Some of the techniques used to improve foetal position are:
Sleeping on the left side: This makes the baby move around, removing pressure from the back.
Leaning in while sitting: Leaning forward in a sitting position also convinces your foetus to shift its position. The ideal way of doing this is by straddling a birth ball or an armless chair.
Stay active: Indulging in a few hours of cardio exercises every day can help shift the foetus around, especially downward-directed activities like breaststroke swimming.
Pelvic tilts: If you are carrying a posterior baby, it is essential to perform these exercises multiple times a day. Pelvic tilts help reduce the pressure on the spine.
External cephalic version: Posterior babies usually switch positions a few weeks before pregnancy. But if your baby still hasn’t moved, there are some procedures you might want to consider. The doctor can use a technique called External Cephalic Version to manually turn the baby into the delivery-friendly position while using ultrasonography as a guiding system.
How Do I Get Relief From Back Labour?
Labour time is stressful enough for an expecting mother without having to deal with the physical discomfort of back labour. The treatment for back labour is easy to do and quite effective.
Using hot and cold compresses alternatingly on your lower back
Steady counter pressure via a back massage will relieve some pain
Taking a warm bath or shower
Applying pressure by having cylindrical or spherical objects, like bottles or balls, rolling down your back
How To Prevent Back Labour?
It is not possible to tell if you will experience back labour when giving birth. However, as mentioned above, fixing the position of the baby is one of the best methods to prevent back labour. In addition to getting your baby the right way up, visiting your chiropractor regularly will help to manage any developing pains. Ensure you get an ultrasound done to check the baby’s position often so you can start treatments as soon as you find out your baby is posterior. You can also visit a childbirth training class to receive advice and pain-relieving techniques from someone trained in the subject.
Other Comfort Measures
There are a few other methods to have a comfortable pregnancy without back labour. Some of these are:
You could give birth in a standing or kneeling position as it puts less pressure on the back
Staying on your hands and knees throughout labour is also helpful in relieving back labour
An alternative technique is injecting sterile water into the lower back, which gives pain relief for several hours. It must be noted that while this is popular, the mechanism behind how it works is still unclear
Although back labour is incredibly painful, it does not indicate that anything is wrong with your pregnancy. The outcome of most back labour cases is a normal birth. However, a few women might require an epidural to take care of the pain. The most important thing you can do is to stay fit and be in tiptop shape for the arrival of your baby. Read more

Are You Ready for a New Perspective in Relationship Goals?
When we talk of parenthood, the role of a mother has always been given an edge over the role of a father. None of us can really deny the fact that mothers are the ones to devote more amounts of time and energy in raising a baby than the fathers too. Over the years there has been much written about how contradistinction a mother’s life changes after coming of the baby as compared to how it was before the baby. But, not many of us talk about how a father’s life changes after a baby come into the picture. So here’s a Husband and New Dad’s perspective on relationships.
How a Husband and New Dad Looks into This New Role
When we first planned on starting a family, we had a pretty clear picture that the baby was going to change the present dynamics of our marriage. But just when the romantic flirty messages changed into the grocery list, the intellectual chat changed into pee & poop talk and the birthday & anniversary reminders changed into vaccination reminders, I am still clueless. Nobody warned us about the plummeting our relationship had taken and the chaos the rest of out lives had follen into.
During the initial months everything seemed so exciting and gala, but soon after I found myself lamenting how our love for the baby had usurped our very own love story. Despite the fact that our happiness knew no bounds – she was happy and I was happy, but together our happy “we” times went missing from the picture.
And as determined as I was not to save our “us” for some day in the future, or pause our romance for tomorrow or even wait for the weekly off to hold a kiss for that matter, I also didn’t want to rush her into it either. I understood she needed time to recover & heal. But I also couldn’t shy away from the fact that her drive kept on taking a reverse gear whenever I tried to reconnect. I had been trying very badly to be the people who once met, married, fell in love and had a miraculous baby. But, our love story seemed to be lost somewhere underneath those soiled diapers and laundry piles.
How Sex and Intimacy Went Down the Drain
Who wouldn’t agree when I say that intimacy is like the glue in a marriage? So exactly how was I supposed to react if she chose sleep over sex? And even when, after a long, challenging day she tried to pry her tired and sleepy eyes open to tend to “us” because that might be our only chance during the entire day, I felt it was selfish of me to make her go through this. I did understand that “us” time would be the last thing on her mind with all the tiredness & exhaustion and over-touching from those tiny hands and feet climbing and clinging to her all day. And as much as I would hate to admit – it did feel like I was not wanted, I was not cared for, when all I had wanted was a sense of belongingness, even if the thought crossed my mind just for the millionth of a second.
How Reality Struck Hard
Did they tell you before having the baby that life will be more beautiful and lovely with the baby?
Reality check!
They sure forgot to tell you how different that love and life you probably imagined before having the baby could be when you are sleep-deprived parents to a highly active toddler. I knew beforehand, life couldn’t be the same and I was definitely geared up for this, but I so wanted more of her, I so wanted more of “us”. Reality struck me hard when one day, on hearing my wife calling, “Hey handsome” I jumped in all excited only to find that it was for the baby and not me (sigh)! He sure is my baby too and he’s handsome. But ouch! That hurt, and so much.
How I Started Looking at Our Relationship in a New Light
But amidst all that chaos we still tried to laugh while cooking or cleaning, appreciate each other, exchanged gifts, even when they didn’t seem to be enough. And just when I was beginning to think our relationship had lost its lustre, our marriage was far from being over, not even close. In all the drama going on in my life, I somehow missed seeing the bigger picture. This time around, she was the one to reach out. I’m glad I had the patience to wait and I didn’t rush her into it.
It was then I was able to witness how with each one of these challenging days passing by, we had been inching closer to each other gaining in trust, establishing mutual respect and building on faith. I had missed seeing how we kept fuelling on hope, en kindling belongingness and growing even deeper a love, all along the way, silently.
It just took me a little while to see how our relationship had metamorphosed and transformed into a more beautiful form, just as a butterfly does from a caterpillar, giving more meaning and depth to the relationship that we already had. Only my eyes were long clouded to realise how a whole new dimension of my psyche was born, as we lovers had morphed into something more. We were morphed into parents.
Our “us” today is definitely different than what it used to be, and not always a “good different,” but I love this life we’ve created and how we’ve grown as a family. And I have never been this sure how this phase of my life has shaped my personality and given me a deeper perspective on love and sacrifice.
Our relationship is definitely the most cherished aspects of my life, but the look of unconditional love that I see in those tiny eyes of my one-year-old who calls me “Papa“, and how my heart fills up with gratitude, love, and pride is beyond any word can describe and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

Q. #asktheexpert
I lost my baby after delivery due to a weak heart and heart cells issue. Everything is good in the TIFFA scan but finally we lost our baby.
Will you please tell us the correct reason and after the TIFFA scan doctor knows this issue or not. Till the 5th month ending I consulted one doctor afterwards to the delivery time and consulted another doctor.
