Home Remedies for Teeth Sensitivity to Deal with the Pain
Teeth sensitivity is something many of us suffer from. Since our teeth are super-sensitive, almost anything may cause sensitivity like not brushing teeth well, brushing teeth for too long or too many times, acidic and sour food, sweet food, teeth grinding, tooth decay, cavity, recent dental work, etc. Thus, preventing teeth sensitivity is difficult. However, there are few home remedies which can help you to deal with the dental condition.
How to Treat Sensitive Teeth at Home
Tooth sensitivity is that sharp pain which you experience when you take something very cold like ice-creams or hot like tea, coffee or something sour like tamarind or lemon. However, this condition is curable and listed below are few such home remedies for sensitivity in teeth.
1. Oil Pulling
You can try this with either coconut oil or sesame oil. This remedy helps in flushing out the Streptococcus mutans bacteria from your mouth which helps in curing teeth sensitivity. Both the oils have anti-bacterial properties and thus reduce as well as prevent plaque build-up. This remedy improves overall oral health and prevents dental problems.
How to Use It
Take a tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil (extra virgin, if possible) in your mouth.
Swirl the oil around in your mouth for a good 15-20 minutes.
Then spit it out and rinse your mouth well with warm water.
Then brush your teeth with toothpaste (preferably ones which are meant for sensitive teeth).
Make this your morning ritual before brushing your teeth every day.
2. Salt Water Rinse
Salt has anti-bacterial properties and therefore rinsing your mouth with salt mixed in lukewarm water kills the bacteria which causes sensitive teeth and also heals a toothache or sore gums which may have been caused by new dental work.
How to Use It
Rinse your mouth with lukewarm salty water.
Swirl it around your mouth, and if in case of severe pain, you can just hold it in your mouth for some time.
Spit it out and continue the same with the rest of the water in the cup.
Then, after you have finished, rinse your mouth well with plain water twice.
Do this rinse twice daily until you get the desired result.
3. Clove with Olive Oil
Cloves have anti-inflammatory as well as anti-bacterial properties. It also works as an analgesic and therefore good for toothaches and sensitive teeth.
How to Use It
Make a paste of ground cloves and olive oil or sesame oil.
Apply this paste on the affected teeth/tooth for an hour or so.
Then rinse it off with water.
In case you have clove oil, just take a little of the oil in cotton and place it on top of the tooth or you can also rinse your mouth with lukewarm water mixed with 5-6 drops of clove oil.
You may use either of the remedies twice daily until the sensitivity gets cured.
4. Guava Leaves
Guava leaves contain flavonoids, has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which gives relief in teeth sensitivity and toothache.
How to Use It
Try chewing on some tender guava leaves and then spit them out.
You may even boil few guava leaves in some water and rinse your mouth with it after it cools down.
Try either of the guava leaf remedies twice or thrice a day to get good results.
5. Garlic
Being anti-bacterial and a natural anaesthetic, Garlic reduces tooth sensitivity, toothache and any kind of infection.
How to Use It
Crush one garlic clove and mix it with a few drops of water and salt.
Apply it and leave it for some time.
Lastly, rinse your mouth with salty lukewarm water.
You may also rub half a garlic on the affected tooth/teeth for a good 10-15 minutes.
Once done, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water.
Follow either of the garlic remedies 2-3 times a day until the sensitivity or pain ceases to exist.
6. Oregano Oil
This oil has anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Thus it helps in reducing pain or sensitivity in the teeth due to the cavity or other dental problems.
How to Use It
Dab some oregano oil onto a cotton ball and apply it on the affected tooth. Keep it for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
You may even mix few drops of the oil in a cup of lukewarm water. Swirl the solution in your mouth and spit it out.
Repeat either of the remedies 2-3 times daily.
7. Hydrogen Peroxide
The anti-bacterial properties in hydrogen peroxide help in killing germs which cause cavities and other oral problems. It is also an excellent teeth whitener.
How to Use It
Mix 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide and water in equal amount.
Use this solution to wash your mouth.
Do not do this for more than 2 -3 times a week and do not swallow the solution; spit it out completely.
8. Salt and Pepper Paste
Both these ingredients are analgesic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Therefore, apply the mix of both these ingredients helps in reducing teeth sensitivity.
How to Use It
Make a paste of the salt and pepper using a few drops of water.
Then apply it on the sensitive teeth.
After about 15-20 minutes, rinse off your mouth with lukewarm water.
Repeat this remedy every day until the sensitivity in your teeth ceases to exist.
How Can You Prevent Teeth Sensitivity?
Teeth sensitivity can be quite painful and can affect your daily life. Therefore preventing it is best. Here are a few tips by which you can stop your teeth from getting sensitive.
Toothpaste which is for sensitive teeth contains potassium nitrate. This helps to block the tubules in the dentine which have been exposed due to the wearing off of the teeth enamel. However, regular and continuous use will only help.
Brushing your teeth the right way can help you to prevent sensitive teeth. Brush your teeth with soft bristles and brush gently for two minutes. However, brushing for too long may wear away the tooth enamel and cause sensitive tooth.
Consult your dentist for pain barriers that are done to prevent sensitivity in your teeth. Getting a fluoride varnish or plastic resins can help cure teeth sensitivity for some time until it does not wear out after a few months or a year.
Put a mouth guard at night or change the way you sleep if you grind your teeth at night. If you have a habit of grinding the teeth when tense or angry, be alert and conscious to stop yourself from doing so.
Try to prevent your mouth from getting dry especially when you are down with a cold and breathing through your mouth since you have blocked nostrils. Having a dry mouth causes oral infections resulting in dental problems. Drink a lot of water and avoid too much intake of coffee and tea to overcome this problem.
Rinse your mouth thoroughly with plain water after eating or drinking something. You may also use home-made mouth wash to rinse your mouth twice a day to aid oral hygiene.
Make lifestyle changes like avoiding acidic food and caffeinated beverages which may cause tooth decay and other dental problems.
If you suffer from acid reflux, consult a doctor and get it treated at the earliest since acidity erodes the enamel from your teeth and causes sensitivity.
What Foods Should You Stop Eating If You Have Food Sensitivity?
Foods which are sour, hot and cold are the primary causes behind sensitive teeth. However, avoiding the foods listed below will help you in preventing teeth sensitivity.
Fizzy, black and carbonated drinks
Ice-creams
Hot caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee
Hard candies like lollipops and lozenges
Citrus fruits like pineapple, lemons, oranges, grapefruits
Acidic food
Alcohol
Tobacco products
FAQs
Below, we answer some frequently asked questions for people whose teeth are sensitive to cold and hot beverages, sour and acidic food.
1. When to Talk to a Dentist about Teeth Sensitivity?
You should consult a dentist if you have too much sensitivity in your teeth or you experience sensitivity in any particular tooth or gum area.
2. Does Flossing Help Sensitive Teeth?
Flossing when done gently can help in removing plaque. This plaque if not removed properly can cause the teeth to rot and decay resulting in sensitive teeth. Floss once a day to remove plaque to aid oral health and prevent sensitivity.
3. Does Brushing Too Hard Cause Teeth Sensitivity?
Brushing your teeth too hard or for too long may cause the tooth enamel to erode. This exposes the dentine which connects the tooth’s nerve endings. When this is exposed and comes in contact with something cold or too hot, it causes pain.
Although sensitive teeth are a common dental problem and not a serious health hazard, it causes temporary uneasiness and pain. Therefore, try avoiding the condition by brushing and flossing your teeth gently twice a day and visit the dentist at least once a year.

Useful Tips for 5 Months Old Baby Care
Until your baby grows up to be an adult, he is going to need all the care he can get. Taking care of 20 weeks old baby might be comparatively easier than taking care of a newborn child. However, there might be certain times when things might seem formidable. With a few tips in mind, you can make sure these times can fly away as quickly as they arrive.
How to Take Care of Your 5 Month Old Baby?
Taking care of your little one can be daunting. Here are a few steps to make it easier.
1. Understanding Their Feeding and Sleeping Demands is Half the Battle Won
Around this age, your baby wants to emulate you in many ways. Watching you eat with a spoon would make him want to try that out too. You might be tempted to start solids but this is not the right age to do so. Giving a little formula milk with spoon might make him feel better. Your baby will usually be able to tell you when he’s hungry. So if you have been enforcing a strict breastfeeding schedule, you can gradually start moving away from it and feed him when he asks for it. If your baby is on formula, make sure the quantity is of the right amount and increases and decreases based on recommendations for his age.
Most mothers are used to letting their babies sleep while they breastfeed. By this age, it is good to separate both the cycles so he understands feeding times and sleeping times are different. Also, this is the age when your baby might learn to roll over. This poses another challenge since ensuring that he sleeps flat on his back is another obstacle to be overcome. You could either use pillows or just not use blankets at all and let him roll around.
2. Taking Preventive Measures Instead of Reactive Measures for Their Health
Keeping your baby healthy is always necessary and vaccination is the best way to ensure that. Immunization schedule, when followed to the letter, takes care of a ton of things right away. In case you haven’t finished the vaccines for your baby’s prior month, talk to your doctor to schedule them as soon as possible. There are specific vaccines that a mother might need to take as well.
It is good to keep the home clean and hygienic but do not overdo it. The presence of a little dirt and dust can actually help build up the immunity in your baby.
3. Your Home Needs to Be the Safest Place for Your Baby
Your baby’s curiosity should not get the better of him as he starts to explore the surroundings or crawl around the home. Baby-proofing should be done right when you know that your little one will not restrict himself to his crib. Child-protection on electrical sockets, placing hazardous chemicals on higher shelves, and so on should be taken care of. This should be an important one in your list of 5-month baby care tips.
4. Let Your Baby Start Sitting Up with Some Help
Around this age, your baby will generally be able to hold his neck pretty well. This can then be a good time to teach him to start sitting up.
Give his back enough support as he sits straight and makes use of pillows to let him be so for a longer time. Do this on the bed or on the floor with a soft mat, so that even if he does get excited and fall on his side, it won’t hurt him.
5. Introduce the Bottle’s Other Best Friend, the Cup
Just the way your baby will want to try out the spoon, another thing you can bring in his presence is a cup. This will allow him to start holding objects on his own, although he won’t be successful right away. Drinking a little water or milk from the cup will make him feel happy and a sense of achievement dawns upon him. If he’s not immediately ready for it, leave the cup around with him and let him play with it. Gradually, the comfort level will increase and he will want to try again.
6. Play with Your Little One
Your child is beginning to realize different aspects of you. Let him get to know you better as you play different games together. Keeping him entertained and making those funny faces that he loves the most is a great way to get him all happy. Start introducing colours and animals even if they just might be interesting pictures for now. His brain is taking it all in and processing it on its own accord.
Taking care of a five months old baby is not an easy task but it also isn’t as daunting as it seems. As your baby starts to get independent, you too can start building up a bond with him. Keep the communication going strong and talk to him every day. Before you know it, your little one will be sitting straight, walking around, and saying his first words to everyone’s delight.

False Pregnancy: Reasons, Signs & Diagnosis
Pregnancy can be a truly joyous occasion with the expectation of a new baby being extremely blissful. Sometimes, there are cases there are some signs of that are indicative of pregnancy, but the woman is not pregnant. While this can be a stressful situation, it is best that you understand the full implications of this condition known as pseudocyesis.
What Is False Pregnancy Or Pseudocyesis?
Pseudocyesis is the medical term for false pregnancy. In these cases, the woman will experience many symptoms that indicate pregnancy, but there is not actual foetus developing. The symptoms include a growing belly, morning sickness, irritability, back pain, etc. This condition is also known as phantom pregnancy or hysterical pregnancy.
Surprisingly, this condition also occurs in men and is known as sympathetic pregnancy. It is mostly observed when the man’s partner is pregnant.
What Are The Causes Of Pseudocyesis?
While researchers have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of pseudocyesis, there are reasons to believe that the reason could be either physical or psychological. Physical reasons could be ovarian cysts or tumours. Most evidence shows that pseudocyesis is common in women who have an intense desire to become mothers. The intensity sends a signal to the brain which makes it believe that the body is pregnant. The rest of the body receives signals and is prompted to behave as it would if it were pregnant.
Pseudocyesis occurs with many bodily systems working in tandem. The endocrine, cortical, hypothalamic, and psychological functions work together complexly. Stress on the ‘hypothamo-pituitary-adrenal’ axis is what leads to a phantom pregnancy.
Who Are At Risk Of Having False Pregnancy?
It has been observed that false pregnancies occur in certain types of cases. Women who have had the following conditions are more at risk than usual:
Multiple miscarriages
Infertility
Loss of a child
Mental breakdown
Women who want a baby with intensity are usually seen to suffer from a hysterical pregnancy.
What Are False Pregnancy Symptoms?
In such cases, women feel signs and symptoms of pregnancy or rather, what they think the symptoms of pregnancy are, which is why they believe that they are pregnant. False pregnancy signs and symptoms include:
Missed periods
Swollen belly
Weight gain
Enlarged breasts
Changes in the skin and hair
Frequent urination
Morning sickness
A feeling of foetal movement
Usually, the woman will notice a false pregnancy belly and think that she is pregnant. It is advised that pregnancy is established only after the required pregnancy tests.
What Are Its Characteristics?
The main characteristic of a phantom pregnancy is the absolute belief of the woman that she is pregnant.
Irregularity with menstruation is commonly seen in women who are suffering from a false pregnancy.
A majority of women with a phantom pregnancy will report that they feel foetal movement.
How Is False Pregnancy Diagnosed?
There are several ways in which a false pregnancy is diagnosed. Some of these include:
Blood test to establish pregnancy
Urine test to detect pregnancy
Though the previous two methods are commonly used to diagnose pregnancy, they are not a reliable false pregnancy test. An ultrasound test of the abdomen and pelvis area will have to be done to establish the pregnancy. In case of a false pregnancy, the ultrasound will not show up a heartbeat, neither will a foetus be seen.
Other conditions could be the cause of the symptoms of pregnancy such as obesity or ovarian cysts. Tests will have to be done to diagnose these conditions.
Treatment For False Pregnancy
There are two factors to consider when treating a false pregnancy. If the condition has been caused due to some physical or physiological reason, then this will be treated first. In the case of cystic ovaries, the treatment plan will include medication, lifestyle changes, and maybe even meditation.
If the false pregnancy is brought about by a psychological reason, then it will have to be treated with the help of psychiatrists and therapists.
In either case, the woman might have become invested in the idea of being pregnant. Apart from the pregnancy, she might have also prepared herself for raising a child. Once it is established that the pregnancy is false, the woman will need a lot of care. The dream of having a child is a very dear one, and having those hopes unfounded can be emotionally hard for the woman. It is best that you talk to your doctor and also with a therapist to make peace with this apparent loss.
A false pregnancy looks and feels like any other pregnancy but is in fact not a real pregnancy. There is no foetus and is caused by a number of factors. It is best that you confirm your pregnancy with ultrasound as it is the most reliable test for establishing a pregnancy. Read more

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
