Quickening in Pregnancy - What Does It Feel Like
In the early stages of the pregnancy, it gets difficult to understand the various movements you feel in the stomach. It could be your baby or it could simply be the stomach’s effort to push out the gas. But after a point, you can actually start feeling the movements of your baby and you know for sure that there is a living, breathing entity inside your body that will call you its mother soon.
What is Pregnancy Quickening?
The first time when you feel your baby’s movements and begin to realize its presence is termed as pregnancy quickening. Many mothers tend to feel it as someone tapping from within, or a vibrating sensation as if a bird is taking flight. Some babies tend to make it feel as if they are punching or kicking around inside the body.
This is generally the time when your baby begins to undertake womb-based exercises on his own. It tries to make more space for it and as you get closer to your due date, you will feel these movements even more strongly. Since this is one of the first markers that make it evident of the presence of a child, it is termed as quickening as if to refer to the quick way that the movement makes you aware of a child’s presence.
When and Where can you Feel the Baby's First Move?
While observing quickening during pregnancy signs and symptoms do vary from mother to mother. On a general basis, the first movements can be felt when the pregnancy is between 4 months to 6 months. Some mothers may experience it early, others could seem to feel it quite later.
First-time mothers take longer to realize these movements than mothers who have felt them in their previous pregnancies since these can also feel like gas rumblings. If you are slightly on the heavy side, it might take a little longer for the baby to make movements that can be evident to be noticed. Also, if the front wall of the uterus is covered with the placenta, then all those movements will be cushioned and could make it difficult to be sensed.
In the earlier stages, the lower position of the uterus makes all these movements to be sensed in the lower part of the abdomen. But as the pregnancy progresses, they can be felt higher up in the abdomen, too.
How does the First Foetal Movement Feel Like?
First-time mothers are generally quite curious to know what does quickening feel like inside the body. The movements vary from baby to baby, which is why it feels different for everyone. At times, it feels like a flutter, or a tiny body tumbling inside your stomach, or a popping and pushing sensation, and many others.
These movements are weaker in the beginning. But, over time, you could easily tell if your baby punched, or he kicked. Some babies can be karate enthusiasts and make you feel a jab as well. All of these sensations are absolutely painless.
For a long time, the only sign of the baby’s presence for a mother is usually what she sees in the ultrasound. But the feeling of an actual physical movement can bring intense happiness. You can indulge in conversations with your child when it kicks since it can hear your voice from the inside. Maybe playing its favourite music could make it move even more, and letting your partner feel it from the outside of the stomach can bring you both great joy.

The World According to Your Newborn – A Full Guide
As soon as your baby is born, it is welcomed with a brand new world, which is quite different from the one in the womb. Although the world is different, your little one is born with some senses and perception that she acquired in the womb. These help her develop a perception of the world quite early…
Your baby’s senses start developing in the womb and progress at a fast pace after her birth. The world outside helps your baby process lot of information. When your baby is born, she is born with the capability to use the senses she is gifted with.
Here are some of the senses of your baby that let her create for herself an early perception of the world:
1. Touch
Touch is the first sense your baby perceives. As soon as your baby is born, she is placed on your stomach or chest to feel you. Your baby’s sense of touch is completely developed at the time of birth. At about 10 weeks gestation your baby reaches out to touch the lining of your womb and after it is born it craves to touch and feel you. The sense of touch is a very important as your baby’s brain develops and grows through touch.
2. Sight
Unlike touch, sight is the least developed sense at birth and your baby’s vision is usually blurred. Initially your baby can see things only 20 to 25 cms from her face. At about 2 weeks she will start recognizing you, and will start smiling back at you at around 6 weeks. She will be able to respond to bright color contrasts when she comes across such images. Her sight will continue to develop and get stronger in the next 6 months of her life. By 6 months your baby will be able to see and perceive fine details and be interested in things she never bothered about before.
3. Hearing
Your baby begins to hear sound waves while still in the womb. At around 18 weeks, your baby’s sense of hearing starts developing and he can even hear your heartbeat and voices from outside. Your baby’s sense of hearing is well developed at birth and will rapidly improve in the forthcoming months. Singing and interacting with your baby through speech will help increase his sense of hearing.
4. Smell
Your baby develops the ability to smell right from your sixth month of pregnancy. When your little one is born her sense of smell is very well developed. She will be familiar with your body smell and also associate herself with the smell of breast milk. This sense of smell will draw her comfort of being close to you. You can also help your little one improve her smelling sense by putting the same blanket that you wear on her to help her identify you.
5. Taste
Your baby will develop his taste buds right in the womb when he swallows your amniotic fluid. The taste of the amniotic fluid depends on what you eat. The same continues when you breast feed your baby, as your breast milk will also taste similar to what you have eaten. The best advice to feeding mothers therefore is to introduce a variety of healthy foods into your baby’s diet.
These are the five main senses that develop before and after birth. These senses help your baby perceive the world inside and outside. Your baby will use these senses to live in the same world that you are living – and enjoy it heartily! Read more

Dealing with Sprains and Strains in Toddlers
Children with their zeal to explore are always on their toes. They run around, jump and stretch their bodies. In certain cases, stretching too hard leads to minor injuries. When a child ends up over-stretching his muscles, it causes him strain.
When children are at play, they move about and stretch their bodies. Sometimes, over-stretching a muscle can lead to a strain, while over-stretching a ligament can lead to a sprain. As parents, it is vital to be careful and essential to treat the injuries immediately. Some basic strain relief medicines and creams should be kept handy in the first-aid kit.
Bones in our body meet at joints, like knees, shoulders and elbows; it's only then that our body bends and rotates. Ligaments, which are strong elastic tissue bands, hold the bones together at these joints. Sprain happens if these ligaments are over-stretched or torn. Over-stretching may cause a mild pain, but if your child’s ligament is torn, it needs immediate medical help. Commonly, wrists, knees and ankles are found to develop sprains.
Difference between a Strain and Sprain
Though both these conditions would hurt your child in terms of the pain caused, strains don’t become too serious. This is because, strains are muscle pains, and may stay for sometime or for some hours. The affected area feels sore and can also get a little swollen. At times, it might appear to be bruised too.
On the other hand, a sprain would hurt your child right away. The injury usually looks swollen and bruised. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to move the injured area; it often feels like a broken bone.
Causes of Strains and Sprains
Strains happen when your child puts pressure on a muscle or pushes it too far, for instance, when he lifts up heavy objects. It can also happen when a child does intense activities without warming up the muscles properly. Playing some sport games or with soft-ball for the first time immediately after winters can strain your child’s calf and thigh muscles.
Sprains happen due to injuries, like having your ankle twisted. These injuries are common during sports, or when your child trips and falls.
Dealing with Sprains and Strains
Stop your child from doing any kind of activity for a while. Rest his injured body part if you feel it’s a strain or sprain. Don’t let him move the injured body part. This means that he should avoid walking with a hurt ankle or avoid using a hurt arm.
Apply cold packs to the injured body part. This helps in reducing the swelling.
Put on an elastic compression and elevate the injured part to reduce and prevent swelling.
Most of the times, it is difficult to differentiate between a sprain and fracture. It is best to consult a doctor immediately. Your child may need emergency help. You will be able to make that out from the injured area, or through the extreme expressions of pain. So, the next time your little one has strained or sprained his limb, be ready to take the necessary steps! Read more

How coparenting and technology helped us in handling our premature twins
My twins were born at 34 weeks and were in NICU for some days. When we brought them home , they were so tiny and delicate and within one week of bringing them home , India wide lockdown started.
We didn't know how we were going to handle them , although we had been waiting for the twins to come so badly, that we knew we will manage. Luckily we had my in laws with us before the lockdown. So more number of hands to manage the situation made it easy .
We had a nanny for a month to help us , but post that we were too scared to hire anyone because of corona. My babies are 8 months old and we still haven't hired anyone. We started dividing responsibilities with the babies and home . With my body recovering from the delivery stress , my husband helped me with every single household work and took care of the babies during the day & night along with his office work. What is most important during any difficult situation in life is the support system and I am so lucky to have a wonderful one. My mother in law who is a senior citizen , took the whole responsibility of kitchen along with helping me with the kids.
For other household work , we started thinking about ways to reduce the load. There was some work like utensil washing , house cleaning we knew could be made easier. We already had a fully automatic washer dryer machine which made it so easy to wash and dry pile of kids clothes.
We researched and bought dishwasher for utensils and it was a worthy investment. That left us the cleaning effort of brooming and mopping. We initially ordered a better mop - spin mop and it did make things a little easy but wasnt the solution we were looking for. After sometime , we came across automatic mop and vacuum solution and decided to spend some money on it. Again, it turned out to be a good purchase and Woohoo , regular household jobs were no longer painful.
Even without any external help , we have been able to manage everything so well with the twins. Thanks to coparenting and technology Read more
