10 Signs of a Healthy Baby that Every Parent Must Know
Babies need a lot of care and as parents, you make sure you do everything possible for maintaining your baby’s good health and overall well-being. But babies cannot talk and tell us their situation and this puts parents in a difficult situation. But if you are observant then you may notice various signs that show you that your baby is healthy and also doing well. In the following article, we shall talk about some signs that every parent must know to establish the well-being of their babies.
10 Signs that Indicate your Baby is Healthy
As a mom you are always anxious for your baby’s health but how to know if the baby is healthy. Here we have some signs of a healthy infant that you should look for in your baby:
1. If Your Baby Demands Frequent Breastfeeding
Babies are born with an innate sucking reflux, which means that as soon as you get anything close your baby’s mouth, he may begin sucking it. If your baby has a good sucking urge and asks for frequent feeds this means that your baby has a good appetite and a good digestive system. If your baby makes a gulping sound when he swallows milk, this means that he is feeding well. A baby who feels satiated may sleep post the feeding session.
2. If Your Baby Feels Calmed And Soothed By Your Presence And Voice
Your baby spends 9 months in your womb and all this while your voice had become an important part of your baby’s existence. After your baby’s birth too, he may listen and respond to your voice and this is a hint that your baby is on the right track of emotional development. If you are able to soothe your crying baby or he pays attention whenever you talk to your baby, it is evident that your baby is hale and hearty.
3. If You Are Changing 4-6 Diapers In A Day
Yes, your baby’s pee and poop also define how healthy he is. No matter whether your baby is breastfed or is on formula milk, on an average he should be wetting 4 to 6 diaper in a day. This is a clear indication that your baby is not only feeding well but he is also properly hydrated. Your baby will also show a considerable weight gain in the first few weeks after birth. However, if your baby is wetting fewer diapers in a day or not showing substantial weight gain, this means he is not feeding well. Also, darker coloured urine indicates dehydration in babies.
4. If Your Baby Is Gaining Adequate Weight And Height
Every time you take your baby to the doctor, your doctor measure your baby’s weight and height. In the first six months, your baby grows fast and on an average, your baby may gain 5 to 7 oz of weight and ½ to 1 inch of height every week. As a matter of fact, if your baby is approximately twice his birth by 5 months and thrice his birth weight by the time he is one year old, this means he is healthy. You may ask your doctor about your baby’s ideal weight and height.
5. If Your Baby Looks At You And Smiles
Your baby is able to look at you and make an eye contact by the time he is one month old, your baby may smile at you by the time he is two months old and he may giggle out loud by the time he is four months old. By the end of five months, your baby may smile back at you. As soon as you register your baby making cooing and babbling sounds, this may mean that he is all set to speak his first words. These small milestones are indicative of the fact that your baby is growing in a healthy way and he is also aware of his surroundings.
6. If Your Baby Observes Various Things Around Him
At birth, your baby’s vision is not that great and everything seems blurred to him. However, as your baby grows he observes and focuses on things around him. After birth your baby’s vision is limited to 8 to 12 inches only, however, this increases gradually and your baby starts looking and focusing on objects that are farther. Therefore, if your baby has his gaze fixed on the ceiling, he may be observing a moving fan. This is a sign that your baby is growing in a healthy manner.
7. If Your Baby Responds To New Sounds
Your baby is able to hear before birth, which means he is aware of various sounds and noises when he was in your womb. However, babies are not able to recognize sounds but as your baby starts growing he may develop a better understanding of various sounds around him. You may notice him reacting to the sound of music, television and even sound from the toys. Whenever your baby may hear a new sound you may see him react, which is a good sign of healthy development.
8. If Your Baby’s Stool Are Regular
Though it may sound a bit strange your baby’s poop is also helpful in determining how well he may be doing in terms of his health. Babies have a different frequency in passing stool, where some may poop few times a day others may poop once in few days. There is no need to feel concerned till the time your baby’s stools are normal, which means that they are soft and your baby is comfortable in passing the stool.
9. If Your Baby Sleeps Well
Sleeping is very important for the overall development of the babies and if your baby sleeps well he will grow well too. As your baby grows, his improved nervous system will help him get into various schedules and sleep is one of them. If your baby sleeps well, this means he is happy and contented and therefore, it is a sign of healthy development.
10. If Your Baby Is Able To Support His Own Weight
When your baby is one month or older, he may be able to lift his head briefly and by the time he turns three months, he may be able to lift his head for a longer time by lying on his tummy. This is a great indication that your baby has control over his muscles and thus trying to make various movements. By six months of age your baby may roll on both sides, sit with support and by the time he is one year old, he will be able to crawl, stand and walk with support. These all are indicators of a healthy baby.
Above-mentioned are some of the signs that show that your baby is doing fine. However, if you experience any developmental delays, it is suggested that you seek help from your doctor in understanding the reason and take necessary measures to cure the same.

Your 6 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Every mother feels like one only when the baby seems to accept that fact as well. And this is one of the stages when that can happen. At the 6 week mark, your baby has spent a good amount of time with you and has become accustomed to you. There’s a lot more that has gone on internally and his growth has been a lot more than before.
Your 6 Week Old Baby Development
With the passing weeks, your 6 week old baby growth spurt will be more evident now. He will be able to distinguish you from other people and form a bond of trust at the sight of your face or on hearing your sound. This is also the time when there is a higher chance of your baby actually recognizing you and smiling on seeing you. Even if that doesn’t happen, it should happen in a couple of weeks following this. Your baby will prefer to spend more time with you and make a lot of cooing sounds and noises on noticing that it is you near them.

Six Week Old Baby Milestones
By this stage, it is important to schedule a full checkup of the baby with your doctor. As the growth preceding this time duration has been tremendous, the 6 week old baby weight gain can be somewhere around a half to a full kilogram from the last time you checked. Your doctor will double-check that and ensure that the weight gain is healthy and on track. All the important joins of the body such as the legs, hips, and even the spine will be examined and heartbeat would be observed. Your doctor might ask you certain questions about the daily schedules and how certain problems are being handled. On similar lines, it is also necessary that you, as a mother, get a checkup done for yourself, too.
This stage is important since by now, the hearing capabilities of your baby would have developed completely. He will be able to perceive a lot more sounds than earlier and understand the nuances between various tones as well. You can start playing music for your child as well, something that is light and happy and calming, nothing loud or extreme. Later, you could hum back this music to your child and watch him listen intently or coo in admiration.
The facial expressions and communication start reaching new heights as your baby starts to learn how to smile and begins to use his facial muscles to make other expressions. The faces your baby makes during this stage range from adorable to hilarious. He might flutter his lips, look at you with an expression of surprise, or reflexively raise one eyebrow at a time, leading to some epic moments.

Feeding
Around this stage, a 6 weeks old baby's feeding amount undergoes a slight change. Their demands to be fed are not as frequent as before and there is a fair chance of the feeding sessions to be spread out through the day. There might a semblance of a schedule set in. Your baby might also discover that you have more than one breast, and then want to feed on the other one. This could happen even in the middle of the feed, where he suddenly goes for the other breast to continue feeding. If his hunger has increased, he could want more milk than usual and go for the other breast because of it.
For bottle-fed babies, you will notice that the formula tends to get over sooner than usual since their demand for food would have increased. At times, your child might feed slightly more than has been mentioned on the pack, or slightly less, too. That is completely fine as long as the weight gain is on track.
[Also Read: 1 Month Old Baby Food]
Sleeping
Another thing that undergoes a chance is the amount of sleep. For a 6 week old baby sleep patterns are massively different from what was before. Earlier, when your baby would sleep undisturbed for long hours, he might wake up within half an hour or so and either want to be fed, or play around. Though this might be natural, it is important to put your baby back to sleep since they need a specific amount of hours of sleep every day.
Making them used to be nursed or rocked prior to sleep could become a habit and lead them to not sleep immediately after feeding. Try inculcating the habit of sleeping in them by simply laying them down in their cradle.

Behaviour
As your baby grows drastically through the week, you might need to get new clothes for him since he’ll soon outgrow them. Some babies tend to grow more weight or less weight than others, so don’t make it a comparative exercise. As long as the weight gain falls within the healthy range, your baby is fine.
If your baby sees you now, there is a good chance he starts recognising you and shows you that with a smile. Even simple smiles can convey a lot between the both of you and help build a strong bond.
Crying
The awake times of babies around this stage seem to increase. This could, at times, lead them to cry if they are bored or they don’t get enough sleep. If a 6 week old baby sleep schedule gets disturbed, they could have trouble falling asleep again, leading them to be irritated and upset.
At times, the stimulation of toys and people could get overbearing for them. Or being by themselves for long hours could cause them to vent their frustration by crying out aloud. During such times, trying to feed them or playing around with them may not calm them down and they will continue crying. Taking your child in your arms and walking around with him, distracting him with other conversations, and cuddling him, could calm him soon and put him to sleep or stop his crying.
At times, extreme hunger or pain could also cause him to be upset and cry a lot. Figuring out the reason behind your child’s wailing can be quite a task. It is only through multiple incidents that you can start getting a hang of it and make them feel better.
6 Week Old Baby Care Tips
Feed your baby appropriately by taking into account reduced feeding if breastfed, and increased feeding if primarily bottle-fed.
Make sure your baby gets enough sleep even with the intermittent sleep cycles, and make sure to put him back to sleep if he does wake up.
Unless your baby’s crying is too loud, frequent, and lasts long, you don’t need to worry about it and can simply soothe the baby by cuddling him.
Ensure proper hygiene at all times.
With a better hearing power, listen to light music at certain times of the day and let your baby revel in it.

Tests and Vaccinations
Around the 6 week mark, two major vaccinations are scheduled to take place.
The first is the triple vaccine DPT, or diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus vaccine. This vaccination is instrumental in preventing a number of illnesses of the respiration system from occurring, including a whooping cough. The first tetanus shot is also given at this stage.
The second vaccine is the IPV polio vaccine. As a result of both the vaccines, your child might have a very light fever and even some pain and swelling in the area where the vaccine has been applied.
Games and Activities
Your baby is still too young to form words by himself. However, his visual powers have grown and he can start attempting to remember items or make similar sounds. This is where all the pamphlets that come with newspapers or old boxes of cereals or formulas even, can be quite helpful. Old comics with large pictures are great to be introduced, too. Show your child the images or colours and say their name loud and clear. Try and take simple words like “blue” or “yellow” and see if your child tries to make similar sounds by cooing or grunting. You can hang tiny objects of animals over his cradle as well.
He might also be able to stay on the tummy for a little longer than usual. You can make the best use of it by lying him down on a small sheet on the bed. As he lifts his head or tries to use his arms, gently pull the sheet towards you. This will give him an illusion of movement and make him understand that behaving in such a manner can help him move.

Consult a Doctor If
If there are signs of 6 week old baby fussy or upset, there is a chance he might be suffering from some illness.
Check his temperature. If it is more than 100.5 or so, let your doctor know about it. Do not try to administer any medication by yourself since that could be quite risky. At the same time, if your baby has reduced appetite by quite a large amount, doesn’t feel like feeding, is lethargic and generally unhappy, it is important to get him properly examined by a doctor for any serious conditions.
With nearly a month and a half spent with your baby, your bond with him will start getting stronger day by day. As your communications increase and your schedules start falling into place, you will start finding some time for yourself as well as let your child have a safe environment around him, too.

8 Genius Ideas To Make Sure Your Kids Are Physically Fit
Your child is growing up fast, and with him, his challenges are also multiplying! He now has school and homework, science projects, friendships and heartbreaks, and seemingly small milestones that are actually huge for the little human being that he is! For your darling to deal with the world around him, it is important that he possess the required physical strength and agility.
So, how can you ensure your children are physically fit? We bring you a set of 8 assorted ideas that have been scientifically proven to help kids become and remain healthy – throughout their life!
1. Encourage Them To Spend Time Outdoors – But Be Safe!
The great outdoors are indispensable to physical fitness. Spending time in natural surroundings rejigs your child’s immunity, infuses new vigour, and also brings him peace. However, this is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to allow as the outdoors can also be dangerous. What if your kids wander off to dangerous places, or worse, are hurt or abducted? Well, the good news is that you can now quit worrying about this. Get your kids to wear the FindMe watch by ePurpleSky.com which has an inbuilt GPS tracker and a calling mechanism. You will know where your child is all the time, down to the exact building address. Problem solved!
Check out more parenting tips to keep kids safe from danger
2. Help Them Deal With Stress and Academic Issues
The biggest roadblock between kids and fitness is anxiety. They have a lot to deal with at this age – academic stress, peer pressure, making friends, understanding new emotions such as competitive spirit and jealousy, etc. This stress can often bog them down and interfere with their wellness. Observe them closely to delineate signs of stress and talk to them about it. Understanding and conversation can usually solve any problem when it’s Mamma who does it! ||
3. Show Them The Right Posture For Sitting, Standing and Walking
A lot of kids today develop poor posture from a young age. This eventually makes them prone to backbone disorders and other stress related ailments. If your child stoops while sitting or standing, and walks with a limp or doesn’t maintain a straight line, this can indicate early problems with physical fitness. Consult a paediatrician and help your child overcome this.
4. Make Sure They Walk Every Day
Walking is the best, and also the easiest, form of exercise. Your kids don’t need to chalk out time for this separately. If they take a rickshaw to the tuition centre a few blocks away, you can ask them to walk instead. Walking can also be a part of their play-time in the evening. The trick here is to make this an exciting challenge – something you can do with a pedometer! The FindMe Kids Watch, for example, records the number of steps they take and can be a really cool motivator!
5. Monitor Their BMI and Other Vital Statistics
Sometimes, even a seemingly fit child could be harbouring a physical fitness problem. To be sure, you need to monitor your child’s Body Mass Index (or BMI) and figures such as bone weight and height growth with time. Your doctor will be able to tell you if there is an underlying problem and suggest corrective measures like exercises or dietary supplements.
6. Include These Items in their Daily Diet
To be physically active, your children have to consume a wholesome, balanced diet. Make sure the food they consume every day has a fair share of all these nutrients – carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibre. In the absence of adequate nutrition, your efforts at physical fitness cannot succeed! Check out this nutrition guide for kids to find out if your child has a nutritional deficiency and how you can fix it.
7. Participate in These Fun Exercises with Them
Who said exercise has to be boring and dull? For your kids to be fit, they need to exercise their growing muscles and bones. This also improves their hand eye coordination and, if they exercise with a group, their social skills. Make exercises like swimming, skipping, gym-bars and running a daily routine for both you and your kids. We foresee a lot of bonding too!
8. Keep Them Away from Electronic Gadgets
Finally, remember this - spending too much time fiddling with gadgets or staring into screens has been proven to weaken kids’ eyesight and lead to obesity and attention-deficit disorders. If you want your children to have an active lifestyle, limit their screen time to a maximum of an hour or two everyday – and this includes everything from the mobile phone to the television!
Before you start working toward any of the above, keep in mind that you are your child’s role model. For maximum effect, you need to incorporate these pointers in your daily life as well and the kids will follow suit. Come on moms, it’s time to get fitter by the minute! Read more

Your Two Year Old Toddler on a Tricycle
Have you been wondering at what age can a child pedal a tricycle? If he has touched the two-year mark, it's a safe age for him to pedal. Teaching your toddler to pedal a tricycle will only take a day. Allowing him to practice and become steady is necessary.
You need to have patience with your toddler when teaching him to pedal a tricycle. There are techniques and tricks you can employ to make the learning process easy. Try not to run out of patience. Here are some effective tips on teaching your toddler to pedal a tricycle.
Handy Tips for a Toddler Learning to Ride a Tricycle
1. The Initiation
The first step involves getting your little one a small tricycle. Ensure that the seat is comfortable. A good seat will prop him up to allow him to hold the handlebars. His feet should also be able to touch the pedals. In order for your toddler to really get the tricycle going, ensure that his knees are bent at the full extension point.
2. Safety
Safety is of utmost importance. Before your toddler starts to learn to ride a tricycle, ensure that his head is fitted with a helmet that is strapped on securely. Make it mandatory for him to wear a helmet before he rides a tricycle or a bicycle.
3. Position
In order to ensure your toddler’s safety, ensure that the tricycle is positioned in a safe zone. This will make the pedalling lessons go off without having to worry about your little one falling. A location with lots of grass(hint: the garden) that comes with a slight downward slope is perfect for that initial ‘push’.
4. Balance
Your little one will have to get his balance right to master the tricycle. His rear should be firmly planted on the tricycle seat with his hands firmly on the handlebars and feet on the pedals. These precautions will pave the way for a successful tricycle lesson.
5. The Push
You have to be the one that gives your toddler his first push on the tricycle. Keep reminding him to keep his hands on the bar and feet on the pedal. If his feet come off the pedal, stop the lesson and ask him to reposition them. You can then continue to push your toddler down the slope while urging him to start pedalling. If things go right, he will be smiling with glee for accomplishing the feat.
6. Persistence
Don't stop the pedalling lessons. Continue working with your toddler to ensure he gains experience with pedalling. The process will not be easy. It will probably be a few months before he is motivated to pedal without assistance. So, when can a toddler ride a tricycle? When he is confident.
If you stick to the plan, your little one should soon become adept at putting the pedal to the metal. There will be a few bumps and bruises along the way, but, aren't those a part of every learning process? Remember; when you're teaching a toddler to ride a tricycle don't ever forget to keep a close watch on the child. Read more
