Ultrasound Scans During Pregnancy - Types, How to Prepare and More
An ultrasound scan sends high-frequency sound waves to the uterus during pregnancy to capture the image of the foetus. Images in ultrasound scans reveal the developmental phases of the body, often revealing bones and tissues through shades of white and grey.
What is an Ultrasound Scan?
An ultrasound scan is used to get a sneak peek of your baby and analyse how the foetus is faring inside the womb. It's primarily used to detect signs of abnormalities and monitor the growth of the foetus. However, the gender of the baby is not revealed through an ultrasound scan in India, as it is considered illegal. Nowadays, 4D and 3D colour scans are popular ultrasound choices during pregnancy for revealing high-quality images of babies.
Are There Any Risks or Side-Effects of Ultrasounds During Pregnancy?
For over 40 years, ultrasound scans have been used during pregnancies with no known side-effects. It is safe, and forms an essential part of ensuring your baby is developing well in the womb.
When and Why You Need a Sonography in Pregnancy
You need a sonography (ultrasound scan) during pregnancy to confirm if the fertilised egg has implanted in the placenta. Here are a few reasons why you need it-
To prevent ectopic pregnancies
To prevent pregnancy complications like molar pregnancies and miscarriage
To check whether or not you're pregnant
To assess the growth and development of the foetus
To scan for birth defects and genetic abnormalities
As part of other prenatal tests such as Chorionic Villus Sampling
During the First Trimester
During the first trimester of your pregnancy, you will
Go through a viability scan and dating scan during the first six weeks, which will be followed up by an NT scan between nine and eleven weeks.
Discover your due date through an ultrasound scan.
Listen to your baby's heartbeat for the first time in six weeks.
Check how many babies are in your womb and confirm if they are in the right position in the uterus.
Check for signs of spotting or excessive bleeding through images produced from the above scans.
During the Second Trimester
During the second trimester, you will
Know the baby's gender (not applicable to India).
Assess the foetus' growth and position inside the womb.
Scan for congenital abnormalities and birth defects.
Learn whether your baby has Down Syndrome.
During the Third Trimester
A trans vaginal scan is usually avoided in the 3rd trimester, but it may be recommended by your doctor in case of any medical issues. During a regular ultrasound scan in the 3rd trimester, you will
Review any anomalies or changes in the anatomy of the baby.
Review the position of the baby.
Check whether the baby is growing well according to medical diagnostic reports.
How to Prepare for an Ultrasound Scan During Pregnancy
Before you prepare for an ultrasound scan for pregnancy, your bladder will need to be full in order to clearly scan for a high-quality image of the foetus. Make sure you drink two to three-ounce glasses of water, one hour before your scheduled ultrasound scan comes up.
Remember to have a full bladder during your appointment and do not urinate before the scan, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy.
How is an Ultrasound Done During Pregnancy?
The ultrasound scan is a very simple procedure for first-timers. You basically lie down on the examination table and the technician applies a special gel on your abdomen and pelvic area. This gel improves contact between the womb and the transducer so that waves travel properly through your belly. The transducer, which looks like a small wand, is finally placed on your belly, and as it moves, black and white images are captured on the screen. You may be asked to move or hold your breath during this process.
Once the scan is satisfactory and the images are captured well, the gel is removed from your abdomen, and you will then be allowed to urinate or empty your bladder.
Does a Sonography Hurt?
Under normal circumstances, a sonography doesn't hurt. However, if you have any pelvic injuries or existing abdominal pain, the pressure exerted by the transducer during the ultrasound might hurt or be a bit painful.
Different Types of Ultrasounds Offered in Pregnancy
There are different types of ultrasounds offered during pregnancy. They are
Transvaginal Ultrasound - A probe is inserted into your vagina and used to capture clear images. This is used during the early stages of pregnancy.
3-D Ultrasound - A more detailed ultrasound scan that displays the width, height, and depth of the fetus and its organs in images. A special probe and software are used, and it is only available in certain hospitals.
4-D Ultrasound - Also known as a 'Dynamic 3-D Ultrasound,' this scan creates an animated video of the fetus. This motion video captures multiple images of the baby's facial expressions, movements and even shows the highlights and shadows. However, it requires special equipment.
Fetal Echocardiography- This is used for diagnosing heart problems in the foetus and takes a longer amount of time to complete. It is similar to a traditional pregnancy ultrasound.
Transabdominal Ultrasound - Sends waves through your lower abdomen using a transducer and a special gel. Images are captured in shades of black and white to depict foetal growth and abnormalities.
Doppler Ultrasound - A type of ultrasound that's used to assess the blood flow to the heart and other major vessels, both in the baby and the mother.
Dating and Viability Scan - Used to confirm pregnancy status in women during the first six to nine weeks.
Some Points to Keep in Mind
Ultrasounds are a requirement to judge the health and development of the baby, so don’t miss out on any scheduled appointments.
Ultrasounds should only be carried out by a trained professional who has the ability to interpret and analyse the images.
If your doctor notices any abnormalities during the ultrasound or wishes to conduct further tests for a clearer look, you may be recommended other procedures.
It may be hard for you to identify certain organs during the ultrasound, so you can ask your doctor to point them out.
The ultrasound shouldn’t hurt during normal circumstances, so make sure to immediately let your doctor know if you feel any pain.
Wear clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen.
Make sure to drink plenty of water to prepare for the ultrasound. This helps you finish the scan quicker and also get a better picture.
FAQs
Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions with regards to an ultrasound scan during pregnancy.
1. Is There Any Problem if the Ultrasound is Performed At Six to Seven Weeks and a Heartbeat is Not Detected?
No. Hearing no heartbeat is normal during the early stages of pregnancy, as long as the foetus is shown to be developing.
2. Are Ultrasound Scans Accurate in Calculating Gestational Age?
An ultrasound scan is accurate in calculating the gestational age of the baby only during the early weeks of pregnancy and not later on.
3. Why Do Some Gynaecologists Schedule Ultrasound Scans Differently?
Some gynaecologists schedule ultrasound scans differently, based on the foetus' growth and condition during pregnancy. Routine ultrasound scans are done as part of the prenatal testing procedure.
4. Are Ultrasound Scans Accurate in Determining the Conception Date?
Any calculations that are done for determining the conception date after an ultrasound are only estimates and not truly accurate. The due date depends on the average length and regularity of a woman's menstrual cycle.
5. Are Ultrasounds a Significant Part of Prenatal Care?
Yes. Ultrasound scans are used at different stages of prenatal care.
Getting a sonogram in pregnancy is not only sound, but effective too. Ultrasound scans are a necessity to find out whether or not you're pregnant. If you are, they are used for tracking changes and growth of the fetus. Consult your doctor regarding which type to go for during pregnancy, based on your medical condition and comfort levels.

Progesterone after IUI - Importance and Possible Side Effects
In most cases, women trying to get pregnant are given progesterone supplements after IUI to promote better embryo implantation thereby improving their odds of getting pregnant. There are several ways to take progesterone such as oral, vaginal or via intramuscular injections. Progesterone supplement is available in oil solutions or capsule pill. However, taking progesterone can have certain side effects. Every woman is different. Therefore, the effect of progesterone also varies from individual to individual. Mostly the side effects are similar to the symptoms of early pregnancy.
What are Progesterone Supplements?
The hormone progesterone is naturally produced by the ovaries to prepare the uterus for implantation and to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Progesterone supplements are hormone medicines that resemble the hormone progesterone’s composition. They can enhance the receptivity of the endometrial lining of the uterus. By this means they can increase the likelihood of implantation of the embryo in the uterine wall. Furthermore, they support the pregnancy in the early developing stages till the placenta starts producing adequate amounts of the hormone progesterone which usually happens around 7th to 9th weeks of gestation.
Doctors commonly propose progesterone supplements in cases where women have issues producing progesterone or are undergoing intrauterine insemination or IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).
Why are Progesterone Supplements Recommended after IUI?
IUI is a process that involves placing of treated sperm right into the uterus which allows it easy access to the egg and increases the chances of it binding with the egg. After an IUI attempt, taking progesterone supplements can heighten the possibility of conception as they help in making the uterus more receptive for the embedding of the embryo. They also the mimic the signal of hormone progesterone released by the ovaries that stop menstruation to let the pregnancy develop. Scientific evidence submits that progesterone after IUI success can lengthen uterine lining’s lifespan which is likely to give an egg added time to implant itself thus promoting pregnancy.
How is Progesterone Given and Which Route of Administration is Best?
Doctors can administer progesterone after intrauterine insemination orally, through the vagina or by injection. Vaginal administration is more likely to reach the maximum tissue levels of progesterone. Therefore most doctors prefer prescribing vaginal suppositories or tablets after IUI. Progesterone taken orally can have more side effects and may not be as effective vaginal application methods. Progesterone given by intramuscular injections tends to be very effective as well.
Most women may like to know when to start progesterone after IUI. The answer is that the doctor depending upon the particular case at hand may be the best judge to decide about the method and medication to be given to the patient.
Are There any Risks and Side Effects of Progesterone Supplements after IUI?
Certain side effects of progesterone supplements after IUI can be:
1. Breast Enlargement
Progesterone tends to stimulate the development of breast’s glandular tissues causing them to swell and grow. Some patients also experience breast tenderness owing to enlargement of breasts. Increase in progesterone during pregnancy also results in expansion of breast size.
2. Gastrointestinal Distress
Progesterone supplements can negatively impact the gastrointestinal system triggering constipation, bloating, nausea, vomiting. The upsurge in progesterone levels during pregnancy normally affects the stomach and bowels of most women.
3. Psychological Effect
Taking progesterone supplements after IUI can produce some psychological effects like headaches, mood swings. Progesterone can bind with different brain receptors to generate such effects. They can also cast a sedating effect inducing excessive sleep.
4. Skin Reactions
In some cases, when patients were given progesterone by intramuscular injection, skin reactions occurred. Skin is prone to erupt into bumps, rashes and redness at the spot of injection. Also, most likely the injection is injected into a patient’s rear which may cause some pain and at times an allergic reaction.
5. Leakage
Progesterone supplements taken via vaginal suppositories, gels and inserts, although painless and more effective, can result in leakage of the medicines from the vagina which may be very messy and uncomfortable for the patient. The patient may have to resort to the frequent cleaning of the discharge. In some instances, patients have also reported a negative response to the carrier which contained the progesterone.
Progesterone after IUI may be essential as it helps build the uterine lining making it favourable for implantation of the embryo. However, it is best to get yourself tested to establish if the progesterone levels are low. In case your body is making enough you may not require supplements. In any case, seek your doctor's advice on the necessary course of action.

When Can a Pregnant Woman Use Evening Primrose Oil?
There is no exact time to start using the oil during pregnancy; but if a woman wants to use it during pregnancy, she can use it in her first and second trimesters. However, it should be used only after consulting with a doctor, better yet under medical supervision.

As evening primrose oil is a blood thinner, it can lead to complications during labour and delivery. Hence, it should be avoided if a woman has had or is going for a C-Section.
If used excessively, evening primrose oil can cause severe abdominal cramps.

14 White Lies All Moms Have Told Their Kids
Psst, let's tell you a secret – all moms lie to their children. What? Well, yes, strange as it seems, some little white lies are a part and parcel of parenting. So, which are the most common lies told to children?
Whether it is to tame an unceasing toddler tantrum, or tuck your naughty preschooler in bed, all moms need to resort to stories at some point. While some of these stories are real, some could also be make-believe (read: lies!). But they are essential parts of parenting and often the most potent weapons to protect our mental sanity!
Check out these funny lies parents tell their kids, and the next time you're in a soup, feel free to try them out! They are harmless, innocent, and when your child is older, quite fun to have a shared laugh over.
1. Don't lie to me. I always know when you're lying.
2. This injection won’t hurt. I promise!
3. If you make ugly faces, that's how your face will freeze forever.
Doesn't the rule apply to you, Mamma? We are talking about that time when you scream "who messed the floor again?" with a rolling pin in your hand!
4. I think the cat stole the rest of your chocolates and cookies.
...and left the tempting fish intact. Last time we checked, cats weren't particularly fond of chocolates but you never know, tastes change.
5. Santa won't give you an Xmas present if you're naughty.
Um, it's more likely that Santa will be tucked near the fireplace in his North Pole house, oblivious to who is being a good boy or girl.
6. The shop doesn't keep batteries for that toy anymore.
You mean that particularly irritating toy with the never-ending, blood curdling noise? Yep, they don't keep batteries anymore for that one.
7. I can't figure out how to switch on the TV. The remote is lost.
Isn't this one a particularly funny lie to tell kids? Mom is really scatter-brained at times. Perfectly understandable. Even more so after the TV has aired screeching cartoons for two hours non-stop.
8. That isn't a vegetable. It's just chicken. Or paneer.
Of course... It's a kind of chicken that's stuffed with appetising vegetables like radish, spinach and broccoli.
9. We are leaving you alone if you don't get ready now.
Haha! Like you ever would! You can try this one safely only for a very limited time after which kids rise to the occasion. But you know when you're planning a dinner date with hubby and actually will leave them alone with a caregiver? That's when all hell breaks loose.
10. That isn't Coke. It's just black water - totally tasteless.
11. The Tooth Fairy will give you a big prize for not crying about your bad tooth.
Toothaches are terrible. But all is forgiven when the Tooth Fairy leaves a prize outside the door.
12. If you don't finish your veggies, you will never be even half as tall as Daddy.
Well, at least this one isn't completely a lie. Moms report that growing taller is huge motivation for kids!
13. I never did anything wrong when I was your age.
Yes, we parents were all angels who never bugged their parents. Our parents, of course, may have an alternate opinion on this.
14. I don't know.
Finally, after hours of answering your child's questions, you resort to the comfort of this beautiful lie. Of course you know. But you're too tired to answer.
Are you guilty of any of the above lies parents tell their children? How about more than just one? Some of these are age old; while you may have used them yourself, you might have also thought to yourself while reading them - 'These are also lies my parents told me!' Well, trust us when we say these lies are the lifeline for many parents around the world! These lies and more like them help keep you sane when your child is doing everything he can to drive you crazy. A sane parent, after all, is a good parent, right? Read more

13 Reasons Why You Should Consider Switching to Menstrual Cups and Ditching The Pads
Want to make your life easier...and cheaper? We'll give you the lowdown on menstrual cups. Wait...before you say no, read these 13 reasons why you should switch to menstrual cups!
What if we told you a way to make your period days cheaper, safer, and a whole lot better? Many moms are switching over to menstrual cups on their period and not many want to go back to pads and tampons ever again! What is a menstrual cup? It is a feminine hygiene product that is made of super-flexible silicone that you basically insert into your vagina, like you do with tampons. It is built to collect menstrual fluid. Basically instead of absorbing period blood, it collects it till you have to change it.
If you aren't sure what this feels like, check out this Vlogger's first time using a menstrual cup to know exactly what it feels like down there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Azv9r2e97xo
Here's why you should try using a menstrual cup.
1. One Menstrual Cup Lasts FOREVER
Well, with proper care they can last up to 10 years! But that's a whole decade of your period sorted.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
2. This Obviously Means You'll Save Money
Most menstrual cups cost between INR 400 – 600. That's an amazing deal even if it lasts you half of a decade, don't you think? Definitely only a fraction of the cost of sanitary pads and tampons.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="510"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
3. You Won't Have To Empty It for Upto 12 Hours
Most pads or tampons need to be changed every 5-7 hours depending on your flow. Menstrual cups give you about 5 extra hours between emptying.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
4. Less Visits to the Chemist
Your chemist visits become an annual trip if you wish to change your cup annually. Of course, if you want to pick up other fun supplies, you will go more often than that. Because we all know how absurd period cravings can be!
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="509"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
5. It Holds More Liquid
A menstrual cup holds five times the amount of period blood than a tampon does, and definitely more than a pad too. This is a blessing for women with heavier flow!
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="452"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
6. No Chemicals Going Up There
No BPA, no latex, no chemicals and no dye or other horrible additives in your vajayjay! Tampons might contain bleached rayon, which is a carcinogenic substance. And even if it wasn't, the idea of getting bleach up there is horrific, right? We all know how much it burns our faces! Sanitary pads aren't so innocent either, although, we will admit they are less invasive.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="565"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
7. Lesser Leaking
Once you learn to insert the cup properly, it forms a suction. This means that all the liquid is sealed inside the cup till you have to remove it. Only after the recommended time will the cup become heavy and may shift, causing leaks. The claim is that a menstrual cup needn't be emptied for up to 12 hours so if you time it right, you won't have to keep checking uncomrfortably for stains everytime you get off your chair.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
8. We Know You've Had a Child...
Menstrual cups come in two sizes, so mums are loving them all the more! There's a larger size for right after childbirth; no more changing 10 pads a day!
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="245"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
9. Sleep Better
Whether it’s your second period night where you are almost sure you are going to stain your sheets (so you put a towel on the bed) or no, the menstrual cup will last way longer than anything else. Since they go up to 12 hours, you can sleep comfortably knowing that you are sorted for the night. No more bumping your toes on bed edges in the night whilst searching for your pads.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="696"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
10. Do You Know What TSS is? Well you won't have to worry about it...
Toxic Shock Syndrome is a bacterial condition that can actually be fatal. If your tampon absorbs more than your flow, you risk tiny bits of cotton shredding and sticking to your vaginal walls. Sounds scary, no? It is! It is the perfect breeding place for bacteria! You are totally immune to this risk if you use menstrual cups.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
11. Mess Free Sex on your Period!!
YES! If you wear tampons, you probably feel a bit “dry” in there, right? This is because the cotton in the tampons can strip your vaginal walls of their natural wetness. When you are sexually aroused, tampons could absorb all your natural lubrication and make the ride a little uncomfortable. Menstrual cups claim to make way for a smooth ride! You'll just have to test that claim for yourself.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="245"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
12. No More Chaffing
Yep, no more stealing your baby's diaper rash cream or squeezing out that tube of Vaseline to combat pad rashes anymore. No pads equal no rashes. Hurray! Also, there's no more dampness when you sit or walk. Yay for no squishy feelings in your panties.
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
13. You'll Understand Your Body Better
Since the cup collects all of your period blood, you'll be able to figure out just how unique your cycle is. You'll get to know the exact quantity and what your flow is like in detail. You'll be thanking us the next time your gynac asks you all of those confusing questions about your period! You're welcome!
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
We're on board for trying out menstrual cups for two main reasons -Less Expensive and Eco- Friendly! Especially after the GST on Sanitary Pads hit us in the nether regions! However, these cups may not be everyone's cup of tea. I mean, you could have had a baby come out of your hoo-ha but you'd rather not insert a squiggly silicone cup in there, right?
