Indian Foods That Can Be Harmful During Pregnancy
Whatever you put into your mouth during pregnancy will be shared with your baby too. So it is important that you make healthy choices. What is good for you may not be exactly for that tiny one growing inside your womb. So make wise choices; avoid these foods during pregnancy and keep your baby safe.
1. Raw Papaya
You already know this that papaya should be avoided during pregnancy, but do you know why that is? Raw papaya or unripe papaya or semi-ripe papaya is not safe to consume during pregnancy. Green papaya contains latex in high concentration, which can be particularly harmful as it can lead to uterine contractions, which could even lead to a miscarriage. It also contains papain and pepsin, which impact the development of the foetus leading to many birth defects.
2. Tulsi Leaves
Yes, Tulsi leaves are not safe for consumption during pregnancy. We often eat Tulsi leaves when suffering from a cold or a cough. But Tulsi leaves have mercury in them, which can harm the baby and trigger contractions.
3. Aloe Vera and Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe vera is known for curing skin problems can actually be harmful during pregnancy. Aloe vera not just affects the uterus and trigger contractions, but also reduces the sugar levels in the body. It is not beneficial for the foetus as well. At the same time, aloe vera could also trigger reactions such as vomiting and diarrhoea, which can cause an imbalance in the electrolyte levels of the body.
4. Asafoetida
Asafoetida, which is known as 'hing' in Hindi is a common ingredient used in Indian cuisine. We use it in curry, dals and many vegetables. It enhances the taste of any dish. But it is not recommended during pregnancy. Hing increases the internal body heat and elevates the temperature to provide energy. This does not bode well for the foetus as it requires the temperature to be optimal for continued development. So, it's best avoided during pregnancy!
5. Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek, known as methi dana in Hindi forms a core part of a woman’s diet once she delivers her baby as it stimulates the production of milk. But if consumed during pregnancy, fenugreek seeds can have adverse effects on the health of the mother and the baby. Fenugreek seeds contain phytoestrogens, which enter the body and trigger the menstrual cycle as well as regulate the hormones. It could lead to early contractions to set in and cause a miscarriage.
6. Pineapple
Some women tend to have pineapple as their due date approaches, which is fine as long as they have consulted their doctor about the same. But eating pineapple in the first trimester of pregnancy is a strict 'no'. Pineapple contain bromelain enzyme, which softens the cervix and helps induce labour. Thus it may lead to unwanted contractions and lead to a miscarriage.
7. Raw Eggs
Eggs are a versatile food and without a doubt taste delicious. But can you enjoy them during pregnancy? Yes, you can but not in all forms! You can eat boiled eggs if you like, they are safe to include in your pregnancy diet. But you should never consume them raw. Raw eggs are used in various food preparations as well such as mousse, mayonnaise, various desserts, and sauces. Raw eggs have a high risk of containing the salmonella virus, which is well-known to cause multiple pregnancy complications. So, you should avoid eating them raw!
8. Salty Foods
Salty and spicy foods taste yummy. You might crave for them and satiate your hunger and taste buds, but it is highly recommended to avoid foods that are high in salt. These include your favourites such as samosas and pakoras and even the usual potato wafers. High salt can leave you with high water retention and cause a host of issues. So avoid these too!
9. Street Food
Yes, we know it is a piece of sad news for you, but if you want to keep your baby happy and safe, avoid eating street food. For a while, forget about delicious chaat and Chinese food. Yes, you will crave for these foods, more so in pregnancy, because street vendors don't usually adhere to the standard hygienic procedure while preparing food. Thus eating street food during pregnancy may put you and your baby at the risk of infections and diseases. You may have an upset stomach or indigestion, which can cause discomfort. Street food is also spicy which is why you should avoid it. Consuming spicy food can cause heartburn and a burning feeling in your stomach. So avoid eating it as much as possible.
10. Seafood
Sushi might be one of your favourite foods, but scratch that off your list of favourite foods while you are pregnant. Raw meat of any kind, and especially fish, is extremely unhealthy as the raw meat may have parasites and other microbes in them. Eating cooked fish curry or fried fish should also be avoided. Yes, fish do have a number of important nutrients that a woman needs during pregnancy but stop yourself from eating it. The problem is not with the fish but with water. The water tends to have a large number of pollutants, including mercury, which is consumed by the fish. This inevitably can find a way into your body and can cause multiple problems. Certain varieties such as shrimp, salmon, and catfish, are generally considered safe for consumption by pregnant women but you should confirm with your doctor first before making them a part of your diet.
11. Fennel Seeds
Fennel seeds are known to have traces of phytoestrogens in them which act like female estrogen and are known to stimulate uterine contractions. Fennel seeds, just like fenugreek seeds, are given to women post-delivery as they stimulate the production of milk and cleanse the uterus. These seeds can be consumed in pregnancy in small amounts, after consulting with the doctor. But for a healthy pregnancy, these are best avoided.
Not being able to eat what you crave for will obviously make you sad, but remember you are doing it for you and your baby. These are some Indian foods that should not be eaten during pregnancy, but there are lot of other food items that are recommended during pregnancy and are tasty too. So enjoy them! Focus on staying healthy and keeping your baby safe and you will have a healthy baby!

How to Deal with Dandruff in Kids
Dandruff is a common issue among kids that causes irritation and itching on the scalp. Kids generally play outdoors, making them more susceptible to dust and thus dandruff.
What is Dandruff?
The small pieces of dead skin that are found in a person's hair, which normally results in white flakes or even itchiness, is called dandruff. But in some rare cases, serious conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis may occur, in which inflammation of the scalp area happens.
Causes of Dandruff in Children
Various causes of dandruff issues in kids include-
1. Improper shampooing
Sometimes when we shampoo our kids’ hair, dead skin cells which should have got rinsed, stay back due to improper washing of the head. This causes accumulation of dead skin on our scalp, leading to dandruff.
2. Malnutrition
Malnutrition in kids is the most common reason for dandruff. Kids prefer to eat more unhealthy snacks or junk food rather than a fully nutritious diet, leading to scalp itching or dandruff.
3. Sensitivity to Hair Products
Sometimes, the hair product you use may not suit your kid well, leading to dandruff issues. Try to change the product, but prefer to do so only after consulting a doctor.
4. Malassezia
It is a yeast-like fungus, which, when growing rapidly, leads to disturbance in the natural growth of cells; this, in turn, leads to dandruff and scalp itching. Certain illnesses or hormonal changes in kids generally is the cause of the emergence of such fungi.
5. Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
This disease is also known as eczema, which results in inflammation of the skin. This type of skin disorder does not go away that easily, but dandruff is a milder form of this condition in children, with less serious implications.
Dandruff Signs and Symptoms in Children
Various signs and symptoms that must be noticed in children, so that effective measures can be undertaken for dandruff treatment, include:
Visible dry white flakes on your child’s scalp or outfits
Presence of oily flakes in the scalp area
Continuous itching of the scalp area
Red patches on the scalp either caused due to itching or excessive dandruff
Can Dandruff Harm Child’s Scalp?
In most cases, mild dandruff is what irritates your child, and it doesn't affect the scalp area much. But in certain rare cases, like seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, Malassezia or psoriasis, the scalp area gets inflamed and turns red. In such cases, it becomes essential to consult a skincare specialist for effective relief for your kids.
Dandruff Treatment for Kids
Tested and tried dandruff treatments for kids include-
1. Use a Medicated Shampoo
Use of medicated shampoo can treat dandruff in kids to a great extent. Just do not go with any shampoo; rather, consult a skincare specialist who will recommend an effective medicated shampoo based on your kid’s situation.
2. Stay Hydrated
Tell your kids to drink as much water they can. If they do not drink by themselves, give them water in measured quantities so that they drink water or even juice regularly. Keeping them hydrated can definitely reduce dandruff.
3. Brushing Before Shampooing
Brush your kids’ hair properly before rinsing them with the medicated shampoo. Brushing will help elimination of flakes to some extent, which in turn will help better cleaning of the scalp after shampooing.
4. Separate Combs and Towels
Maintain separate combs and towels for your kids as germs on common towels and combs may boost more of dandruff issues.
5. Proper Nutrition
Green and leafy vegetables are a must for children dealing with dandruff issues. Proteins, carbohydrates and the other required nutrients lead to moist and healthy skin, which in turn reduces or completely removes dandruff.
6. Oiling of the Scalp
Oil your kid’s scalp regularly or even on alternate days, as this will help keep the scalp moist, and thus make it dandruff-free.
7. Do Not Apply Any Harmful Hair Products
Kids are most susceptible to skin problems, and for the same reason, hair gels or creams should not be applied to kids’ hair as it may lead to dandruff or other hair related issues.
8. Frequent Shampooing
Shampoo your kids' hair on alternate days. Frequent shampooing helps keep away dust, which is the main cause of dandruff in kids; shampooing every day, however, is not recommended.
Home Remedies for Child Dandruff
Home remedies for treating dandruff in kids include-
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda acts as an incredible scrub that helps exfoliate the scalp. You just need to add a bit of baking soda to your regular shampoo and apply it normally on the scalp before rinsing it thoroughly.
2. Tree Oil
Tree oil has anti-fungal properties, which helps in soothing a dry scalp. Mix a few drops of tree oil with almond or olive oil. Mix the oils thoroughly and apply on the scalp with the help of cotton. Keep it on for half an hour and then rinse your scalp thoroughly.
3. Curd
Curd helps to keep your scalp moist and soft. Apply curd on the scalp and keep it for ½ hour, before washing it off.
4. Lemon
Lemon contains Vitamin C that helps in treating scalp issues such as dandruff. Apply lemon with a cotton ball, and keep it for ½ hour before washing.
5. Neem
Neem is also effective in treating dandruff. Mix coconut oil with neem juice and massage properly on the scalp.
6. Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek seeds have anti-fungal and scalp soothing properties. Make a paste of grounded fenugreek seeds and curd and apply it on the scalp before shampooing.

12. Garlic
One needs to overlook garlic’s bad odour, but rather focus on its anti-fungal properties. Mix grounded cloves in water and apply it on your kids’ scalp, before shampooing.
13. Butter
Take an ample amount of butter and rub it on hair. Keep the butter for one hour. Then wash it off with plain water. It dissolves dandruff and eliminates most of the flakiness.
14. Amla/Indian Gooseberry
Amla can be dried and turned into a paste which can be applied to the scalp. It helps eliminate dandruff efficiently.

A Family Member’s Very Common Mistake Damaged This Baby’s Eyes Forever
You are a mom. You protect your baby with your life and don’t let him come to any harm. The doors and windows of your house are shut to anything that can be dangerous to your child – from bad weather to negative people to microbes! But what if the threat to your baby comes not from outside but from his own family members? A very common mistake on your part, made unknowingly, can ruin your baby’s health forever. This true story of what happened to a newborn baby in China will force you to be ten times more careful in the future!
Their baby was still very young. He had not even met his entire extended family yet. That afternoon, his parents decided to introduce their infant to his other family members. After all, everyone was very excited to welcome the newest member of their clan.
Suddenly, his parents noticed something was wrong with his eyes. He was struggling to open them. And not because he was tired or sleepy. The moment he managed to open them somewhat, they started oozing. A thick layer of crust started forming over his eyes. Was it an infection that he had contracted, perhaps seasonal?
His mom and dad rushed him to the paediatrician. They were expecting eye drops or medication, with the advisory to protect their baby’s eyes in inclement weather. But the news that faced them shattered them to the bone. It ended all the dreams they had seen for their baby in one instant.
For their baby could never see again. The doctor told them that their baby had suffered irreparable damage to both eyes. While he was now permanently blind in his right eye, his left eye’s vision was also reduced. In these early months of his life, before he had even gotten a chance to explore the world he lived in, his vision was scarred. But what on earth had suddenly brought this on? The baby had suffered no accident or injury!
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="634"] Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/[/caption]
The Reason Behind this Baby’s blindness was something we never thought could be dangerous: a camera.
Clicking pictures of babies is one of the most delightful things to do after their birth. You want to store these memories in print and not lose a single moment. Cellphone cameras has made this even easier and more convenient. This is what one of the relatives had been doing during the family visit - clicking pictures. They had been so absorbed that they had forgotten to turn the flash off. The camera was too close to the baby’s eyes. Little did the family member know that their means of making memories would drastically change the course of this baby’s life. Though no one realized this early enough, the baby’s eyes reacted to the bright light of the flash instantly. This reaction damaged the cells on the macula, or the part of the eye that focuses incoming light rays. So severe was the reaction that no surgery could repair it. The baby will always have to live with reduced vision – only because of a moment’s mistake.
Research is underway to study the effects of bright light on an infant’s eyes. Yes, cases like these are extremely rare, but they definitely prove that it is possible for extreme light to damage a baby’s eyesight. While adults have better developed and more resilient bodies, babies are very sensitive. In fact, you are best advised to stay away from bright lighting in your child’s room, bathroom or by his bedside. Prefer dimmer lighting and never directly expose your baby’s eyes to any strong source of light. While clicking a picture, do not use flash and keep the camera at a healthy distance from the child.
It is important to document memories and photography is an excellent way to do it. But keeping your baby safe assumes priority over everything else in life. Don’t let your child pay the price for a simple carelessness you had no idea could bear such grave consequences. Read more

A. from your history it appears that your child is having colic pain due to gas in abdomen
in colic pain you can give anti colic medicines like colicaid 0.5 ml to the child and this medicine can be given maximum three or four times per day but to prevent this problem kindly do regular burping for 15 to 20 minutes.d
do not kee ep the child back on the bed after one burping (all gas is not removed with one burping)
during the cdolic episode you can do stomach massage and limb cycling movements and if the child is more than 2 months of age you can give tummy time also.
advisable to learn more about it from your doctor.

A. the sleeping pattern of the child changes from time to time and will improve with increasing age of the child. if the growth and weight gain of the child is proper along with proper urine stool then there is no need to worry regarding the sleeping pattern.
you have to just see that the child is not having any disturbance during the sleep because it can occur due to gas as well as due to digestion problem. aldso see for the comfort of the child and see the bedding on which the child is sleeping.
try to prevent temperature variations around the child that is from hot to cold and cold to hot weather because that also can cause disturbance in the sleep. d
