Calcium Deficiency In Babies
If you aren’t breastfeeding your baby, one of the health concerns that you need to watch out for is a calcium deficiency. Feeding a baby isn’t complicated, but the sources of food for an infant are limited, which increases the risk of poor nutrition. Also, there are several risk factors that can lead to a calcium deficiency in your baby, ranging from genetics to medication. Find out what calcium deficiency is, how it can affect your baby, and what is the way forward.
Why is Calcium Important for a Baby?
Calcium primarily helps in the proper growth of bones. As your baby will grow rapidly, calcium plays a vital role in his overall bone strength. This has long-lasting implications, as the bone mass of adults is determined by the calcium they receive from infancy to adolescence. In addition to this, calcium also helps in proper muscle function, heart function, and nerve impulse transmission.
Causes of Calcium Deficiency in Infants
Poor supply of oxygen during the delivery of the baby.
Medication for some bacterial infection, such as Gentamicin, can affect your baby’s calcium levels.
Poor exposure of your child to sunlight can lead to a deficiency of Vitamin D. This also reduces calcium levels in your baby, as Vitamin D helps in the proper absorption of calcium.
Infants that are inflicted with a genetic defect called DiGeorge Syndrome suffer from poor levels of calcium in their body.
Studies have shown that infants with congenital hyperthyroidism suffer from low levels of calcium in their bodies.
Studies have shown that premature babies, especially those born before 32 weeks, are likely to develop a calcium deficiency.
There is some speculation over the role of diabetic mothers in causing hypocalcaemia in their babies. A study shows that there may be some relations between them due to maternal hyperthyroidism.
A diet that is rich in cow’s milk can lead to calcium deficiency. This is primarily due to two reasons. One, the infant's body is unable to absorb the calcium in cow’s milk in the first place. Second, milk acidifies the body and calcium is drawn from the bones to negate this acidification, leading to loss of calcium.
Baby Calcium Deficiency Symptoms
Observing the symptoms of calcium deficiency is difficult in infants. Hence, it is important to keep an eye out for some of the signs of calcium deficiency in babies:
Observing a patch of sweat under the baby's pillow and on his hair during nap time
Erratic emotional behaviour in the form of unusual temper, restlessness, and general difficulty in controlling your baby
Teeth formation is late and, once grown, the teeth have defects such as looseness and an uneven alignment.
A protruding belly, which can look similar to a frog’s belly
Poor level of mental concentration
A disinterested approach to the environment around him
Loss of appetite
High susceptibility to diseases due to a poor immune system
Difficulty in sleeping at night and crying more than usual as a result of night terrors.
Suffers from seizures and convulsions due to poor oxygen supply to the brain
Abnormal facial movements, such as twitching of the tongue and lips, fluttering of the eyes, etc.
Poor growth and deformities in the joints
Low blood pressure
Tetany or spasm in the hands and feet, which look similar to a seizure. This is a dangerous symptom and if the deficiency is not addressed, it could lead to the death of the baby.
How to Treat Infant Calcium Deficiency
Even if your child has lower levels of calcium, it can be rectified by a few simple steps such as:
Make sure they have adequate access to sunlight. Vitamin D helps in proper calcium absorption.
Breastmilk is one of the best sources of calcium for babies. If you are unable to supply your own milk, you could employ a wet nurse to help take of your child’s nutritional requirements.
For those infants that suffer from seizures, calcium could be directly administered into the bloodstream. However, this method has one major drawback, which is that if it is injected too quickly it can lead to heart failure.
While calcium deficiency should be addressed urgently, it can be corrected by the methods mentioned above. It has been observed that most new-born babies are vulnerable to low levels of calcium. However, swift action would mean that there is no permanent damage and your baby can grow into a fine adult without any health complications.

If You Post Anything About Your Baby Online, Please Follow These 10 Rules To Keep Him Safe!
Happiness multiplies when shared, right? In this age of social media and the internet, we have an amazing platform to share our happiness with the important people in our life. With just a few clicks, we can connect with loved ones across the globe and keep them cued in on major events in our life and the lives of our little darlings. However, when you use the internet to share anything at all about your baby, it is critical that you observe caution. The web is indeed a webby world, and there can be danger for your child if these safety precautions are missed.
Important Internet Safety Rules When Posting About Kids Online
Rule 1. DO NOT Post Naked Photos of Your Baby
There is no denying that our babies are super, duper cute, from head to toe – and bum included! However, even though all of us click those cute photos of our baby when he is wearing his birthday suit, it is best to not post these online. The internet is notorious for abounding in cyber criminals, including people who indulge in child pornography. Plus, you don’t want these pictures to become a source of embarrassment for your child when he grows up (imagine what will happen if someone re-shares this pictures years later on his/her Facebook timeline!)
Rule 2. DO NOT Disclose Your Kids’ Location
This is particularly important if your little one stays outside home for some time every day, say in daycare, a crèche or at the playground. When you post pictures with location-enabled on Facebook or Instagram, what if someone fishy figures it out and uses this info to trace your child? There have been many cases in the past when internet-derived locations enabled kidnappers and criminals to locate the kids, especially if they are people in and around your neighbourhood. It is best to avoid giving away specific location details online such as house number and block number.
Rule 3. Be Careful if You Post Your Ultrasound Photos
Those ultrasound photos have a special, undying charm, especially the one where we first saw our baby! However, if you post your ultrasound photos, remember that they often include the date, doctor’s name and the hospital where the ultrasound was taken. This is too much identifying information to be safe on the World Wide Web! We recommend cropping that part out if you decide to post it.
Rule 4. Avoid Complaining About Your Kids
We have all spent sleepless nights trying to get the baby to sleep. On some days, it is harder than others, and we wish we could just go on a long vacation. However, try and limit your complaints about parenting and children as far as possible. This is in your best interests only; in the long run, spreading negativity does not do anything to resolve it.
Rule 5. Update Your Privacy Settings on All Social Media Channels
Who all can see the information or pictures you share on your Facebook timeline? What about Instagram and Twitter? You don’t want random strangers or people you barely know to be able to see personal pictures of you and your family. To avoid this, make sure you update your privacy settings as often as possible and keep it close, i.e. people you know well (friends of friends of friends may not be a good idea!). This is one of the most crucial rules of cyber safety for kids too, when they become old enough to use the internet themselves.
Rule 6. Avoid Sharing Embarrassing Pictures/Details About Kids
Admittedly, many of these things are funny – a soiled diaper just after you changed it, for example. However, not every private moment between your baby and you should be accessible to the outside world. This is even more important for specific things that your child may do – e.g. bedwetting, or being punished for throwing a tantrum. Every baby does soil diapers, but some moments are meant only for mommy! The main reason we advise this is that such pictures or status updates can embarrass or shame your kids in later years. Violating their privacy even in the early years might create a dent in your otherwise positive relationship with the kids.
Rule 7. DO NOT Post Pictures of Others’ Kids Without Permission
All the kids in your colony may have attended your baby’s first birthday party, and you want to document the moment forever. However, think: how irritated does it make you when someone tags you in a picture you did not want your friends/family to see? Without checking first if you were okay with it? The same rule applies to kids of other people. Some parents don’t like to share pictures of their kids or disclose their details to others. As a rule, never post their pictures before first confirming with their parents.
Rule 8. Ask Family and Friends to Get Your Go-Ahead Before Posting Your Kids’ Pictures
An extension of the above rule, you too must make sure that no one posts pictures of your baby without asking your permission first. This includes your family members too – your in-laws, relatives, guests who came to the party, and friends. Ask them politely to please check with you before posting any pictures on social media (and this includes posting even if they have not tagged you! You may not be aware of it but that picture you didn’t want to make public lurks somewhere on the internet…)
Rule 9. DO NOT Reveal These Details About Your Baby Online
There are some very personal details that equal to sensitive data. This data must never be shared online, even if it seems harmless to do so. When you’re trying to figure out how to stay safe on the internet, NEVER share these things:
Where your child goes to play in the evening
The address (or other details) of your child’s friends and their houses
When you are going to be away from home
Any information that gives away when the child will be alone/with a babysitter
Details about your workplace, address, identity, etc. that someone can use to impersonate you
Rule 10. DO NOT Criticise Others’ Parenting Style/Decisions
Just because we as parents DO NOT use pacifiers, or DO NOT babywear, or DO NOT let our baby sleep separately, it does not give us the right to criticise other parents who do! The way we parent and the decisions we take are ours alone. If we want others to accept our decisions, we must be accepting of their decisions and choices too. While this is not a safety hazard per se, it does circulate a feeling of negativity and judgment – something no parent needs in this already challenging journey.
So moms, how many of the above rules have you been following? They are essential to make sure that your experience of the internet and social media is joyful and safe – just what you want for your baby. Read more

“The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do.” by Thomas Jefferson
“By the time I am nearing the end of a story, the first part will have been reread and altered and corrected at least one hundred and fifty times. I am suspicious of both facility and speed. Good writing is essentially rewriting. I am positive of this.” by Roald Dahl
“A writer has the duty to be good, not lousy; true, not false; lively, not dull; accurate, not full of error. He should tend to lift people up, not lower them down. Writers do not merely reflect and interpret life; they inform and shape life.” by E.B. White

“There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they’ll take you.” by Beatrix Potter
“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” by Sylvia Plath

“All good writing is swimming under water and holding your breath.” by F. Scott Fitzgerald
“Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the readers.” by Stephen King

“I often meet frustrated young writers who say they’ve only got so far and just can’t finish a book. Even if you don’t happen to use what you’ve worked on that day, it has taught you something and you’ll be amazed when you might come back to it and use it again.” by Eoin Colfer

My favourite childhood memories which i cherish always and forever.
Being a 90's kid i have tons and tons of memories. It was an exciting era where we kids then, got to enjoy a transition period. We witnessed the changing times. A world growing modern and technologically driven day by day. I must say that we got to enjoy the right things at the right time unlike today's childrens. Sharing few of my memories which I would adore forever.
When we were kids we had a typical ancient styled houses of our grandparents. Visiting them during weekends or holidays was pure joy. Those houses had a different kind of positive vibe which i badly miss and also regret that the kids now rarely get to see such houses. the feeling of spending the holidays there cant be expressed in words.
We had some great toys during our time. The hand held water game toys, the pop pop boats, dolls with kitchen set, the cap guns, The brick game in the vedio games.
Miss my school days. those games which we used to play during the breaks with papers like the 'colour colour which colour" game. "name, place, animal and thing" game. and "flames". Playing with our pens on the desk, collecting stamps and posters, also used to collect some tiny toys, stickers and so on.
I miss those ink pens, awesome smelling erasers in different shapes, ink erasers and the ultimate pen pencil.
Miss those tasty chocolates of 90's like the kismiss, caramel, cocanaka, mango bite, lacto kind and so many which i go on listing. Also i remember a biscuit which had shapes of animals and birds. It was like asking each other which shapes you want and enjoying it eating together.
The eagerness of hearing the last school bell having an ice lolipop on the way home.
Weekends were about watching the movies. Also used to enjoy the advertisements very much.
Used to love the tv shows on dhoordarshan channel like malgudi days, surabhi and some awesome serials.
Summer vacations were about going on a tour. Places during those days were much greener and fresher than today.
Just few days before the school reopens we all used to have the best loved thing to do that is to paper bind our school books and stick our personal favorite labels to it.
We had so many interesting story books that time. The tinkle, panchatantra, chacha choudary etc etc. So many beautiful songs to listen in our tape recorders. Collection of cassettes, the walk man craze was just awesome. Also cant forget the computer y2k boom!!
The season special. Summers were all about making refreshing sharbaths, the electricity cut downs then sleeping in the verandas. Because of sweating for some cool breeze. Power cuts very also one enjoyable moment. With no investors at home it was very special with candles around. Though long power cuts were sometimes frustrating now when i look and think about it, i have a faint smile on my face writing here.
Seasons were about enjoying the rains. also making paper boats and playing in the rains. Winters were all about good winter foods, Christmas and new year celebrations. I remember in our flat they used to keep a Christmas grandpa doll. When there was a happy feeling about the new year, a slight sad feeling somewhere because the grandpa doll was blown away.
Usual celebrations but those days were filled with more warmth and love which is missing nowadays.
Many fond past remembrances of childhood. I could recollect and pen down few of these memories. Actually can write a whole book on this topic. It will be tressured forever. Read more
