What is Potty Training?
The process of training little children to use the toilet for peeing and pooping is what potty training is all about. As babies, children are used to diapers. But as they grow into toddlers, it is important to train them to use toilets, and this must be done at the right age.
Potty training doesn’t start with making children use toilets right away. They learn to do that gradually.The complete phase of transitioning from diapers to using proper toilets is called potty training. So, here is a systematic guide that clearly states all the do’s and don’ts of potty training boys.
How to Start Potty Training for Boys
To start with, potty training a toddler boy requires a lot of patience, and it is believed that they stay in diapers longer than girls. Motivation is another key factor that will help you train your little boy to use a potty seat. The following are some things your could keep in mind before you begin to toilet train your little boy-
Age plays a huge role in getting your son potty trained without any hassle. A parent must start the training when the little boy is willing to learn or even more so when he is physically able to cope with the training.
While some boys may be ready for toilet training as soon as they turn 2, some may be ready only after their third birthday.Toilet training at 3 years may sound like it is very late, but if your toddler is not ready, you mustn’t insist on getting him trained.
Also, if your little boy is coping with other changes like the arrival of a new sibling, change of school or travelling, it is advisable to wait till he has emotionally coped with these changes before introducing anything else.
Initially, you will need to train your baby to poop in a small potty seat. But even before you get there, you need to chalk out a holistic plan. Also, if you observe him showing an interest in other’s bathroom habits, it is time to chalk out a plan to help him form his own. Other important behavioural traits include demonstrating a desire for independence, taking pride in his accomplishments and being cooperative.
Cognitive Signs: The following cognitive development milestones are also important while potty training a 2 year old. The child should be able to understand physical signals and should also be able to give signals themselves whenever necessary. Being able to follow simple and straightforward instructions is another cognitive development milestone that is necessary before starting any training at all. Experts also emphasise that learning to tidy up their toys is more important for children than learning to keep themselves clean. They should also have some code word for stool and urine which they can use to communicate whenever they must pee or poop.

Potty Training Tips for Boys
As parents, it is important to be fully prepared to help the baby achieve each milestone with confidence. These toilet training ideas will help you to get over this phase of your child’s development without much hassle.
Children love to imitate. Hence, the best way to potty train a boy is to let him observe his daddy using the toilet when peeing. Very soon he will be intrigued and would like to try it out himself.
It is important to go about the training step by step. Experts suggest that it is always helpful to train the child to go potty in a child-sized potty where he can sit comfortably, and his legs touch the ground. This will also give him a sense of possession, and he may just think of it as a new toy where he can poop peacefully. This needs to be followed if you are starting as early as 18 months old. However, if you start the training at the age of 3 or older, then you can just buy a comfortable adapter seat for your toilet. In this case, though, you will also have to put a footstool in front of him, so that he sits comfortably without his legs dangling. This will also come in handy to get on and off the potty easily and independently.
An extra piece of advice is to buy a potty seat without a urine guard.
The next phase is to help the child get comfortable with the potty. Create a sense of possession for the potty seat in your child. Write your boy’s name on it or even decorate it with some stickers. Let him playfully sit on it for a week or so before you suggest that he takes his pants off and sits on it . You can also do a role-play on how to use the potty seat. Use his favourite stuffed doll or animal toy for demonstration. This makes the whole process of potty training enjoyable for him and easier for you.
Motivate your child to become like his dad or elder brother. Tell him that he can choose his favourite underwear and wear it like his father and brother do. If he is initially uncomfortable, let him try wearing them on top of the diaper. Slowly he should be willing to ditch the diaper and wear only underwear.
Setting up a training schedule based on your personal schedule and your son’s time table is very important. If your son goes to a day care or pre-school, do share your potty training strategy with them. Since your son will take his own time to learn, keep some diapers and disposable pants handy for night time and travel.
Bowel movements and the tendency to urinate usually come at the same time. Hence, it is advisable to make your son sit first. Avoid making him sit for too long as he will avoid trying it from very next time. Once your son starts pooping and peeing in a sitting position, teach him how to stand and pee. Once again, a demonstration from daddy with by helpful. You can also float some oval shaped object for target practice, but please remember that should be your last resort as it can become very messy.
Around the time he usually has bowel movements, take off his pants and let him be for some time. Keep the potty seat handy so that as soon as you see the signs you can make him sit on it.
Celebrate each success by rewarding him with stickers or stars. That will keep him inspired. If you don’t succeed the first time, do try repeatedly till you get there; but remember to do so with lots of love, patience, innovation and positive reinforcement. You can also buy him picture books and cartoon CDs around potty training and let him watch them. They are usually fun, and children love watching and learning from them.
Once your baby boy has learned to stay dry all day, it is time to move to night-time training. This will take a longer time as it will require him to hold his urine for a certain period. If your little boy wants to sleep without diapers, let him do that. A few days will be experimental, and he may wet the bed, but slowly he will learn to wake up for peeing and then eventually will hold his urine for the rest of the night. This training may take weeks or even months.

Interventions during Labor and Delivery
If you are a mother-to-be for the first time, you may be hoping for natural childbirth. However, deliveries do not always go as planned and your obstetrician may have to intervene in the birthing process to ensure that you and your baby are safe and healthy. This type of medical assistance during childbirth is called an intervention.
Common Interventions during Childbirth
There are several kinds of interventions may be done during your labour and delivery process. These include:
1. Labour Induction Using Pitocin
This is a method of artificially inducing labour.
What is It?
It is a method of inducing labour through synthetic oxytocin, called Pitocin, given through an intravenous drip. It stimulates labour contractions in your uterus.
Why is it Done?
Induction with Pitocin is done if you are more than 2 weeks past your due date, diabetic, carrying multiples or low amniotic fluid levels.
How to Lower the Risk?
If induction is absolutely unavoidable, talk about the dosage and how to manage the pain if it is excessive. It should be done only if the baby is in danger and this risk outweighs other risks occurring due to the induction process.
2. Labour Induction with Membrane Sweep
A method of induction to speed up labour.
What is It?
It is induction done manually by the obstetrician. The doctor will insert her finger into the opening of the cervix and move it around in a circular sweep to separate the amniotic membranes from the cervix. This induces labour.
Why is it Done?
A membrane sweep is done to induce or speed up labour if you are past your due date.
How to Lower the Risk?
If you do not prefer this intervention, make it clear to the obstetrician during your birthing plan discussion. To reduce discomfort and pain, try the breathing exercises you practised in birthing class.
3. Amniotomy
This is an invasive method of labour induction.
What is It?
It is rupturing of the amniotic sac using a hook-like instrument inserted through the vagina to kick-start the labour process or speed it up.
Why is it Done?
It is done because the baby is at risk inside the womb and needs to be delivered as soon as possible.
How to Lower the Risks?
To lower the risk of infection, sterile equipment is used. If you do not want this intervention, make it clear to your gynaecologist well in advance. Try natural ways of labour induction like nipple stimulation.
4. Episiotomy
An invasive intervention is done during a vaginal delivery.
What is It?
The obstetrician makes an incision in your perineum (the membrane of skin separating the vagina and anus) using surgical scissors during a natural delivery.
Why is it Done?
Episiotomy is done to widen the vaginal opening to make the delivery easier and quicker.
How to Lower the Risks?
Studies have shown that an episiotomy is not beneficial to the mom or baby. Tell your doctor you wish to avoid an episiotomy unless it is absolutely unavoidable. To lower the risk of infection post-episiotomy, proper after-care of the stitches is required.
5. Electronic Foetal Monitoring (EFM)
The vital signs of the foetus are monitored to ensure that the baby is doing well.
What is It?
This is a method of monitoring the baby’s heart rate during the delivery to ensure that the baby is healthy. It can be done externally using a Doppler device or internally with a foetal scalp electrode.
Why is it Done?
Foetal monitoring is necessary if the baby is at high risk or if you are having labour induction or an epidural.
How to Lower the Risks?
To lower the risks, ask your ObGyn how to plan the birthing process with minimal interventions. Internal foetal monitoring is invasive and is used only for deliveries where the baby is at very high risk. Opt for external monitoring and try not to remain in bed continuously during labour.
6. Epidural
This is an anaesthetic given to mothers.
What is It?
An epidural is a spinal anaesthetic given to the mother to reduce the labour pain.
Why is it Done?
It is done if the mother is in too much pain and asks for pain relief medication.
How to Lower the Risks?
To lower the risks associated with an epidural, opt for epidural-free childbirth. Manage the labour pain using breathing exercises that you practised in birthing class.
7. Assisted Vaginal Delivery
Sometimes, a vaginal delivery does not happen smoothly and requires assistance.
What is It?
The obstetrician helps deliver the baby vaginally using forceps or a vacuum extractor.
Why is it Done?
It is done if the baby is stuck in the birthing canal and has breathing difficulties.
How to Lower the Risks?
Avoid forceps to lower the risk of injury to the baby and the mother. Opt for a vacuum pump or C-section to deliver quickly if the baby is in distress.
8. Caesarean Section or C-section
This is the last resort and is done when there is no possibility of a safe vaginal delivery.
What is It?
It is a surgical procedure done with the mother under epidural anaesthesia. The baby is removed from the mother’s uterus via an incision made in her abdomen.
Why is it Done?
It is done if the baby is in danger and needs to be delivered immediately. It is also done if the baby is in breech position.
How to Lower the Risks?
To lower the risk of C-sections, make a comprehensive natural birthing plan with your gynaecologist and choose a doctor having a low C-section rate. If it is unavoidable, proper after-care is necessary to avoid infection at the site of surgery.
How to Avoid Unnecessary Birth Interventions?
Here are some tips to avoid unnecessary birthing interventions:
1. Childbirth Classes
Taking birthing classes will help you prepare for your delivery, and you will learn breathing techniques to manage the pain.
2. Proper Birthing Plan
Having a proper birthing plan chalked out with your doctor and making your preferences about various interventions very clear will help you avoid unnecessary interventions
3. Consider a Midwife or a Doula
Women who worked with a midwife and had continuous support from a doula during delivery were found less likely to have interventions like epidurals, assisted deliveries or C-sections.
Birth interventions have varying degrees of risks associated with them. Before your due date, discuss different kinds of interventions you need to be ready for with your gynaecologist. Preparing well in advance is the key to a smooth and safe delivery!

Soha is a staunch believer in the mantra – fitness first! And this holds even truer during pregnancy, when your body is going through so much. Prenatal yoga is an excellent way to keep yourself energetic, fit and physically active.

What’s pregnancy without a couple (or more) of wild cravings? If you are one of those lucky and super-in-control women who don’t have cravings, we bow to you. However, many of us crave for food when expecting – either sweet, savoury, or plain weird tastes. While doctors recommend that a balanced diet is key for a pregnant women, they will also agree to this – it’s okay to let yourself go once in a while! A happy heart maketh a happy body!
Esha seems to be having a blast enjoying sugary food during pregnancy. She recently posted a picture of herself in a cupcake shop, saying, “Hummmmm!!!! And my expression says it all - waiting for my cup cakes! Need the sugar rush as I shop!” Well, since Esha is also carefully monitoring her diet, exercises, yoga and meditation, she sure is allowed the occasional cupcake!
5. Spend Time With Your Mom
No one like mom to give you reassurance, faith and pampering when you need it most! As a pregnant mom, it is a great idea to spend time with your favourite person in the world – the one who loves you unconditionally and will give you expert tips to manage this challenging phase of life.
Esha is opting to spend a lot of time with mom Hema Malini as she prepares to bring her baby into the world. As per a source, she is staying with her mother and visiting her in-laws regularly. Friends play a very important role during pregnancy; they keep you feeling charged up, excited and delighted. 7. Don’t Let Anyone Judge You or Dictate Terms During Pregnancy
Recently, Celina posted a picture of herself where she’s wearing a bikini and showing her baby bump. To many people, this picture might probably come across as ‘offensive’, ‘boastful’ or ‘something only celebs and fit people can do’. But in posting this picture, Celina has a deeper message – we need to feel free as women, and as pregnant women. We must not allow anyone else to dictate terms or give us appropriate code of conduct. This is essential to stay positive, free and happy – and keep your baby happy and healthy too.

Talking about the picture, Celina says, “Despite the not-so-glamorous effects that come along with the blessings of a twin pregnancy on one’s body, it was very important for me to be a role-model who radiates confidence, self-respect and friendliness for other adults and children in our size-oriented society. Everyone believes in preconceived stereotypes about how pregnant Indian women should conduct themselves and their pregnancies.”
Celina’s point is that she is free to do as she likes, just as any other Indian woman is, despite social judgment about how a woman’s body is supposed to be, or how a pregnant woman is supposed to behave. She says, “It is not proving a point but it is accepting and conveying the fact that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. A positive cesarean: even a difficulty could be a blessing
'The baby is oblique!' exclaimed my gynaecologist during my 32 week scan. It was my first pregnancy and I couldn't comprehend anything. My doctor explained that my baby is in breech position and I have to undergo a cesarean if the baby doesn't turn to head down position by 38 weeks. She also hinted that the chances for the breech baby to turn are very less.
Cesarean? The term had been a nightmare since my childhood. My mum underwent 2 cesareans and as a consequence 5 hernia surgeries. I’ve seen her undergo a lot of pain during each surgery and it took a long recovery time. Moreover, I had witnessed my friends and relatives grumble over their never-ending back pain caused by the spinal anesthesia injected during a cesarean. All these thoughts stressed me and I was clueless of what next.
My mum and relatives were equally bothered. They poured in a lot of suggestions to naturally turn the breech baby to head down position. Right from crawling on the ground and trying yoga poses, to exposing my baby bump to different temperatures, light variations, music beats, we turned all the stones to make it happen. But God had other plans!
At 38 weeks, the situation was still the same. I was advised am emergency c-section due to low fluid levels. I was unhappy with what was happening to me.
I unwinded myself at the end of the day to accept the situation and find peace. As I sat down with my eyes closed, a scene which happened early that day flashed in my brain. That morning when I went for the final scan, I met a married women of my age. She was trying to help me grab my slippers post my scan. As we had a casual talk, I came to know that she had huge masses in her ovary and she have to undergo a surgery to remove them.
As I was recollecting those moments, an unknown distress struck me. A woman of my age, with a lot of dreams for having a baby, must undergo a huge procedure to set things right. It immediately dawned on me that my problem is just like a drop in the ocean. There are many women facing huge complications in conceiving a baby and are fighting bravely to experience the bliss of childbearing.
