What Is Chicken Pox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease and can easily infect anyone who comes into contact with the infected child. This disease is a common illness in children below 12 years of age.
Is Chickenpox Infectious?

Direct contact
Indirect Contact
Direct contact means spreading of infection through kissing and saliva. Therefore, if your child has chickenpox, refrain from kissing the child. Indirect contact means spreading of infection through coming in indirect contact with blister fluids. The infection can even spread through cough, and sneeze of the infected child. Though chickenpox is very contagious in humans, the virus does not spread to pets like dogs or cats.
Causes
Chickenpox is caused by varicella zoster virus or VZV. This virus causes painful rashes on the body. Infants and children can easily get infected with this highly contagious virus. Most of the times, it becomes very difficult to find out how and when your baby got this infection. This is because the virus can spread even before the appearance of the first pustule on the body. Therefore, an infant coming into direct contact with anyone with this infection can get infected. Once infected, the pustules start to appear on the child’s body as early as a week of getting the infection or as late as two to three weeks.
Symptoms Of Chickenpox
Chickenpox infection usually starts with flu-like symptoms. Signs of chickenpox in infants and children include the following:
Fever
Headache
Nausea
Stomach ache
Pains and aches
Loss of appetite
The rashes will start to appear on the baby’s body a few days after he has been infected. Complications Of Chickenpox

Shingles
Shingles is a skin rash. It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. If your child has already had a bout of chickenpox then this virus stays in the nerve cells of the spine. Though it does not affect the functioning of the nerves, this virus can cause shingles in the later stages of life. Shingles are rarely seen in children below 12 years of age. It is more common in older people than in children.
Diagnosing Chicken Pox
Diagnosing chickenpox in your child in the initial stage can be tricky as the symptoms are the same as flu. The child will have a fever, running nose, headache, cough, and may feel extremely fatigued. There may be a loss of appetite too. It is only after a few days that the child will show substantial symptoms such as the appearance of rashes on the face and other parts of the body including genitals. Some children will only have a few spots on the body whereas other children might have plenty. These spots will cause pain and itching. How To Treat Chickenpox In Children?
Your child’s immune system is what fights the chickenpox virus. The treatment recommended by the doctor will include easing the pain and discomfort of the child. Apart from that, the following things can also take care of some of the issues related to chicken pox:
Fever - Proper medication will be given to the child to control the fever. One of the most popular medicines used is Acyclovir. It must be administered as soon as 24 hours after the first rashes break out for the best results

Neem leaves - Need leaves are another great way to prevent the sores from hurting. You can either crush them into a paste and apply it or boil the leaves and use a washcloth after it cools down
Gauze pads - Soaking a gauze pad in bicarbonate soda and water and applying them on the wounds is another way to reduce the itchy feeling
Mittens and socks - By having your kids put on mittens or socks on their hands, you can prevent them from itching their skin, which can otherwise lead to scarring
Prevention
Chicken pox in babies can easily be prevented with the chickenpox vaccination. Children who have had a chickenpox shot get 80 to 90 percent protection from this infection. The question is can you get chickenpox after being vaccinated?
Some children who do not develop complete protection from the virus may have a bout of chickenpox after being exposed to the infection. However, this bout of chickenpox is milder, causes fewer rashes, and almost no fever. Chickenpox vaccination is given to the child after 12 months to 15 months and a booster dose is also recommended from 4 to 6 years of age.
The vaccination can be given as a single vaccination for chickenpox alone or in formulation with other vaccination that comes as MMRV (mumps, measles, rubella, and varicella).
Other methods of prevention of the disease include not allowing your child to come in contact with an infected person as the disease can spread. It is important that the child understands the situation as he/she could feel left out during this delicate time. Also, maintaining hygiene will enable the child to build a stronger immune system against the occurrence of such diseases. However, the best way is to ensure that your child is administered with the chickenpox vaccine.

When You Should Give Chicken Pox Vaccine
Chicken pox vaccine can be given as soon as one year after the birth of your child. The vaccine is given in two shots which should be at least three months apart. Therefore, the first schedule of medicine should take place between 12 months to 15 months. The second schedule or the booster dosage is given to the child between 4 to 6 years of age. If by any chance this schedule is missed then a child of 13 or more years can receive two doses at 1 month apart.
Is Chicken Pox Vaccine Safe?
Chickenpox vaccine is effective in the prevention of chicken pox and it is also very safe for babies. The vaccine helps your child to fight the infection by developing antibodies in the body. This vaccination involves injection of a weakened form of the virus in your child. Though there may be some redness and pain, it will gradually subside.
While it is entirely up to the parents to take a call on whether or not to get the child vaccinated against chicken pox, it is recommended by heath experts. Chicken pox in vaccinated children is milder and does not cause much discomfort.

Place the baby’s tummy gently over their hips. Ensure that the head of the baby remains elevated over its entire body.
In this position, gently pat the baby’s back using your palm.
You could also rub it in an upward circular motion if patting does not help.
3. Chest
If your baby wakes up during shoulder burp, then try the chest burping methods instead. This might help them feel more comfortable and may allow them to sleep longer after mealtime.
Lift the baby gently to the chest, placing one hand under their bottom and one hand on their back.
Allow their body to stay in a curled-up position instead of letting their legs stretch out. This position is more likely to help them stay asleep.

4. Lap

How Long Does Burping Take
Usually, burping only take less than two minutes so that you can burp a sleeping baby fast. Sometimes, babies might burp right after your move them into an upright position, but sometimes, you might have to wait for a few minutes and help them externally through gentle tummy pressure or pats. Another helpful way for your baby to get into the zone is to get them to sleep in their crib instead of letting them fall asleep while feeding. People with hyper tension should eat foods rich in folic acid, Vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, magnesium to protect and keep your heart healthy.
Fruits are a good source of energy and are rich in high potassium and Vitamin C. Consume fruits that are rich in Potassium. Eat a healthy and a balanced diet. Keep your body hydrated and drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water a day. Make sure to eat only home cooked meals and avoid restaurant food.
Eat a low sodium diet. Eating too much of wrong salt can irritate the endothelial cells and increase water retention which will spike up your blood levels. Reduce weight if over weight. Try to incorporate green leafy vegetables, unsalted sunflower and pumpkin seeds, almonds, apricots, raisins, figs, walnuts, milk, yogurt, bananas, apples, avocados, peaches, plums, melons, oranges etc.

It relieves high and low BP, depression, thyroid problems, migraine, asthma, sleep apnea, insomnia, anxiety, acidity, snoring, bronchitis. The Victorious breath pranayama can be practiced for 10-15 minutes.
2. Kapalabhati Pranayama- Kapalabhati pranayama is a cleansing pranayama that flushes out all the impurities present in the body through the nostrils. It also brings a fresh glow to the face, lightens the skull. It relives low and high BP, cholesterol, triglycerides, heart problems, kidney problems, menstrual and menopause problems, diabetes and helps in weight loss. It builds muscle and bone mass. Practice this for 15-20 minutes daily.
3. Brahmari Pranayama- Brahmari Pranayama is also known as humming bee breath. The sound created resembles the sound of a bee. This breathing exercise instantly calms your mind and soothes the nervous system. This Pranayama can be practiced three to four times a day. This breathing exercise relieves high BP, depression, anger, anxiety, fear, insomnia and mental stress. This practice is also great for building confidence, inner strength and excellent to balance hormones. Practice this for 15 minutes.
4. Anulom Vilom Pranayama or Nadi Shodana Pranayama- Also known as alternate nostril breathing is the one the best breathing practices which immediately calms down your mind. It relieves high BP, anxiety, depression, mental stress, menstrual cycles, purifies the nervous system, balances the right and left hemisphere of the brain. 2. Adho Mukha Virasana- This pose is also known as downward-facing hero pose. This is a very comfortable posture and can be performed right from the first day of your pregnancy until the day your baby is born. This pose eases breathing, rests the heart, helps treat high blood pressure and diabetics, allows your breathing to flow freely into your groin, lower back and spine, sides of the torso, and abdomen, assists during labor. This pose can also be performed for all three trimesters.
3. Ardha Uttanasana- This pose is also called as Half intense forward stretch pose. This posture needs to be practiced with a lot of care to not compress your abdomen during pregnancy. It helps in strengthening the abdominal organs, calming the mind, alleviating depression, relieves from back and stomach pain. Restores normal blood pressure, creates space for the fetus to grow and extend its limbs, lengthens and straightens the back of the cervix and the vagina. This pose also can be practiced for all three trimesters.
4. Salamba Purvottanasana- Also known as Supported eastern intense stretch pose is an amazing posture which lifts the spine and the inner organs., lifts and widens the diaphragm and gives support to the heart as well. Provides space in the chest and allows the breath to be deep and smooth. Relieves nervous tension and helps the mind and body to calm down. This is a pose that should be avoided in the first trimester. It can be done in second and third trimester. This posture should be avoided in case of bleeding and white discharge.
5. Adho Mukha Shvanasana- This pose is also called Downward-facing dog pose. It should be practiced with ropes and a support for the head. During pregnancy standing asanas cause a lot of fatigue thus this asana removes fatigue. This pose helps in lowering blood pressure, relieves lower back pain, headaches, fatigue and palpitations. Lessens swellings in the legs and ankles. It increases blood supply to the brain, restores normal blood pressure and heartbeat, extends the spine and helps to strengthen the spinal muscles, eliminates shortness of breath. This posture can be performed in all three trimesters, as long as your comfortable.
6. Ardha Chandrasana- This pose is also called as the Half moon pose. This asana is great to be performed during pregnancy. It relieves from anxiety, nervous tension, fatigue. Reduces nausea and vomiting, it strengthens the spine and the pelvic muscles, it regulates blood pressure, provides space in the uterus and maintains proper kidney functions also checks bleeding during pregnancy. Pregnant ladies detected with toxemia should avoid practicing this posture. Otherwise it can be practiced in all three trimesters.
7. Parshvottanasana- This posture is also known as Intense chest stretch pose. 8. Prasarita Padottanasana- Also known as Intense leg stretch posture. During pregnancy there is a lot of discomfort and pain in the body. Thus this asana is of great during both menstruation and pregnancy. It relieves low and high blood pressure, anxiety, morning sickness during pregnancy, increase blood circulation, strengthens the hips, legs, knees and feet. Stretches and widens the pelvic region, improves digestion. When you feel exhausted or have symptoms of toxemia this pose should be strictly avoided. It can be practiced throughout pregnancy. In first trimester it should be practiced with concave back.
9. Ardha Halasana- This asana is also called as Half plough posture. This asana helps to strengthen and firm the spine, especially during the first trimester. Some women face the problem of vaginal bleeding in the initial stages of pregnancy, this pose is extremely beneficial to prevent the bleeding. Helps treat kidney problems, both as regular precaution and during pregnancy. Also helps in urinary problems. Practicing this pose will help you massage your energize your brain, neck, lungs, heart and abdomen. It can be practiced during all three trimesters.
10. Setu Bandha Sarvangasana- This pose is also called Bridge pose. This is one such pose that a pregnant woman shouldn’t skip practicing during her pregnancy as it helps to build courage. This posture helps in improving heart and kidney functions, removes heaviness, relieves headache, diabetes, back pain, hip pain, thyroid, fatigue, anxiety, depression. The arrival of a baby in the family is a cause of celebration like never before. But sometimes, this celebration is marred by complications in the baby’s birth - complications that can even be life threatening. Thanks to advancement in medical science, the team of doctors looking after the delivery has become the life saver in many cases like these. Recently, an 8-day-old baby girl from Dibrugarh, Assam, was also going through one such life threatening condition. But in her case, Indian PM Narendra Modi himself turned out to be the one who gave her a new lease of life...
This baby girl was born in Dibrugarh, Assam, a few days ago. Her parents - Mom Himakshi and Dad Dhrubajyoti - both come from a middle class background. While her father works in Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer, her mother is a primary school teacher. The birth of their baby was a moment of immense joy for the parents. However, the happiness was short-lived.
Their baby was born with a serious condition called ‘Meconium Aspiration Syndrome’. The baby's first poop had entered the lungs and partially or completely blocked the airways. The little girl was fighting for life, in the first few days of her arrival itself.
What is Meconium Aspiration Syndrome?
Meconium is the dark green faecal material produced in the intestines of the baby before birth. In fact, a newborn passes meconium stools for the first few days of their life (this is the almost black poop you must have seen your little one pass after birth).
However, sometimes, due to the stress a baby experiences before or during birth, the meconium stool can get passed when the baby is in the uterus itself. This stool thereafter mixes with the amniotic fluid that surrounds the foetus. Simply put, this means that the baby could inhale the meconium and amniotic fluid mixture shortly before, during or after birth. This condition is known as Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (or MAS).
MAS isn't life threatening in many cases. However, if the condition of the newborn continues to worsen, MAS could even prove to be fatal.
Saving The 8 Day Old Baby Girl
The baby girl was struggling in the hospital for several days. But her condition kept worsening. She needed more advanced treatment which could only be given to her in Delhi. The doctors in Assam decided to carry out an emergency air transfer via an air ambulance so the baby could reach Delhi quickly. The main challenge, however, was to ensure she reached the Delhi hospital in time for proper medical assistance to be provided to her. Any delay in her transfer could turn out to have serious consequences.The ambulance was supposed to reach IGI airport in Delhi at approximately 7 PM. And this is the time when the traffic on Delhi roads is at its peak because of the evening rush hour! The baby girl was breathing with the assistance of her respiratory machine. A delay would not just mean delay in bringing her medical treatment but also the scary possibility that her machine could malfunction or run out of time...
This is where the honourable Prime Minister of India stepped in. With clear instructions to the Delhi Police, he himself made sure that the traffic was completely clear for the rescue team. This traffic-free passage from the airport to the hospital ensured that the team could carry out the transfer in time, without any hassle. The newborn managed to reach the hospital with exactly seven minutes left in her respiratory machine! She has been admitted to Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi. As per the doctors, she is still suffering from persistent pulmonary hypertension. But the good news is that she is out of danger and is slowly but steadily recovering.
Without the Prime Minister's intervention, it would have been an almost impossible task to make this possible in time. At a time where every second is precious, this move by Mr. Modi was instrumental in saving the newborn's life.
The Prime Minister's Move Proved to be a Boon for The Baby and Her Parents
Dhrubajyoti Kalita, the father of the infant, had long been making several attempts to get help for his daughter. But nothing had worked out. He says that the Prime Minister was nothing less than a 'God' in their lives. When everything had seemed extremely bleak, he turned out to be the ray of hope that gave them the strength to fight this through.
"He is our God today. We sought help from several influential people, including a top IPS officer from northeast working with Delhi police. Nobody did anything. We did not know what would happen to our daughter.The way we were received at the airport was beyond our imagination. Delhi police was extremely cordial and professional. We cannot thank enough the Prime Minister and Delhi police”.
Every life is precious. With his quick thinking and thoughtful assistance, the Prime Minister has certainly proved how, as the leader of this country, he will take every measure to safeguard our lives. 1/2 cup avocado, de - seeded and peeled
For the Filling
1 onion, cut into rings
4 lettuce leaves
6 slices cucumber
6 slices pear / apple
1 cup carrot, grated
Method
Step 1
Take two slices of whole wheat bread on a plate.
Step 2
In a bowl, remove the pulp from the avocado, add black pepper powder and salt. Mix it well.
Step 3
Spread this avocado pulp on the bread evenly.
Step 4
Now place the lettuce leaves over the avocado pulp. Put the onion rings and grated carrot. Pile up with cucumber and pear / apple slices.
Step 5
Place a bread slice and apply the avocado pulp again. Repeat step 4 and cover with the plain bread slice.
Step 6
Grill the sandwich, if you want a crunchy texture to the sandwich.
Step 7
Serve it with tomato ketchup or mint-coriander chutney.
