Are Traits Inherited from Parents to Offspring
When you see a trait that your child exhibits which are similar to something you possess, know that this isn’t just some random coincidence. Traits are inherited and passed from parent to child through their genes. Some are passed from the mother and some from the father. Others depend on what traits are most prominent in both the parents, if they are dominant traits and if they run in the family.
What is Inherited Traits?
In a baby, there are certain traits belonging to both the parents that he will adopt. The baby might have the father’s nose or the mother’s mouth. The genes of both parent’s influence what traits and characteristics the baby will have and these are called inherited traits.
Role of Genes in Inherited Traits
Children inherit genes from both their mother and father. What we see in the end are the dominant set of genes or dominant genes. Boys have one X and one Y chromosome while girls have two X chromosomes. The X chromosome contains more genes than the Y chromosome, and hence girls will have double the opportunity to exhibit dominant genetic traits inherited from parents than boys. For example, a boy may inherit a blood disorder called haemophilia while his sister will still carry the gene even if she does not have the disorder herself.
List of Traits Which are Inherited from Mother
So what traits are inherited from the mother and what from the father? Let’s look at a few genetic traits inherited from mother below:
1. Left-handedness
Being left-handed is pretty rare, so the genes responsible for this trait are also quite complicated. If the baby’s father is left-handed, there is a slight chance the baby might be too, but if his mother is left-handed, then the possibility increases exponentially. If both parents are left-handed, the baby will be so too. Also, if all the people on the mother’s family tree are left-handed, the baby will inherit this trait. There can be other personality traits inherited from mother.
2. Blood sugar
Diabetes is something that is quite easily inherited from parent to child. If the mother carrying a baby was suffering from diabetes pre-pregnancy, her baby could have it too. If the woman can keep her diabetes well under control and blood sugar levels stable during and before pregnancy, she can still deliver a healthy baby. If she has Type 1 diabetes, there is a chance the baby can have low blood sugar soon after birth and for the first few days.
3. Sleeping Style
The mother’s genetics seem to play a huge role in the baby inheriting sleep traits like tossing or turning, and insomnia. But this can also be because most mothers sync their nap time with their babies during the first few months’ post-delivery.
4. Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a rare inflammatory disease caused by ticks. It is serious but not life-threatening. If a woman is pregnant and has Lyme disease, she can pass it onto her unborn baby. For a baby, Lyme disease is quite fatal so take measures to avoid contracting it before pregnancy to keep your baby safe.
5. Drug Addiction
Addiction can play a huge role in genetics and DNA sequencing. For example, if the mother takes heroin during her pregnancy, it will pass to the baby through her bloodstream. Due to this, the baby will be addicted to heroin when he is born and will have trouble with withdrawal symptoms. Taking heroin while pregnant also increases the chances of premature birth or stillbirth.
6. HIV/AIDS
Mothers who have HIV can pass it on to their unborn babies. If she doesn’t pass it to her child during pregnancy, the child can still contract it via breastfeeding or exchange of body fluids.
7. Mutations
Mutations usually occur when DNA splices itself and comes back together in a slightly different form. Mutations are influenced by the parent’s genes; if the mother has a mutation, it might straighten out in the child or might manifest the same way.
8. Hashimoto’s Disease
This disease happens when the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid. Hashimoto’s disease is often passed down from the mother or someone in her family tree. If a mother has some thyroid issues or Hashimoto’s, the children need to be checked as well.
9. Hair Type and Colour
Dominant and recessive genes play a huge role in determining hair colour and type. There is more chance that the baby will inherit the mother’s dominant gene for hair colour and texture.
10. Huntington’s Disease
This is a very serious disorder which causes a slow breakdown of the nervous system. It gets transferred from mother to child, and there is no real cure. The only prevention is to make sure never to take in any toxins during pregnancy.
List of Traits which are Inherited from Father
Below is a list of traits inherited from father to child:
1. Eye Colour
Dominant and recessive genes play a role in determining eye colour of the child. Dark colour eyes are dominant and light coloured eyes are recessive. The baby can have the father’s eyes if they are the dominant colour between both the parents.
2. Height
If the father is tall, there is more chance for the child to also be tall. If the mother is short, the child may grow to be the same height as her. It just depends on the genetics of both parents.
3. Dimples
Dimples can be a trait that babies inherit from their fathers, as it is a dominant trait. It is categorised as a facial deformity but looks adorable on anyone and everyone.
4. Fingerprints
No two human’s fingerprints are the same, and even children will not share fingerprints with either parent. But among the genetic traits inherited from father, the genetic component of fingerprints is most definitely included. Fingerprint patterns between the father and child may not be identical, but extremely similar.
5. Lips
When it comes to lip structure and size of the baby, the father’s genes come into play. Full lips are a dominant trait which the baby can be born with if his father has the same.
6. Sneezing
This has a name, the ‘Achoo’ syndrome – sneezing when someone looks directly into bright light. If the father has this syndrome, then the baby will also exhibit it as it is a dominant genetic trait.
7. Teeth structure
Among the physical traits inherited from father, teeth structure is hereditary. There is a gene which determines the gap which comes between teeth. If the father has a gap tooth, it is very likely the baby will have as well.
8. Mental disorders
Both parents can pass on mental health issues to their children, but studies show that if the father is older and has a mental disorder like schizophrenia or ADHD, it can be passed on to the child as well.
9. Heart problems
Babies can inherit a gene from their fathers who can increase the risk of coronary heart disease. This is due to the unique genetic makeup of a father who has that gene.
10. Infertility
Studies show that men who have low sperm count and have gotten in-vitro fertilisation can pass their infertility trait to their sons. Recent research has stated that infertility is among genetic traits inherited from father.
Parents might worry about their children inheriting the same genetic disorders as them. Educating yourself about your family history health is a good step before deciding to have children. Using this information, you can check for any red flags or see what options are available to discuss with your doctor.

Coconut Milk for Babies - Benefits and Recipe
Creamy in texture and rich in taste, this drink is a favourite among the South East Asians, and many dishes are incomplete without it. As far as your baby is concerned, yes, you may give your child coconut milk as there are several benefits associated with it. However, make sure that you don’t give this as a substitute for your breast milk, as it does not have most of the nutrients that your baby gets from breast milk.
What is Coconut Milk?
Quite contrary to popular belief, coconut milk is not technically “milk”. Even though it has the colour and texture of milk, this drink is a mixture of coconut water and coconut pulp. The pulp or meat of the coconut is grated, boiled, and then squeezed, till the coconut milk is extracted.
Is Coconut Milk Good for Babies?
Coconut milk is rich in nutrients. It mostly contains fats that are good for the body. Babies need essential fats for brain development, insulation, and for the benefit of their skin. Coconut milk also contains several vitamins and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, vitamin C and E. All these nutrients are highly beneficial in maintaining your baby’s good health, development, and boosting immunity. Coconut milk also has a cooling effect on the body, and this is why doctors recommend this drink during the summer.

Health Benefits of Coconut Milk for Babies
Here’s why you must consider including coconut milk in your little one’s diet -
1. A Rich Source of Essential Fats
Coconut milk has high-fat content, and these fats are the good kind—saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated. All of this helps with the development of the brain, and your baby needs this, as, during infancy, the brain is constantly developing at a rapid pace.
2. Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins and minerals are necessary for your baby’s overall development, and coconut milk is chockfull of exactly that. Potassium and sodium work together to help in maintaining blood pressure. Vitamin C plays a vital role in the repair and development of tissues and red blood cells. It helps boost immunity as well. Vitamin E keeps the toxins at bay, by working as an antioxidant.
3. Works As an Antimicrobial
An antimicrobial can help protect your body from bacteria, virus, and germs by fighting it, and coconut milk work as an excellent antimicrobial. Coconut water is a part of the milk, and this water contains lipids that can help ward off antibodies.
4. An Alternative to Cow/Goat milk
Some babies are lactose intolerant and therefore allergic to cow or goat milk. Coconut milk works as an excellent replacement. However, coconut is a potential allergen, and while a lactose intolerant child can consume coconut milk, the possibility of another type of allergy is not completely ruled out, though coconut milk allergy in babies is rare.
5. Help kill Worms in the Intestine
A lot of doctors recommend coconut milk to de-worm your child. Children are prone to intestinal worms. Coconut milk contains antimicrobial lipids, capric acid, and lauric acid, that can kill these worms and boost the immunity of your child as well.
Can You Give Coconut Milk as an Alternative to Breastmilk or Formula?
Coconut milk has several health benefits, but it is not enough for your baby as a replacement for breast milk or formula; here’s why –
1. Not Enough Protein Content
Proteins are necessary for the development and repair of muscles and tissues in the body. A baby needs a minimum of 11 grams of protein each day, and a measure of 100 grams of coconut milk gives you only about 2 grams of protein. This clearly isn’t enough for your baby.
2. Not Enough Calcium Content
Calcium is required for the development of bones and teeth, and coconut milk has barely 10% of the necessary calcium content that your child needs.
3. Can Suppress Your Baby’s Appetite
Coconut milk is rich in essential fats and calories, and this can make your baby feel full for a few hours, without really providing enough nutrients that your baby requires. Since the baby’s tummy is full, he will refuse to consume breastmilk or food for a few hours.
How to Introduce Coconut Milk in Your Infant’s Diet?
Your baby can start having coconut milk once he is around eight months or when he has started consuming solid foods. The first time you give your baby coconut milk, start by just a couple of spoons, in case he has an allergic reaction to it. You can then start by using coconut milk instead of cow or goat milk for mixing your baby’s formula. You can add coconut milk to boiled and mashed rice or potato, with a little bit of sugar for some sweetness. However, too much sugar can cause dental problems, so limit it to about half a teaspoon. You can also make milkshakes with coconut milk and fruits like strawberries, mangoes, and bananas. Coconut milk and baby food recipes are a favourite these days, as coconut milk has a rich, creamy, and slightly sweet taste that most babies love.
How to Make Coconut Milk at Home?
You do get coconut milk at the stores, but it is better to make it at home because this way you’ll be sure that your baby is not consuming preservatives. Here’s how you make fresh coconut milk for your baby at home –
Ingredients
One fresh dehusked coconut
Warm water
Coconut water
Method
Break the coconut, and collect the coconut water in a bowl, and keep this aside
Grate the dehusked coconut and then boil it with some warm water.
Mix the coconut water with the boiled coconut pulp or meat, and grind it till it forms a thick paste.
Pour this paste/puree into a clean muslin cloth and squeeze it.
Collect the coconut milk in a clean bowl and leave it to cool.
From working as an antimicrobial to having a cooling effect on your body coconut milk takes the prize for a great health drink. So, go ahead and introduce your baby to this delicious beverage.

Indian Mom's Empty Nest - Bringing Up My Baby Each Day!
With a busy schedule and daily routine, we sometimes miss out on the most elaborate happenings around us every day. One of them being, our little ones growing up. Somewhere in our minds change is never a constant, especially when it comes to our children. We keep nudging reality and believe change will happen, but eventually. But with each new experience with my toddler I am learning I am so wrong.
A small teaser of my son growing up equipped with individual thoughts and feelings was thrown at me while I was sneaking out to work this morning. Amidst my daily attempt of slipping out to work, while my little one is diverted by my mom or dad, I heard my little one scream out a ‘Bye Mumma.’ It was a simple and subtle stop to all my morning drama. It was like him telling me, "Oh come on ma! I will see you in the evening, now stop all the drama please."
I remember standing there in the moment both shocked and surprised as to how so often we underestimate the smartness of our little ones. How we just ignore the fact that they might be growing up to be wiser every new day. All the way to my work the one thought I could not omit from my mind was the clarity with which my little one had accepted the fact that his mom had to leave for work with no excuses attached. Trust a mother’s heart that though at one point is proud that her child is getting smarter on the other side sulks thinking he may not need her as much anymore.
We often read about the ‘Empty nest’ syndrome hitting moms as their kids go to college or join work in another city. But I would like to differ. I think for a mother the nest gets emptied at a certain level with every little milestone of her child. I am all for instilling independence in children from a small age, but there are no two ways to a mother’ heart and an Indian mother’s heart at that.
Right from the time her little one leaves the crib, or shifts to another bed and room, the first time she drops him at pre-school, his first trip, excursion, night stay away from her, the idea of her child needing her a little less than before is slightly traumatic. As a mother, I think I now know the reason behind my mother’s abrupt calls during my college years, shopping sprees and even birthdays where she had to be the first one to wish me.What annoyed me a little back then makes so much more sense today. So here’s to all mothers who are bringing up their babies, hug them a little extra, tell them an extra story, spend a few more minutes with them in the park or get them to talk a little more about their day. Because no matter how much time you are spending with them each day, time with them is running out. And it might just soon be time for the nest to be empty.

10 Must-have Herbs to Grow at Home
Ask any culinary enthusiast what makes or breaks a dish and they will tell you that it's all on the herbs, spices and seasonings to do that! The combination of herbs especially can alter the perception of a dish greatly. While dried herbs carry distinct flavours and can be store-bought, fresh herbs are harder to keep in the kitchen. This is why growing some herbs in a small vegetable garden in your home can change your life.
List of 10 Easy Herbs to Grow Indoors
Herbs aren’t just seasonings for flavour, they carry numerous benefits. They can be used for anything, from antiseptic purposes to lowering blood pressure. This is why you should find some medicinal herbs to grow at home, such as tulsi. Here are some other useful herbs to grow in your kitchen.
1. Parsley
When you think of what herbs to grow at home, parsley usually tops the list. This herb grows into a large bushy plant and is packed with Vitamins C and A. It is used commonly in Italian, Greek and Indian cuisine and is a great garnish to top dishes with. It can have a mildly bitter flavour that adds depth to any dish.
2. Rosemary
A fan favourite for those who enjoy Italian and Spanish cuisine, rosemary is an extremely aromatic plant that acts as a seasoning herb for anything from red meats to poultry and vegetables. Be careful while using this herb though as it can have a distinct and powerful flavour and fragrance. While the plant is known to have blood purifying properties, if used too much, it can increase your blood pressure. So, use it with care.
3. Basil
Another fragrant herb used to add zest and flavour to dishes around the world but particularly in India and Italy, basil can be grown anywhere. It has a variety of uses in cuisines that range from stand-alone dishes like salads to sauces for pizzas. It is also the primary ingredient for pesto.
4. Coriander
Coriander is one of the most commonly used garnish herbs in the world. It has a distinct flavour profile that adds a refreshing crunch to any dish you add it to. In Vietnam, it’s commonly used to garnish noodle soup dishes like pho. In India, it is used as a garnish for various dishes including biryani. The reason this herb is used so often across the culinary spectrum is because of its subtlety in taste, and how well it pairs with a lot of dishes.
5. Thyme
When you consider that entire cuisines depend on the use of thyme, it’s no surprise why you have to grow this herb at home. This herb is the foundation of flavour in Mediterranean cuisine. It is also commonly used to flavour dishes from the south of Italy and Spain. The beauty of thyme is that it has a subtle but very noticeable flavour profile. Thyme is commonly used to help get rid of inflammation.
6. Mint
In India, mint is considered to be the king of herbs. It has a powerful flavour profile and is packed with nutritional value. It can be used as a garnish, as a seasoning or even used to make tea. Mint is considered to be one of the most beneficial herbs in the world, in terms of the health benefits it provides, and it has anti-inflammatory properties and is packed with antioxidants. It should be on the top of your list of kitchen herbs to grow indoors.
7. Dill
Dill is considered the crown jewel of seasoning herbs. It brings out the flavour immensely in lamb and beef dishes, can be used for fish and also makes for great seasoning for a yoghurt dip. It also helps ease stomach cramps and swelling in the body.
8. Sage
Sage is one of the best herbs to grow at home due to its various medicinal and general health properties. It can improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and give you a burst of flavour in any dish you add it to. It also helps cure cuts on the skin.
9. Chamomile
There are few herbs in the world that work to calm the mind and refresh the soul as chamomile does. This flowering herb is famously used for tea around the world and is actually quite easy to grow at home. It also has prebiotics and probiotics and is great for settling the stomach and improving digestion. It reduces inflammation and even treats fevers.
10. Fennel
This flavorful and fragrant herb is a must-have just because it has different flavours depending on how it is used. The flavour of fennel changes greatly when sautéed, grilled, boiled or eaten raw. If rosemary and thyme are the base of cuisines, fennel is often considered the thread that ties a dish together. Fennel is also great due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Important Tips to Consider While Growing Herbs at Home
The first step to having a herb garden at home is learning how to grow herbs at home. Here are a few tips:
Most herbs should only be watered once a day; with rosemary, however, you can water it twice a day.
When growing herbs at home in pots, ensure you understand how the plant grows and buy the right- sized pot.
Some herbs need a lot of sunlight, so if you're growing them indoors, ensure they are placed at a window which has access to the sun.
It is always better to plant herbs like sage, basil and rosemary in the ground outside as they can become large bushes.
Growing herbs can be a great cost-saving measure that adds a punch to your dishes while keeping you and your family healthy. To understand what herbs can be of use to you specifically, talk to your nutritionist. If you have an allergic reaction to any herbs, don’t plant them at home. Please be careful and aware while planting these herbs as well.

Rashes! A Big Concern. Say No to Rashes Forever and Be a Super Mom.
The first concern of any new mother is how to protect their newborn from diaper rashes(quite obvious as a new mother you want your baby to be happy always).
In this concern new mother end up using cloth nappies for babies which is also a good option but nowadays diapers are also considered equally good.
Indeed it is a topic of concern and is extremely painful for the newborn who gets rashes frequently.
But some of the tips mentioned below can help one to get rid of rashes forever.
Use good quality diaper and the one which is fitting and suiting the baby well (don’t buy local brands or non trusted brands as it can contain harmful chemicals and can hurt baby’s cute little bums)
Change the diaper immediately if you sense it’s soiled or urinated (don’t wait for hours to change the diaper. At night you can avoid changing the diaper until it’s soiled)
Now while changing the diaper make sure you clean the area well with baby wipes or with warm water using cotton.
Now allow the area to dry completely. This you can check using an organic tissue paper as well (I personally do this for my baby).
Once the area dries completely apply virgin coconut oil ( better than rash creams) on the sides and area where baby gets rashes often.
Make sure you apply with oil or cream with clean and washed hands or use cotton balls for the same.
Now place the new diaper and check if the sides are bit loose and baby is comfortable.
Note: To avoid rashes first try to purchases all the different brands of diaper available in the market and a size bigger. Check which one is suiting the baby best and keep using the same brand so that baby is comfortable and happy wearing them.
Believe it or not, the above-mentioned steps will not only heal the rashes but also will say goodbye to rashes forever.
