Mumps in Pregnancy - Should You Be Concerned?
Mumps is an infection which is generally observed in children. But it may also affect a pregnant woman in the early stages of her pregnancy. If this infection is left unattended, it may lead to severe complications. Although the first infection usually imparts an immunity for life within the body, it is best not contracted when you are pregnant.
What Is Mumps?
Mumps is an infection that manifests in the body in the form of swelling of the glands that make saliva, causing immense pain. In certain cases, various other areas of the body may undergo swelling and inflammation as well.
What Causes Mumps?
Mumps is caused by the paramyxovirus. It easily spreads by airborne droplets of infected saliva. It may spread when a contaminated person coughs or sneezes thereby releasing the pathogens in the air. Anyone coming in contact with these pathogens can easily get infected.
How Common Is Mumps in Pregnant Women?
In recent years, the instances of mumps have reduced drastically since most people have been vaccinated against it via the triple MMR vaccine. As for pregnant women being infected with mumps, the chances of it happening are barely 1 in 1000.
Who Is At the Risk of Getting Mumps during Pregnancy?
Mumps exposure in pregnancy is not a given. Most women would have had the MMR vaccine when they were young, and hence may have the required immunity to protect themselves from it. Even if the vaccine has not been administered, contracting mumps earlier in life does develop an immunity for it. An absence of either case can put a pregnant woman at a high risk of contracting mumps, especially if she comes in contact with a person who has mumps in the first place.
Is Mumps Contagious?
Mumps is extremely contagious and can spread from one person to another quite easily. An infected person sneezing or coughing can expel the pathogens in the air. At the same time, coming in close contact with the person or using any common objects can further make it easier to be infected.
Signs and Symptoms of Mumps
Not all people necessarily show any specific signs of mumps until it reaches a severe stage. Most of the other symptoms can be easily recognised.
It initially starts with a fever and headache, followed by pain in the neck, abdomen, and the back.
In case of men, there are chances of mumps resulting in orchitis, which is the term used to describe a painful swelling of the testicles. This usually occurs a week following the painful swelling of the neck, but rarely affects fertility in any way.
For women, oophoritis is a possibility due to mumps where the ovaries undergo inflammation, which is painful but does not affect fertility.
In extremely rare cases, people have suffered from a brain infection due to mumps or have had a substantial loss in hearing as a result of it.
What Are the Complications of Mumps during Pregnancy?
The effect of mumps in pregnancy is two-fold since there is a chance of it affecting the mother as well as the child.
Risks for Mother
A pregnant woman who has mumps is at a risk of developing swelling in the ovaries as well as in the different parts of the breasts. The severity of the infection is the same as that of any other individual, as fever and headache might make the pregnancy difficult.
Risks for Baby
Contracting mumps in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy has been considered to increase the risk of miscarriage for the foetus. But there is no link between mumps and birth defects in a child as it rarely enters the baby even if it is present in the placenta.
How Is Mumps Treated While Pregnant?
The right way to treat mumps is by administering the triple MMR vaccine early in life, but it should be avoided if you are pregnant. Conception should proceed only after a couple of months following the vaccination. Taking ample rest and following a diet rich in soups and fluids can provide relief from the painful swelling.
Contracting mumps in the second trimester of pregnancy is not as risky as compared to contracting in the first 12 weeks. Most women are already vaccinated against mumps, it works in your interest to be aware of the signs and keep away from people who might have any symptoms of mumps.

Difference between Parental Discipline and Discrimination
Refusing to put away your adoptive little one's toys, after he has left the mess post-play is not discrimination it is called disciplining the child.
Any child, adopted or not, old or young, girl or boy, has been through this disciplining phase. And it is an important part in the development of any child, both emotional and physiological.
At the outset, let us understand the difference between disciplining and punishment. Punishment is a reactive method of showing the child the right path – it is undertaken once the child has committed a mistake.
However, discipline is more pre-emptive. It is about setting the guidelines for the child beforehand, and also clearly stating the repercussions of doing it incorrectly.
The reason for stating this clarification is to highlight that disciplining your little one can never be discriminatory, simply since you are trying to show her the right path. However, punishment can.
Here are some tips by which you can ensure that your disciplining is not seen as discriminatory.
Keep The Rules Same for All Kids during Play Dates
As a parent, you definitely have realistic rules laid out for your kids, adoptive or otherwise, at home. When you plan play dates with their mates at your place, make sure you go over the same with all of them. When your kids see that the others have accepted it easily enough, they will know that the rules remain the same across families.
You may want to speak to the parents of the other kids to ensure you are all in agreement as far as the rules go, so that no disparate view comes up in the kids’ private conversation.
Develop A Confidante in Her School, Preferably Her Teacher
Your little one’s teacher or playschool instructor is the only outsider who spends a considerable amount of time with her on a consistent basis. So, take her into confidence with your doubts. She may be able to help you by dropping some hints at school – questioning everybody about rules at home regarding toys, or reinforcing the rules at school. She could also tell you if she finds any of the rules laid down by you are age-inappropriate for a child.
The Rules Remain The Same for All Kids in The House
Make sure that rules remain the same for all kids in the house, then be it visitors or siblings. There cannot be two sets of rules among children, unless it involves safety of one child. And in that case, make your reasons amply clear to both of them, so as to avoid any ugly confrontations later.
Set Aside Time to Be Spent with Each Child Every Day
No matter how busy you are, or how tiring the day may have been, be sure to set aside time for each of your children, so that you may discuss the day with them or take up any pending issues that only the two of you need be privy to. Matters of discipline may be brought up during this time.
Do Not Admonish Your Kids in Front of Others
This is a strict no-no. Any displeasure should be aired, only once you are back home, and where you are both given the opportunity to express yourselves. Sometimes, what seems like bad behaviour to us can be a reaction to something equally terrible or even worse behavior on your part.
However, in our quest to behave as the perfect parents with perfectly-mannered kids, we refuse to hear our kid’s side of the story. Disciplining can be a very positive experience for the children when undertaken with the right levels of dialogue between parent and child. Read more

A lesson life taught about the occurrence is worth sharing.....
.
We had been recently transferred to this place. This new place was a small town. The pride of the town is a hill owning a height of around five hundred feet. The hill crowns a fort on its top which is a kind of tourist spot. Even so, being at a distance from the city the town had a lifestyle of a village.
We moved to the new but rented apartment. The flat was constructed in such a way that the view from the hall, kitchen, and one of the bedrooms was this majestic hill which at the few first views was very captivating. There was no obstruction for the view, air, and sunlight as most dwelling places were individual houses. Even so, being previously attached to the city-style life, I was finding it arduous to get acquainted with this new way of living. Every day I would look at the hill. People would be climbing it. sometimes I find some goats being up there. But I never find the hill being standing alone or being deprived of any company. I always wondered how much time it might be taking people to reach the fort. But I have no memory of my strong inclination to climb it.
As mother nature changes her look, the hill would robe itself accordingly. I would watch it on full moon nights when the moon would rise behind the fort. In the time of sunset, the crimson red sky behind the hill would be picturesque. On rainy days the white cloud-covered hill would be enough to bring the feeling of any hill station vacation. In winter the fog would cover it like a aureole. Gradually I had constant nascent thoughts about how everything might be looking from such a great height. Would the moon look a little bigger or how the queen would be experiencing up there in all seasons. I would often say that I wanted to be there at the top but I never really could believe that actually, I would be there someday. I had my restrictions. My daughter was three years old and was completely dependent on me. we would have our parents with us but only for some time as we were far from our native place.
So one day I planned to get a closer look at the hill. It was just one kilometre away from my home. I've always had its view from outside. We reached there. having some heritage values, the hill is being taken care of by the govt. Reaching there I came to know that the visiting time was over. So we could not get tickets for ourselves but the guard allowed us to be there at the foot of the hill. It was really enjoyable. The area was quite large. There were stairs for going up. my daughter urged me to go up but I convinced her we would come next time because that day's time for the visit was over. She understood and we returned from there.
Next Sunday we again reached there but a little early. I always get water bottle and snacks for my daughter but never got prepared for ourselves because in my wildest dreams I never believed that we were going to climb up there. This time we got tickets and we started climbing stairs. My daughter with her father was climbing ahead of me. she was so excited that she would not look back.
“Let's go. We have climbed enough.” I said.
“No, mama. Let's climb.” She would reply.
Her father would suggest going a little up and then to return. I was getting it difficult to breathe under the mask. So occasionally they would remove it but the father-daughter duo not for a second would remove the mask. This way all of us climbed up to three fourth of the height. At this height, the hill had a large plain surface where one can rest for some time. The breeze was cool and the view of the city from the top was impressive. There was a lotus pond in the way where the road lies ahead for the fort. We took a rest there. my daughter had some snacks and water there. there was no source of any food or beverage up there. also, the number of visitors was very few. My daughter was the youngest visitor among all. Still, she was insisting to go up there. Her father was a little hesitant considering she was too young to climb such a height. But ultimately he agreed. He decided to carry her and march ahead. The fort was not very far. It was closer than the distance we had already covered. But the road was steep. Somehow we managed to reach there. It was dusk and the sun was in preparation to leave. When we reached there, we felt it was very worth coming. At the same time, we also realized that it was our daughter for which we were at the top. The reason I was considering a limitation was the reason behind liberation.
Life always works mysteriously. Sometimes when we least expect something, things happen. The mechanism of the universe is beyond human imagination. All I did was cultivate a desire and wish it to happen. The rest was taken care of.
