How to Control Your Anger Towards Your Kids - 10 Anger Management Techniques for Parents
Anger is a natural human emotion. As a parent, there are numerous instances where you feel that your kids are not in control and you feel angry with them. More often than not, parents lash out at their kids in a fit of anger. This is not ideal because, in the spur of the moment, you may say things which you cannot take back later on and feel regretful. It can have a long-lasting negative impact on the children in the long run. Even suppressing anger can lead to problems like frustration and depression in the long run. The key is to understand how to control your anger and channel it healthily rather than suppressing it.
Why is Anger Management Important for Parents?
Although anger is a natural emotion, expressing it by yelling at your kids or anyone, for that matter, is not. Yelling can give birth to very negative feelings in your relationship with your children and even your partner. Lack of anger management would also make you seem like a less approachable person. Anger management helps you as a parent to channel the anger that you feel in a healthy manner. It also helps in letting your children know that you are angry with them, without completely scaring them. This, in turn, can help your children in realizing where they might have gone wrong. Hence, channelling your anger can also impart a more effective lesson to your children than just losing your temper and creating a tense scene.
How Can Your Anger Affect Your Child's Growth?
As discussed above, there are a lot of negative effects of anger on your children’s growth. Firstly, this would create a dent in the relationship you share with your kids and your partner. Secondly, due to the fear of getting scolded, your children can start hiding things from you. This can be a grave issue in the future, where you may not be able to provide help to your children when they actually need it.
Thirdly, every outburst you have affects the personality of your children - angry parents will make the children grow into either extremely subdued personalities or extremely angry people. Both are not good personality types for your child to develop. Physically expressing anger can also cause permanent physical and emotional injury to your child as well.
Recognising Your Signs of Anger
The first important step towards controlling your anger is to understand the signs of anger that your body is showing. Once you become aware that your body is showing one or a combination of these signs, you can be aware that there is a chance that you may explode out of anger. This should be your signal to stop feeling angry and to try to calm down before you react negatively to these stimuli and make things worse. Here are some of the signs that your body shows when you start feeling angry:
You start breathing rapidly.
Your heart starts pounding really fast.
You start getting negative thoughts, such as there is no one to support you and so on.
You clench your jaws and your palms.
Your shoulders start getting tense.
Your stomach starts churning.
You start feeling irritated and sweat a lot.
When these signs start surfacing, hit the pause button and calm yourself down for your sake and the sake of your children and spouse.
Anger Management Ideas for Parents
It is very necessary to follow some good life-hacks on how to handle feeling angry with your children. You can follow these simple yet effective ideas for keeping your anger in control:
1. Take a Few Deep Breaths
One of the most effective ways to control any form of anger is to take deep breaths. When you breathe in and breathe out, it helps you contemplate and think before you act. Since reacting to anger is mostly impulsive, breathing deeply helps in curbing your impulses and keeping your anger in check. Breathing also helps you take some time out to think about how to channel your anger effectively, so that your children learn the lesson they need to learn. This will also create a positive impact on your children as they learn from you to breathe and think before they react impulsively to a difficult situation thrown at them in the future.
2. Seek Counselling for Anger Management
It is never a bad idea to ask for an expert’s help whenever you are having a problem in life. Reaching out for help is the first sign towards improving a problem, which starts with you admitting that you have a problem. Good therapy can help you in a lot of ways. Your problems feel simpler and burdens, lighter, when they are heard by someone, without any opinion or judgement. A good therapist can help you in this regard by listening to your problems and suggesting changes from an unbiased point of view.
3. Do Not Hit or Resort to Violence
One of the most natural responses to anger, as Indian parents, is to hit children to discipline them. This kind of punishment has an extremely adverse effect on the children, affecting their confidence and personality. Moreover, this depletes the relationship capital that parents have with their children like nothing else. When you preach to your kids not to resort to violence, then it is not a good example you set by using violence on your own kids.
4. Picture How Your Relationship with Your Child will Look Like in the Future
When you get angry with your children, it is extremely important to take a moment to draw a mental picture of how your relationship with your children will look like 20 years down the line. It is very important to think about whether such aggression would help in strengthening or weakening your relationship with your children when they grow up. Looking at things from this viewpoint helps in controlling your anger efficiently and handling the situation wisely.
5. Choose the Right Place and the Right Time to Channel Your Anger, if Needed
Shouting, punishing and yelling at kids in public affects their confidence and people skills adversely. This can completely make them rebellious or socially awkward in certain conditions when they grow up. Choosing to show your anger towards your child at the right time and place, if it is very necessary, helps the kids understand the importance of how to behave in public and not to create a scene.
6. Identify What Triggers You
Introspecting on the root cause behind what sets you off will help you in identifying such situations well in advance. When you are aware of what can make you angry well in advance, you can prepare towards creating counter-measures for the same. Moreover, this helps you in identifying your own weak points and helps you work towards improving it. This move towards self-realisation can be a valuable tool.
7. Never Judge Your Children
Judging your children plants a perception of themselves in the children’s minds. This is especially because, for the children, you are their ultimate role model. When you judge your kids based on their behaviour at a certain point of time, it influences them in an extremely adverse manner. Think of this being analogous to this situation - your boss and your biggest mentor telling you that you are an average professional and do not have a lot of potential. You will be heartbroken, won’t you? Moreover, you will start accepting it to be true in the back of your mind. No matter what, you should keep inspiring your children to do good without judgments.
8. Keep Some Slogans and Recite Them
When you feel that your temper is rising, keep a few slogans like “stop”, “calm down”, “control yourself”, “it's not important to get angry” etc., handy. Recite them in your mind to try to calm yourself down. This can help you with a sudden surge of anger. Once again, reason can prevail over your impulsive reaction to anger if you create habits to calm yourself down, such as reciting a slogan repeatedly when you feel angry.
9. Meditate to Find More Peace
Meditating works wonders not just in controlling your anger, but also, in helping with self-realisation and self-improvement in the long run. If you have more control over your thoughts and are more self-aware, you can detect the situations that can make you angry more efficiently. This can help you work towards improving your anger issues and make your life and your children’s life happier.
10. Hug Your Child
A hug can work wonders where thousands of strong words can have no impact. A hug is the strongest form of non-verbal communication to show your children that you care for them. When you hug your child when they irritate you, it can help them think about their mistakes and work towards correcting it. All lessons can be learned without any angry words being spoken. This also strengthens your bond with your child. Not a bad deal, is it?
Your children’s minds are like soft sponges that absorb anything that is in their environment. Expressing anger towards them can cause a lot of damage to them, in terms of their personality, their confidence levels, and their personal growth in general. Although it is necessary at times to express your anger, many times it is more effective not to do so and to control it instead.

Dreaming About Being Pregnant – Reasons & Truth
Dreams guide us into a world of amusing images that reflects our aspirations, realities of life and past experiences. However, dreaming about being pregnant is a very 'unusual' feeling as it disturbs people sometimes. Waking up to a dream of being pregnant can leave you wondering for the entire day as to how and why such a dream occurred in the first place.
Pregnancy Dreams and What They Mean
Pregnancy dreams most likely occur due to subconscious thinking about motherhood and the good things associated with it. Many women who come across pregnant women or regularly interact with them tend to register pregnancy in their subconscious mind. Also, if there is an intention of getting pregnant, then the mind conspires to create pregnancy dreams. Some pregnant women very often have dreams about giving birth as they think about the delivery and the post-partum period regularly.
Beyond this, many pregnancy dreams that both men and women get can indicate underlying emotions such as stress, desire for change, feeling of loneliness, expression of creativity etc. If the dreams repeat often, it is better to consult a dream analyst to understand the emotion behind it.
Am I Really Pregnant?
People often tell their friends ‘I had a dream I was pregnant’, even when they are not pregnant. This is because pregnancy dreams are just an instinctive reflection of the things surrounding them, it usually does not have a connection to the physical changes in the body. However, people waiting for a pregnancy test report and dream about being pregnant have often gotten a positive pregnancy report. The mental frame of mind sometimes matches the reality, subconsciously.
6 Reasons You Are Dreaming About Pregnancy
Dreams are multi-layered and below are some of the reasons behind why people dream about having a baby.
1. A Feeling of Neglect:
Since women who get pregnant are revered and respected in most of the cultures around the world, people who suffer from neglect or loneliness satisfy their emotional needs by dreaming about being pregnant. Many societies set motherhood as a yardstick for respect and social acceptance. People who have constantly faced neglect owing to issues such as emotional abandonment by the family tend to imagine themselves as being pregnant. This is because they assume it will fetch them acceptance. Dreams arise as a reflection of this thought in their minds.
2. Metaphorically Indicating Change:
Creation of a new life is the beauty of pregnancy. It is no mean feat to make a baby and dreaming about having a baby symbolises a change or a new beginning in life which you may be expecting or experiencing.
3. Reflection of Stress:
Pregnancy dreams could indicate a state of stress or anxiety. When a person is overloaded with work, he or she dreams of having a baby. This is a way of projecting the fear of the mind on taking additional responsibilities, as raising a baby is perceived as a stressful job.
4. You Want to Embrace Motherhood:
Women who have been planning to have a baby often take it to heart and throw themselves into the idea of starting a family. Subconsciously, the thought of succeeding in it gives them dreams of being pregnant. When the physical and the mental changes happen in the sink, the dreams are considered as an auspicious sign.
5. Unchased Dreams:
Motherhood is synonymous to nurture and care. A dream of being pregnant can symbolise that there is a dream or idea that is not pursued, just like the foetus in the womb that needs attention and care. People who have a passion that they have buried in them due to the pressure of pursuing something socially acceptable, get such pregnancy dreams.
6. Sign of Prosperity:
Creation of something new is a sign of fertility and prosperity. Pregnancy dreams can symbolise the start of a good future or a way out of an already existing problem.
If you trying to understand what dreaming about being pregnant means to you, spend some time to introspect and analyze your current situation. Meditating is sure to help you find some answers too!
How Can You Avoid or Induce Dreams About Pregnancy
Avoiding a dream by not thinking about it is bound to shift the focus of the mind on it. The best way to avoid a pregnancy dream is first to analyze the reason behind having it repeatedly. If you are getting the dream of having a baby because you want to become a parent, then reassuring yourself with positive thoughts will help. Shifting the focus to what you have already created and taken care of can keep the mind away from those dreams.
If you want to induce a pregnancy dream then you must imagine, feel and enjoy the changes that pregnancy would bring to your body. Sub-consciously thinking about becoming a mother can reflect in having a pregnancy-related dream.
Cultural Symbolism of Being Pregnant in a Dream
Many cultures perceive dreams about pregnancy as a positive sign. It is seen as a symbol of growth, change and prosperity. Some cultures even believe it as an indication of getting pregnant in real life. It gives a woman immense happiness to wake up from a dream of pregnancy, as she feels fertile and blessed. This feeling is exactly reflected in the cultural symbolism also.
The Truth About Pregnancy Dreams
Often a dream about having a baby but not being pregnant is only reflective of the underlying mindset of the person. A simple analysis based on the dreamer’s circumstances can tell whether it is a negative or a positive indicator. However, in many cases, a pregnancy dream is a sign of something good and fertile.
Interpretation of dreams is an interesting subject, but it has no scientific backing. So go ahead and enjoy your dreams without taking the interpretations too seriously.

Significance of Play and Movement for Babies
Movement and play are as essential for your baby’s development, as regular feeds and sleep. Here are some tips to ensure that your little baby is active, and playing well for her age.
As parents, you cannot imagine skipping your baby’s feed time or compromising on her nap schedules, but one of the most commonly overlooked factors is your baby’s play time. Remember that keeping your baby active through age-appropriate movement and plays is crucial for her development. Here are some tips and play ideas which will help you ensure that you have this little active baby at home.
Why is Movement and Play So Important?
For your baby, her own body is as new to her as the world around. Playing is her way of testing out her body parts, as well as exploring the world around her. Each play session gives your baby a chance to learn something new. Research consistently proves that active play time has an positive impact on your baby’s social and intellectual skills. Movement is crucial for your baby’s physical development.
1. Physical Development
Play and movement will help your child develop her motor skills (fine and gross), as she will learn to use different parts of her body. Every time your baby waves her hand or kicks out, she is taking in information about how her body parts work in isolation, and together. While engaged in movements like rolling over, crawling or sucking, your baby is actually laying the foundation for her muscle development, which in future, will enable her to do multiple functions like spooning food into her mouth, kicking a ball, and so on.
2. Mental Development
Movement and play encourage your baby to use her mind and body together. It encourages her to think. For instance, a simple game of peek-a-boo will teach your baby that even if you disappear from her line of view, you are still there. Your baby learns how to solve problems using movements. For example, if she wants a toy which is out of her reach, she rolls over or crawls towards the toy and grabs it.
How can you Help your Baby Move and Play?
Movement and play are a natural instincts in your child’s development, and it need not involve expensive toys. Your presence and time is more valuable to your baby than any expensive gadget or toy.
Free Play on The Floor
Playing on the floor helps the baby to work on her posture that will later help her sit erect. It will also help her strengthen her muscles which will make activities like crawling, rolling over, etc. easier for her to do. Place your baby on a warm and comfortable mat and encourage her to move. For instance, you could show her, her favourite toy, and keep it just out of her reach so that she will be tempted to grab it. Never force movements that your child may not be ready for. Also, never leave a child unattended. For babies, lying on their tummies for shorter periods of time is beneficial as it helps to strengthen their backs. Most babies dislike this position, so help your baby by distracting her, or getting down to her level so that she feels comforted. You can keep some appropriate music in the background and move your hands in tune to the song, while making facial expressions to go with it. Show her colorful pictures and dangling toys to encourage her eye movement. This will also be a good exercise for her eyes. If your baby is above 6 months, you can give her toys of different sizes and textures (keeping in mind that they are age-appropriate) and encourage her to touch and feel them. This will encourage your baby to start using her fingers to hold objects. Help your baby to move her body, or to crawl by making interesting spaces like a cardboard tunnel for her to crawl through. Make sure you let the baby lift her body up, and eventually stand up. You can give her a hand to lift her body up if she wants to get something on the sofa, rather than physically lifting her. Make sure you have durable furniture for her to hold while she tries to lift her body up.
Use every opportunity possible to cuddle your baby and express your love. With even a simple peek-a-boo, your baby may kick out or wriggle her hands in response. Get involved in her play as much as possible and cherish her early play adventures. Read more
