Traces of Dreaded Polio Type 2 Virus Found in Polio Vaccines: Experts Recommend Caution
When India was declared polio-free in the year 2014, the country heaved a collective sigh of relief. Which is exactly why the resurgence of the Polio type 2 virus in certain parts of the country is worrisome, to say the least.
As has been reported in the past couple of days, traces of the virus were found in a sample of sewage from Kurla, Mumbai, in the month of August. Soon after, a case was reported in Uttar Pradesh where a child tested positive for the same strain of the virus. Health ministry officials have also confirmed that some vials of the oral polio vaccines (OPV) were administered to a few children in the states of Maharashtra, Telengana, and Uttar Pradesh.
The vials were manufactured and distributed by a Ghaziabad-based pharmaceutical company called Biomed, which was in charge of supplying polio vaccines for immunisation programmes run by the government only. At the moment, the company has been banned from further supply and manufacture of these vaccines.
As per the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), children over 2 years of age received trivalent OPV as part of their routine immunisation, up until it was discontinued in 2016. Post this period, children have been receiving bivalent OPV along with doses of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). Given that the coverage of IPV is quite vast in India, it is unlikely that a spread of the Type 2 virus could cause much harm to the population.
Currently, polio surveillance teams in the above-mentioned states will ensure that the children who have been administered the vaccines are closely monitored for any symptoms. Health officials have also confirmed that the team is well-trained to identify any symptoms of polio and that the government is prepared for any eventuality, which offers some reassurance. Measures are also being taken to ensure the administration of IPV to all the children in the 3 affected states, to make sure no child is missed.
EXPERT SPEAK
We got in touch with Dr Arti Sharma (MBBS, MD, Paediatrics), who provided her take on the situation. She maintained that the necessary measures have been implemented to tackle the situation urgently, and that there is no reason to panic at the moment. Reiterating the stand taken by the IAP, she mentioned that the damage or spread of the virus would be quite limited. However, she recommended caution when it came to receiving further doses of the vaccine, until further instruction was provided by the authorities.
While the situation does seem scary at the moment, the government is taking all the possible measures to tackle this eventuality. We urge all caretakers and guardians to wait for further instructions from the concerned authorities with regard to following through with their child’s immunisation schedule.

Was It Love at First Sight When You First Saw Your Baby?
Did you fall in love with your baby before it was born? Did you really fall in love with your baby when you held him/ her for the first time? Was it love at first sight?
Yes ? Well, congratulations. You are amongst the mothers who are sorted. There is a baby! There is love at first sight. No confusion whatsoever.
Did I hear a No? It's alright, come on admit it. Even I had hesitated to admit it. But if you ask me, neither did I fall in love with my baby while he was in my womb nor did I fall in love with him when I first held him. No, you don't have to feel guilty about it. It's alright and perfectly normal not to be in love with your baby initially. Instead of feeling a ocean of love inside you, did you feel scared of that lil thing, were you overwhelmed with too much responsibility at once. Yes ? Let me tell you, It's alright and it's perfectly normal.Do not make yourself feel guilty about it.
Some of us are born mothers and some of us gradually become mothers. (By now u must have guessed which category I fall in ?) So mothers who are like me, listen up. We are no less, we love our babies equally or may be more but becoming a mother is a really overwhelming process (don't forget the pain and establishing breast feeding and changing diapers and sleepless nights and handling a tiny being and let's stop here before I scare my friends who are planning a baby while I'm writing this post). Hence that love overflow may not happen initially. When it does, you will end up loving your baby so much that your husband will take a backseat.
Honestly, I love my baby much more today than I loved him on Day 1. My love for him has been increasing everyday and I'm sure when I read this again after few years I will say to myself, I love him much more today than I loved him earlier.
Such is mother's love. it keeps growing everyday, minute and second (That's melodramatic. I told you some of us become mothers gradually).
Yours truly,
A sleep deprived mother

Does “Mother-ese” Speed Up or Delay Verbal Development?
You cannot help but want to coo back at your baby and indulge in some baby-talk - and that's normal! Your baby is probably the only person in the world you can be so silly with and they'll still think you are the most awesome person in the universe. But is your baby-talk or 'mother-ese' causing a slowing down of your baby's verbal development?
Baby talk is also referred to as mother-ese and is usually developed with a cooing pattern which is different from normal adult speech. Studies have shown that infants actually prefer to listen to this type of speech rather than standard adult directed speech. Such baby talk is not only important in creating an emotional bond between parents and the child, but it is also important in stimulating the language development centre in the brain.
Why Is Mother-ese an Important Aspect of Language Development?
There are lot of benefits of talking to an infant using motherese as a language pattern. Perhaps the most important benefit is that it stimulates the development of language in children. It has been proven that children who learn the fastest are those who receive most acknowledgement in a loving way from parents or caregivers. While talking to the baby using mother-ese, special attention and focus should be given to the child’s response.
Focusing on language development of your child is both about the quantity and quality of the words parents speak. It is important to note that this comes naturally to parents when they perceive babies as whole people – or able communicators ready to be informed about the happenings in their lives – and in turn share their thoughts and feelings. Comprehending this simple truth and interacting naturally will help the language development of your child exponentially.
So yes, Motherese definitely helps (not hurts) your baby! Here are a few tips to stimulate the language development of your child:
1. Use Your Authentic Voice
It is important to understand the difference between motherese and gibberish baby talk. Motherese means talking to your child in a way in which the words are stretched and intonated in a musical way. For e.g. instead of saying “good morning” we can say “gooouud morningggg”! It is extremely important to use your authentic tone and voice while just stretching the words a little bit.
2. Read Books and Tell Stories Responsively
Reading books responsively means reading with animated tones and actions. Let the baby stay on one page for five minutes and take in the pictures and words on the page while you are reading the story.
3. Relax, Be Patient and Do Not Test Your Child
When parents are worried or anxious, babies are able to sense those feelings. It is very important to create a conducive environment for your baby’s learning by feeling relaxed and being patient. What children need most of all to be able to start talking is the trust of parents and caregivers. When we test our children, we are not trusting them. As parents we are excited to test what our children have learnt and also show it to other family members. However, do remember that performance pressure makes toddlers more likely to clam up.
These strategies mentioned above help you engage with your baby and also encourage the language development of your child. Through practice, infants are able to determine who the positive and encouraging caregivers in their development are. When mother-ese is accepted and enjoyed by your child it expedites their language and cognitive development greatly. Read more

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much. But it is really very difficult to say anything without proper examination. It is advisable to get yourself evaluated by a doctor and follow doctors advise properly. You can also book online doctor’s appointment on FirstCry where the doctor can help you and guide you properly.

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
