1. Long Essay 1
Children’s Day or Baal Diwas is celebrated on the 14th of November, on the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Jawaharlal Nehru was a member of the Indian National Congress and was a part of the long freedom struggle against the British. Among other things, Nehru was known to be fond of children. He was a strong believer in children’s education, and would often say that children are the future leaders of the nation. He stressed on the importance of grooming children to be good citizens of the country, and a good education was the way to achieve it. He also believed that to build a progressive nation, children should be provided ample opportunities to learn and grow. He was also very popular with children, who would lovingly call him Chacha or Uncle Nehru. After his death in 1964, an official resolution was passed in the parliament to declare his birthday as Children’s Day, as a way to remember his dream and work towards realising it.
In an attempt to keep Chacha Nehru’s vision alive, many organisations across the country celebrate Children’s Day every year with immense enthusiasm. On November 14, several people and officials gather at the statue where Pandit Nehru was cremated and pay homage to him. In schools, teachers organise activities for children to commemorate the occasion. In some schools, the principal addresses the assembly with a speech on the importance of childhood and education. Teachers praise children and allow them free time during classes to play or do any activity they like. Some schools also organise cultural programmes that include a variety of fun activities. Some of these activities include dance and singing, plays and skits, sports competitions, essay and poem-writing competitions, debate competitions, etc. Schools often give students the freedom to wear colourful clothes instead of their uniforms on Children’s Day, which builds excitement in the air. Competitions are followed by prize distribution, and children are also given refreshments. These refreshments include snacks and finger food, along with sweets and beverages. Some schools organise fancy dress competitions where children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite characters and personalities.
The theme of these cultural programmes often revolves around the importance of education. Essay competitions focus on things like favourite memories with family, favourite games, or favourite TV show. From games to competitions and snacks, everything is organised keeping children’s happiness in mind.

It is a known fact that there are inequalities in our nation – several children are homeless, uneducated, and orphaned. Non-governmental organisations celebrate Children’s Day by organising drives and other activities where people can contribute to make the lives of underprivileged children better. Residential complexes take advantage of Children’s Day to encourage all the families living in the complex to get together and have fun. They also organise competitions and programmes and encourage children to participate in them. Occasions like Children’s Day are a great way for children to get to know other children in these spaces, and have fun.

Sleep Apnea in Infants: Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment
Parents need to be cautious when it comes to the health of their newborn. The first few months after birth are crucial, and so the parents need to look out for all signs about their baby’s health. The baby has important growth milestones in the first few months, and so, it is essential to ensure that their growth is not hindered. Acquiring awareness about a serious disorder called sleep apnea is essential as it requires careful observation and identification.
What is sleep apnea?
An interruption of breathing while sleeping is called sleep apnea. It is a potentially harmful condition and can cause serious complications when not treated at the right time. In infants, sleep apnea can lead to slow heart rate and poor growth. A partial interruption in breathing is called hypopneas whereas a complete pause in breathing is termed as apnea. Sleep apnea can be categorised into three types:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
This type of apnea occurs when the upper airway is blocked due to the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapsing.
Central Sleep Apnea
Central apnea could occur due to a problem in the heart or brain, where the body stops its effort to breathe. There is no blockage in the brain, but it fails to send signals to the muscles to breathe.
Mixed Apnea
As the name suggests, it is a combination of central and obstructive apnea. It is a form of apnea which is most commonly observed in small, premature infants.
What are its causes?
Sleep apnea could be due to several reasons. Some of the causes of sleep apnea are:
Relaxing the muscles during sleep. Our muscles relax when we sleep, but in case of obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles relax more than required, thus collapsing the airway and making it hard to breathe. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are also the causes of obstructive apnea.
Family history of apnea
Overweight
Down's syndrome
Cerebral palsy
Deformity in the mouth, jaw and throat structure
Comparatively longer neck
Large tongue that can fall back and block the airway while sleeping
In babies, there could be a few other reasons causing sleep apnea.
Bleeding in the brain
Respiratory disease
Gastrointestinal problems like reflux
Infection
Seizures
Imbalance in the chemistry of the body like abnormal amounts of calcium or glucose in body
Exposure to harmful and toxic chemicals
Which babies are at the risk of having sleep apnea?
Any baby can have apnea, but it is a more common condition in premature babies. Longer the time gap of premature birth, higher is the risk of apnea. In babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, the condition is called apnea of prematurity. In babies born at 37 weeks or later, it is called apnea of infancy. As per reports, around 84 percent of underweight babies who weigh less than 1 kilogram have a risk of apnea. The risk reduces to 25 percent among babies who weight around 2.5 kilograms at birth.
Down's syndrome and congenital conditions can also affect the upper airway, thus causing sleep apnea. Most of the children with Down's syndrome suffer from sleep apnea as well.
Complications
Sleep apnea is a serious health condition, especially in premature infants. In rare cases, it may be fatal. In this condition, as the baby stops breathing, the oxygen level in the blood drops and the level of carbon dioxide increases. This could also lead to a drop in the heart rate and cause unconsciousness.
Signs of Sleep Apnea in Babies
A parent needs to be conscious at all times to observe any signs of apnea. They need to be extra careful when it is about premature or underweight babies. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, interruption in breathing up till 15 seconds is normal and is called periodic breathing. Periodic breathing is not a symptom of apnea. However, an increase in the time of breathing pauses is an alarming sign.
Here are the signs of sleep apnea in babies that parents should be careful about:
The skin turning blue: Forehead and body of the infant turning blue indicate that the blood oxygen levels are low. Note that sometimes, the skin around the baby’s mouth or the feet may turn bluish if the baby has a cold or has been crying.
Gasping: It happens after a long cessation of breathing. Due to the immaturity of the respiratory system in premature babies, the brain fails in sending signals to the muscles to breathe. This is a clear indication of central sleep apnea.
Limpness: Limp muscles are a serious effect of apnea. Limpness of muscles occurs due to extreme reduction in the oxygen level in blood.
Slow heart rate: Infants with apnea have slower heart rate, causing a condition called bradycardia, which may lead to sudden unconsciousness.
How is the diagnosis done?
Upon suspecting a sleeping disorder, the baby needs to be taken to a sleep specialist. The child’s doctor will conduct some examinations before referring to a paediatric pulmonologist. Measuring the oxygen level in the blood, monitoring the heart rate and checking the breathing are some of the tests.
Another test that is conducted to diagnose apnea is a polysomnogram. This requires keen observation of the baby while asleep, and is conducted in the sleep lab by technicians. This observation is done to capture brain waves, heartbeat and breathing pattern, revealing the nature of the breathing problem. It is a painless procedure.
Treatment
Depending on the severity of the apnea, the doctor will prescribe medication for the baby. In case of enlarged tonsils and adenoids, a throat or ENT specialist has to be consulted. In some cases of obstructive apnea, a continuous positive airway pressure machine is used for some time. A baby sleep apnea monitor could also be used for infants who require cardio-respiratory monitoring for a variety of problems that affect breathing.
Most of the babies with infant sleep apnea are relieved of this condition as they grow, but apnea of prematurity might persist longer.
Note: Parents of babies with sleep apnea should learn how to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Discuss this with your doctor and learn it so you can be prepared for an emergency.
When to call a doctor?
In case of babies with premature birth and underweight issues, the parents need to be extra cautious. When an interruption of breathing is for more than 15 seconds, and the baby does not respond to gentle nudging, call a doctor immediately.
Even though sleep apnea is a serious condition, proper steps at the right time can help parents treat this condition in their newborn. Careful observation and consultation are mandatory for the right guidance and treatment procedure.

6 Funny Stages ALL Of Us Go Through When We Try a Weight Loss Diet!
Our bodies - we've learnt about love-hate relationships from them! We love our eyes but hate our thighs, don't mind the curve of our smiles but not the curve of our huge bottoms...we're all like that, no? So we took the chance to humour ourselves on our quest to perfect bodies with these hilarious but true stages of dieting we've all gone through... go ahead, it's time to say “OMG yes! Been there done that!”
2 months to that beach vacation you've been waiting for and you are cursing yourself for not joining the gym 6 months ago. To make things worse, that tummy roll has only gotten squishier! Your mom says “Beta, jeera water pee lo, first thing in the morning” and your best friend says “4 cups of green tea a day, Babe” but you're so keen you mix all of these things up and decide to binge on a huge slice of chocolate cake. But it's homemade, you tell yourself. Trust me, your thighs may be thanking you but your brain is not happy! All too familiar, right?
We present to you, your dieting life in stages! Grab your green tea, ahem, cake slice, and read on.
The 6 Stages All Of Us Go Through When We Try a Weight Loss Diet!
Stage 1 – Overly Optimistic
You've got a Pinterest board titled “1 month to a new me” ready, full of dietician-approved recipes, motivational quotes with fitness models making you feel horrible about yourself, and you've even gone and bought yourself some workout clothes. Ready? You've got this! The first 3 days are on-point! You wake up early, drink 1 glass of warm water, lemon and honey. You follow up with a workout and then stuff your face with fruits (but not bananas, because you know that bananas are loaded with sugar and you really just cannot have sugar right now). Lunch is multi-grain rotis (just two, because that is what all the celebrities say they eat), sabzi without oil, and dahi. You follow with your second cup of green tea for the day. Life is amazing and you can swear your tummy roll is shrinking already!
Stage 2 – Why Am I Doing This Again?
Self-doubt. Can I pull this off?
Is this plan for hard-core fitness enthusiasts? Am I one of them?
Can I never eat gajar ka halwa again?
Is it worth giving up pizza for?
Beware, self-doubt kicks in hard during diet days. You are doing so well, and seeing differences; you are even enjoying your cups of green tea! Coffee breaks are replaced with water guzzling sessions but WHAM! Self-doubt hits you. How you wish you were guzzling sweetened fruit juice (because fruits are healthy, no? Ah, we know all the weight loss fun facts!). This leads you to your next stage of dieting.
Stage 3 - Trying To Remain Optimistic
Breathe, cravings happen to the best of us. Yes, your husband may be slurping his coffee extra loudly today, or the crunching sound of your child eating chips may be driving you insane, but hold on girl, you've got this! You tell yourself to breathe (all those Pranayams must work now!). Breathe, crunch on another carrot or celery stick, and move on with your day. This stage is hard and the weight loss effects nowhere to be seen. But you know you trust your willpower; diet plan is still going strong!
Stage 4 - Wanting To Give Up
That escalated quickly, didn't it? You are now seeing some minor changes, jeans are not as tight as before, skin looks brighter and you're telling yourself, it's okay, at least I'll be radiant in my beach vacation pictures. You are slowly moving dangerously close to giving up. If you close your eyes and hear loud, beeping sounds and see red lights flashing, this is your brain telling you that your diet is battered and on its way to the grave! Don't give up just yet, fight!
Stage 5 - The Lie
Uh-oh. “Just a little bite of Neha's birthday cake won't do anything. She will feel bad if I don't eat it, we're such good friends...”
NO! You have reached the stage of “lies”. These are the little messages your heart is telling you, disguised as your brain. This stage is an emotional trap and very few make it out still going strong. It involves guilt, anger, several conflicts with your conscience, and more! Tough love is the only thing that works. Reach out to a friend or someone that is rooting for this diet and get them to snatch that cake before it makes its way to your mouth and then to your shrinking tummy roll.
Stage 6 – The Fall
“RIP diet, we were good while we lasted but I just find myself being drawn towards the comfort and security that cake gives me. It's not you, it's me.”
You've taken the plunge. You binged and loved it. Your heart, your mind and your body are intoxicated and endorphins are oozing out like never before and you have no regrets. That beach vacay can have you with all your lumps and bumps because that's just who you are. Your Pinterest pins are replaced with “BeYOUtiful” and "Love your body". The fitness models have been replaced with curvy, thick women who are loving life just like you are and you are embracing yourself (and cake) like never before!
Congratulations! You've completed your version of a diet plan and you have had enough till the next big event comes up. Till then you've accepted that round is a shape and swimsuits need curves to hug and your curves are ready for it! We're with you, babe. Read more

A. You haven’t mentioned the current age of your child but sometimes when the child is on formula feeding a bottle feeding from the beginning itself they are more comfortable to take it that’s the probable reason that your child is not taking feeding directly onto your breast and more comfortable taking a bottle feeling

Q. my son and my daughter twins 1 month 24 days potty is green Black type what should I do
Dr Vandan H Kumar
Paediatrician
A. that's normal
the green colour that many times is present in the stool is due to the digestive enzymes (bile )present in the stomach and when the food reacts with the digestive enzymes this can give green colour to the stool.
the importance is of consistency of the stool so if the consistency is watery and green then only you need to meet the doctor but if it is semi solid to solid green stool then no need to meet the doctor. d
