Reading to Babies - Benefits and How to Get Started
You may have started talking to your little bundle of joy from the time when you experienced him move inside your tummy for the first time. Babies can hear when they are in their mother’s womb, and soon after birth, they may recognize their mother’s voice too. This means that babies react to whatever they hear, so don't you think it would be a great idea to start reading to your baby? If you are wondering on how to go about it, then you need not worry as in the article we shall discuss reading to babies, how you can start it, and how it is beneficial.
When to Start Reading to Baby
If you are thinking that it will be too early to start reading to a newborn baby because he is too small to understand words, then you might be wrong. Babies do pay heed to various sounds they hear, and reading to a baby will make him aware of various sounds and words and will develop listening skills in him. Apart from that, it is a great way to spend some mommy-baby time too.
Benefits of Reading to a Baby
If you are wondering why reading to babies is important, then read the following points mentioned below. You will understand how it the benefits a baby:
1. It is a great way of getting a response from a baby
As soon as you begin reading to your baby, you will notice that after a while your baby might respond to your voice by moving his arms and legs. This is a baby's way of letting you know that he is registering what you are doing for him. Thus, reading is a great way of triggering a response from your little munchkin.
2. It helps strengthen the bond
Reading to your baby is a great way of connecting with your little bundle of joy. When you read to your baby, your voice is gentle and soft. Your voice has a very calming and soothing effect on your baby and it helps your baby feel loved and protected. Hence, this mom and baby time can strengthen the bond.
3. It helps in the development of the brain
In a study, it was established that babies who were read to in the initial stages after birth had better command over a language and had an enhanced vocabulary. These babies showed better mathematical skills too. Also, in another study, it was observed that babies whose parents talked to them a lot in the initial days, performed better in the standard tests by the time they reached kindergarten, in comparison to parents who didn’t invest much time talking to their babies.
4. Inculcates the habit of reading
Although your baby may not understand or comprehend whatever you may be narrating to him, he assimilates the information about your tone, rhythm, and inflexions of your voice. In a research, it was established that when a baby is exposed to more number of words or vocabulary, it helps in preparing him to begin reading on his own.
5. It is a great way to expose a baby to visuals
As your baby grows, his eyes are able to focus more and he can track various objects. Also, from birth to about three months of age, your baby may be able to focus on various pictures and patterns in a picture book. Babies start recognising various shapes and patterns as they grow. Hence, the more you read to him and show him picture books, the more knowledge he will have of various patterns.
6. A good habit is inculcated from an early age
When you read to your baby, you are not only reading out from a book, but you are laying the foundation of a good habit in him. As your baby grows, you will see him looking for books and reading them on his own. By observing his family sharing some fun reading time will help your baby understand that reading is a fun activity.
7. It makes a baby aware of different emotions
When you modulate your voice while reading and use various facial expressions, it helps your baby understand about various human emotions from an early age.
8. It prepares a baby for school
Though it may be a bit too early to start talking about school, it is important to understand good habits die hard and if your baby is surrounded with books from early childhood, then it will be an easy transition to school too.
How to Read Books to Babies of Different Age Groups
Here’s how you can practise reading books to a baby as he grows:
1. 4 Months
At four months of age, your baby does not show that much involvement when you read to him. However, it will be a good idea to cuddle and circle your arms around your baby and then start reading to him.
2. 6 Months
At this age, your little explorer may be more interested in grabbing, fiddling, and licking the book, let your baby do all that and help him get acquainted with reading.
3. 8 Months
By this age too, you will find it difficult to grab your baby’s attention because he may be more interested in holding the book and turning the pages. However, it will be a good idea to exercise patience and continue reading to him.
4. 12 Months
Around this time, your baby may show more interest in the books and may even point at various objects, imitate various sounds etc. while you read to him.
Additional Tips to Follow While Reading to Your Infant
Here are some tips that may make reading a fun experience for you and your baby:
Your baby will love it if you use different sounds and try voice modulation while narrating a story, therefore don’t be hesitant to read the story with voice modulation. Make animal sounds, cry, whine, and get involved in the story, and your baby will enjoy it and he will look forward to reading sessions.
You can also use different facial expressions when reading to your baby to make reading a fun experience for your little one.
Hug and cuddle your baby to make reading a more soothing and calming experience for your baby.
Bounce, giggle, and laugh while reading to keep your baby engaged as you read to him.
Keep asking questions, even if your baby does not understand. This will prepare him for later stages.
When your baby can hold a book, you may let him hold as you read but do not let him put it in his mouth and chew it.
How to Choose the Right Books for Your Baby
Are there any books that you should specifically read to your baby? There is not one definite book that you should choose for your baby, you can choose any fun and interesting book. However, here are some points to keep in mind when buying a book for your baby:
Pick up a book which is small and can be held easily by your baby, as your baby will enjoy taking the book in his hands while you read to him.
Pick up a book that has simpler and fewer illustrations so that it’s easier for a baby to comprehend.
Get books with simpler stories or narrations and which has fewer pages because you may find it difficult to have your baby’s attention for a long time.
Nowadays, books come in various forms, there are 3D books, books with sounds, and so on. So, pick a book with either of these options, as your baby will love to feel and touch the elements of the book. Books with sounds will also capture his attention.
Read a story that is rhythmic and engaging because babies like to get involved in something that is more predictable, something like the car goes vroom-vroom, or train goes chu-chu etc.
These were some tips to read to your baby. Reading is a great way to help your baby to learn a language. Reading also helps in the cognitive development of a baby, so pick up an interesting book now!

How to engage toddlers at home (during lockdown)- 42 indoor activities - Part 1
Welcome! If you are here then that means you are either struggling in engaging your toddler or looking for new ideas for your growing up, naughty little toddlers, at home.

Actually I can understand how it goes and above all considering this pandemic (covid-19) situation, some places are still struggling best to sustain life and some still experiencing lockdown, which has basically made lives of children much tougher, as they are confined in-house with no/limited outdoor accesses.

I too have a toddler who is 2 years 10 months now and I definitely know how tough it is to keep these little munchkins indoors all the time plus we as parents always want them avoid much of screen time.

I have seen it with many of my friends and relatives that they find it quite difficult at times to engage their children at home due to several reasons, as simple as time scarcity, due to homemakers being busy in household chores or the working parents' "work from home" stuff. People even strive a lot for ideas on toddlers at-home engagement activities.

I am a homemaker as of now and I seriously feel that engaging a child is not a tough task, the only thing which it requires is our time and patience. Just a simple time management of our own chores can really lead to growing up of a happy and healthy child.
Anyways, not going to further digging into how to manage our own time as parents, here I will give some of the simple activities (which can be done with resources/items available at home) which my son really loves doing with me and hence he never feels bored even if he is at home for the entire day.
Believe me the activities I am sharing are the ones which all the toddlers will love playing plus these will cost you nothing or next to nothing and if parents are doing these activities together with the child then the bond of two will be stronger due to the quality time spent, so let's get started.
42 at home activities for toddlers
1. Fly high in the sky: A balloon -

Yes, you heard that correctly and this is really the most fascinating game which my LO just loves playing. We got a pack of balloons for him on his birthday and this has really helped us when thinking of any most engaging indoor activity. We just try to make the balloon sit on the round table fan at home and believe me the all lovely smile he has, watching it fly high and trying to catch/kick it, makes my day. We even at times play balloon cricket at home when he is bored with above.

Suggestion: This activity can be even used as a "learning while playing" activity if it is a colourful pack of balloons. My son now knows most of the colours due to this activity.
2. Enacting or role play favourite characters:
2.1 Hooooaaahhhhh Dinosaurrrrr---- Is the sound my little one just loves to make being a T-rex dino himself.

He, the predator, running after poor me☺, the prey, is his favourite play.
2.2 We have a doctor kit so I am always the patient to the ONE AND ONLY famous little doc in house. I am always and only the one taking all the check ups, injections, medicines, surgeries from my inexperiencly experienced doctor but we love doing it together, with all his laugh and chuckles spreading in the house while seeing me all screaming in the fear of getting an injection or medication from him as doctor.

Suggestion: Role play can be done of any person/animal/ toy whatever your kid loves. My kid also loves my enacting as a cow and I love him enacting as 'Georgie Pig' from the famous kid show "Peppa Pig". This activity enhances the thinking ability of your kid when you let him plan the role he eagerly wants to play.
3. Basket ball with laundry bag:
A ball always fancies a kid and let us make it fancier by providing a basket to ball. I just keep a laundry bag in front of my kid and he plays an hour or so just trying to basket it. He really tries hard until he baskets his ball.

Suggestion: You can use any item to act as a basket like a bucket or any big kitchen utensil or any other stuff which you feel can suffice the role of a basket here. Make the child stand at a distance (suitable for him/his age) from the basket and ask him to put the ball in it. This activity will not only be just a simple play activity but also help him improve his concentration and hand eye co-ordination.
Also instead of a ball, a balloon or any other item can be used to make game more interesting plus giving variety to a child.
4. Sorting beans:

Ever wondered that things what we eat can even be used as an activity item for the kid? Yes, it can be. The kidney beans and the chickpeas are a great source not just for the body but now even for play. I provide my kid two bowls, one empty the other with any one or mixed beans and ask him to transfer those to the empty bowl. This engages and grasps his interest quite a lot. Try it out with your kid as well as he will surely enjoy doing this.

Suggestion: You can use any beans, lentils, etc in this activity but just be sure of using an appropriate size of item being used, as smaller size might make the kid use lots of efforts thereby making him lose interest. Also this activity can be used with mixed beans and asking the kid to transfer likes in different bowls.
This activity will help him in his eye hand co-ordination and will even help him in holding a pencil between his fingers later.
5. Pillows/cushions fight:
Now these comfortable at home sleep items can also comfort your 'kids and yours' active activity life.

Just give him a cushion/pillow of his interest and start playing a small win-loss fight game.
My son likes small cushions (given names to these cushions too, not to be revealed here😉) with which we both play fight games and the glorious victory look which he has once I say I lost is all what makes me the winner all over🤩😉.
Suggestion: This activity can even be done with any of his/her favourite toys which should be such size that could provide a grip to be easily hand held and fought with. Make sure your kid understands that it's just a fight game and not a real fight 😁.
6. Music and dance:
Music is not just pleasing to ears but can even be a pleasing to parents as an engaging at home activity.
This activity is, these days, played at many functions/ceremonies too.
With his little chair on the floor and giving command to Alexa - Smart speaker (alesshaa as he calls it) at home he just loves playing musical chair with his partner in play - mommy.

Suggestion: This activity can be used as a simple dance to music activity as well, as simple as, playing songs and dancing with your kids. Even playing his favourite rhymes and then asking him to copy the way you do will make it a 'sing and learn' activity too.
7. Playing animal sound:
Love for animals exists in all human beings so is the case with our lil ones. My kid loves to make sounds of his favourite animals (list goes as cow, lion, tiger, goat....).
This is one of his favourite activities since he was just 6 months old. We started making him listen to the sounds of animals through Alexa-smart speaker and till date he loves this activity this way.

Suggestion: You can even ask any of your smart devices (smart speakers, e.g. amazon echo, google home, etc.) to play sounds of animals/birds (anything which your kid loves) and ask him to identify the same. This will help him learn various animals, their sounds and will even help boosting his memory too.
8.Jumping up and down:
This activity is/will somehow be relevant to every childhood, ours too.
Jumping is one of the most loved kid's past time activity. Wherever and whenever, this is something that requires no toy, no help just the mood to jump and jump.
My kid is a real naughty one and his main motive is to jump all over everywhere in the house.
So as an appetite boosting activity too, sometimes I make him jump from/on the bed/sofa to the floor or sometimes simply on the floor (with a simple 'five little monkey rhyme' on).
All kids are real monkeys (nom), hanging on the curtains, jumping here and there is their love and now activity as well.

9. Enacting- Animal race :
We form different animals (like he is a horse and me a poor frog 😜) and race together. I plan goodies (as simple as a chupachup or a candy) too for the winner which makes the game more interesting for him. This helps him build a confidence to run in different ways and have a high spirit to compete for something he really wants to win (a candy here).
Suggestion: A simple toy race (like kid handling one of his fav and you the other) can also be a good option here. Make it more interesting and playful the way you want or the way your kid would love playing it.
10. Hitting the target objects with ball/ indoor bowling alley:
An indoor bowling alley is the activity all love to play so same can be done at home to engage the kids. I simply make a pyramid of disposable glasses and ask my son to stand at a distance and hit it with a small stress ball. This activity engages him for quite a while as 4-5 hits is what he requires to properly make the pyramid fall.

Suggestion: Steel glasses or any set of utensil at home can be used for this activity. I, at times, keep a small glass on top of my moisturising body lotion bottle and ask him to hit the glass, so many of such household items can be replaced with the disposable glass mentioned above as the idea is just to make the child aim and hit the target.
Also making a pyramid with the same item can even be an option. Believe me this really improves his concentration and motor skills.
11. Human/manmade slide for kids/their toys:
This lockdown or to avoid public places due to pandemic, would have made every parent think of avoiding the children parks. So what can be better than creating park similar slides available at home as an alternative to park visits.
Yes, you heard it right. I make slide for my kid using my legs, though he enjoys his father's slide due to the length of slide available 😄 but anyways, he slides on the same and feel happy doing the park activity at home.
I can agree to this that the excitement of meeting friends and playing at park cant be matched here but that's how I can engage him by creating something somewhat similar for him to enjoy being at home.
Suggestion: This activity can be done with multiple big pillows/cushions or even big cardboard boxes (you might have got while ordering groceries for home deliveries or big tv boxes, but toys boxes can even suffice the need).
So if you have any so you are good to go else your own body part will help you doing so😊😊.
12. Building blocks:
Nothing is here to explain how this is used as kid's engaging activity. Just an add on is my son uses the blocks his imaginary ways to make things, like below is the pic which he made out of blocks saying it's a Caterpillar:)

Suggestion: This can be used as a colour learning activity or shapes learning activity or anyway you can think to use it a better way.
13. Building pyramids with disposable glasses or steel glasses:
As discussed in one of the suggestions above you can use any items at home which can be made as a pyramid shape. This will help kid know how to create it and even know exactly what a pyramid is.
14. Spaces vs cross:
For this activity all you would just need is a cello tape and some space.
Just take a black coloured cello tape and make a cross and two minus sign having some space alternatively on the floor. Form a circle or a semi circle out of it. Ask your child not to jump on the cross but just jump on the space between two minus signs. This will be a good physical activity for him plus keep him busy and active for atleast an hour.
Suggestion: The above way of using a cello tape is just to make it look fancy to kids. But you can even use pillows or any other item which you think the kid can jump over again and again without losing his interest.
15. Time for laundry:
Make your child involved in the laundry activity with you. Almost all houses have clothes to wash every other day so take help of your young one so that he too gets involved and is aware of this task of yours.

I make my kid fill the washing machine with the clothes to be washed and he just loves this activity.
16. Sorting toys as per colour:
This is again a learning while doing activity. I put all the toys of my kid in his big toy box and then ask him to keep same colour toys either in smaller boxes or at one place on the floor. This helps in knowing the colours better.

Suggestion: You can ask the child to collect the items of similar shapes or size as per the availability of stuff at home.
17. Passing the parcel:
We use ball here as the parcel, play it as a simple throw/catch game with the ball.

Suggestion: Anything as simple as a stress ball or a small cushion or even a lemon on the kitchen (just to make it fancier) can be used as a parcel here.
18. Soft home cricket:
The word soft here is just to remind the rule of no fours and no sixes in the home please 😅. My lil one loves to play home cricket with his bat and a stress ball for no sound effect😁.

Suggestion: To give him a variety I keep changing the homemade bat😝 from chopping board to spatula to a cardboard and whatever is available and can be used as a bat for him. Try it, the child will start loving cricket more and more.
19. Colouring:
Most of the children love colouring but mine one doesn't like it much so to make him colour either we have to bribe him for a candy or make the colouring technique a bit fancier to gain his interest. Second method of technique is the one we prefer.
So what we do is we try to make him colour with things he like, as in, the colour pencil will be a cotton bud. This is how he gains interest and colours the images.

Suggestion: To gain the interest of the child make him colour his favourite cartoon characters with his favourite colour if any.
20. Home Football:
No details needed I feel. The words themselves tell the story. Play home football with the kid with any small doing no destruction to the other fragile household items. I always prefer using stress balls when planning to play a ball game.

Suggestion: Though not just generic to this activity alone but please don't forget to pat his back when he wins or encourage for the next round when he loses.
Believe me all these activities will really be a fun and learning activities for your kids and will keep them engaged at home. Just try out these, if not already tried, and see that happiness on your kid's face, you will surely love it.

Not to make this post too long I will continue writing about the rest 22 indoor activities in my upcoming post "How to engage toddlers at home (during lockdown)- 42 indoor activities - Part 2" . Please stay tuned.

Those Three Days with Her Husband and a Wonderful Pregnancy Experience
She was on cloud nine, happy like never before. She could not believe her eyes, after 6 years of marriage, at last, she was pregnant. Normally red colour indicates danger, failure for students etc. But today was the second time red colour filled her life with happiness:
The first time was when she married her love of life and he used red colour to fill her maang....
And today the red colour was about to bring another angel to her life …
Being a parent is ultimate happiness, fullness for a woman and a man becomes a father apart from being a son, a husband and a brother.
So, Bhavna was all set to give the news to her mother and mother-in-law and as expected, they both were very happy but had an orthodox approach towards life. Every day lectures begun as in:
• Don’t tell to anyone ( nazar lag jayegi )
• Just eat healthy food
• You are just a kid, you should listen to us
• Don’t listen to the doctors much
• Don’t go for regular ultrasound checkups
• Don’t eat too much… etc etc etc..
In situations li,ke these we have no option but to listen to our moms as their suggestions are ostensible at least according to them.
So, Bhavna carefully followed the Dos and the Don'ts. It was all going well. Weeks and months passed by, she was in her 5th month now. Moms became more obstinate towards the do’s and the don’ts’. At times it became difficult for Bhavna to breathe in such an atmosphere. She had:
• Terrible mood swings
• Urge to eat sweets developed
• Wanted more of fried food
• Wanted to eat late night food
• Wanted to go out of the house
But, but, but.... continuous reminders from her moms stopped her in doing all the above so she started being quiet, she confined herself to home. Her darling husband was seeing all this. He took the initiative, met her doctor, sought permission for three days to take her to a nearby place as a change for her. They were out for a drive.
She was quiet,"he noticed”.
She saw the ice-cream stall , "he noticed”.
She saw Burger King, “he noticed”.
He just gave a cute smile, but she could not understand. And then suddenly he applied the brakes, the car stopped, they were parked in front of a hotel.
She was surprised.
As they checked in, more surprises waited for her.
The room was beautifully decorated. A smile was on her face and he was waiting for it. When she went near the bed, what she saw brought tears to her eyes.
• Chocolate ice- creams
• Jalebi, burfi, laddu (sweets)
• Fries, tikkis
• Shakes specially mango shake
• Chocolates etc etc…..
All she did was hug her loving husband tightly like never before and cry like a small child. He was relaxed as he could see her subdued emotions come out. “She ate like a pig” with tears rolling down her cheeks, but of course those were of contentment.
They spent quality time together. She was buoyant like never before, the kid in her was back. After three days of enthusiasm and eagerness, they were back to normal routine. The Dos and Don’ts started again but...
She was normal and took it in a caring way as in love of her moms towards the little one that was about to come to this world...
Of course they also cared a lot for the would-be mom ..
Now it was the 9th month, impatience was easily visible on everyone’s face. Whole family was together to welcome the little one. Doctor had told any day, any minute, any second. Time passed in the blink of an eye and a cute little boy was her hands.
She was crying with joy.
Everyone was on the seventh heaven not because it was a boy but because ....
• Mother was absolutely fine.
• It was a normal delivery.
• Baby was healthy.
• No complications in the 9 months of pregnancy.
• Grand moms were contended as their daughter listened to them.
• Husband was overwhelmed with joy as he was able to bring a smile of contentment on her face in those three days and it paid him well.
• Above all, she was happy as she was fine and all were happy.
There were no regrets from her side to listen to her beautiful experienced moms. She is a blessed soul with a cute little boy in her life and a wonderful family from both sides.

5 Workout Tips to do in Office
Forget making excuses for shirking exercise. Even busy moms can squeeze in time to perform these easy office workouts. Do them when sitting or standing to prevent stiffness, strain and pain that's all too common among working professionals. All you need is a few minutes each day.
With more moms taking on the role of homemaker and working professional, there's little time to focus on the self. Simple things like workouts that were once easy to do become next to impossible. However, this shouldn't be an excuse to shirk exercising. Your health is important not just to you but to your family too, so take the time to perform office exercises as much as you can. Here are a few things you can try to get yourself on the road to fitness.
1. Stretching to relieve back pain
There are few things as bad for your back as sitting on a chair for prolonged periods. If you have a desk job, chances are you've already developed a kink in your back. What you can do to relieve stiffness and pain is to stand up every 30 minutes. Place your palms flat against the small of your back and gently bend backwards. Follow up by slowly twisting your torso from side to side.
2. Leg extensions
Use the chair to your advantage and give your thighs a workout. Sit straight and hold the sides of the chair for support. Stretch one leg out straight in front of you and hold it for five seconds. Lower it and do the same with the other leg. Repeat as many times as possible.
3. Relieving eye strain
Staring at a computer for prolonged periods can cause strain that can affect your performance at work. You need to take short breaks regularly. Every 20 minutes or half an hour, stare at an object 20 feet away for about 30 seconds. Blink while doing it to prevent your eyes from drying.
4. Toning Your Arms
Carry a set of dumbbells and leave it at the office. Use it to perform arm exercises while sitting down. Do 20 reps each of bicep and tricep curls every day. In addition to this, do remember to stretch your hands in front of you and rotate your wrists every 30 minutes or so. This can help reduce the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
5. Get up and Walk
It could be a trip to the bathroom or the copy room—the more you get up and walk around, the better your neck, back, and legs will thank you. It's easy to find sitting down comfortable and when you're busy with work, you may not always remember to take breaks. A great way to establish a routine is to set reminders on your phone or your computer.
There's no excuse for not working out even if it's just for a few minutes at a time. Don't fall victim to a sedentary lifestyle, but celebrate good health with simple desk exercises you can perform just about anywhere. Read more

A. Hello dear! If your pregnancy is going on fine without any high risk factors then it’s okay. Still, would advise you to check with your doctor once before going further. Maintain a good personal hygiene routine and a healthy lifestyle

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much. But it is really very difficult to say anything without proper examination. It is advisable to get yourself evaluated by a doctor and follow doctors advise properly. You can also book online doctor’s appointment on FirstCry where the doctor can help you and guide you properly.
Thanks and take care

A. Yes it is the what part is that your child is kicking if you feel that there is a movement of your child whether it is a cake or slight movement also you know that your child is doing fine so there is no problem in that if the movement is less it’s completely alright

Q. #asktheexperts what to do if the baby’s nose is blovked

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
