16 Best Home Remedies for Blocked Nose in Babies
A cold and a blocked nose can make your baby cranky and uncomfortable, and give both of you sleepless nights. If you don't wish to consult a doctor just yet, try out these home remedies to provide relief from a blocked nose.
Natural Remedies for Blocked Nose in Infants
In India, many parents resort to home remedies as they are not only inexpensive but also safe, unlike antibiotics (which may have side effects) and over-the-counter medicines (which should not be given to infants). Here are some of the best home remedies for nose congestion in infants.
1. Focus on breastfeeding your baby. Breast milk has essential nutrients and antibodies that develop and strengthen your baby's immune system. A good immune system will help your baby fight against a cold and cough.
2. You can also put a few drops of breast milk into your baby's nose to open up the nasal passage.
3. You can make nasal drops for your baby at home. To 8 teaspoons of water, add ½ a teaspoon of salt and mix well with a sterilised spoon. Pour a few drops into your baby's nostrils once the solution cools down.
4. Eucalyptus oil is used to treat cold and open up a nasal blockage. Sprinkle a few drops of the oil on your baby's pillow and bedding. Since the smell is too strong for infants, eucalyptus oil shouldn't be directly applied to the skin.
5. Elevating your baby's head with the help of a pillow helps the mucus flow out, thereby opening up the nasal passage.
6. Keeping your baby hydrated is important, more so when she's down with a cold. Fluids dilute the mucus and relieve stuffiness in the nose. You can also feed warm and unsweetened apple juice and chamomile tea (without honey) if she's older than 6 months.
7. Clear chicken soup is another useful home remedy for a cough and cold. Chicken contains anti-inflammatory properties that clear up the nasal massage as well as improve your baby's immunity.
8. In case the nasal congestion is severe, turn on the shower and let the hot water create steam in the restroom. Then, take your baby into the bathroom for a few minutes. You can also give him a bath with warm water.
9. A nasal aspirator can do wonders for a stuffy nose. Just squeeze the air out of the aspirator gently insert the tip into your baby's nostril. Then slowly release the bulb so that the mucus gets sucked into it. Do the same with both the nostrils. After every use, wash the aspirator and sterilise it.
10. A cool mist humidifier will create moisture in the air and clear out the congestion in your baby's nasal passage.
11. In case you don't have a humidifier, keep a bucket of warm water in her room while she sleeps. The warm water will help to ease your baby's stuffy nose.
12. A mustard oil massage is another effective way of treating a cold and nasal congestion. To 1/4th cup of mustard oil, add 3-4 cloves of roughly crushed garlic and methi (fenugreek) seeds and heat it. Once the oil cools down, massage your baby with it. Apply the oil to the nasal bridge, forehead, cheekbones, chest and the back with soft and gentle hand movements.
13. Dried-up mucus is one of the main culprits of a blocked nose. Wet a cotton swab with warm water to clean the insides of your baby's nostrils. Do it gently and with care to avoid hurting your little one.
14. Lay your baby across your knees and pat her back gently. This brings the mucus up from the chest and she can cough it out easily.
15. Give your infant a warm compress. Soak a small piece of cloth in warm water, squeeze out the excess water and place on her nose and cheeks. Repeat this a few times.
16. Roast a few garlic cloves with ajwain until the aroma starts to waft out. Tie these up in a potli and keep it a safe distance from your little one. The fumes will provide relief from a stuffy nose.
When Should You Visit the Paediatrician?
If home remedies aren't working for your baby, she may need a medical check-up. Consider visiting a paediatrician if:
The cold doesn't clear up within three weeks
Your baby takes quick breaths
She is running a high temperature
She coughs up blood
Your baby's condition seems to be getting worse
Your little one has a persistent sore throat
You see her wheezing and her skin turning pale or blue
How Does the Diagnosis Happen?
A paediatrician will check your baby's temperature and observe her breathing pattern. For more clarity on your her health condition, an X-ray may be suggested.
Home remedies for cold, cough and nasal block are practised in every Indian household. However, we must understand that all cases of nasal congestion cannot be cured through home remedies. Especially, care and precaution should be taken in case of babies. In such a case immediate visit to a doctor is a must.

13 Best Iron Rich Foods for Kids
Is your child facing difficulty learning, remembering spellings or too tired for a round of 'catch the ball' and other activities? Then chances are - they are iron-deficient. Iron deficiency is linked to fatigue, cognitive impairment and health disorders in kids.
From green poop to congestion, fatigue, cognitive impairment and growth disorders - iron deficiency causes an assortment of health problems in kids and affects their overall well being. Breastfeeding does provide iron during the first six months. However, breast milk alone doesn't cut it when it comes to meeting the daily nutritional requirements in children, especially when it comes to iron.
Benefits of Iron for Children
The following are the benefits of iron for children-
A protein known as haemoglobin in iron-rich foods is responsible for carrying oxygen through the blood to different organs in the body. Iron deficiency leads to anaemia which is why the biggest benefit iron provides is to keep your child's blood healthy and circulating.
Sufficient iron intake is linked to proper cognitive development in growing kids. Majority of a child's cognitive development takes place within the first 6 years of their lives which is why proper iron intake is a must.
Iron fights against hair loss and brings a glow to the skin, thus keeping it healthy.
It fastens healing of wounds and injuries and the oxygen supplied to different muscles and tissues promotes proper growth of different organs in the body.
Improves appetite, fights against fatigue and keeps children energetic throughout the day.
Iron aids in developing a strong immunity and produces reactive oxygen specimens that combat pathogens.
Amount of Iron Your Child Needs
The amount of iron your child requires will depend on his/her age. The following are the iron requirements for kids in different age brackets-
Babies between zero to six months- 0.27mg/day
Babies between seven to twelve months - 11mg/day
Toddlers ranging between 1 to 3 years old - 7mg/day
4-year to 8-year-old kids - 10mg/day
Best Iron Rich Foods for Children
Dietary iron comes in two forms - heme and non-heme. Heme iron is the iron you find in animal meats while non-heme iron comes exclusively from plant-based foods. Lean meats, seafood and eggs/dairy, contain both heme and non-heme iron.
The key difference between heme and non-heme iron is their absorption rates in the blood. Heme iron gets absorbed and utilized easily in the blood while non-heme, not so much. Here is a list of iron-rich foods for kids, both heme and non-heme.
Heme Iron-Rich Foods
Heme-rich sources of iron for children are crucial for growing kids. Try to include fortified cereals and seafood to meet the daily requirement for iron intake in kids. Here is a list of iron rich food sources for kids.
1. Lean Meats
From chicken, lean turkey breast to beef - lean meats and organ meats are rich sources of heme iron for your kids. Remove fatty parts in meats since there is little iron in them. Aim to add liver to their meals and another kid-friendly iron-rich meal choice is spaghetti with meatballs or baked casserole. Pork chops work just as well.
2. Tuna
If your child is not prone to seafood allergies, then give them a serving of canned light-tuna. Not only is this low in calories and a low-fat option, it's an ideal source of iron for kids and can be served with pureed vegetables and sandwiches.
3. Lamb
Iron content is higher in red meats, and lean lamb portions provide adequate iron content. Lamb chops contain up to 2.1mg of iron per 3-ounce serving, and its portions are excellent sources of essential fatty acids like Omega-3s and CLA. Lamb is also rich in protein and contains vitamin B12 which is essential for cognitive development.
4. Oysters
High in iron and zinc, most types of shellfish are rich in iron, especially clam and oysters. Oysters regulate cholesterol levels in the blood, and a 3-ounce serving of cooked oyster provides up to 5.9 mg of iron in kids.
Non-Heme Iron-Rich Foods
A nutritious meal plan includes both heme and non-heme iron for proper cognitive and organ development. Excess iron can be toxic while too little iron causes iron deficiency and impairs children's development. This is why a good mix of heme and non-heme sources is crucial in your child's diet.
Here are some non-heme sources of iron-rich foods for kids.
1. Spinach
Spinach, kale, broccoli and your favourite daily greens are non-heme rich sources of iron for kids. Chop them up into salads and sandwiches or serve them alongside scrambled eggs. You could even make vegetable juices or smoothies with kale and broccoli and serve them to your kids.
2. Prune Juice
Although this has high-sugar content, prune juice is an excellent source of non-heme iron. Limit intake to no more than 3 to 6 ounces per day for your children. 1 cup of prune juice contains approximately 3 milligrams of iron, and it even helps with constipation problems.
3. Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are excellent sources of iron for kids. Ensure you cut them up into smaller chunks so that your children don't choke or have trouble eating them. You could serve by creating a trail mix of pumpkin seeds, raisins, apricots and prunes or even make pumpkin seed milk for a delicious daytime beverage.
4. Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwiches
Take fortified whole-wheat bread and serve a peanut butter jelly sandwich to your kids for a delicious evening snack. A serving of peanut butter jelly sandwich alone made from the fortified whole-wheat bread will meet their daily iron requirement. Another option is to make peanut butter cookies from fortified flour or oatmeal.
5. Raisins
Kids love to snack quite often, and a good way to meet their daily iron intake is to give them a quarter cup of raisins every day. A quarter cup of raisins not only will help prevent constipation, but they also contain approximately 1 milligram of iron.
6. Potatoes (with skin)
Potato skins are rich in non-heme iron and also contain a good deal of vitamin C. Be sure to not leave out the skin when making baked potatoes or french fries. Potato skins are known to carry over 5 times as much iron as regular peeled potatoes. They are nutrient-dense and mustn't be left out.
7. Fortified Cereals
Most instant and dry cereals (fortified versions) contain almost 100% of your child's daily iron requirement. Oatmeal is another good alternative too. Just be sure to check the nutrition info on labels to check for the amount of iron included in these cereals. Also, make sure you shop for low-sugar options and aim for one serving of these a day.
8. Beans And Lentils
Beans and lentils are your go-to choices for iron if your child especially hates meat. A half-cup of beans contains 4 mg of iron while a half-cup of lentil contains about 3 mg of iron. Excellent iron-rich bean choices include soybeans, lima beans, kidney beans and garbanzo beans (chickpeas). Make bean sandwiches with fortified whole-wheat bread or serve them alongside iron-enriched rice for a complete meal that's rich in protein, essential amino acids, and iron.
You could even make iron-rich hummus with chickpeas for serving with pita bread during evening snacks.
9. Mushrooms
Certain types of mushrooms are rich in iron and if your kids love coming back to these, why not keep serving to meet their needs? To give you a figure, one cup of cooked white mushrooms provides up to 15% of the RDI while oyster mushrooms offer iron twice as much as the white ones. It is important to note, however, that Portobello and Shiitake Mushrooms contain very little iron content as per nutritional guidelines.
Other options you could turn to for a mix of heme and non-heme iron are eggs, nutritional yeast, and fortified dairy products which include milk and cheese. Cow's milk, however, doesn't provide iron and consuming too much of it leads to an iron deficiency in children.
Tips To Include Iron in Children's Diet
An iron-rich diet is one which includes both heme and non-heme iron. Here are some tips for creating an iron-rich diet for kids.
1. Add Pulses And Fortified Grains
Make sure to include a few beans and lentils in your child's daily meal plans or use fortified grains like amaranth and quinoa to help your child meet their daily iron requirement.
2. Use Vitamin-C Rich Foods
From oranges to greens, sweet potatoes, bell peppers and different berries, vitamin-C rich foods help the body better absorb iron-content from other foods. Whenever you're planning to serve lean meats, be sure to throw in a dash of sweet potatoes or fruit and vegetable smoothies for a nutrient-perfect meal.
3. Ask The Doctor
If you're thinking of giving iron-supplements to your kids, be sure to consult the doctor before resorting to them. Children's bodies react differently to supplements due to diets which is why consulting with your paediatrician is vital before you make this decision on your own.
If your child takes in too much iron one day and a little less on the next, then there's no need to worry. Keep a track on your child's iron intake on average throughout the week and if they're falling a little short, be sure to add the above foods in their diet. Keep things interesting, make snack times fun and they'll be consuming the right amounts of iron in foods in no time!

I Love the Way You Hold Me!
"Please don't leave me!" Hold on, I still want you to come back, I still need you. I love the way you hold me. Please don't leave me alone. I feel scared when you are not around. Let me hear your heartbeat." Luv duv...Even like the above lyrics, my feelings are the same.
I know you were so scared to hold me for the first time. But the moment you touched me, something magical happened. That was purely divine. I know the story, you have tried your best to find me and feel the presence. Maybe I was not so responsive that time. Sorry dear! My apologies.
Believe me, now I just feel so happy looking at your eyes. The way you hold me, no one can ever do that, i.e. because you are special. I know you will tell me, the long list of my well-wishers. Yes everyone loves me and so do I. But few relationships are different, they are made in heaven. Maybe you never thought about me before. It's okay. By the way, Do I look cute? Do I disturb you often? These questions keep coming in my mind. I know you will say, of course, you are cute. You will say, you can never ever disturb anyone. Thanks!
Life must've changed for you. As I have taken a place in your heart. You must be having sleepless nights just to make sure that I sleep well. Thanks again! For being there for me, from the moment I have stepped outside.
To love me unconditionally
To hold me when am scared.
To be there for me every time
This list will never end. I am lucky that you made me feel special. You are the best. I need you. Hold me tight in your arms. Allow me to hear your heartbeat and to check if it beats in the same rhythm as mine. Love you!
Love your Jaadu ki thapki (Magical patting)! I don't need a lullaby or goodnight kiss. Just hold me tight in your arms.
This would be the words from my six-month-old baby to his dad if he could talk like us. At present, he can only do blabbering, aha aaha..bla bla..gaa ga...and much more. But being his mom, I have felt it. Every dad is every child's superhero. Similarly, my baby has found his one too within a few hours of his birth. I know this baby's dad for the past four years, but I never knew this dad before. Anyways, as the below mentioned saying:
The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before.
Similarly, I have seen the birth of this new man. He is totally different. Touchwood! He is the most amazing hubby. A caring and loving guy. But being a father, he is like a complete new package. The energy, the care, the love, the protection, the patience level, the possesiveness and much more, everything has doubled up. I have never imagined that he can be like this. After all, this is fatherhood I suppose.
"Fathers, like mothers are not born. Men grow into fathers and fathering is a very important stage in their development." ~ David Gottesman
So truly said, as I have seen the development too. My baby loves to fall asleep in his dad's arms. Sometimes, he will not let him put him down in bed. Being a wifey first, I used to feel bad as he will be tired after office. But over the period of time, I realised that it will be unfair to both if I interfere. After all, its son-dad duo and Jaadu ki thapki (Magical patting) works. So who am I to decide? So the story continues..
Mostly I have seen, babies love to sleep on dad's chest too like my baby. Maybe they feel safe, the cosiness, the warmth or maybe the heartbeat. Something makes them like it more. Whatever it is, but I feel its a bond of love which is magical. A child needs mother and father both. The role played by them is different. We moms shouldn't forget that like motherhood, fatherhood is also a new journey. Men don't carry for nine months but they wait for the baby. Give them time to become the best dad. They need our support and love.
I love my guys!❤ ❤ Cheers to parenting! Cheers to fatherhood! Cheers to motherhood!

Maternity/nursing/feeding bra... Is it really useful and worth the money spent??
Being a mom for the first time, pushed me to do everything perfect. This included getting my hospital bag ready 2mo before the EDD. I preferred everything possible from online shopping portals
It also included maternity bras (2 sets) from one of the best available brand, as suggested by few of my mommy friends. Since I was heavy busted I ordered maximum cup size in it.
However, honestly after holding my lil munchkin in my arms for the feeding I found wearing a regular bra is much more comforting than a nursing bra as marketed or advised by few mothers. I took all.tge efforts to change myself immediately post delivery from normal one to maternity bra so that I can give the best to my angel. But there are two things one need to keep in mind before spending extra pounds on such wears.
Firstly, its new in its concept, material and fit to you and may be painful or difficult for you to adjust in it after delivery adding on to your agony.
Secondly, if you are heavy busted then it may not solve the purpose as free flow of your milk may get restricted. At such times you will find your old regular bra worn during pregnancy much more comforting and convenient compared to this new version
Final verdict:
Though its completely your decision to spend your penny and get the best for your lil angel. However, based on my recent experience, I would suggest to go for your regular bra which you were comfortable with as it was worn and washed, even for nursing instead of a new feeding bra. As new maternity bra might give you a hard time in adjusting for its fitting and comfort. Choose your option wisely as every comforting moment is crucial for you to spend with your bundle of joy especially immediately postpartum Read more
