Your 14 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
It's been nearly three months since you gave birth to your baby, and we are sure that these three months must have been a bit tough for you. You must be still getting used to the new routine with your baby, yes even after 3 months. If your baby has turned 14 weeks recently, you will notice certain changes in him. As he grows, he will start showing that he has his own identity! From having a favourite toy to liking a specific song and looking forward to playing a game are all signs of individuality and you will notice these signs in your baby too.
Your 14-Week-Old Baby's Development
Around completion of three and a half months, your baby will begin to manifest as a person who likes to interact with other people or prefers to spend time with himself. These signs cannot tell whether he will grow up to be an introverted person or extroverted. Some babies prefer a quiet environment - they like to be by themselves or with only a bunch of people while others like to be surrounded by people. Your 14-week-old baby will learn a lot from his surroundings and his brain will process to make sense of it. Certain other aspects of the house will now begin to interest him a lot more and he will be eager to explore the entire space of the house.

Your 14-week-old Baby's Milestones
Below are a few 14-week-old baby milestones you can watch out for in your baby:
With an increased awareness of the limbs, your baby might like a particular hand or finger and keep exploring it. Usually, babies are enthralled by their own feet. Since they are unable to see them, they are curious when they lift their feet up high. When your little one lifts his feet up high, he might want to play around with them or put in his mouth.
The energy level of a baby is high during this time. Your baby will rarely stay still while lying down. He will constantly kick, play with his hands, or blow raspberries.
Your baby's back will gain quite some strength by this time.
His ability to understand that his actions can cause movement or changes in objects will be even stronger now. As with rattles, he will also know to play with the hanging flutes or with mobile screens if they were to lay their hands on one.
When you bring your face closer to him, he might reach out and touch your face and feel it.
Your little one's communication skills will develop too. He will begin to coo and gurgle by this time. Cooing and gurgling are sure to make you smile a lot.
Your baby will have a better idea of who can provide him with what he wants. So, if he’s hungry, he will start making loud sounds and try to look in your direction.
If a new person is introduced or a new toy is brought for him, he will take a long time to keep observing and exploring. He may not instantly be comfortable with the new person but he will want to touch her or feel her.

Feeding
Your baby is growing as he should and his schedule must be finally falling into place. But making strict schedules is not recommended if you have a baby. Your 14-week-old baby may want to be fed in the evening too when most of us tend to snack on something or the other. You will have to balance your own needs and the needs of other family members, along with a baby who suddenly wants to latch onto your breast for a quick snack. In such cases, you could keep breastmilk stored separately and engage either your husband or someone in the family to bottle feed your baby while you take care of the household chores. By this age, your baby may even want to play around or be engaged especially during this time. You can take your baby for a quick walk around the park as it will soothe him and keep him occupied.

Sleeping
By 14 weeks, your baby's sleeping pattern will not have fallen into a predictable schedule. He will wake up at night if and when he feels hungry. As your baby is growing and is trying different activities, he will need more energy, hence he will feed often. Hearing about other babies already sleeping through the night or having predictable sleep times can make you wonder if you are doing something wrong. But you must understand that each and every child has different physiology and different needs. One could want to sleep through the day and wake up at night while the other may remain awake during the day time and sleep through the night. In either case, there should be a period of time when the baby sleeps for a longer duration, which should not be interrupted since maximum growth occurs then.

Tips to Take Care of Your 14-week-old Baby
Here are some tips that you should follow to take care of your 14-week-old baby.
Your baby might take some more time to be able to do all the things that other babies do. Do not worry about it and let him progress at his own pace.
Certain babies might seem to depict a change in the colour of their irises. As long as this does not accompany redness in the eye and irritation in the child, it isn’t an infection and is just a normal sign.
Keep formula milk and breastmilk at hand so that it can be quickly mixed in the bottle and given to your child if you are too busy with something else.

Tests and Vaccinations
Following the previous week of vaccines, in the 14th week, there are another bunch of vaccines that need to be administered to a baby. Get your child administered all the necessary vaccines and on time, as these will keep him healthy and protect him from illnesses while boosting his immunity. The triple vaccine that takes care of diphtheria and polio will be administered too. This is the DPT/IPV/HIB vaccine.
Another vaccine that necessitates its presence is the PCV vaccine, which is at its 3rd time of administering to your child. Yet another one at its 3rd dosage is the rotavirus vaccine, which may be given orally this time around, too. All these vaccines might result in a slight fever in your child which is absolutely normal.
Games and Activities
Your baby’s upper body strength will be developed quite a bit and his neck muscles will be strong too. He may be able to keep his neck upright and look around for a longer time with ease. Hold your baby on the shoulder and fly him around the house while making whoosh and airy sounds. By holding in such a way that he faces backwards, the experience of going in a reverse direction could cause quite a riot and leave him laughing and giggling. If you are a fitness enthusiast and have a gym ball or a large inflatable ball, you can hold your baby and place him on it. Then gently roll the ball in various directions and let your little one sway and move slightly on each side.
Peek-a-boo is always successful with all babies no matter the age. And now that your baby can look around a bit, it is time to take the game to the next level. Keep your baby upright, supported with some pillows, and securely placed so that he won’t roll over. Let him face the hall or the room. You can then use all methods to hide and make sounds, only to pop out from a different corner and surprise him. Bending under the bed or hiding behind the sofa, and then emerging from the door or the other end of the sofa, will seem quite magical to your baby and make his day.

When to Consult a Doctor
As your child will be different vaccines around this time, chances are that he will have a slight fever. Fever is a side effect of vaccines and there is nothing to worry about. However, if the fever lasts long and is more than 100.5 degrees or so, you should consult a doctor. Furthermore, if your child is vomiting, you should consult a doctor immediately.
Also, if your baby has trouble holding things firmly or doesn’t seem to have any coordination in understanding how to hold a small toy or so, get a paediatrician to examine him for any developmental disorder or condition.
From this time onwards, your child will grow physically, emotionally, and socially. His personality will start forming too. Make sure you constantly encourage your child to try out new things. Keep a positive atmosphere at home and your child will be happy!

How to Lose Weight for Kids- 10 Easy Ways
Weight problems in kids is a growing cause of concern worldwide. It has led to a rise in childhood diabetes, cholesterol, osteoporosis, fatty liver, asthma, heart ailments etc. These diseases that usually occur during adulthood are now appearing during childhood. Obese kids are also more prone to bullying, body-image anxiety, insecurities and depression.
Weight loss in kids should be done with care and caution. Parents must create a safe and sensitive weight loss plan in consultation with their paediatrician. This is because a random weight loss plan can hamper the kid’s nutrition, growth and stress levels. Moreover, what works for adults does not work for kids because their body is still developing.
How do you Know whether your Child has a Weight Problem?
Understanding whether your child has weight problems is the first step to a proper plan. This is important because kids grow at different rates. It is best to consult your paediatrician to check the child’s Body Mass Index (BMI), that measures their weight against height, gender and age. Here is a quick guide about what percentile of BMI can indicate that your child has weight problems:
BMI between 5th and 84th percentile: Healthy
BMI between 85th and 94th percentile: Overweight
BMI at the 95th percentile or more: Obese
Weight Loss Tips for Kids
Your paediatrician can give your kids advice on how to lose weight as a child.Together you can draw up a personalised plan that is suitable for your child. Here are the top 10 recommendations:
1. Calorie Count
You should not eliminate calories from the kid’s diet at random because they give energy and have other essential health benefits. You need to know exactly how much calorie your kid needs for proper growth. Anything more than that will hinder weight loss. The amount of calorie that a child needs varies according to age, gender, BMI, activity etc. Don’t stress the child by daily weight checks at home because it deviations on a daily basis are natural.
2. Low-Glycemic Diet
You don't need to totally eliminate carbs from your kid's diet. All you need to do, is select low-or medium-glycemic carbs like broccoli, carrots, apples, berries, beans, nuts, peanut butter, plain yogurt with honey and fruits, milk, cheese, pineapple, sweet potatoes, banana, dried fruit, pasta, high-fiber cereal, brown rice, and ice cream. Avoid high-glycemic carbs like corn, potatoes, white rice, French fries, chips, juice, jam, sweet and frozen yogurt, breads, pancakes, waffles, pizza, popcorn, instant oats, and some cereals. The glycemic level is the rate at which carbohydrate rich food converts to glucose. Studies suggest that low-glycemic food keeps a kid full longer and happier because it takes longer to digest and blood sugar stays stable. They also have more fiber and are less processed.
3. More Fruits, Veggies
Generally, you can add more vegetables and fruits of many colours to your kid’s diet. Serve whole fruits rather than fruit juices. This is because juices have more calories, while whole fruits are more filing and fiber-rich that is good for digestion. However, not all fruits and veggies are good for weight loss. Some may be high glycemic, that we have discussed in the point above.
4. More Water
Don’t allow the child to drink juice, energy and cold drinks, soda etc. when they are thirsty because they cause weight gain. The best thirst-quencher is water.
5. Good Sleep
Ideally, kids need 10 hours of sleep and teenagers need 9 hours of sleep. Early and good sleep is essential for proper nutrition and metabolism that helps maintain body weight.
6. Minimize Sugar, Salt
Minimize high sugar content food like candies, sweetened breakfast cereals, flavored drinks and yogurt, sweetened beverages, fruit juice, soda drinks etc. Settle for low-sugar substitutes like home-made fruit puree; fruit ice pops; cookies, pizzas, sandwiches made of whole-wheat; fruit salads etc. Even salt needs to be minimized. The sodium content of salt makes the body retain water and bloat up. Avoid table salt and canned and frozen food that are high on sodium.
7. More Protein
Experts recommend that protein stimulates a hormone that helps the body break down excess fat into energy. It is also more filling. Serve eggs, plant protein, fish and lean meat like chicken. Go for low-fat yogurt, butter, cheese, margarine etc. for milk protein.
8. Meal Plans
Avoid long gaps between meals because an empty stomach for long hours leads to gorging during meals. Studies recommend that that three small meals and two small snacks daily is ideal.
9. Daily Exercises/Sports
Exercise or some sporting activity for at least 60 minutes daily is recommended. Start with 15-20 minutes daily and increase the duration gradually. Make it entertaining by including your child’s peers or organizing a dance and music session, running with a pet dog, a family swimming session etc. This will encourage the child to participate enthusiastically. Some of the good exercises for kids to lose weight are:
Gymming
Swimming
Cycling
Dancing
Running
Roller-skating
Aerobics
Any kind of sports after school
10. Understand Fat Facts
All fats aren’t harmful. Healthy fats are required by the body to create cell membranes. Eliminating fat at random can impact your kid’s immune system, nervous system, and overall health. They need to consume fats like unsaturated oils (olive, canola, soybean etc.), salmon, anchovy, almonds, seeds of sesame, pumpkin, and flax etc. Fats also slow down digestion and keep the stomach full for longer hours.
Do and Don'ts
There are a few things that you should keep in mind during your kid’s weight loss program:
Do’s
Make changes in habits like daily exercise. No binging on unhealthy junk and no eating meals while watching TV to avoid overeating, etc.
Be supportive. Studies suggest that less sugar increases stress hormones and makes the kid cranky. Reward the child for weight loss achievements with a movie show, a toy etc. However, do not reward them with their favorite food.
Add errands to their daily schedule, encourage them to take the stairs rather than the lift, walk to a nearby kid’s activity zone rather than take the car etc. Make activities fun-filled with boot camps, nature walks, etc.
Reduce the portions, do not eliminate meals. A researcher at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge suggests that it’s not what you eat, but the quantity is what matters when trying to lose weight.
Substitute junk with healthy home-made snacks like raita, sprout salad, baked (not fried) papad, ragi dosa, grilled chicken strips etc. Sliced and diced carrots, cucumber, grapes, strawberries, watermelon etc. can be healthier finger food.
Don'ts
Don’t make unrealistic plans. So, if your child likes eating something that is against the weight loss plan, don’t eliminate it totally. That may stress the child and add to weight gain. Do it gradually. Also set an attainable weight loss goal. A good, recommended rate is one pound (Approx 0.453592 kg) of weight loss per week.
Do not allow kids to watch TV, play video games and couch around for hours. Ideally, restrict it to one to two hours a day.
Don’t make kids-only diet, work as a team. Include family and friends. You can yourself stick to food that is beneficial for you. Set an example for the child to keep him motivated. You could also throw a birthday party with all healthy snacks and set the trend.
Don’t give up! Tell the child things won’t change overnight.
Don’t rush! Do not go for a fast-track weight loss program. It can do more harm than good.
What are the Dangers of Fast Weight Loss for Kids?
To begin with, approach the subject of weight loss with care and sensitivity. It should be an open dialogue that addresses weight-related concerns and insecurities of the child. It is seen that many kids, especially girls, try to experiment with weight loss on their own. This could be unscientific and harmful. Watch out for that and educate them.
Please note that your kid may have some underlying health condition causing weight gain like Cushing's syndrome, hypothyroidism, and medication side effects etc. So, please consult your pediatrician before you begin their weight loss journey.

Are You Thinking About Having a Baby? Key Things to Keep in Mind
Planning for a baby and getting ready for pregnancy is perhaps the biggest life-changing step you are ever going to make. If you have a baby on the mind, then it probably means you are at the stage in your marriage and life where you are ready to take the plunge. You are thinking about starting a family soon, then it probably also means that you are mentally prepared to take your life and relationship to a whole new level. But now that you are mentally prepared is your body really prepared to take the big step? Let me tell you this while the decision of having a baby can be frightening overwhelming, having the right information can save you from a bumpy ride and make the journey rather smooth.
Creating and growing a life inside you takes a great deal of responsibility on the mother’s part. A mother needs to provide the unborn baby with a healthy environment required for its healthy growth and development. So let me share with you how I prepared myself and embarked on this beautiful journey.
The 3 Key Steps in Planning for a Pregnancy Involve
1. Preparing Your Mind for Pregnancy
As I already said, being ready mentally marks the first and the biggest step towards starting a family. Having a child, without a doubt, is a lifetime commitment and calls for responsibility on the part of both the partners. So it’s time you thought it through. If either of the partners is unsure or having second thoughts about it, it’s important to reconsider your decision. Having a baby should be a mutual decision involving the consent of both the partners and both should be equally committed to being parents. Therefore, it is very important to have an honest discussion and be open about each other’s thoughts on having a child. Neither should you force or get pressurized yourself or even resort to emotional blackmailing and stuff. If both partners aren’t unanimous over the decision, it is best to hold it off for some time.
2. Preparing Yourself Financially
Starting a family also calls for considering your money matters. Prenatal checkups, prenatal vitamins, medicines, tests, procedures and other medical bills can account for a major part of your salary. So it is best to be prepared for it beforehand so as not to put an unnecessary delay on anything. Opting for a good health insurance (if not already) is always a good bet to cover your prenatal expenses and lift some of the financial load off your shoulders.
3. Preparing Your Body for Pregnancy
So now that you are mentally and financially ready, it’s time to take the next big step which is getting your body ready for the life that you are going to grow inside you. Here’s how you can do that:
(a) Scheduling a pre-conception visit
Visiting a good gynaecologist from the very beginning is a good idea to start a healthy pregnancy. A pre-conception check-up involves reviewing your personal and family medical history by your doctor. The practitioner will take a detailed account of your personal health, any kind of medication you’re taking which may be unsafe for the pregnancy and also about any unhealthy habit you have, such as smoking, drinking, etc. She would discuss with you about the tests and immunization which need to be done and also recommend you prenatal vitamins. Choosing a good and trusting doctor plays a key role in planning for a baby because only a good and experienced doctor can make you at ease and guide you properly through your journey.
(b) Starting on prenatal vitamins
Ideally, it’s said that starting on a folic acid supplement of 400 micrograms (mcg) a day, 6 months before you plan on conceiving is very crucial to carry a healthy pregnancy. But if not started earlier, at least 1 month prior to conceiving is a must. This not only prepares your body for conception but also prevents your baby from having certain birth defects, including a neural-tube defect like spina bifida to a great extent.
(c) Following a healthy lifestyle
Since you are trying to conceive and nurture a life inside you it is utmost important that you maintain a healthy lifestyle. It’s time you stopped your unhealthy habits such as smoking or drinking, cut short your caffeine intake, and check binging on junk food. Instead, it would be great if you started making healthy and nutritious food choices very early in your journey so that your body gets packed with the necessary nutrients you need to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Try to incorporate a balanced amount of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and milk and milk products in your diet. If you are a non-vegetarian intake of eggs, poultry, meat and fish are also a great choice. But it should be borne in mind that milk, meat and fish should come from a pasteurized source, disease-free animals and non-contaminated water respectively. You should also give doing yoga and/or moderate exercise a thought for a well-rounded fitness and a healthy body. You should also avoid working in a hazardous and unhygienic environment to avoid infections.
(d) Trying actively and tracking your cycles
If you are on birth control pills it’s time to stop those and bid adieu to any other kind of contraception you might have been using, and actively try (meaning every other day). Women on pills may take a month or two before they start ovulating again. Although some would prefer a more calculated approach of keeping a track of the ovulation dates and fertile window, I suggest it’s best to actively involve every other day if your cycles are sporadic just like mine. While keeping a record of your cycles is equally important to get a clear picture of your fertility days, doing it every other day increases your chances of conceiving. But it does not mean you have to mechanically do it. It should involve love and passion and you should enjoy it. It isn’t called “lovemaking” for no reason.
(e) Aiming for a healthy weight
Women with a higher or lower body mass index (BMI) may find it a little difficult to conceive. Starting off with a healthy weight right from the beginning not only helps you in conceiving more easily, but it also helps you to avoid weight-related complications in pregnancy and prevent you from delivering a premature or an underweight baby. Women with higher weight are also associated with risks of high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, etc. So weight goals should be kept at aim right from the start.
(f) Keeping updated on immunization and vaccinations
It would be a plus point if you are updated on your immunization of flu shots, chicken pox, rubella (German measles) etc. It would help to avoid any complications during pregnancy which might lead to miscarriage, birth defects or stillbirth.
So these are some of my experiences and learning which I am happy to share in the hope to guide you and prove helpful in your journey towards a happy and healthy pregnancy. Making a right start at the right time can help you get the right results. But make sure to follow and maintain the same healthy lifestyle during as well as post-pregnancy.

Baba or Baby? What You Must Know About Cross-Dressing Your Child
Do you love dressing your four-year-old boy in a dress for fun? Baby cross-dressing should have certain limitations. Do immediately take a picture of him and post it online. Take stock of the situation before you post anything, lest you're disturbed by the reactions from the world.
If you think it's cute to cross-dress your child, go for it. However, if you're planning on taking him out in public looking like that, make sure it’s for a fancy dress competition. Here are some points to consider before you switch genders with clothing and make a spectacle of your "supposed cutesy' endeavour.
Factors to keep in Mind About Cross-Dressing Your Child
1. An Occasional Event
Some moms like baby cross-dressing for a little fun once in a while. However, try not to do it in the presence of neighbours. Don't make it a habit to make your kid cross-dress as someone from the opposite sex frequently. It could confuse your child and maybe make him a butt of jokes when he grows up.
2. Playing Dress-up, Everyday
If you make cross-dressing a habit, it could spell trouble on your child's psyche. Your little boy or girl might slip into your room once in a while to try on your dresses or raid daddy's wardrobe. This might not come across as odd when your child's young, but quite awkward if your boy or girl continues to cross-dress when they grow up. Dressing your girl up as a boy for a fancy dress competition or play in school is fine, but continuing it on a regular basis is not.
3. Don’t Make it Specific
Are you specifically shopping for dresses for your little boy? If yes, you need to stop right away. The compulsion to pick up dresses could stem from a deep-seated need to have a baby girl. If you require professional help, get it. The once-in-a-while cross-dressing stint could snowball into something life-altering. Your little boy might want to even wear those outfits to school. This could expose him to school bullying – the cause of most child suicides around the world.
4. Sports Related
If you happen to have a little girl, dressing her up in boys sports clothing for a game is fine. Restrict the boys’ clothes to games only. Allow her to choose dresses and cute clips to express her sense of fashion. When you give her the freedom to choose what she wants, she will be keen on wearing it. If she has regular games at schools, she might not want to look at her jerseys once she’s back home.
5. No Advertising
There's no need to publicise your cross-dressed baby's pictures. Taking pictures and posting it on social media sites can lead to a backlash. Your friends and family could come down hard on you. Nosy neighbours might share those pictures with each other while their kids could jeer at your little one at school. You need to be careful what you share in the virtual world.
Playing around with the idea of cross-dressing your baby is fun. However, see that they don’t get too attached to the idea of cross-dressing. Breaking the habit can be quite difficult. A photo-op only for a day is advisable. Read more

How to Help Distracted Toddlers?
Toddlers can get easily distracted. Toddlerhood is a stage when kids start learning to concentrate on a single activity for shorter durations of time. Here are a few tips on how you can help your toddler stay focused.
Distraction as a parenting strategy can work very well for dealing with undesirable behaviour in toddlers. When it comes to distractions, there are some kids who seem to struggle more than others. As a child grows up, distraction can turn into a problem if he finds it difficult to focus even for shorter periods of time. Concentration is an important lesson he needs to learn at this stage.
Some Tips to Deal with Distracted Children
1. Limit Media Interactions
Modern technology is all great; in today’s times they can add on the score of distractions for children. The first step you need to take is to limit your child’s media interaction time. Cut down on his screen time, as well as his every day television viewing and mobile phone usage. Pediatrics caution parents about early exposure to television and its association with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. Passive viewing and constant buzz in the background can further distract an fidgety toddler from concentrating. Whether he is busy with building blocks, looking at a picture book, playing with dough or putting together simple puzzles, background noises can be quite disruptive. You must also avoid installing a television in your child’s room.
2. A Peaceful Home Environment
Make sure your home environment isn't noisy or turbulent. This means less yelling between adults at home. A calm environment will help your child focus, though it is easy said than done. Toddlers can literally try out your patience. If you yell at them, do not forget to apologise later, and also explain why you did it.
3. Praise your Child More Often
Positive reinforcement works well for children. Each time a child completes simple tasks that require some amount of concentration, do not forget to praise him. A happy and secure child is less likely to get distracted.
4. Ensure that your Child does not Suffer from an Eye/Ear Problem
Get your child’s eyesight and hearing tested. Lack of hearing or clear vision will result in him losing interest, and it can lead to a loss of interest in every day activities.
5. Give Clear and Short Instructions
Toddlers are in their learning phase of listening to, and understanding instructions. Talk to them in short and firm sentences so that they clearly understand what you expect out of them. Too many instructions bundled up in a sentence will only serve to confuse them.
6. Set Aside Special Time for Your Child
Set aside some time every day when you are able to give complete attention to your child. Listen to him talk, read a story or play a sport with him/her.
7. Make Physical Activity a Part of Daily Routine
Enrol your child in a physical activity class. Playing a sport has multiple benefits. Most importantly, it helps an active child channelize his excess energy, ensuring better focus when he gets back to more passive pursuits.
8. Be Consistent in Enforcing Discipline
Nothing is more confusing for a child than a set of changing or conflicting rules. Have a few rules, but stick to them. Also, make sure you and your spouse or other caregivers enforce the same rules with the same amount of firmness. Any kind of ambiguity will lead to confusion in the child.
Not only is a distracted child more difficult to handle, but distraction is also a huge impediment to learning at different stages of life. By making a few lifestyle changes, and following some simple rules without much of a budge, you can ensure that your child learns to focus better, which in turn will help your child in the long run. A. since the follicle size is 18 to 20 mm your ovulation may occur within 24 hours also so if you have intercourse with in that time it will be more effective to get conceived
your endometrial growth is not good enough for conception but still you can just try

A. Hello dear! If your pregnancy is going on fine without any high risk factors then it’s okay. Still, would advise you to check with your doctor once before going further. Maintain a good personal hygiene routine and a healthy lifestyle
