How to tell if your baby has colic?
Dietitian Srishti Arora
How To Tell If Your Baby Has Colic

Eat, sleep, poop, cry, and repeat! That is what a usual newborn’s schedule looks like. A few weeks into it, you find yourself in a hopeless situation with your baby crying, even wailing, non-stop with clenched fists and a troubled face. Just the sight tears your heart apart.
No matter what you try, you can’t comfort your baby. And the crying episodes continue every day at the same time. This seems like it goes on forever, especially when you are already exhausted. So, what is it you are missing?
The usual suspect here is colic.
What Is Colic?
Babies communicate by crying; that’s the only way they know. And as parents, you tune into your parental intuitions to respond to them in the best way possible to meet their needs.
But when the crying occurs for no obvious reason in an otherwise healthy baby, this means colic. Colic is not a disease but a predictable period of significant stressing and crying in a healthy baby. It occurs in roughly 1 in 5 infants. Colic episodes often start between late evenings and late nights, when parents themselves are already tired. With no solution other than passing the time to soothe the baby, this only adds to the frustration and exhaustion.
However, there’s a thumb rule for establishing colic in babies: it occurs at least three hours a day, three days a week, and continues for at least three weeks.
How to Spot Colic in Your Baby?
Trying to decode the cries doesn’t come naturally right at the start. But with these symptoms, you can spot colic in your baby and waste no time soothing them.
The baby cries for around three hours a day, three days a week, and for three or more weeks.
The crying episodes occur at the same time, every day, often in the evening.
The crying is intense, more like screaming or wailing, often coupled with an expression of pain.
The baby may cry for no apparent reason, unlike crying for a diaper change or hunger.
The baby may clench their fists, stiffen their legs and arms, arch their backs, or often move their arms and legs.
Facial discolouration, such as skin flushing, may occur.
There may be an increase in bowel activity. Babies relieve after spitting up or passing gas, which results from swallowing air during crying.
The baby may show fussiness even after they have stopped crying.
They may have a light sleep between crying, only to wake up, seek a nipple, reject it, and cry again.
Is There Any Difference Between Colic Crying and Normal Crying?
There isn’t any clear definition to determine the difference between colic and normal crying. However, experts suggest that colicky babies tend to cry louder, in a more intense and high-pitched voice, like they are in some pain. They are inconsolable and cry for longer hours as compared to normal crying, in which babies stop crying after their needs are taken care of.
Causes of Colic
To pinpoint the exact cause of colic is difficult. Experts are sure that colic is not genetic, nor is the result of anything that happened during pregnancy or childbirth. Some possible theories that contribute to the cause of colic are:
An immature digestive system may cause acid reflux, indigestion, or gas in babies.
Overstimulation of senses may cause a baby to stress.
Infrequent burping and gas.
Intolerance or allergy to lactose or formula that may cause stomach ache.
Childhood migraine.
A nervous system that isn’t fully developed.
Treatments and Methods to Treat Colic in Babies
Let’s look at some ways to give your baby some relief from colic.
Practices to Soothe Your Baby
Attend to Your Baby: Respond to your baby’s cries as this may help with the overstimulation. Holding, rocking and patting your baby can lessen their cries and make them feel more secure.
Create a Calm Space: Limit guests and strangers around your baby and create a peaceful environment for them to relax. Keep distractions to the minimum. Sing or talk to your baby in a soothing voice while you rock or walk with them. You can also use white noise using a white noise machine, a vacuum cleaner, or a ceiling fan.
Try Swaddling: Swaddle your baby in a warm blanket or keep them close to your chest. This will make them feel secure and safe.
Colic Carry and Burping: Apply pressure to your baby’s tummy or try colic carry. Place your baby on the tummy and gently rub or pat their back to release the pressure in their stomach. You can also help your little one burp to release gas and reduce fussiness.
Pacifier: The sucking reflex is calming for babies when they are irritable. A pacifier can help self-soothe themselves.
Medications: Ask your paediatrician for anti-gas drops or probiotics to relieve gas pain, only if necessary. Remember never to give any medication without consulting a doctor.
Feeding Practices to Calm Your Baby
Gripe Water: For generations, many parents have sworn by gripe water to treat gas, acid reflux, indigestion, and discomfort in infants and babies. Gripe water is an Ayurvedic formulation, not a medication, comprising a mix of natural ingredients, such as Dil Seed oil, Sarjikakshara, etc. Woodward’s Gripe Water is a safe formulation that has been trusted for ages and continues to do so by soothing colicky babies. It is formulated especially for babies to treat their tender stomachs and protect them from several gastrointestinal issues.
Ask About Changing Baby Formula: If you bottle-feed, you may ask your paediatrician to switch the formula brand or your formula with hypoallergenic whey baby formula.
Check Your Diet: If you are breastfeeding, you can ask your doctor to eliminate those food items from your diet that are likely to cause allergies or gas, such as cabbage, cauliflower, nuts, eggs, and dairy.
Position: Try feeding your baby in an upright position as it may help with burping and releasing gas.
Things Parents Need to Take Care Of
Caring for a colicky baby can be stressful and exhausting and may provoke anxiety in parents. Here are a few tips for parents to tone down their anxiety and focus well on treating their babies:
Give Yourself a Break: Take turns with your spouse to soothe your baby through the night. You can also ask a friend or family member to take care of the baby while you catch up on some well-deserved and much needed rest.
It’s Not Your Fault: Don’t be too harsh on yourself, as colic in your baby is not your fault. It is a natural process that comes and goes away on its own.
Remind Yourself It’s Temporary: Colic episodes decline as the baby grows. So, be strong and prepare yourself well.
Take Care of Your Health: Taking care of your baby does not mean cutting up on your health. You must eat healthily, go for brisk walks or practice soothing yoga or meditation.
Talk About It: There’s nothing wrong with talking about your feelings. You can talk to your spouse, friends, parents, paediatrician, or a therapist. Talking will put your emotions out front and give you a clear vision of the situation.
When to Call the Doctor
The best approach to diagnose colic is by consulting a paediatrician. They will rule out any underlying potential cause and treat colic quickly. You must also contact your doctor if:
Your baby’s crying is accompanied by fever, diarrhoea, less movement, or vomiting.
Your baby’s crying has changed suddenly.
The colic phase is challenging for both babies and parents. But the important aspect is that it does not last forever. During this time, your little one needs your love and care to feel secure and peaceful. With the above tried and tested strategies like keeping Woodward’s gripe water at home for unexpected colic episodes and swaddling your baby in a warm blanket, you can soothe your baby quickly and pass this phase like a breeze. For any doubts you may have, it is best to consult your paediatrician.

There is no doubt that earaches are usually troublesome for everyone and more so for kids. In instances where a child wakes up at night owing to severe ear pain, parents can feel helpless about not only providing relief but also in identifying the cause in the first place. However, there are ways that parents can help ease the pain and hold the fort till morning before they seek a doctor's assistance. Most types of ear pain do not warrant antibiotics. Home-based remedies can bring considerable relief.
What are the Possible Causes of Ear Pain in Children?
Some of the possible causes of ear pain in children at night can be:
Middle ear (area behind the eardrum) infection caused either by bacteria or viruses
Swimmer’s ear which is an infection of the ear canal lining
Common cold
Pain from another body part like a sore throat, an infected tooth, or a tonsil infection
Ear canal injury owing to a likely scrape from a fingernail or a cotton swab
Ear canal abscess which is usually an infection that develops in the ear canal
A blockage caused by a huge chunk of hard earwax
Pierced ear infections
Aeroplane ear when ear tubes get blocked due to a sudden rise in air pressure causing eardrums to stretch
How Can You Help Your Child Get through the Night When He Has Ear Pain?
Some useful tips which may aid your kid to pass the night in case of ear pain can be:
In case of ear pain at night, medicine can be a good option to bring some relief from the ear pain. You can offer your child an apt dose of any child-safe over-the-counter pain killer like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen.
Home remedies include the use of a warm compress. You can use a clean, warm washcloth or a heating pad for this purpose. Apply it to your child’s ear to alleviate the pain and discomfort.
Elevating the child’s head and keeping the sore ear side facing upward may bring respite from child ear pain at night.
Provide plenty of fluids to your child or have him chew gum to support swallowing as it may unblock the Eustachian tube by draining excess fluid if it is present in the middle ear.
Applying tea tree oil as ear drops for ear pain can also be considered. Tea tree oil has potent antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic qualities which may prove beneficial in relieving ear pain. Be sure to mix a few drops of olive oil with tea tree oil before applying it.
At times ear pain can get triggered by some compression in the ear canal. Neck rotation exercises can significantly reduce the pressure and lessen the pain.
When to Call the Doctor?
Not all earaches need instant medical attention. However, you may want to call the doctor in the following cases:
If your child accidentally lodged some toy or object in his ear earlier in the day
If your child seems to have a stiff neck (unable to bend chin to touch the chest) and severe earache
If you notice swelling, redness behind the ear or on the skin
If your child is running a constant high fever
If you see blood or pus draining from his ear
If your child appears weak and very sick
Ear pain can give the entire household a sleepless night. It is important to note that an earache does not necessarily mean an infection. So, refrain from administering any antibiotics to your child unless recommended by your doctor.

Woman transforming as MOM, doesn’t it sound like Hero transforming as Superhero
During my schooling & at younger age, I would always define my mom as the most beautiful women in the world. Because beauty is what expected from women.
But perceptions change & when you grow older you realise whoa mom is. To be precise, when you become a mom, you realise howa mom could be defined.
Weall knew that God has created womenso strongthat we could bear the pain of child birth. Iwouldsay the most painful moment than child birthis when you know that you couldn’t have a babyonyour own.
That really kills a woman more hardly.
Me, aged 27,well educated, fit, energetic, career orientedworking professional getting married is quite agreed &acceptable. But what if God hadsome other plans.Yes, Iwas diagnosed with endometriosis stage 4
at25. Iwas in medication for 2 years, later went through a surgery as a temporary fix. Soon in 6 months, decidedto get married and have a baby in the ‘so called’ golden period. But It didn’t work in that way.
It may look like getting pregnant is as simple as eating an ice creambut only doctors and woman know how hard it Is.The compromises you have to make, the sacrifices, the limitations in everything especiallywould really change you for
sure. How would you feel when you are not given ice cream or chicken for 3 long years when you damn love it. A girl trying to get pregnant especially when she is desperate to, know all the do’s and dont’s and tricks to eat pregnant. Girls are masters
when they want something desperately. Isn’t it? I was one among them.
Yearpassed by, Ihad regular checkup’s with her gynaecologist and fertility expert, where trying all possible treatments, they informed methat Icouldn’t conceive spontaneously. I was left with no option that to go with a test tube
baby as all my overies and Fallopian tubes are stuck together. That’s a total devastation on hearing it.Have you ever faced any situation where you wanted to cry aloud, but still give a fake cute smile in your face? Yes Ileft the
hospital the same way assuring mygyne to return in couple of months to proceed with IVF.
Months passed, I stopped being desperate over pregnancy, went with the flow, 6 months just fled. I even stopped thinking what would happen next where God pitched in. Do you people believe in real magic? I do, because I conceived spontaneously. I usually
don’t try these pregnancy confirmation kits even if my dates extend for few days. When I wanted to get pregnant and when my dates delayed, I tried them twice and felt bad seeing the negative results. But this time it worked and could see those two
pink lines. The real joy is when God gives you what you really want.
I still remember the day when I went for consultation in dilemma, the doctor hearing my positive test, she bowed down and was shouting in joy that real miracles happen. During the scan, there were panel of doctors Looking into the monitor
and discussing how that could really happen. They all congratulated me shouting that’s a warrior inside me growing up.
I always prayed for a healthy baby with 40 weeks of pregnancy.Though I didn’t have a heathy pregnancy, had to face lotsof health isssues. During 7th month of pregnancy, due to hormone changes and baby growth, health was becoming worse. It
was 26weeks of pregnancy, where I was told the issue is little critical as my cysts were 8 cm and I have severe hydronephrosis. All I wanted was to hold my baby till 40 weeks for the complete growth. But due to worsened health, I was hospitalised
&I delivered my baby by 31 st week. I couldn’t hold my baby longer. I cried loudly on why this is all happening to me and how much I should tolerate for all the abnormal things. I was more concerned on my baby’s health as she weighed only
1.54 kgsand couldn’t breath normally and was rushed to NICU.
When I first saw my babyin NICU, she was tiny, all summed with artificial respirator, tubes in her mouth, taken lines in her tiny palms, I was totally broken. I had no option than to cry. I was also getting treated for my health, which was pissing
me off.
You know what made me gain confidence in that broken situation. That’s my mom, who held me, gave me strength that I will be ok and I am gonna rock my motherhood. Not everyone will be given such babies, if God has given you one, better get up & fight
the battle for your baby, that’s what she told me.
A pre maturebaby in NICU for nearly a month, isn’t easy for a mother.
I wanted to be there for my baby. Fought the Real battle, strengthened my little one during her time in hospital, as how my mom strengthened me.
I got my baby with 1.5 kgsto home after a month along withsleepless nights, post partum pain, depression. Months passed, my baby is 6 months now, being a healthy baby. She is an angel in disguise for me & my family. Now that 6 months of
maternity leave is done& since we are all quarantined., rejoined work.
Me, aged 28+, well educated, out of shape, lazy, grumpy, how should I feel about myself?
I was a woman when getting married, giving birth to a child, I am a MOM now.
But I am already feeling like a Superhero inside.
Whenever my baby girl smiles at me, I feel like I am the most beautiful lady in the planet.
For all you wonderful ladies, no matter how hard the times are, that’s gonna heal.
To sum up, all I would say is you are all already doing an awesome job. Being women is not easy, being mom needs tremendous courage. Believe GOD, believe in your prayers, believe in your thoughts, for god will not abandon you. Your positive thoughts always
have a power.
My mom, the wonderful lady has taught me how isMOM defined. Your strength and attitude as a mother is what makes you real beautiful. Ireally have a very long way to go with my baby girl.
