8 Weeks Pregnant with Twins or Multiples
When you come to know that you are expecting twins or multiple babies, you are nervous and excited at the same time. By the time you complete two months of your pregnancy, the continued onslaught of nausea and morning sickness and the irritation will reduce and your belly will start showing. As you see your belly, you will start thinking about raising your kids and the different preparations you will have to do to make sure that your little ones are comfortable. All these preparations are necessary but you must not stress yourself instead take one step at a time. By 2 months of pregnancy, i.e 8 weeks, your tiny twins or multiples will undergo a significant development. Find out by 8 weeks how much your kids will have developed.
Baby Growth at 8 Weeks
Around the 8th week of pregnancy, a lot of important organs and physical attributes of the babies start developing in a strong and consistent manner. The neural growth is the most important in this regard and the brain undergoes a substantial progress. The newly formed nerve cells that constitute the majority of the brain, start reaching out to each other and create numerous branches and connections. This is primarily what helps their brain function and the existence of such neural pathways contributes to it.
The formation of eyes already begins a couple of weeks ago, however, it isn’t that evident. By the 8th week of pregnancy, eyelids begin to form in a translucent tissue-like material and begin to cover the eyes of your babies.
The growth of limbs is substantial as well. Although the hands and arms are yet to develop completely, the flexing that occurs at the wrist is very much present and they are positioned closer to the heart. Their fingers also continue to grow. By the 8th week, their arms and legs develop and start bending as well too. Most babies tend to start showing a knee that can be recognized by a doctor in the scan. Certain babies have a larger feet growth, which can make the legs long enough to be bent in the front of the body.
Size of the Babies at 8 Weeks
If your twins or multiples were barely the size of a seed or a pea in the previous weeks, the growth in the 8th week will make them as large as a kidney bean. Most growth is only around a millimetre on a daily basis, which might not seem much, but is substantially large when compared to their overall size. Your twins or triplets will also start gaining some weight.
Common Bodily Changes
Most of the changes that occur in twins or triplets in the womb are internal, while their physical growth is slowly moving ahead at its own pace. However, a woman's body will undergo many changes:
If you are pregnant with twins or multiple babies, your waistline will expand. This may not be evident always, but wearing certain pants which fit you comfortably earlier, may feel constricted.
The uterus will begin to increase in size in accordance with the growth of the babies. It may appear larger than an orange and would start pushing into the abdominal space and can be felt from within. These could even result in abdominal cramps and might hurt some women intermittently.
The 2-month mark, in a way, also signals the breasts that they would have to be ready for the babies when the delivery comes through. By this time, your breasts also swell, and the areolas have small bumps around them as they morph in a nature to support lactation of the little ones.
The blood levels in the body increase tremendously, and so do the levels of various hormones, particularly progesterone. These increased hormones further start aggravating the morning sickness symptoms, while a few women might see a reduction in them. The increased blood flow may or may not have enough blood cells in it, which could disturb the brain’s requirement and set in headaches at random times.
Symptoms of Twin Pregnancy at 8 Weeks
The signs of having twins or triplets at 8 weeks get very prominent and you can even celebrate it at the completion of two months if you haven’t done so already. Apart from that, there are tons of other symptoms that get evident at this stage of your journey.
Morning sickness and constant nausea are common pregnancy symptoms, and you will experience it mostly in the first trimester of your pregnancy. But when expecting twins or multiple babies, you will have to bear these for some more time. Your hormones will be at the highest levels and their effect will be compounded as a result of multiple babies. If nausea is too severe for you, going for alternative aromas or eating food items that don’t have strong flavours could help you keep that under control.
As mentioned above, aromas generally work to your benefit but sometimes it could even be the reason to set in nausea. This is primarily due to the fact that your olfactory senses level up and can spot a range of smells than before. Such a change is usually an evolutionary response in keeping yourself and your babies free from any foreign substances that could cause harm.
The increased amount of blood, the extra pumping that your heart undertakes, the headaches, and the intensive tapping into nutrients can make you feel low on energy and a lost-out exhausted mood of sorts. This is pretty natural for women pregnant with twins or multiples.
If your doctor has given the go-ahead to continue with sexual intercourse, there might be occasions when you spot a little bleeding in the vagina. The sensitivity of the cervix is the culprit here.
Another strange sign that many women mention around this stage of the pregnancy is the occurrence of absurd dreams. Some might be ecstatic while others might cause you to wake up sweating. This is basically a result of the changes happening inside your body, and even if you have had a bad dream, there’s no reason to worry about it or be stressed and anxious.
Belly at 8 Weeks Pregnant with Twins
The belly continues to grow larger, a little faster in case of twins and multiples as compared to the usual pregnancies. Your waistline will also expand and the baby bump will start making itself evident since the placenta of the children will gradually take over most of the supporting responsibilities.
8 Weeks Twin Ultrasound
Up until now, you must have believed that the hazy black coloured spots and shapes to be your children only because the doctor said so, but by the 8th week of your pregnancy, you will be able to see the clear pictures of your twins or multiple babies. Undergoing an ultrasound scan at this stage will make it easy for you to spot the babies since their limbs would be better formed than before and would be clearly visible.
What To Eat
Your diet in the 8th week of pregnancy and in fact throughout the pregnancy should constitute of healthy foods. A balanced diet will support the all-round development of your twins or triplets. Protein and calcium intake needs to be substantial since it plays a vital role in the bone and muscle development of the babies. Other vitamins along with iron and a good amount of folic acid are necessary as well. Combining a good nutritive diet with a healthy amount of water can help reduce the chances of constipation.
Pregnancy Care Tips
The 8th week of pregnancy can be tough for women who are pregnant with multiple babies since it takes a lot from their body to keep the babies healthy and to keep their growth on track. But here are a few tips that can make things easier for you.
Dos
Read up on pregnancy from various books or proper websites. These can give you a better idea of how your twins or triplets are growing.
Undertake a full blood and urine exam. This is also a great time to get the blood group of your babies checked and mitigate any complications.
Dont's
Stay away from attempting strenuous exercises in an attempt to keep your weight in check. Eating healthy foods and light exercise is the safest measure for you.
Don’t take any medication for headaches or body pain without checking with your doctor.
What You Need To Shop For
The swelling of the breasts can definitely shift up your cup size by a size or more. So, you must buy good maternity bras, which are a size larger than what you need so that these can be used easily until the end of your pregnancy.
For a woman who is 8 weeks pregnant with twins or triplets, the first couple of months can be quite tough and may worry you about the months to come. However, do not stress yourself, as with time everything will be fine.

Typhoid in Kids - Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
Typhoid is a major health concern in India, and children are more prone to it than adults. This contagious disease spreads through contaminated food and water and is caused by a bacteria known as salmonella typhi. It can impair physical and cognitive development in children. The best way to prevent typhoid is to immunise your baby against it at the right time.
Typhoid Vaccine - What Is It?
Typhoid vaccines help prevent typhoid. Vaccination against this disease is vital, otherwise, it can lead to serious complications. Typhoid is also known to adversely affect young children. There are different types of vaccines available to prevent typhoid - you must always consult your paediatrician to know which would suit your toddler.
Types of Typhoid Vaccinations
Typhoid is a serious problem and should not be taken lightly. There are two types of typhoid vaccinations:
Inactivated Typhoid Vaccine: This vaccine is made from inactive bacteria. It is an injectable vaccine that provides protection. A booster dose is required every 2 years.
Live Typhoid Vaccine (Oral): This vaccine, also called typhoid pills, is made of live, weakened bacteria. It provides protection for about 5 years. It is taken orally as a course of 4 doses in 1 week. It should be followed by booster doses every 5 years.
Who Should Get Immunised Against Typhoid?
Generally, typhoid vaccination is recommended for:
People travelling to and around typhoid-ridden countries like India
People who are in close contact with an infected person
People who work with salmonella typhi bacteria In India
In India, however, routine typhoid vaccination is advised as we are more prone to infections. Typhoid vaccine for babies can be given as early as the age of 9-12 months.
The Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine or TCV is administered when the baby is between 9 and 12 months old, and it must be followed by booster doses every two years.
Typhoid Vaccine Cost in India
You will find Typbar TCV and PedaTyph available in the market currently. Although the cost may vary, the typhoid vaccine cost in India can be anywhere between Rs. 150 and Rs. 525.
(Note: vaccination prices mentioned are for reference only and may vary as per brand and location.)
Typhoid Vaccine Schedule
The typhoid vaccine schedule in India is included in the list of mandatory vaccinations suggested by the paediatrician, right after the birth of a baby. But before giving it to a baby, remember these important things:
Number of Doses
The first dose of the TCV is given at the age of 9-12 months, followed by booster doses every two years.
Recommended Ages
Ideally, the typhoid shot is recommended for children older than 2 years of age. Alternatively, the TCV can be given at the age of 9-12 months.
The schedule for the typhoid vaccine for children is as follows:
Age
Type of Vaccine
Dose
9-12 months
Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV)
First Dose
2 years
TCV
Booster Dose
4 – 6 years
TCV
Booster Dose
In case of the oral typhoid vaccine, a person is given 4 doses of typhoid pills on alternate days for one week. It is followed by booster doses every 5 years. It should only be given to children older than 6 years of age. Always remember to consult a doctor before giving it to a child.
Things to Avoid Before or After Getting the Typhoid Vaccine
Before giving your child a typhoid vaccine, keep these things in mind:
This vaccine cannot be given if your child is allergic to any component of the vaccine. The doctor must be made aware of allergies if any, much before the vaccination is given.
Your child must not be even moderately ill at the time of getting a vaccination.
Anyone who has had a severe reaction to the previous dose of the same vaccine should not be given another dose.
Although the typhoid vaccine is absolutely safe, your child may develop a fever for a day or two after the vaccine is taken. You need not panic. Visit the doctor immediately if the fever persists for too long.
Which Children Should Not Be Given This Vaccine, or Should Wait?
You must keep in mind that the typhoid vaccine for children should not be given before the age of 2 years. In the case of an oral vaccine, you must wait until the child turns 6 years old.
What Happens If Your Child Misses the Dose
If you are worried that your toddler may have missed the vaccine at 9 months, don’t worry – you can still give it to her before she turns one. Moreover, TCV can be given to your child any time after the age of 2 years. Oral typhoid vaccine can be given after a child turns 6 years of age. Ask your paediatrician for more information.
Possible Risks and Side-effects of the Vaccine
The side-effects of the typhoid vaccine are much less dangerous than contracting the infection itself. Typhoid vaccine side-effects are generally mild - they tend to go away in a few days. In rare cases, there may be an allergic reaction. The side-effects have been discussed below:
1. Serious Side Effects
Generally, the typhoid vaccine does not have any serious side-effects. Contact your paediatrician in case of:
Signs of a severe allergic reaction like dizziness, hives, and swelling of the face and throat
Difficulty breathing
Weakness
Very high fever
Changes in behaviour
Although rare, these may manifest within a few hours of taking the vaccination.
2. Less Serious Side Effects
Some less severe side-effects of the typhoid shot are:
Fever
Headache
Redness and swelling
Itching and soreness at the place where the injection is given
General discomfort
For Oral Typhoid Vaccine, besides fever and headache, there may be a chance of:
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Nausea
Abdominal Pain
Rashes
Typhoid is a serious disease that is best prevented in young children. If you are alert and careful, you can ensure your child’s healthy childhood. Regular vaccinations and timely care will help you in doing just that.

Psoriasis in Children
To the untrained eye, Psoriasis might look like a severe case of nappy rash, especially if your little one is not toilet trained. Psoriasis appears in the diaper area for infants, but it can also appear on the face, chest, stomach and on the scalp, which can be easily confused with severe dandruff.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis in babies is an uncommon skin condition that can affect children at an early age, but in most cases, it doesn’t develop until teenage or later. It can be identified by red patches, which are raised and covered with silver scales. It arises due to the rapid growth of skin cells, which build up and shed quicker than usual. Psoriasis appears on the knees and elbows but may spread to other areas such as the armpits, near the bottom and the back of the knees.
Paediatric psoriasis is a rare, inflammatory skin condition, which affects children, in two forms, they are:
Plaque Psoriasis - The most common type appears on children’s knees, scalp, elbows and lower back as scratches covered with flaky, whitish silver scales.
Guttate psoriasis - This type is more prevalent among children than adults. It isn’t as thick or scaly as plaque. It appears on the skin as small dot-like lacerations on the legs and arms.
There are mild, moderate and severe cases of psoriasis. The mild ones only have a few rashes. The moderate covers 3 to 10 percent of the body. The most severe cases cover 10 percent of the body or more with some cases covering the whole body.
Is Psoriasis Common in Children?
Psoriasis in babies can lead to significant psychological harm as they grow up. Studies state that more than 20,000 children are diagnosed with psoriasis, in the United States, every year. Around 0.7% of kids are affected by this disease, globally. About 1 in 10 children develop psoriasis by the age of 10. It is vital to treat childhood psoriasis immediately. Skin conditions can be possibly painful and uncomfortable. They may also make your child feel anxious, worried or sad. Psoriasis has the potential to damage the heart over time.
It can lead to unhealthy changes in blood fats, blood pressure, and insulin levels. When all these occur together it is known as metabolic syndrome. This has been linked to diabetes, and heart problems. Children with psoriasis have been observed to have a higher risk of obesity leading to heart problems.
Is Psoriasis Painful?
Psoriasis is often painful and itchy. Among the various types of psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis is the least common type of psoriasis. It is extremely painful and itchy. Although Psoriasis cannot be cured, it can be managed through various treatments.
Types of Psoriasis in Children:
Scalp Psoriasis - Scalp psoriasis causes patches of whitish-yellow skin or flaky skin on the scalp, the sides and on the back of the ears. They can be itchy and red as well. The big, circular and rough patches can be found arranged randomly on the scalp.
Acute Guttate psoriasis - These are small spot like marks on the skin. These are tinier and thinner than the common plaques. It is less prevalent in adults and more common in children. Less than 2% of people suffer from this type of psoriasis.
Flexural psoriasis - Otherwise known as inverse psoriasis is not as noticeable as the other types, but is still as painful as the others. It is a shiny smooth rash on the folds of skin rather than plaque formation. It is rare and comes along with other types of psoriasis - like chronic plaque psoriasis.
Chronic Plaque Psoriasis - Around 90% of psoriasis cases are plaque psoriasis, even amongst children, it is quite common.
Nail Psoriasis - It also called psoriatic nail dystrophy and it affects the nails. It rarely occurs alone and usually follows existing psoriatic conditions like psoriatic arthritis or plaque psoriasis. It occurs within the nail and can infect other nails on the hands.
Photosensitive psoriasis - It is a rare type of psoriasis caused due to exposure to sunlight, due to a polymorphous light eruption, people who suffer from photosensitive psoriasis. It can be prevented by keeping your child away from sunlight.

Infection
Skin Irritation
Stress
Obesity
Cold Weather
Managing triggers help reduce the severity and occurrences of psoriasis outbreaks.
Causes of Psoriasis in Kids
Heredity - genes plays a vital role.
One in three people, affected with psoriasis have a relative, dead or alive with psoriasis.
Even if one parent suffers from psoriasis, there is a 15% probability that child will have the condition too.

Is Psoriasis Contagious?
Psoriasis is an inflammation and is not contagious. Due to lack of awareness, people fear that the infection can spread just by touch which is not the case. The reason for this misconception is that they think the disease is caused due to some type of viruses, fungus or bacteria. However, It arises due to inflammation and problems caused due to a poor immune system.
What does Childhood Psoriasis look like?
Symptoms of psoriasis in children include discoloration and pitting of nails
Severe scalping of skin
Diaper dermatitis or plaques identical to adult psoriasis in the groin area
It is uncommon in infants but not unheard of
For infants, close observation to identify the disease is required
How Can You Tell Whether It Is Psoriasis or Eczema?
Psoriasis is itchy and one is likely to experience a strong stinging and burning sensation. Some people have described it as being bitten by fire ants. Many people can confuse eczema with psoriasis. Eczema is accompanied by an intense itch. People have been known to scratch so much that their skin bleeds. Eczema causes inflamed red skin which can be crusty or scaly. You may see leathery rough patches, which are dark sometimes. It may also cause swelling in certain people. It is similar to psoriasis in many ways, you may also have red patches, but they are scaly and silvery and rise up high, but under close examination, you will find the skin to be more inflamed and thicker than eczema.
Psoriasis shows up on the knees, elbows, face, scalp, lower back, palms of your hands, soles of the feet, fingernails, toenails, mouth, lips, ears and skin folds.
Eczema commonly appears on body parts that bend like behind the knees or the inner elbow. It can also be found on the neck, ankles, and wrists. Babies uncommonly get it on their scalp, cheeks, chin, chest, back, legs and arms.
Triggers
Eczema commonly occurs due to things that irritate skin like, detergents, soaps, disinfectants and juices from meats or produce. Things that are allergic also trigger eczema, like dust, pets, pollen, mold, dandruff and certain foods. Infections, stress, heat, sweating, humidity and changes in hormones also set off eczema. Eczema commonly occurs in babies and young children. In most cases, the condition improves as the child grows up. It is very rare for adults to affected by it. It is usually set off as side-effect of other conditions like stress, hormone changes or thyroid disease. Eczema is accompanied with sensitive skin, or dry skin, you probably have members in your family who have it or has hay fever or asthma.
Psoriasis is set off due to infection, stress or due to an injury to the skin. The injuries could be because of sunburn, scratches, and vaccination. Certain types of medications like lithium, commonly used for treating malaria and bipolar disorder can cause the flare-up of psoriasis. It usually shows up during the ages between 15 and 35. Although it is rarely found in babies you can get it during other ages too. It is linked to other major health conditions. If you have it you have high chances of having heart disease, depression or diabetes.
Diagnosing Psoriasis in Children
The diagnosis of psoriasis in children is done through a physical examination. Doctors inspect the skin and make the diagnosis based on the observation of the affected areas.
The plaques are commonly distributed symmetrically.
They particularly infect areas like the scalp, knees, elbows, skin folds like behind the ears, groin, and armpits.
They are red, circumscribed and scaly.
There is a history of psoriasis in the family.
In severe cases, a skin biopsy might be necessary to not confuse psoriasis with other similar looking skin conditions.
Assessing the severity of psoriasis aids in choosing the most appropriate method of treatment. Its severity can be assessed in the following ways:
Calculating the area of body surface involved
Estimating a psoriasis area and severity index (PASI score)
Assessing the quality of life with the help of a questionnaire.
A good dermatologist can help individuals deal with severe psoriasis. Adolescents and children with psoriasis require the help of paediatric dermatologist. Additionally, counsellors are also recommended as psoriasis can cause significant social and psychological damage to the child.
Treatment of Psoriasis
Although it cannot be cured, there are various options to manage psoriasis.
Topical therapy
Topical therapies are ideal to treat mild and moderate psoriasis for all the children with psoriasis.
Apply Vitamin D with the help of ointments like calcipotriol on the affected areas, twice daily.
Topical corticosteroids are usually used in short courses raging between two to three times per week for the long-term.
Combining betamethasone diproprionate and calcipotriol gel/ointment when applied once daily for four weeks. It can be used once for a while afterward if required.
Dithranol can be used for immediate relief but are not easy to use as they can stain clothes and irritate the skin.
Coal tar can be used for children with psoriasis as it does not affect the genitals or the face. It is ideal for scalp psoriasis although it has an unpleasant odour.
Phototherapy
Narrowband UVB phototherapy is commonly used for children with psoriasis, especially for children over the age of 10 years. It is the perfect treatment for guttate psoriasis and plaque psoriasis as they respond best. A treatment course based in a hospital normally requires the patient to attend the treatment three times in a week for up to 12 weeks. Some hospitals offer PUVA and Broadband UVB treatment.
Methotrexate
If topical treatments and phototherapy do not show satisfactory improvement, methotrexate tablets can be used. These are prescribed once weekly and have been proven useful. It is more extensively used in the treatment of adults than children. Various case studies have shown remarkable clinical improvement amongst two-year-old children, with remarkable tolerance. To ensure safety, regular blood tests are mandatory.
Biological agents
Biologic agents like itravenous infliximad and subcutaneous etanercept should be used only as a last resort. It can be used to deal with severe psoriasis in children who have not responded well to other therapies. Although they are safe they have adverse side effects like infections. Only after the consultation of a dermatologist on a case-to-case basis, should a biological agent be used.
Home Remedies to Cure Psoriasis
Even though psoriasis is not curable, there are many treatments to ease and manage the symptoms of psoriasis. Following are home remedies to help manage the symptoms of psoriasis.
Dietary supplements: According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, dietary supplements might help eases symptoms of psoriasis from within. Vitamin D, aloe vera, Oregon grape, milk thistle and evening primrose oil have been known to help manage symptoms of mild psoriasis. It is vital to keep in mind not to take supplements that interfere with pre-existing conditions you might have.
Prevention of dry skin: Keep the air in your home or office moist with the help of a humidifier. It helps prevent dry skin even before it starts. Moisturizers for sensitive skin are also good to keep your skin supple and prevent it from forming plaques.
Avoid fragrances: Most perfumes and soaps contain dyes and other chemicals that might irritate your skin. They make you smell great at the cost of inflaming psoriasis. It is best to avoid such products whenever possible, you can also consider choosing products with labels that say sensitive skin.
Healthy diet: Diet plays an important role to manage psoriasis. Eliminating fatty snacks and red meat from your diet might help reducing flare-ups that are triggered by such food products. Cold-water fish, nuts, seed and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids are popularly known for their capability to reduce inflammation. These are helpful to manage psoriasis symptoms. Olive oil is also known to have benefits which sooth the skin when topically applied. Try massaging a few spoonsful of olive oil on your scalp when you shower next. It helps loosen irritating plaque.
Warm baths provide relief from itch: While hot water irritates skin, a lukewarm bath with Epsom salt, milk, mineral oil or olive oils has been noted to soothe the itch and penetrate plaques and scales. For added benefits moisturize yourself quickly after you finish your bath.
Light therapy: Light therapy involves a doctor, shining ultraviolet light on your skin. This form of therapy commonly requires frequent and consistent sessions. It is vital to remember tanning beds cannot be substituted as light therapy. Too much exposure to sunlight worsens psoriasis in an individual. It is recommended to undergo this procedure with the guidance of your doctor.
Reduce stress: Most chronic conditions like psoriasis can be a source of stress. This often turns to a vicious cycle, where stress itself worsens the psoriasis symptoms. Along with reducing stress wherever possible, try implementing practices that reduce stress like meditation and yoga.
Children with psoriasis may clear up completely, within months of diagnosis and treatment, particularly if the guttate plaques form because of an infection. It is advised to keep in mind that some children might progress to have long-term psoriasis. In many cases, the disease is life-long. Early large plaque psoriasis normally tends to be especially persistent and hence challenging to treat. It may lead to the occurrence of complications like psoriatic arthritis. Children dealing with severe psoriasis are generally advised to exercise regularly, avoid smoking and maintain a healthy weight.

Which Toys to Invest for Your Little One Today to Save Money
Purchasing toys for your little one is exciting. It's waste to get toys for the newborns as they are unable to see clearly for the first 3 months. However after 3 months they are attracted to sounds.
Invest in fisher price rattles which are funky and colourful. Play gyms are also good option for your baby in 3-6 months age group. I used to use playgym for my little one when she was around 3 months of age. I could be hands free for around 20 minutes as the little one used to keep observing toys around the gym and babble to them. Later on she tried to hold them and feel the toys. It's a good way of exploration for your little one at this age. They get to learn about colours sounds and helps in building their motor skills. This is must have for your little one. I got my play gym from first cry Babyhug product for around 1200 Rs and it's worth the price.

A. I think it would be advisable for you to get an ultrasound done with your doctor that’s going to give you a clarity because if there is a pregnancy it would be visible at least at least that sack is visible if it’s a regular pregnancy so it would be advisable to have a test with your doctor
