Baby Rubbing Eyes - Reasons and Prevention
Babies rubbing their eyes is possibly the cutest thing you will see. Their tiny fists rubbing those round curious eyes are sure to tug at your heartstrings. Usually, babies rub their eyes when they feel tired or sleepy, but in some cases, your baby might also be feeling pain due to dust or an eyelash in the eyes, an eye infection, or even an allergy.
Your infant rubbing his/her eyes can be a warning sign for all the above. You need to be alert, so that you can do everything to help prevent your little one from accidentally hurting his or her eyes by rubbing too hard. Let’s look at some of the reasons why babies rub their eyes.
Why Do Babies Rub Their Eyes?
There are several reasons why babies rub their eyes –
1. They Are Feeling Sleepy
Sometimes, along with rubbing the eyes, your baby may also yawn. This means that he/ she is sleepy and tired. When you are tired, your eyes are fatigued. That’s why babies rub their eyes, so that they can try and relieve some of the tension and soreness around the eye muscles and in the eyelids, just like during a massage. This indicates that its time for a good, long nap!
2. Their Eyes Are Dry
Your baby can also rub his/her eyes when they become too dry. A tear film covers the inside eye and evaporates if it gets exposed to air for a long time. This creates discomfort, due to dryness of the eyes, and your baby may instinctively rub his/ her eyes to relieve that discomfort, especially since rubbing creates tears, which bring back moisture to the eyes.
3. They Are Curious
You may notice that when you close your eyes and rub them, you see lights and patterns on the insides of your eyelid. Your little one may have recently developed the motor skills to rub his/ her eyes and is experimenting with this new skill. Your baby may be amazed by the patterns seen while rubbing the eyes, and could be trying it over and over again to experience it.
4. There Is Something in Their Eyes
Your baby may be rubbing his/her eyes continuously if there is something in there causing irritation. It may be specks of dust, an eyelash, or dried mucus. It is important to note that even blinking or tears may be signs of this. If there is an irritant in your baby’s eyes, use a soft wet cloth to wipe the eye and face so that nothing else gets in. After that, use cold water to clean your baby’s eyes (never use warm water inside the eyes). Make sure someone is holding the baby’s head or there is adequate support when you do this.
If you see something stuck in the corner of your baby’s eye, try using a warm, wet cloth or cotton swab to brush it out. If the tears and blinking persist even after that, it might mean the foreign object is still stuck inside the eye. In that case, it is best to visit a doctor.
5. Painful or Itchy Eyes
Another reason for a baby rubbing her his/ eyes might be due to allergies or an infection that may present itself through pain or itching. Symptoms that your baby has an eye infection may include swollen or reddish eyes, discharge, fever, or continued crying. In such cases, it is better to consult a doctor so that he/she can correctly diagnose and treat your baby’s eye infection or allergy.
How Can You Prevent Babies From Rubbing Their Eyes?
You need to take some measures to prevent your baby from rubbing his/ her eyes often, as it might cause injury or scratches to your little one’s eyes. Here are some ways to prevent this from happening.
Try covering your baby’s hands with mittens if he/she has a vigourous eye-rubbing habit. This will protect his/her skin from getting scratched or irritated.
Put your baby to sleep, immediately, if you notice eye-rubbing accompanied by yawning. Establish a sleep routine for your baby and stick to it. Once your baby gets used to it, there will be no more tiredness, and hence, no more eye rubbing.
To prevent foreign objects from getting inside your baby’s eyes, try not to take him/ her to places where there is a lot of dust flying around. If you have to, then properly protect the baby’s eyes and nose before exposing him/her to dust.
Risks of Vigorous Eye Rubbing
While mild eye rubbing when sleepy, etc. Is unlikely to pose any threat, vigourous eye-rubbing may have certain risks. Here are some of the risks of rubbing eyes frequently or with force.
1. Increases the Risk of an Infection
Babies are naturally curious and keep touching everything around them. Not to mention the people around who transfer the germs they carry, when cuddling the little ones. Rubbing the eyes increases the risk of these germs being transferred into your baby’s eye and causing an infection.
2. Worsens Eyesight in the Long Term
Constantly rubbing the eyes leads to thinning of the corneal tissue, worsening eyesight in the long run. While the effects may not be as immediate as an infection, your baby is more likely to grow up with progressive myopia later on in life.
3. Can Cause an Injury
The baby may vigorously rub his/her eye if there is something stuck in there causing irritation. This increases the risk of a corneal abrasion, which can be painful and take long to heal.
Do not worry or panic if you notice your baby developing an eye-rubbing habit. If you think something is bothering him/ her and notice any redness or swelling, try washing the eyes and cleaning the area around them, using the methods explained above. If that does not help with redness, and the swelling persists, consult a doctor. If the eye- rubbing continues to a greater extent, even without redness or swelling, it is still better to visit the doctor once to be 100% sure that everything is alright. After all, no compromises should be taken when it is your baby in question!

Painless Vaccination for Babies
If you are a parent, the mere thought of getting your baby vaccinated and hearing his cries might make you look for harmless alternatives. And there are! You can consider painless vaccination for your baby. Painless vaccinations are acellular vaccines that contain fewer antigens and are administered by a syringe. As these vaccinations don’t make a child uncomfortable, they have become a popular choice among parents. But before you take your child on a painless route, you must understand what these vaccines are all about and whether or not they are effective.
What Is Painless Vaccination?
Painless vaccination for babies is a recent invention in the field of immunology. A painless vaccine is given as a combination vaccine which goes by the name DaPT (Diphtheria, acellular Pertussis and Tetanus.) This vaccine causes less or no pain and swelling where it is injected. And the DaPT vaccine along with being painless is as effective as the regular painful vaccines such as the DPT vaccine.
Are Painless Vaccines Really Effective?
Painless or painful - both the types of vaccines are equally effective as shown by recent studies. A painless vaccine too can prevent DPT and its severe forms. It is recommended! However, one should remember that no vaccine is 100 per cent effective. Although the vaccinated child may become immune, the disease can still be passed along through him to other children who have not been vaccinated or who have weak immunity. Similarly, if the child has low immunity, he may get an infection.
Are Painless Vaccines Safe?
Painless vaccines are safe - they prevent babies from experiencing post-vaccination side effects like fever and painful swelling.
Advantages of Painless Vaccination
Here are some advantages that have been linked to painless vaccinations:
Pain experienced by a child is minimal.
There is little to no swelling at the injection site.
Unlike other vaccines, there is very less chance of fever after the shot.
Side Effects of Painless Vaccine in Babies
Generally, there are no side effects of painless vaccines in babies. Painless vaccinations are not actually pain-free. They cause the same amount of pain when administered, but post-vaccination there is lesser pain and the chances of fever are also less. The only downside of this vaccination is that it is expensive. In fact, the price of the painless vaccines is double the cost of painful vaccines.
Painless vs. Painful Vaccine
DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus) is a painful form of the painless vaccination. It is also known as Easy-five or Pentavac.
DaPT (Diphtheria, acellular Pertussis and Tetanus) is the painless version of the vaccination and is also known as Pentaxim.
Pentadic (painful) protects against Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Haemophilus Influenzae Type B and Hepatitis B, while Pentaxim (painless) protects against the same diseases except for Hepatitis B.
The painful vaccination causes swelling in the injected area and is often accompanied by fever whereas the painless vaccination does not have such severe after-effects.
Painless or Painful Vaccine – Which Is Better?
Painless as well as painful vaccines are equally effective. So you can choose either for your baby. But do keep in mind that the painless vaccines are expensive.
Immunization Schedule Based On the Choice of Vaccines
According to the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, one should give the painful vaccine as follows:
Primary Immunization: This should be given to babies at the ages of six weeks, ten weeks, and fourteen weeks.
Booster Shots: Booster shots should be given to a child when he turns one and a half years of age and at five years of age.
According to the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, one should give the painless vaccine as follows:
Primary Immunization: The IAP recommends that the painless vaccine be given only in special circumstances for the primary vaccinations. Some of the special circumstances include allergic reactions to the previous dose of the painful vaccine or when the child suffers from neurological problems.
Booster Shots: These can be given at the ages of one and a half years and five years.
Note: As per the new guidelines of IAP, the schedule for the painless vaccine and painful vaccine is the same.
As a parent, you might want to spare your child from the after-effects of the painful vaccination, but its benefits over the painless vaccine are much greater. It is all right to give your child the painless vaccine for the booster shots, but for their immunity, painful vaccines should be given.

Easy and Effective Tips to Remove Smell From Shoes
If your shoes stink, it can be annoying as well as embarrassing for you, especially when you are surrounded by a lot of people. Neither can you take them off around people, nor can you wear them. But don't worry, because there are some simple tricks that you can try to get rid of bad odour from your shoes. Plus these tricks are dirt-cheap too! Furthermore, wearing clean shoes will also reduce your chances of contracting nasty infections and prevent fungus or bad bacterial overgrowths. It'll also help your feet breathe comfortably and stay relaxed, making your walks and runs much more pleasant.
How to Get Rid of Smell From Your Shoes
Nobody likes to hear nasty comments about their feet being stinky or shoes smelling like a skunk. If your shoes are smelling bad, try the remedies mentioned below. Freshen up your stinky shoes with these tricks.
1. Use Baking Soda
Get a coffee filter, a few teaspoons of baking soda, a few drops of essential oils, and a rubber hand. Pour the baking soda and essential oils into the filter and tie it up tightly with the rubber band. Put a sachet of this blend inside your shoes and leave that overnight. It does the trick and helps get rid of stinky shoes.
2. Let Them Dry in the Sun
Clean your shoes using a shower spray or rinse with water. Pat dry and leave out the pair in the sunlight for a few hours. Sunlight kills bacterial growth and keeps the shoes dry and fine. It also helps remove odour from shoes in the process.
3. Use Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets
To get rid of the smell from your stinky sneakers, you need something strong. Try dryer sheets. Stashing a layer of a dryer sheet into each sneaker will help deodorize your shoes. You can also place a few where you store your shoes.
4. Wash Your Feet
If the problem is not in your shoes but your feet, then it's a good idea to start remedying that. Make sure to practice good foot hygiene by washing your feet daily with lukewarm water. Use a pumice stone to scrub and exfoliate your feet. When you do this, you prevent dead skin and bacterial overgrowths from appearing on your toes. Make sure to pat dry your feet.
5. Get a Shoe Deodorant Spray
You can use a shoe deodorant spray to freshen up your feet and shoes without any hassle. Just strap one into your bag and take it with you wherever you go. The spray will get rid of feet fungus and prevent bad odour.
6. Use Salt
Canvas shoes and sneakers can smell really bad in the summer season if you don't wear socks. Salt can absorb the moisture from your shoes and get rid of the smell, so sprinkle some salt in your canvas shoe. Try this remedy every now and then to keep your shoes smelling fresh always.
7. Try Baby Powder
Using baby powder is more of a precautionary step and not a remedy for smelly shoes. But it works! If your shoe smell, sprinkle some baby powder in the shoes before putting them on to prevent them from smelling.
8. Use Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is another popular way to freshen up stinky shoes. There are two ways to go about using this. The first method is where you take a spray bottle and fill it up with equal parts of water and rubbing alcohol. Spray this solution in your shoes and place them in a well-ventilated area. The alcohol will get rid of the bacteria while the ventilation will prevent moisture buildup and get rid of foul odour.
You can also dip cotton balls in rubbing alcohol and place them in your shoes. Don't forget to fill up your shoes completely if you plan on using the cotton balls. You'll have to leave them overnight to get the best results.
9. Freeze Your Shoes
While you may not be keen about the idea of keeping your shoes in the refrigerator, but it works. Put your stinky shoes in a seal bag and keep the bag in the freezer. Leave them in the freezer overnight. Unseal in the morning, and you'll notice your shoes smelling fresh.
10. Use Citrus Peels
If your shoes are already cleaned up and dried and you'd like a nice scent, use citrus peels. Place these inside your shoes. If you don't have citrus peels available, you can also substitute with lemon peel powder since that works just as good. It'll get the smell out of boots too.
Fixing smelly shoes may seem like a tedious chore, but it really isn't. These simple hacks will make your life so much better once you start incorporating them. Don't forget to practice good feet hygiene. And if you've got smelly shoes, use these remedies after a thorough cleanup. That'll make sure you actually get rid of the cause of the smell and not merely the foul odour.

15 Foods You Should Not Eat When Trying to Lose Weight
It is never easy to lose weight. There is an increasing awareness of the problems of having excess body weight. This is making people want to lose weight and become fit and healthy. People who are obese or overweight have higher risks of getting a stroke, heart diseases, depression, and diabetes. Losing weight can reduce the chances of developing these problems.
15 Foods to Avoid to Lose Weight
Not every food items said to be 'healthy' or 'low fat' are what you should be eating. Here are some foods to avoid to lose weight quickly.
1. Sugary Cereals
Having a healthy breakfast every day will help with your efforts to reduce weight as it will reduce your hunger. However, having a bowl of sugary cereal for breakfast is not going to help you. These cereals are rich in sugar, and the body converts these sugars into fats. This will also make things worse since having sugary cereals in the morning will cause an increase in the insulin and blood sugar levels which will make you want to eat unhealthy foods by increasing your appetite. Therefore, when getting breakfast cereals, check the box and avoid the ones that include highly refined grains and sugar. This is one of the carb foods to avoid to lose weight.
2. Diet Soda
If you are planning to switch from regular soda to diet soda to lose weight, you should think again. Diet soda can stimulate your appetite as it contains artificial sweeteners, which can lead you to consume junk foods. A study in 2015 showed that people who drank diet soda ended up gaining three times the abdominal fat in a span of nine years when compared to people who did not drink diet soda. Just like sugar, other sugar substitutes like sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin might increase the chances of gaining weight, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.
3. Potato Chips and French Fries
These foods are markers of junk food diets, and you can forget about weight loss if you love having them. These fries and chips have high fats and calories which make them the worst choice to include in your weight loss plan. Fried potatoes could also increase the insulin and blood sugar levels which have a negative impact on your appetite. When frying food rich in carbohydrates at very high temperatures, they tend to produce acrylamide. This substance could increase the risk of cancer.
4. Commercial Salad Dressings
Almost everyone includes a salad in their weight loss plan. Fruits and vegetables are very healthy since they are rich in antioxidants, nutrients, low calories, soluble fibre, and many other nutrients and are good for losing weight. To improve the bland taste when you use commercial salad dressing these foods might turn out to be one of the worst for losing weight. They are often loaded with calories and fats because of ingredients like soybean oil, high-fat mayonnaise, and high fructose syrups. If you want to improve the taste, you could add vinegar or extra-virgin olive oil to it. Herbs would also make them a great meal.
5. Oil Popped Popcorn
Popcorn is a healthy and tasty snack. The complex carbohydrates present in this food will provide you with energy and stamina, and the high fibre content will also take you up. Moreover, it has a rich content of antioxidants. But the commercial oil-popped popcorn you get at the movie theatres is a very bad choice when you are trying to lose weight. It is filled with calories, sodium, and fat. It is best to have homemade air-popped popcorn, and you could also flavour it with a bunch of herbs.
6. Margarine
Though these are marketed as a better alternative for butter, margarine is another fatty and calorie dense food you should avoid. Butter contains saturated fats that are less harmful when compared to hydrogenated fats found in margarine. One tablespoon contains 3 grams of trans fat. Margarine also lacks nutrition. In addition to increasing weight gain, it also increases the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases. Studies show that a diet that has high hydrogenated fats is linked to type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.
7. Alcoholic Drinks
To lose some extra pounds, you will need to stop drinking. Alcohol contains empty calories that do not provide you with any nutrients or fill you up. The fats, proteins, and carbohydrates get mixed with these empty calories, and they contribute to increasing the fat storage rather than focusing on the fat-burning process. Alcohol also leads to an increase in the production of cortisol, a hormone that breaks down the muscles and preserves fat. So, until you reach your weight loss goal, totally cut down alcohol. After that, you can add them in control after watching its impact on your weight.
8. Packed Fruit Juice
Fruit juices are a very popular weight loss food people add in their diets. This is because they are rich in nutrients and help to keep us fresh and energised. However, excess consumption of juice does not have any benefit on your health. During the juicing process, the nutritious fibre gets lost, and you end up drinking sugar which is in the form of fructose. It is worse when you drink packaged juices because they might be only a mixture of sugar, water, and chemicals that have a fruit like taste. Whole fruits are better for managing weight. They only contain natural sugar, and since they are present in the fibrous walls, the release of it into your bloodstream is very slow which makes them less harmful.
9. White Bread
For many people, white bread is a staple food item, but in reality, it does not have any nutritional value. It contains only empty calories. So it is important to watch your white bread consumption when trying to lose weight. The carbohydrates present in this bread are fattening, and these foods are high glycaemic index food. This means that they will not keep your hunger away for a very long time, and you will get hungry soon and end up eating extra. The starch also increases blood sugar levels, thus raising the risk of diabetes. If you are a big fan of bread, then you can have whole-wheat bread which has a high nutritious value. You should also avoid other items that are made from white flour. White rice should also be avoided, and you can have brown rice instead.
10. Frozen Meals
Food manufacturers often pack frozen meals with sodium to make them last longer since it is a natural preservative. Sodium will make you drink more water, making you feel bloated, and you will not feel or look your best no matter how much you want to lose weight. Manufacturers also add a few calories. These freezer meals might be unsatisfying even though they are filled with a lot of calories.
11. High-fibre Snack Bars
Fibre is required for the body. It is good at keeping your digestive system running, and it makes you feel full even if you are trying to cut back a few calories. What you should avoid is a snack bar as each snack bar contains nearly one day’s worth of fibre. Throughout the day, fibre intake should be consistent for improving digestive health, keeping the hunger away, but it should not upset your stomach.
12. Tropical Fruits
Fruits are an amazing snack when you are on a diet, but there are some fruits that you might want to avoid if you are planning to lose some weight. Reduce the consumption of fruits like ripe pineapples and mangoes since they have a high content of natural sugars.
13. Seasoning Salts
People often sprinkle seasoning salt to spike up their low-calorie dishes which taste bland and boring. But these salts are filled with sodium which should be avoided since it increases the risk of gaining high blood pressure. Instead of this, you could use fresh herbs that will bring out amazing flavours during your meal.
14. Whole Milk
Whole milk is filled with cholesterol and extra fat. It is better to go for skimmed milk to enjoy the benefits of milk without having to worry about calories.
15. Soy Sauce
Though they are low on calories, they have an extreme amount of sodium that will leave you feeling bloated. They also increase the chances of having hypertension. There are so many types of soy sauces available that have low sodium, but they are still not significantly lower than the normal ones. So use it in little amounts.
We know that every bite counts when you are counting those calories. These foods listed above are some of the most common culprits that could lead you to the opposite of what you want to achieve. So now that you know what foods you should not eat to lose weight. Prevent hunger and cravings and encourage your efforts to lose weight!

The Journey of a Superwoman - My Experiences and Learning
Hi mommies, Every mom has a story to tell. Life is not all about comforts, it's about making yourself comfortable in the tiny moments. I am not saying that I am a 'superwoman', but yes, I am the woman who is proud to be herself. My unique journey started when my son came into my life, and my husband got transferred to Delhi. It was a challenge for me to handle both the kids - my 8-year-old daughter and my newborn son. I am sharing my experience, feelings, and all that I learnt along the way.
1. Stay Calm
There were times when I felt that my hubby should be here with me, and that's when I realised the importance of staying calm. As the day started, my job began. Now, I'm an expert in making chapatis with one hand. While the baby is fast asleep, I used to meditate for 10 minutes. It is beneficial. Another situation of panic was when the baby was not well. The solution? Get to know some basic home remedies and take a deep breath.
2. Plan Your Day
Most of the times, I plan my day according to my lil one's needs. So keep his routine in mind and plan your day accordingly. I know his play-time, nap-time and bath-time, so I set up my routine as per his requirements.
3. Keep the Doctor's Number Handy
You can't give medicines to your little one for every small change. But when the situation arrives, handle it patiently. Keep monitoring your child's behaviour. Most importantly, talk to your doctor. I am blessed with a wonderful doctor who guides me in every situation of trouble.
4. Learn from Your Children
It's not only parents who give values to their kids. Kids are great mentors too! They teach us the importance of being happy, creative, patient, and so much more. Learn all that you can by observing your children.
5. Cherish every moment
After a hectic schedule, I used to spend some quality time with my kids. Games like peek-a-boo, hide and seek, clapping and a lot more. I enjoyed their reactions, and it filled my heart with joy.
6. Let the Siblings Bond
My son has a smart and caring sister. He always feels comfortable with her. She happily helps him with so many things. They share a beautiful relationship.
7. Stay Focused/Prioritise Your Duties
Since I am working mom, sitting at home is not easy. But again, priorities matter! As of now, my priority is to treasure these moments, because these won't last forever. So love the way you are and enjoy the situation you are in.

A. hello in the morning around 7 to 9:00 a.m. for 10 minutes you can get your baby exposed to the sunlight which would be safe on baby so the child will also get the vitamin d naturally which should be good and nothing to worry about
