7 Tips to Put a Teething Baby to Sleep
Babies start teething between four and seven months after their birth. As a mother you get excited, when you see your baby teething. However, teething is extremely painful for a baby, causing many issues, including difficulty in sleeping. So, here are some ways in which can ease the pain and put your baby to sleep.
Signs and Symptoms of Teething
1. Biting
Teeth poking through the gums are painful, which is alleviated by applying pressure on the area. Hence, teething babies bite and chew on whatever they can find to suppress the pain, which is a natural instinct.
2. Drooling
Teething makes babies drool more than usual, so if you notice excessive drooling, chances are your baby is teething. Keep a towel or napkin handy to wipe your child's chin every now and then.
3. Crankiness
The pain from teething puts babies in a sour mood. Expect your little one to be fussy and irritated during the teething phase.
4. Disrupted Sleep
The discomfort babies face may prevent them from being able to sleep peacefully, and you may notice your child periodically waking up in the middle of the night or having difficulty going to sleep.
5. Loss of Appetite
Though this may seem contradictory, the suction from nursing can cause the baby’s sore gums to feel worse, causing a loss of appetite. Try and soothe the pain before nursing, and you may notice the appetite rising.
6. Cheek Rubbing and Ear Pulling
You may notice you child pulling his/her ears or furiously rubbing his cheeks. This could happen as a result of shared nerve pathways in the cheeks and ears. However, excessive ear pulling could indicate a ear infection, so keep a look out.
Tips to Help a Child Sleep During Teething
As a new mother, you will receive ample advice on parenting, which is bound to boggle your mind. Your baby will be in intense pain, due to which his sleeping schedule may get disrupted. Therefore, here are some useful tips to get your teething baby to sleep.
1. Give the Baby Something Cold to Chew On
Cold desensitises nerves and reduces pain. This is why, nowadays, more toy companies are creating rubber or gel-core based teethers that can be refrigerated. Teethers are special toys, made to be chewed on by teething babies. The pressure on a baby’s teeth, caused by chewing, can provide relief from teething pain. The instinct to begin chewing to reduce the pain of teething is natural in humans and animals. If you do not have any refrigerator-friendly teething toys, you can substitute it with a clean, frozen cloth, instead. Do not freeze teething toys, as that will make them hard and could hurt your baby's teeth. Simply chill them before handing to your baby. Also, always be present to supervise your baby when he is chewing something. Teething toys are designed to be chewed and not swallowed, so keep an eye on your baby.
2. Massage the Gums
Your baby might refuse to sleep alone when he starts teething. As you lay the baby on the bed, massage his/her gums with your finger. This will ease the pain and help put your baby to sleep. If he/she wakes up in the middle of the night, you can massage the gums again. As you massage your baby's gums, you will be able to feel where the teeth are coming in. Focus on massaging these areas, in particular. Ensure that your fingers are clean before massaging your baby's gums.
3. Give Chamomile Tea
Chamomile tea helps reduce inflammation, soothe stomach aches, boost immunity, promote relaxation, and induce sleep. Giving chamomile tea to a teething baby will provide relief from teething pain and even induce sleep. Chamomile tea can be given to a baby through a feeding bottle at room temperature or when mildly warm. You can even soak a clean rag in chamomile tea and freeze it before giving it to your baby to chew on. However, it should be noted that chamomile tea should not be given to babies who are less than six months of age. You can give it to a baby who has crossed the half-year mark, but it is advisable to consult a doctor before opting for this remedy. Make sure that the chamomile tea is at a slightly cool temperature, but not very cold. Also, while massaging the gums, a clean finger can be dipped into chamomile tea before massage.
4. Feed the Baby Cold Food Before Bedtime
Cold soothes pain in the gums and a full stomach induces sleep. You can give your baby cold yoghurt or cold fruits and vegetables, such as grapes or boiled carrots. However, keep in mind to give him age-appropriate food, i.e. fruits or veggies that can be chewed properly. An option here would be to buy a mesh feeding bag. This is used to start young babies on solid foods safely, without the risk of swallowing too big a piece, and choking.
5. Create a Calm Environment
To make your baby sleep, it is important that you set a sleeping schedule. When babies have a set pattern of sleep, their bodies adjust accordingly. A bed-time routine automatically makes them sleepy as bedtime approaches, as it subconsciously signals that it is time to sleep when certain activities are performed in a set sequence, for a period of time. It essentially works on the same principles of habit formation. The routine could include a warm bath, changing to pyjamas, reading a short story, singing to your baby or rocking him in your arms until he falls asleep.
6. Breastfeed
Breastfeeding calms your baby. As your baby begins teething, he might gnaw on your nipples and hurt you. To prevent this, massage your baby’s gums prior to feeding. Breastfeeding is an effective way to soothe your baby and put him to sleep.
7. Use Pain-killing Medication
This should be your last resort if you’ve tried the other methods, without any positive result. Pain-killers can help alleviate your baby’s pain and put him to sleep. Always consult your doctor before resorting to medication. Do not buy over-the-counter pharmaceutical products for this. Painkillers such as Ibuprofen have special, diluted formulas made particularly for children and babies. Do not use adult painkillers. Also, consult your paediatrician before giving any medication to your little one.
How Long Does the Teething Pain Last?
It is hard to say how long teething pain lasts. For example, a baby might feel the pain for months before the teeth actually come through. Meanwhile, others may feel the pain once the teeth have formed in the gums and are making their way out. The intensity of pain may differ from one baby to another. However, the pain mostly goes away once the tooth has grown out of the gums. While your baby’s front teeth do come up in the first year, the back set of molars appear after the first year, so there is a period of relief from teething stress.
Cautionary Tips
Always watch your baby if he is chewing on something, be it a teething toy, rag, or food. A baby may choke on it, so be careful.
Consult your physician before you give painkillers to your child.
If the teething toy is secured on a string around your baby’s neck, do not leave it on when putting your baby to sleep. It could get stuck somewhere and end up strangling the baby when he/she rolls over.
A common, but dangerous home remedy is to rub crushed aspirin tablets on your baby’s gums. Do not opt for this remedy, as it may cause the baby to become extremely sick.
Babies sometimes develop a habit of pulling their ear while teething, as the pain of teething may transfer to the ear canal. If the pain is excessive, consult a doctor, as your baby could be suffering from a ear infection.
Do not use over-the-counter creams or gels on your baby’s gums as a numbing medication.
FAQ’s
1. Should I Continue Sleep Training During Teething?
Yes, sleep training should continue during the teething phase. Keep in mind that this “phase” comes back around after the first year, and indeed, it will take up to 3 years before a child has all his/her milk teeth in place. Teething will disrupt a few nights’ sleep, but you should continue sleep training your child. Sticking to regular sleep timings and enforcing them by building a bed-time routine is one of the keys to putting your teething baby to sleep. Foregoing sleep training because your baby is teething and cannot sleep due to the pain usually makes it more difficult for the baby to sleep.
2. Can Teething Make Some Babies Sleep More?
According to a popular website, some parents have anecdotally reported that their kids slept more while they were teething. Teething can make a baby feel a bit dull, and hence, he/she might sleep more. However, there is no evidence to prove this. Your baby might be sleeping more because he is going through a growth spurt. Babies are in a growing phase, and although their growth may not always be constant, it can be rapid at one time and stable during another time; hence, the term “growth spurt”. Children going through a growth spurt are observed to sleep more, whether while taking naps or sleeping through the night. Teething is a natural process, and sometimes, the natural process can involve pain. As a mommy, you know best, so do what you think is right.
Meanwhile, stick to sleep training because, in some years, your child will be alright, waking up well-rested after a sound night of sleep, with a precious smile showing off brand new white teeth, which is all you need to forget the tough teething nights.

10 Effective Home Remedies to Treat Baby Ear Infection
Babies are very tender and also sensitive to their surroundings and thus, they are vulnerable to diseases and infections around, more easily. An ear infection is one such infection that is common in kids and is generally known to follow a cold or other ENT issues.
The primary cause of ear infection is a virus or bacteria. Ears make fluid all the time; this fluid builds up behind the eardrum and gets infected. It starts accumulating there making a life form of bacteria. Such bacteria lead to inflammation of the middle area of the ear.
There are many other causes of ear infections in babies, such as:
Horizontal angled placement of the Eustachian tube, as it is still in the development phase
Different kinds of food allergies
Gut infections
A wrongly aligned head or neck portion
10 Best Infant Ear Infection Natural Remedies
Below are some natural ear infection remedies for babies that you can do within the comfort of your home.
1. Garlic/Mullein Drops
Garlic is found to be very effective in killing bacteria than antibiotics, and when garlic is accompanied with mullein, it forms the best baby ear pain home remedy. Garlic is known for its immunity providing capabilities and mullein for its ability to ease the pain. Put 2-3 drops of garlic and mullein oil in your baby’s ear and repeat it 3 times a day for faster relief.
2. Fluids
Fluids also help in treating ear infections in babies. If your baby is still in the breastfeeding stage, consider feeding him more often than usual, as antibodies present in breast milk can prevent your baby from an ear infection.
3. Hot Compress
Hot compresses on the outer portion of the ear can help relieve ear pain due to an ear infection. A hot water bottle, a heating pack, or even a cloth dipped in hot water can be gently applied on to your infant’s ear to make the pain go away. Though, one should be careful regarding the temperature of the water or the pack before applying it, as babies have sensitive skin.
4. Hydrogen Peroxide
Mix warm water and peroxide equally. Put 2-3 drops in your ear and let it rest for 15 seconds. Later, tilt your kid’s head to help the liquid drain away. Repeat the procedure twice a day for best results.
5. Massage
Massage is another easy and convenient option to assure normal circulation and fluid drainage from a baby’s ears. Gently massage your baby’s external ear area or their neck in the downward direction and give inward pressure from the back of the area towards the front area of their cheek. Repeat massaging at least twice a day using essential oils such as rosemary, lavender, tea tree or even the eucalyptus oil.
6. Baking Soda Rinse
Rinsing your child’s ear with baking soda can treat a prevalent ear infection. Mix a few drops of baking soda in water and spray the liquid on the ear’s surface with the help of a syringe. After rinsing it with baking soda, put some drops of essential oil into the ear, such as garlic or lavender oil.
7. Echinacea and Goldenseal
Echinacea and goldenseal are two herbs that greatly help in preventing and fighting ear infections. 2ml of the mixture of these herbs is recommended for children, at least 3 times a day for treating ear infections and building immunity.
8. Chamomile Oil to Wash the Infected Ear
Chamomile oil is a good option for treating ear infection in babies. Put 2-3 drops of chamomile oil into the ear using a dropper and let it settle for about 5-10 minutes. After that tilt the child’s head and let the oil drain out.
9. Onions and Garlic
Onions have antibacterial properties and are also said to provide pain relief and even promotes circulation. Chop the onion and microwave it to make it hot and soft. Once the onion is hot, wrap it in a cloth and place it gently on the child’s ear for 10-15 minutes. Repeat the process, and if the pain doesn’t seem to go away, put 2-3 drops of warm garlic oil using a dropper into the ear for better relief.
10. Elevating the Head
Elevating the baby’s head while he is lying down or sleeping ensures proper sinus drainage. Place one or two pillows under the mattress, so your baby can sleep comfortably.
When to Consult a Doctor
Home remedies can help treat mild ear infections in babies, but it is essential that you keep a watch out for any severe symptoms that require medical treatment. Consult your doctor if your baby:
Has a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
Experiences nausea or vomiting
Has pus discharge or bleeding in the ears
Is in extreme pain for a long time.
Has diarrhoea
Has difficulty hearing for more than 2 days
The listed home remedies for ear infection in babies will help him fight the infection and provide relief to a great extent. In case the problem continues, consider consulting a doctor for further medical assistance.

Newborn Hearing Screening Test
According to medical reports, it is observed that 2 or 3 among every 1,000 newborn babies suffer from hearing loss. This makes a hearing screening test for newborns a necessary procedure. Two tests, in particular - the OCE test and the AABR test - have been used around the world to assess if the baby has any hearing loss.
Video: Newborn Hearing Screening Test
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPRQ9XRGFfs
Why Newborn Hearing Screening Tests Are Important?
Hearing loss can have serious repercussions on the baby’s development. It inhibits the child from learning how to speak. Newborns learn from the environment around them. While babies with hearing problems can learn visually, they will be unable to pick up speech as they cannot decipher the sounds around them. A conversation initiated by the mother may sound like nothing more than muffled noises. This eventually results in impaired speech.
A hearing test can catch this impaired hearing, and the child can be sent for speech therapy. According to audiologists, children treated for hearing loss in time will never have difficulties in speech, language skills, reading and writing.
Hearing test for infants includes the Otoacoustic Emission Test (OAE) and the Automated Auditory Brainstem Response Test (AABR). The type of test that is performed largely depends on the hospital. Some hospitals perform both tests, which is more thorough but could be more expensive. Others first screen for OAE and only if the newborn fails this test do they perform an AABR test.
When Is Newborn Hearing Screening Test Performed?
The screening test can be performed at the earliest and is usually carried out at the hospital before the baby gets discharged. Experts recommend that the test is conducted when the infant is about a month old as they can clearly differentiate between sounds at this stage in life. However, there is no harm in extending the test until the infant is three months old.
How Is Hearing Test For Newborn Done?
As discussed, AABR and OAE are the two tests that are carried out on the baby:
Otoacoustic Emissions(OAE)
The OAE test for newborns is conducted to find the movement of sound waves in the inner part of the baby’s ear. A ticking sound is passed, and the ear is tested to see if it instantly responds to the sound.
The test is conducted when the child is calm and sleeping. To get better results, one can feed or hold the child to make them feel comfortable.
Automated Auditory Brainstem response (AABR)
In the ABR test, the brain of the baby is connected to the computer with the help of sensors. The brainwave activity is tested by transmitting clicking sound using small soft earphones which are placed in the baby’s ears.
When Will You Get Results Of Baby Hearing Test?
Once the OAE test is conducted successfully, which takes not more than 5 to 10 minutes of time, the results will be displayed on the screen in about thirty seconds.
The AABR test can take as long as about two hours. The results will be shared immediately after the test is completed.
Interpretation Of Result
Hearing is measured in Decibels Hearing Level (Db HL). For an OAE test, the range of 30 Db HL is considered the upper limit. If a newborn fares more than 30 Db HL, it is assumed that some hearing loss is present.
An AABR is a screening test and does not evaluate the degree of hearing loss in a child. It has a pass/fail approach where the computer sensor gives out one of the two results based on its calculations.
What Happens If My Baby Fails The Hearing Test?
When the newborn child does not respond to the OAE test as expected, the doctors conduct the test again. This is because a newborn with perfect hearing may also fail the OAE hearing test. The reasons for the failure of the test could be a gathering of debris in the ear canal, a noisy room while performing the test, or if the baby keeps crying. All this makes it difficult for the baby to pass the test. It is observed that babies who fail the test for the first time often successfully pass the test on the second attempt.
If your baby fails the OAE test for the second time, then the audiologist will conduct an AABR test to be certain that there is indeed a hearing problem. After this, follow up tests are done which are more thorough and will involve other professionals like the Early Intervention Specialist, Paediatric Audiologist, and an ENT Physician.
If Hearing Loss Is Found In a Newborn What Are The Further Treatments?
There are plenty of options for the treatment of children who suffer from hearing loss. The Early Intervention Specialist is an individual who works exclusively with children who have hearing disabilities. Their guidance helps the child overcome communication barriers by identifying their weak points and strengthening them. This treatment is more developmental than medical. The Paediatric Audiologist is one who looks into the medical aspects of the hearing loss and may recommend hearing aids or in some cases, corrective surgery.
If My Baby Passes The Hearing Test Can They Still Have Hearing Loss?
The mentioned tests only check for hearing impairment that has taken place at the time of birth. This could be because of pregnancy-related issues or genetics. However, this does not mean that a child cannot have hearing impairment in the future. Trauma to the head, listening to loud music constantly, and ear infections are all dangerous and can cause impaired hearing.
The screening test should regularly be performed during every medical check-up of the newborn baby. In case of any doubt, one can always consult an expert such as an audiologist on what the future course of action should be.
Conclusion: Hearing loss is a big hurdle in the life of any child as it may prevent them from being socially active and academically competent. A screening test at an early age can help parents understand the issue and not panic when their infant is unresponsive during their early months. Early treatment such as speech therapy and minor surgery can help children with hearing impairment live a normal life. Read more

I quit my job to feel the full time of my pregnancy. As the days passed, I was waiting for the day when I would actually get to meet her. Then I started feeling her in me. It was wonderful to feel her inside me. Sometimes, her kicks were very hard. I got curious and anxious when I didn’t feel her kicks. But then she used to start kicking again, and I would relax.
Days kept passing and I waited for her. Now the wait is over, my little princess came to this wonderful world. I was very happy. I got my princess – it is the best gift life has given to me. I was the happiest when I held my daughter in my arms. I kept looking at her tiny hands and her beautiful eyes. She looked at me with love. She taught me that I’m not only a mother to her but I’m going to be her best friend, her well-wisher, role model, and everything for her. My life became happier. Motherhood made me complete. Finally, my life got a meaning. Being a mother to my daughter 'Anaisha' felt so special. After she came into my life, I realised that my love for her is unconditional. I was very happy and had tears in my eyes. I am raising her as my friend. I am living my childhood again with my princess. The feeling of motherhood is so precious, so pure that it just can’t be explained in words. Tomorrow she will become a 2-month-old beautiful girl. ???? She is my best friend, I am regularly talking to her. Though she doesn't respond, she gives me the full expressions. Now she has started to give a little smile when I talk to her also she says 'aaaa'. She is very naughty & when she wakes up in the morning she sees here & there all the time I am with her she sees me & gives me a smile.

* फेब्रिक मास्क
* सर्जिकल मास्क
