Newborn Hearing Screening Test
According to medical reports, it is observed that 2 or 3 among every 1,000 newborn babies suffer from hearing loss. This makes a hearing screening test for newborns a necessary procedure. Two tests, in particular - the OCE test and the AABR test - have been used around the world to assess if the baby has any hearing loss.
Video: Newborn Hearing Screening Test
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPRQ9XRGFfs
Why Newborn Hearing Screening Tests Are Important?
Hearing loss can have serious repercussions on the baby’s development. It inhibits the child from learning how to speak. Newborns learn from the environment around them. While babies with hearing problems can learn visually, they will be unable to pick up speech as they cannot decipher the sounds around them. A conversation initiated by the mother may sound like nothing more than muffled noises. This eventually results in impaired speech.
A hearing test can catch this impaired hearing, and the child can be sent for speech therapy. According to audiologists, children treated for hearing loss in time will never have difficulties in speech, language skills, reading and writing.
Hearing test for infants includes the Otoacoustic Emission Test (OAE) and the Automated Auditory Brainstem Response Test (AABR). The type of test that is performed largely depends on the hospital. Some hospitals perform both tests, which is more thorough but could be more expensive. Others first screen for OAE and only if the newborn fails this test do they perform an AABR test.
When Is Newborn Hearing Screening Test Performed?
The screening test can be performed at the earliest and is usually carried out at the hospital before the baby gets discharged. Experts recommend that the test is conducted when the infant is about a month old as they can clearly differentiate between sounds at this stage in life. However, there is no harm in extending the test until the infant is three months old.
How Is Hearing Test For Newborn Done?
As discussed, AABR and OAE are the two tests that are carried out on the baby:
Otoacoustic Emissions(OAE)
The OAE test for newborns is conducted to find the movement of sound waves in the inner part of the baby’s ear. A ticking sound is passed, and the ear is tested to see if it instantly responds to the sound.
The test is conducted when the child is calm and sleeping. To get better results, one can feed or hold the child to make them feel comfortable.
Automated Auditory Brainstem response (AABR)
In the ABR test, the brain of the baby is connected to the computer with the help of sensors. The brainwave activity is tested by transmitting clicking sound using small soft earphones which are placed in the baby’s ears.
When Will You Get Results Of Baby Hearing Test?
Once the OAE test is conducted successfully, which takes not more than 5 to 10 minutes of time, the results will be displayed on the screen in about thirty seconds.
The AABR test can take as long as about two hours. The results will be shared immediately after the test is completed.
Interpretation Of Result
Hearing is measured in Decibels Hearing Level (Db HL). For an OAE test, the range of 30 Db HL is considered the upper limit. If a newborn fares more than 30 Db HL, it is assumed that some hearing loss is present.
An AABR is a screening test and does not evaluate the degree of hearing loss in a child. It has a pass/fail approach where the computer sensor gives out one of the two results based on its calculations.
What Happens If My Baby Fails The Hearing Test?
When the newborn child does not respond to the OAE test as expected, the doctors conduct the test again. This is because a newborn with perfect hearing may also fail the OAE hearing test. The reasons for the failure of the test could be a gathering of debris in the ear canal, a noisy room while performing the test, or if the baby keeps crying. All this makes it difficult for the baby to pass the test. It is observed that babies who fail the test for the first time often successfully pass the test on the second attempt.
If your baby fails the OAE test for the second time, then the audiologist will conduct an AABR test to be certain that there is indeed a hearing problem. After this, follow up tests are done which are more thorough and will involve other professionals like the Early Intervention Specialist, Paediatric Audiologist, and an ENT Physician.
If Hearing Loss Is Found In a Newborn What Are The Further Treatments?
There are plenty of options for the treatment of children who suffer from hearing loss. The Early Intervention Specialist is an individual who works exclusively with children who have hearing disabilities. Their guidance helps the child overcome communication barriers by identifying their weak points and strengthening them. This treatment is more developmental than medical. The Paediatric Audiologist is one who looks into the medical aspects of the hearing loss and may recommend hearing aids or in some cases, corrective surgery.
If My Baby Passes The Hearing Test Can They Still Have Hearing Loss?
The mentioned tests only check for hearing impairment that has taken place at the time of birth. This could be because of pregnancy-related issues or genetics. However, this does not mean that a child cannot have hearing impairment in the future. Trauma to the head, listening to loud music constantly, and ear infections are all dangerous and can cause impaired hearing.
The screening test should regularly be performed during every medical check-up of the newborn baby. In case of any doubt, one can always consult an expert such as an audiologist on what the future course of action should be.
Conclusion: Hearing loss is a big hurdle in the life of any child as it may prevent them from being socially active and academically competent. A screening test at an early age can help parents understand the issue and not panic when their infant is unresponsive during their early months. Early treatment such as speech therapy and minor surgery can help children with hearing impairment live a normal life. Read more

Homemade Soap, Shampoo and Body Wash for Baby
Every mother loves to see her baby enjoy the first moments in the water and then start playing around with enormous excitement. Taking care of your little one is your utmost priority and you would go out of your way to purchase the best baby shampoo or body wash available in the market. But no matter how safe they say it is, there is always a chance of it containing some chemicals. Having a baby shampoo made of natural substances is not difficult when you can literally make the same at home with a few ingredients.
Why is it Good to Use Homemade Baby Products for your Child?
Although you might choose to opt for baby cleansing products from well-established brands right off the bat, it is in your best interest to switch to a homemade version of the same as soon as you can.
Commercial products get expensive as they get safer and more convenient for your child.
Even the so-called “organic” products tend to make use of artificial preservatives and fragrances.
The manufacturing process could introduce certain chemicals into the solution.
Homemade products are more gentle on your baby and take care of his hair as well as his skin.
The fragrances and aromas used to remind the baby of a homely place and can be relaxing and sleep-inducing for your child, too.
How to Make and Use these Homemade Products for your Baby?
In order to get you started with making your very own homemade baby care products for your child, we have put together a few basic recipes that can are easy and convenient to proceed with.
1. Baby Soap
With this homemade baby soap recipe, you can make a nice bar of customized soap for your kid.
Ingredients Needed
Coconut oil, 90g
Jojoba oil, 30g
Olive oil, 750g
Lye, 120g
Distilled water, 300g
Essential oils, 15g
How To Make
Block the sink and fill it with cold water and ice to act as a cooling bath.
Wear rubber gloves. Take a pitcher and add distilled water to it. Follow it up by pouring in the lye very slowly. Do it outdoors since fumes will rise and it will heat up. Place this in the cooling bath until it reaches a temperature of 38 degrees.
In parallel, put together the oils in a pot and heat it to the same temperature. It is necessary for both elements to be at 38 degrees at the same time.
Then, pour the lye mixture into the oils and keep stirring until lines start forming in the mixture. This takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Add some more oils to this mixture and stir again.
Pour this mixture into a mould and let it cool down to form the soap.
How To Use
The soap will take some time to harden and reduce its alkaline nature. This needs to happen for around 6 weeks or so.
Once cured, the soap can be used by creating lather in your hands and then applying to the baby. The soft creamy nature of the soap is extremely comforting to the child.
2. Baby Shampoo
The various ingredients used in making the baby shampoo at home, work together in forming a solution that is great to smell, moisturizes the skin, as well as cleanses the body properly.
Ingredients Needed
Liquid castile soap, 1 cup
Vegetable glycerine, 1 teaspoon
Lavender oil, 15 drops
Coconut oil, 2 tablespoons
Water, 1 cup
How To Make
Take a plastic jar and add water to it.
Follow this up by pouring in the liquid castile soap into it gradually. Mix the entire solution together as properly as possible.
For added softness and aroma, pour in the glycerine and follow it up with the lavender oil drops. These need to be stirred into the mixture.
Store this solution in a dispenser or another container.
How To Use
Before dispensing any, make sure you shake the bottle or the dispenser properly.
Take a small amount of the solution on a sponge or a cloth used to clean the baby.
Use your hands and some water to create a nice lather before rinsing your little one. Too much solution can make his skin greasier than usual
3. Baby Body Wash
Some people prefer using a baby wash instead of a soap because it is much more convenient to use and tends to have a better texture than any other soap.
Ingredients Needed
Distilled water, 1 cup
Dispenser
Castile soap, 2 tablespoons
Organic coconut oil, 1 tablespoon
How To Make
It might be necessary to melt the coconut oil before beginning the process since organic coconut oil can solidify quite easily.
With all the ingredients in place, take a bowl and add them one by one into it. Make sure you stir the mixture after each ingredient is added to create as homogenous a mixture as possible.
Once the mixture is prepared, open the dispenser and pour the mixture into it.
Make sure you use a dispensing mouth that has a foaming installation on it.
How To Use
Prior to your baby’s bath, wet his body a little to create a nice base.
Shake the dispenser well and take a small amount of the solution on your hand.
Rub the solution in your palms to create the initial lather and then apply it to the baby.
Rinse gently so that more lather is formed and the body is cleansed properly.
Once you know how to make homemade baby shampoo and other cleaning products, you can get started on creating customised aromatic soaps and washes for your little one and give him a bath that he enjoys the most.

The NICU Mother - A beautiful Beginning. A Journey of Strength and Love.
NICU. The word itself may make you wonder about little angels being pricked or wired or attached to devices etc which isn't a pretty sight to watch. However, these small neonates or preemies are the most strongest fighters that I have witnessed. Iam a NICU mother, sharing the journey along with my baby. The joy of holding my baby for the very first time came true when I entered the NICU after three days of birth. Until then the wait was full of anxiety and excitement. My tiny bundle of joy was so small that I was scared to hold him first. The tears were of mixed emotions tricking down my cheeks. My baby was full term but underweight, so he spent around 14 days in the NICU. Being monitored for blood sugar levels was the most important aspect. Plenty of other tests were carried out daily including ultrasounds too. Blood sugar tests were done every 2-3 hourly in the beginning, which was difficult to see. I, wearing an NICU gown cap and slippers with fully sterilizing my hands would enter in the warm bed of my baby, pick him up and learn to make him feed.
Teaching the baby to breastfeed was the most challenging part in the beginning, as he was receiving formula with spoon regularly. While I was having a difficult time pumping milk all day in my hospital room. With a c - section, and pain in the stitches sitting up and pumping milk was a huge task. At first the nurses would press and remove milk but this process was painfull. Then I used a manual hand breast pump. But, this too was painfull, as my shoulders and arms would end up in pain. My mom supported me in the entire process, without whom I would have been literally shattered. Every two hourly milk had to expressed for my baby. Then I was called to hold the baby sit on a chair and make him feed. He didn't feed at all, almost trying for one - two hours I would land up feeding him expressed breast milk via spoon.
My baby had become very friendly with the nurses around him. Duties would change every few hours and he knew all of them. He would look at them and communicate via his facial expressions. The nurses would play even some music for him in the night to put him to sleep. I, would stand near the door and watch all this. Sometimes, I would also feel little insecure, thoughts that will my baby recognize or stay with me after discharge would come up every now and then. Anxiety of taking care of him by myself later on would be at the back of my mind. Will I be a good mother? How will I handle such a small baby at home?
List of dos and don'ts were given to me at the time of discharge. For two months I had to strictly adhere to all the rules given by my pediatric. Utmost care was to be taken at home, he said only two people can handle the baby after sterilizing our hands. Without that we could not even touch our baby.
My child's naming ceremony took place in the NICU itself. It was a very emotional time for the entire family. We shared some special moments in the NICU holding our baby together in our arms. To sum it up I would just say that my NICU baby is now seven months old,all hail and hearty. After eight long years of wait, this precious gift of God was worth all the pain efforts and hardships that we both - my baby and me faced. My baby emerged as strong and brave warrior prince and still continues fighting little hurdles on his way. Me, as a mother Iam still in a learning process, but I have gained strength through my baby. Iam blessed. The NICU mother's journey continues... See you on the other side soon! Read more

Preparation and Celebration of My Diwali Festival
First of all Happy Diwali to everyone! As the saying goes cleanliness is next to godliness, my Diwali started by cleaning the home. I got rid of all the unwanted things and cleaned every nook and corner of my home. This year I used eco-friendly products to clean my home, I am very happy with the outcome and also the decision. I felt tired because of continuous cleaning work that went on for 4 days. Then I decided to go out and feel the air filled with the festive spirit and I bought dresses for my family, purchased pooja items, earthen lamps and firecrackers. Shopping for Diwali makes me overcome my tiredness and regain my lost energy. We prepared anjeer burfi, laddu, murukku and mixture for Diwali sweets and snacks. We were ready for Diwali and the day had finally arrived. Hurray!
Today is Diwali, we woke up early and followed the ritual by applying sesame oil on our heads and completed our Ganga Snanam. We wore new clothes and jewellery. The puja room was decorated with flowers and poo kolam. We kept floating candles in a fishbowl and placed it in the centre of the dining table. It was well-appreciated. Then we performed puja to seek blessings from God and all the elders at home. Then lit home with handmade earthen lamps. We all know bursting crackers is one of the most joyous parts of celebrating Diwali but we minimally purchased crackers keeping in mind the recent supreme court guidelines for bursting crackers. We bursted fire-crackers during the allocated time slot. The best part is that I celebrated Diwali with my son. I was excited when he held a sparkler with my help and he enjoyed watching fireworks without any fear. My son easily adapts to change even though he is merely 14 months old. Then we went for our breakfast which included different kinds of mouth-watering homemade and store-bought sweets, South Indian special idli with sambhar and other snacks from our neighbours. It was a big breakfast followed by watching tv shows. We wished our friends & relatives a happy Diwali and shared sweets and gifts. This Diwali is really very special for me with a lot of happy and sweet memories.

Tips on Relocating to a New City
Be it for a job or just for a new beginning, relocating to a new city is never easy no matter how much you may be looking forward to it. So, in your bid to explore greener pastures here are some cues to ensure you don’t end up disappointing yourself.
Uprooting yourself from your comfort zone and treading into unknown waters is a move you definitely need to put thought and planning into. Here are some tips on relocating to another city that will keep you in good stead.
Tips for Moving to a New City
1. Choosing Your Neighbourhood
When planning a move to a new city your first point should be scouting for a house or apartment in a convenient location. Find a centrally located place that is close to your workplace, your child's school and all necessary amenities like the grocery shop, pharmacy and a hospital.
2. Get a Feel for The Place
When you're moving to a new city, you need to take some time to get familiar with your surroundings. In the meantime, you'll be better off staying with a friend or a relative for the first few months or in a paying guest where there’ll be others to help you get a feel for the place.
3. Safety First
Here’s what to do when you are moving to a place where the crime rate is on the high. Always remember to be aware of your surroundings and live in a well-populated area. Having people around you will make you feel more secure in your surroundings. After all it’s better to be safe than sorry.
4. Go Out and Make Friends
If you're alone in a new city with no friends and family, you need to know how to survive moving. Being alone with nothing to do and no one to talk to can be overwhelming. Make friends at your new place of work and go out with them even if you’re not feeling up to it. If you prefer keeping to yourself instead, don’t hole yourself up at home, instead explore your new neighbourhood. Make sure you keep these points in your list of things to do in a new city.
5. Give Yourself Time to Acclimatise
Being alone in a new city can make one terribly homesick. Your first instinct would be to take the next flight back home. Don’t give into your instinct so easily. Instead, allow each day to strengthen your willpower. A change requires a lot of adjustment and patience. Give yourself at least six months to make a go at it. As the days turn into months you might just find yourself falling in love with the place.
Moving to a new city is no easy feat. You may have read up on the place, even visited it on a holiday, and made your mind to settle there. There are endless reasons for your move. The stark reality of relocating is a different story and we hope these tips help you take a step in the right direction. Read more
