Painless Delivery- Procedure, Pros and Cons
The intense pain that a woman goes through during childbirth can be very severe and can measure above 8 on a scale of 10. This pain can be unbearable for many women, especially women going through their first pregnancy. However, with advancements in medicine, many women have the option of opting for pain relief methods to reduce the severity of the pain and enjoy the experience of childbirth.
There has been a huge spike in the number of women choosing pain relief methods during childbirth. The trend is common, especially among educated women who are aware of the benefits of the procedure and weigh the benefits and the risks to make a choice that is well suited for them.
What is Painless Delivery and is It Possible to Achieve It?
A painless normal delivery is achieved by administering an epidural anaesthesia to the mother during labour. This is a regional anaesthesia which can stop the pain in a particular part of the body. During labour, this is injected to the lower back of the women, which allows them to be comfortable throughout the process of childbirth, have some respite from the severe labour pains and experience an almost painless delivery.
Women with a lower threshold for pain or women who become pregnant after their thirties, tend to opt for C-sections as their ability to bear labour pain can be quite low. An epidural anaesthesia gives these women a chance at normal delivery by cutting down the pain to a large extent.
What is the Procedure of Painless Childbirth?
During the process of painless childbirth, you will be given intravenous or IV fluids before you receive the epidural. You will then be instructed to arch your back and stay still while sitting up. This position can increase the effectiveness of the epidural and prevent any issues.
After wiping your waistline with an antiseptic solution, your lower back will be injected with a local anaesthesia to numb it. A needle is then injected into this numbed region around your spinal cord on the lower back. After threading a thin catheter through this needle into the epidural area, the needle is removed and the catheter is taped. This catheter is used to inject the epidural anaesthesia during labour.
The drug is administered as required during pregnancy which numbs the pelvis and the region below it. However, you remain conscious and can watch the baby being delivered, while experiencing little to no pain.
Painless Delivery - Advantages and Disadvantages
Some of the pros and cons of opting for painless injection for normal delivery are as follows.
Pros
Provides relief while retaining consciousness and mobility to watch the baby being born.
Helps the mother cope better with fatigue and postpartum depression.
Since it offers significant pain relief, the body doesn’t release stress hormones. Stress hormones are known to adversely affect the mother and cause distress to the baby.
This procedure can lower the blood pressure of the mother, which makes it beneficial for women with high levels of blood pressure. Blood pressure, if not controlled effectively, can get even higher during childbirth and may result in a stroke.
It allows for switching to an instrumental or forceps delivery without the need for additional anaesthesia.
Adding an epidural catheter can make it possible to switch to a caesarean delivery if required.
The duration of childbirth is lowered to a large extent.
It is well suited for patients with conditions like heart diseases or preeclampsia.
2. Cons
There could be a sudden drop in blood pressure which may affect the heart rate of the baby.
Due to numbness in the pelvic region or pelvis relaxation, you may find it difficult to push the baby so that doctors may have to switch to a forceps or a Caesarean delivery.
There could be dizziness or a backache or shivering on certain occasions.
If there is leakage of the spinal fluid, it could cause headaches.
You could have difficulty urinating.
There may be soreness or pain in the back where the injection is given.
You may experience numbness in the lower half of your body for a few hours after childbirth.
There are very rare cases of irreversible damage caused to the nerves near the area where the catheter was inserted.
Certain studies suggest that the baby may have trouble breastfeeding or latching on to the breast.
Who Should Have This Procedure?
In certain cases, doctors advise women to opt for painless birth delivery. It can be recommended for you in the following cases:
If you have certain medical conditions like preeclampsia, heart conditions or hypertension.
If you’ve had a caesarean delivery during your previous pregnancy and prefer a vaginal birth for the subsequent one.
If you’ve had a prior labour that was prolonged or complicated, then the doctors will advise you to opt for painless delivery to provide relief to both you and the baby.
Who Should Avoid It?
There are certain cases when an epidural is not advised for women. If you have any of the conditions mentioned below, it is best to steer clear of epidural anaesthesia during delivery.
Women with bleeding disorders are at an increased risk of hematoma or spinal haemorrhage that can cause permanent neurological damage.
Prior surgery on the lower back: Scar tissues and risk of infection may rule out the possibility of receiving an epidural anaesthesia.
Skin infection in the epidural region: Injecting a needle may pose a risk of the infection spreading further.
Blood clotting: Women with blood clotting disorders are usually on blood thinners like heparin. This may cause excessive bleeding during delivery, especially near the spine and pose a risk of paralysis.
Neurological diseases: Since the needles are placed close to the spinal cord, there is a possibility of damage to the neural tissues.
Are There Any Chances of Failure of This Procedure?
While there is no standard data on the failure rate of the procedure, it is possible for an epidural anaesthesia to fail. This could be because of the incorrect placement of the needle, migration of the catheter after the initial placement, anatomical challenges in the patient that may make it harder to inject the needle, suboptimal dosage of drugs, or an unexpectedly quick delivery which the anaesthesiologist hadn’t predicted.
Does It Increase the Possibility of Caesarean Section?
There is no tangible evidence that receiving an epidural can raise your chances of having a C-section. However, in theory, if you’ve opted for normal delivery without pain through epidural anaesthesia, there may be a slow progress of labour as your muscles are weakened due to the numbness. Also, if there is a dip in your blood pressure or instances of foetal distress you may have a caesarean delivery. It is also possible that in case of a strong epidural block, your ability to push is limited and there will a failure in the progress of the labour. In such cases an emergency C-section is necessary.
Many women today prefer to go for the painless delivery method to prevent going through excruciating pain during labour. Epidural is one of the most sought-after painless delivery options that most women prefer during childbirth. You can speak to your doctor and inquire about the different types of pain relief methods available to you during labour and make an informed choice. Even though you don’t plan on taking an epidural, you can always discuss with the medical practitioner about your options to have a comfortable delivery process.

Corrected Age for Premature Babies
Would you treat a 12-month-old child who was born 3 months earlier as a one-year-old or a nine-month-old? This answer can make a huge difference in your child’s growth.
What is the Corrected Age or Adjusted age?
Corrected age is an adjustment in age used by doctors if your child was born early to determine when he should reach specific milestones. The age a baby would be if he had been born on his due date is called an adjusted age. This age is very useful to determine the baby’s growth and overall development.
The baby’s age can be calculated in two different ways.
1. Chronological Age
Determining the baby’s age by counting the number of days, weeks, or years from the day he was born is called chronological age.
2. Adjusted Age
This is based on the baby’s due date. This is mostly used to evaluate the baby’s development.
Meanwhile, their chronological age is not considered because many babies may not have developed many functions such as breathing, maintaining body heat, etc.
Importance of Corrected Age
The developments of babies’ brains happen in two important ways. The first one is based on the preprogrammed biological sequence and the second one is the reaction to outside experiences.
Most of the time, the growth of the child cannot be hurried without the completion of development in the preprogrammed sequence. So when you are trying to understand if your premature baby is developing normally, knowing the baby’s corrected age will turn out to be helpful. For example, if your one-year-old prematurely born baby has not yet started to crawl, think of your baby’s age as nine months, which makes it absolutely normal. There is no need to worry. During the early years of his life, corrected age is required.
How to Calculate Adjusted Age in Premature Babies
It is very simple to calculate the corrected age of your baby. Start with the baby’s actual age in weeks from the day he was born and then subtract that value from the number of weeks the baby was preterm. This value is the adjusted age of the baby.
It could get tiresome explaining many people as to why your baby is so small. You don’t have to worry because you will need to explain this only till the kid reaches 2 to 2 ½ years. By this age, they will catch up developmentally.
When is Adjusted Age Not Useful?
Using the corrected age for early intervention services is not a good idea for your child. The child’s need for services is greater as his uncorrected age would make him seem older.
However, when celebrating your child’s birthday, you should calculate the birthday from the day he/she was born.
Can the Corrected Age Affect a Premature Baby's Development?
In just two or three years, most prematurely born babies accomplish the same developmental milestones. If any other differences are seen after that, then it is most likely to be due to individual differences and not because of the premature birth. There are a few cases where the babies take a longer time to catch up developmentally.
Whom to Tell About the Child’s Corrected Age
In the early years, the child’s corrected age will explain a lot of characteristics that look like delays in the growth and development of the baby. It is important to know how early your child was born. It is best to let anyone who cares for or works with your child know your preemie’s adjusted age. This may include the child’s care teacher, preschool teachers, and health professionals.
Is It Okay to Stop Using the Corrected Age?
There has never been a rule on when to stop using the corrected age, but most doctors recommend using this age until the child has reached two years. At this age, your child will start developing like everybody else. After two years, if your child is still behind, then the doctors would start focusing on the expected rate of growth of the child.
How to Answer Child’s Questions Related to Your Child's Development
At times you might find it hard to explain the corrected age of your child to the people around you, but this can turn out to be very helpful. For example, if someone notices your six-month child is not able to sit up, then you can tell them that he was born three months earlier. So in that perspective, he is only three months old, and he is doing everything a 3-month-old child normally does. This way, your preemie’s adjusted age milestones are on track.
How Does Adjusted Age Affect Child’s Play and Interaction?
You may notice that your prematurely born child does less when compared to the other kids of the same chronological age. But when thought of in terms of the child’s adjusted age, he is doing what a child his age usually does. Your child can learn a lot from experiencing the things around him; for example, being read to, walking to the park, and interacting with other kids. All these different environments help to develop the child’s brain.
Starting Preschool for Premature Babies With Corrected Age
There is a chance your child might start schooling according to his chronological age and not his adjusted age.
But especially at preschool, a few months can make a huge difference to what your child can do and what she is expected to do. There are some parents who decide to delay a year if their chronological age is below the entry age. This can be useful for your child to catch up on his development, giving them extra time to cultivate and improve their social skills needed for preschool and school.
You can also ask for test results conducted between your child’s corrected age and chronological ages if your child is assessed with delays in overall development and growth.
Immunizations for Corrected Age Infants
Babies who are prematurely born usually get the same immunization as other babies of the same chronological age. Immunizations are very important for premature babies because they need immunity as they are more susceptible to specific infections.
Prematurely born babies usually get their first immunizations when they’re still at the hospital. Extra doses of vaccines might be given when the child gets older.
Your paediatrician is the best person to seek advice from, and she will know what you’re child needs.
Your family or friends may initially find it difficult to understand the difference between chronological and corrected age, and even actual age. You can help them understand the importance and why it is calculated. Be sure to stay attentive and interactive with your child. Allow them to play and interact with other kids which will help them move towards normal development.

Reasons Why It's Better to Choose Healthy Eating Over Clean Eating
Off late, new-age wellness has seen a lot of different trends that keep cropping up regularly. There’s veganism, detox diets, the growing popularity of organic foods - and now, joining the bandwagon of popular trends is ‘clean eating’! Plenty of wellness bloggers and fitness enthusiasts have been trying their hand (or mouth!) at eating clean, with varying results to show for it. But is eating clean really worth all the hype?
First of All, What is Clean Eating?
Clean eating is based on the principle of eating food that’s as close to its natural state as possible. This means packaged and processed foods are totally out of the picture, and home-cooked, plant-based meals rule supreme. Food with high levels of sugar need to be replaced with fruit or their healthier counterparts and lean proteins should be the preferred choice of meat.
When the instructions sound so straightforward, it does sound like we’re talking about healthy eating habits right? Well, turns out that clean eating has its differences, and these differences should probably make you move towards healthy eating, rather than clean eating.
4 Reasons Why You Need to Eat Healthy Than Eat Clean
While clean eating is based on the principles of healthy eating, the former could be more trouble than it’s worth.
1. Healthy Eating is More Suitable for the Long-term
An extreme clean eating plan can prohibit you from ever looking in the direction of sugar, gluten, dairy, alcohol, and all things deemed inorganic and unhealthy. The change can be a bit too drastic for someone who finds dieting difficult, let alone cut out any bit of food that can offer joy! While there are certain things you can slowly cut out of your diet and will do you good too, saying no to anything that isn’t organic or locally produced is bound to get difficult after a point - especially if there isn’t a dire need for such an action.
On the other hand, healthy eating requires you to find a balance between different food groups and incorporate it all into your diet in the right proportion. This ensures that you’re not quitting anything cold-turkey and have a bit of everything to eat, making it a friendlier style of eating to adopt over the long term.
2. Healthy Eating Promotes a Healthy Attitude Towards Food
Imagine attributing virtue and goodness to all things green and freshly cultivated without as much as a speck of a chemical in sight, then looking down upon ‘evil, processed foods’ like that bag of chips you so loved - till you began eating clean. Restrictive ways of eating not only put certain foods on a pedestal, but completely diminish any value of foods that do not meet the diet’s standards. What this does is slowly turn you against such ‘bad’ foods, feel anxious because you crave for them, but feel wracked with guilt once you’ve so much as had a tiny piece.
Sometimes, it’s important to understand that if a particular kind of ‘unhealthy’ food makes you feel good and is your once-in-a-while treat to yourself, that too is an important aspect of treating your body right! A healthy relationship with your body calls for an equally important relationship with what’s on your plate!
3. Healthy Eating Ensures That You Don’t Miss Out on Any Nutrients
Cutting out food groups or steering clear of certain foods because you couldn’t find their organic alternatives can make you deficient in certain nutrients over a period of time. Unless there is an absolute necessity to go gluten-free (you have celiac disease, for example) or dairy-free (lactose intolerance is a pain!), don’t scratch such products out of your daily diet forever; it’s only going to cause you more harm than good!
Healthy eating helps you gain a balance between various food groups, thus ensuring that you get a bit of everything and that your nutrient quota is satisfied!
4. Clean Eating Can Aggravate Eating Disorders
If you were already battling an eating disorder, clean eating can push you over the edge, or cause you to become prone to orthorexia, the rigid and wrong obsession with clean eating. This is not to say that everyone who tries clean eating is going to turn into gluten-free-dairy-free-sugar-free-all-things-free monsters overnight! But if your mental health takes an unhealthy turn once you start with your clean eating regime, i.e. you feel unhappy, unhealthier, dissatisfied, and completely uncomfortable with your relationship with food, etc. then you probably need to reassess if the plan is right for you.
Given that healthy eating doesn’t focus on depriving you of foods or make you feel guilty for eating something you’d wanted, your relationship with food stays healthy, making you less prone to developing any eating disorders.
Things to Keep in Mind While Adopting the ‘Clean AND Healthy Eating’ Plan
If you feel like you want to stick to the clean eating plan, make sure you go about it the healthy way! Here’s everything you can do:
Find a balance between the various food groups. Do not restrict yourself from any in particular, unless there is a strong reason to do so.
Don’t cut the unhealthy stuff out of your life entirely. Sure, a chocolate bar isn’t the healthiest snack out there, but indulging in your guilty pleasures once in a while will only make you feel better! Just make sure that they don’t become too frequent in nature.
Make changes slowly. If you’re not really a veggie person, a salad bowl for lunch is just going to depress you. Why subject yourself to something so drastic so soon? Instead, add healthy components to your dishes on a daily basis, while slowly phasing out elements you could do without. This also helps you stick to your plan over the long-term because your body gets time to adjust to the changes you’re making.
Understand that ‘organic’ doesn’t always mean healthy. If you’re gorging on your gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free cookie thinking that you’re helping your body out, bad news - a cookie is still a cookie. It can be packed with calories or fats which are not doing your body any favours!
Home-cooked foods - easy, nutritious, delicious - can help you stay on track more than depending on restaurant dishes or packed foods that claim to be 100% healthy. At least you’re sure of what’s going into the dish you’re cooking!
As is the case with anything that’s good, benefits can only be reaped if it isn’t exploited in excess or overdone. Eat healthily, eat clean, but let loose once in a while and give your body what it asks for - that’s how you ensure that you stay on the right track!

A. You can check with an ovulation kit if it is positive then you can certainly go ahead with the conception because ovulation kit is going to give you 100% clarity whether you are ovulating or not with that you can try practising if you can conceive the same time

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much. Please eat iron and calcium rich food items like spinach and pomegranate. You can also take iron rich supplements but only after consulting with your doctor. Please drink Shaadmani Blue fusion green tea which is good in this condition. Also take eggs and chicken and drink chicken soup. Please take lots of green vegetables and dairy products and soaked almonds.
Thanks and take care

A. A lot of times normal delivery is actually seen in these cases also if the doctor is quick and the child cooperate then yes normal delivery is very much possible but some doctors don’t take a chance with the health of your child and so they normally suggest C-section so let’s see what’s your situation by the end when you are into your labour
