Excessive Yawning in Babies - Is It a Concern?
Yawning is a natural reflex in babies which persists even into adulthood. When you see your little one yawn, you will wonder how someone could be so cute. But if your little one yawns too much, you will no doubt get worried. Yawning is an involuntary action and if your baby is drowsy or fatigued, he will yawn more than often and it is normal. But if you notice him yawning excessively even when he had had a good night sleep, it can be a cause of concern.
Is Yawning Common Among Infants?
Yawning is a natural process. Everyone yawns several times through the day. And as far as infants are concerned, it is common for them to yawn. If your baby yawns, it's a sign that he is healthy and is developing normally.
Why Do Babies Yawn?
The actual cause of yawning is not clear. Some research suggests that babies yawn when they are tired. And some studies show that yawning is triggered when the brain is in need of oxygen. So there is no exact cause for the same. Furthermore, babies can also yawn because of lack of sleep, excessive sleep, hunger, fatigue, or even boredom.
What Is the Normal Frequency of Yawning in Babies?
On average, a human baby yawns anywhere between 30 and 50 times a day, as opposed to an adult human's count of 20 yawns a day. Babies yawn more after waking up - it's completely natural and there is nothing wrong with that. It is believed that we yawn after a good sleep because it is our bodies' attempt to send in more oxygen to the brain and cool our bodies. You may see your infant yawning more frequently when he is not fully awake. In most cases, babies yawn when they are sleepy or after getting good sleep. I yawning while sleeping is also not uncommon.
Is Yawning Contagious?
It is believed that yawning is contagious. This is an indication of a phenomenon known as echophenomena, the imitation of another person's word or actions. It is commonly known as contagious yawning. However, not everyone is affected by this phenomenon. And your little one may not always yawn, if he notices you yawning.
What Causes Excessive Yawning in Babies?
If your baby yawns frequently or excessively, it could be a sign that he is sleepy, tired, or bored. And if he yawns after waking up, it is his body's way of sending in more oxygen to the brain. However, if there is an unusual increase in your baby's yawning, then it could be because of some other reasons as well such as a sign of prenatal drug withdrawal. Babies also yawn when they are overheated, both externally and internally. If it gets too warm for your baby, remove the extra layers and make sure he is not uncomfortable. As far as internal heat is concerned, make sure your baby is well hydrated.
Is Excessive Yawning a Sign of Some Serious Problem?
While more often than not, yawning in babies doesn't necessarily indicate a serious illness, but it is always wise to be vigilant. Here are possible reasons why your baby may be yawning a lot.
1. Drowsiness
Drowsiness may seem like a trivial issue, but you can't always take it lightly, especially if your baby is always drowsy. You will have to consult your baby's doctor if this is the case.
2. Fatigue
Excessive yawning can be an indication that your baby is tired or lacking energy. You must make sure that your baby is getting a well-balanced diet and is getting all the nutrients he needs for proper growth and development. Also, make sure your baby is active enough by engaging him or her in activities like playing with toys.
3. Heart Ailments
Sometimes, excessive yawning can be an indication of an underlying threat like heart ailments. When the pumping of blood and oxygen is dysfunctional, the body induces yawns so more air and oxygen is taken in. If your baby is yawning extensively, consult the doctor at the earliest.
4. Excessive Weight
Babies look cute when they are fat and chubby. But if your baby weighs more than his optimal weight, it could be a problem as it could be a sign of a health issue. Sometimes excessive weight and obesity can cause your baby to yawn more than usual as well.
5. Epilepsy
If a newborn baby yawns excessively, it could be an indicator of an underlying disorder like epilepsy. If your little one yawns way too much and it continues for a period of time, you must consult a doctor and rule out the possibility of any complication.
How to Control Excessive Yawning in Infants
You can control excessive yawning in infants only when you try to figure out the root cause of the problem. If your baby yawns excessively because of lack of sleep, make sure he gets proper rest. Feed your baby healthy foods to ensure that he gets all the required nutrients. Make sure that your baby stays active.
Yawning, in general, is not a cause of concern, but if you notice a rise in the number of yawns each day in your baby and he doesn't sleep well, you must consult a doctor.

Diaper Rashes in Babies - Prevention and Cure
Diaper rashes are one of the most common concerns for every mother. There can be many reasons why diaper rashes develop in babies. No parent wants to see their baby crying due to pain. In this article, I will be discussing the major causes of diaper rashes and the precautions to be taken.
Reasons for Diaper Rashes
Following are the few reasons due to which diaper rashes occur.
1. Not Changing Diapers
The diapers need to be changed after every few hours or when you feel it is soiled. Negligence with changing the diaper is the major cause of rashes.
2. Sweat
In summers, sweat can also be a cause of diaper rashes. It is advisable to not use diapers in summers or only during emergencies.
3. Frequent Passing of Stools
In some babies, this is also the reason they pass stools very frequently and it leads to more contact of water with the skin. If the skin is not properly wiped after cleaning, it may lead to rashes.
4. Using Poor Quality Diapers
Using poor quality diapers will also lead to rashes. You should always use good quality diapers for your baby like Pampers and Huggies and only when required.
Precautions To Be Taken
Here are a few precautions that need to be taken to avoid rashes and treat them:
1. Change Diapers
You should change the diaper of your baby after every 4 hours or as soon as it becomes heavy or soiled.
2. Keep the Area Clean, Dry and Moisturised
After every urine or stool, clean your baby properly and then dry his bottoms with a cotton towel as wet skin is ground for rash formation. Then apply oil to the area. Coconut oil or olive oil should be
applied as oil becomes a barrier between the skin and urine.
3. Avoid Using Wet Wipes
You should avoid using wet wipes because they have chemicals and do not clean as well as compared to water. You should use wet cotton to clean the baby and then wipe it with cotton/ towel/ cotton hanky. Wet wipes should only be used if you are going out.
4. Avoid Diapers
You should avoid using diapers at home since it is summer time and you can easily change and wash the nappies. The nappies don’t take much time to dry and can be easily changed and are cost effective too. Diapers should only be used when you are going out, otherwise no need to use diapers.
5. Wash Your Hands
You should wash your hands before touching your baby and after changing the nappy as unwashed hands can cause allergies. These are a few causes and precautions to be used. I hope this is helpful for your baby.

Surprising Qualities That Are Unique To Babies Born During The Winter
Brrr...apart from sweaters, hot chocolate and cuddling in blankets, winter brings along with it festivities and excitement too. If your baby's due date or birthday fall in winter, then this time of the year is a series of endless celebration for you! Your winter baby is the apple of your eye and makes you feel warm and happy, even on the coldest days. But did you know that being born in winter gives your baby some qualities that are exclusive to only winter babies? Excited to know them?
Winter babies have endless festivals and celebrations around their birthday. Navratri and Diwali are still fresh in memory and there's Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year to look forward to. The skies are grey, the winds are cold, but that spot of occasional sunshine makes everything feel more beautiful than ever. In this setting, babies who are born are sure to imbibe some qualities of the season! As per science, there are some traits - both personality and health related - that are special to babies whose birthday falls during the winter months, i.e. typically November to March, if you live in India.
Here's a list of qualities that are unique to winter-born babies - some good and some that demand extra care and caution from your end. Find out now how many of these are coming true for your child!
1. They are Born Intelligent
Yes, it has been established that winter babies have greater brain power! This is one of the most common traits observed among winter babies. This conclusion has been derived from a number of comparative studies through the decades. As to why this happens, scientists are not very sure yet, but nutrients derived from seasonal foods in the winter are likely to play a role. So, if your little winter baby has already begun asking questions and taking interest in intellectual activities, encourage him as much as you can. This is only natural for him!
2. They Have a Happier and More Cheerful Temperament
Winter babies are also known to have a summer disposition – meaning they are more cheerful than summer babies! This is because seasonal changes have an effect on chemical substances in the brain which control mood – serotonin and dopamine. Babies born in summer have been observed to be much more irritable than ones born in cooler months. After all, even babies like pleasant, non-humid weather and celebrations around them!
3. They are More Well-Behaved Than Other Kids Their Age
If your baby was born in the winter and you notice that he is docile and follows instructions obediently, don't be surprised. Winter babies have been observed to be more well-behaved than other babies, and less likely to develop behavioural problems later in life. Curious, eh? But certainly very good news!
4. They Often Have Larger Body Frames
Don't mess with winter babies! They are known to have larger frames than other babies and also tend to weigh a little more. Even their heads tend to be larger heads than other babies of the same age who were born in summer. The most likely reason behind this phenomenon is that a mother who gives birth in spring or summer spends the last phase of her pregnancy in winter, and this is a time when she may eat fewer vitamins. This is something that mothers who deliver in early winter escape from.||
5. They Have a Greater Risk of Neurological Disorders
One of the primary risks winter babies face is that of neurological problems. While your winter baby may be good-natured, he may be prone to disoders related to the mood and the nervous system later in life. This happens mainly because a baby born in the winter is not exposed to some much-needed vitamins that sunlight provides. Here's a list of essential nutrients for your kids and the foods that can provide them - make sure you keep this in mind!
6. Their Bones May Be Weaker Than Their Fellow Children
This is one of the most common prolems faced by many kids born in the winter months. Again, this is due to the lack of sunlight in winter. Mothers of winter babies also do not recieve enough Vitamin D from sunglight and this is the Vitamin that strengthens bone structure. To make up for this, you need to be extra careful about your baby's diet and feed him vitamin-rich foods that will up his bone strength. Read this quick starter guide on ensuring that your baby gets adequate amounts of this important vitamin.
7. They May Be More Prone to Food Allergies
Uh-oh first weaker bones and now this! In a rather distressing observation, it has been found that winter babies are also prone to food-related allergies. You need to make sure you test your little one for these allergies and keep him away from any triggers. While not all winter bubs testify to this being true, of course, it is still a good idea to get your baby tested if you notice any problems. He will then be able to eat whatever he wishes if the tests are clear!
So, while there are certain problems your winter baby may be prone to, he will surely be an upbeat, positive little fellow who brings you tons of joy! Besides, a winter baby means that you get to enjoy all that extra snuggly cuddling without any sweatiness. And who can deny that little babies are even more adorable when all bundled up for the winter?
Make the most of your time with your little darling and remember that winter or summer, your love and care will help him overcome all odds! Read more

A Journey of Motherhood Through the Eyes of a New Mom
'Being a mother is one of the best experiences of life' - I must have heard this at least a hundred times in my thirty plus years, however, I can now say for a fact that this is true. It is the best phase of my life. There is no word created yet to describe the feeling of becoming a mother. I guess it's meant to be felt rather than limit it with explanations and definitions. Even then I'll try my best to translate this feeling into words.
It's beautiful. You feel this love for your child that no one but a mother can understand. Motherhood is a journey which I have just begun, and I have to say that I am thrilled as well as little scared at the same time. I don't know how it's going to tale but I am learning and my baby is my teacher. He is teaching me how to be a mother. His bright smile in the morning after a sleepless night teaches me to be patient. His innocence teaches me to be kind. His tiny body teaches me how to nurture and just his being teaches me to love. I don't remember being so grateful to God like I am right now. I smile too easily these days and tears flow equally fast. I understand another's a pain like my own and rejoice equally in their happiness. Maybe it's the hormones wreaking havoc or maybe it's the mother in me. I can't quite explain it. Like I said before it can only be felt.
Of course, there are struggles. My body aches from all the rocking, walking and carrying. I feel tired and worrying has become second nature. Is he getting enough milk? He just sneezed, has he got the flu? Why is he not smiling today? Why is he not sleeping? Why is he sleeping so much? Such thoughts can drive anyone mad. However, all the singing that I am doing these days is keeping me sane. Creativity is at its peak. I've composed a lot of senseless songs and lullabies and am thinking of having it recorded and sent to some music directors. Get ready Mr. Rehman ?. I have also invented a lot of words mostly to be used in loud baby voices while making weird faces ?. This is what motherhood does to you. But the worries and the pain pale out when you find your little one smiling at you for no reason at all.
I feel like I have found my purpose. Many of you might argue that a woman's purpose is so much more and I agree. I am all for woman empowerment but being a mother just feels like what I was meant to be. I am sure many of you mommies out might be nodding your head in agreement. Now, I want to take care of myself, I watch my words and am more aware of how I behave because I don't live just for myself but for a tiny person who looks up to me. This is what motherhood has made me. A new person. To the world, I have given a new life but in reality, I have been given a new life.

Q. hi everyone good morning,
sorghum can I give to my 10 month baby is it safe or not please revert I waiting for your reply
Dr Vandan H Kumar

A. yes
whenever you give any new food to the child you have to take care of two things.
you should give in small quantity. if the child doesn't develop any digestion problem in next 24 hours to 48 hours and the child is able to digest that food then that food can be given again.
but if the child is not able to digestc or there is some problem with vomiting or loose motion or colic pain then kindly avoid that food.
we wait for 2 to 3 days to confirm whether the child is having any problem to that particular food or not
