8 Weeks Pregnant: What To Expect
When you have been pregnant for 8 weeks, you are on the verge of completing two-thirds of your first trimester. You may still not be able to flaunt your baby bump at this point, but you will make your first visit to the obstetrician and gynaecologist. An ultrasound scan may also be recommended to determine the progress of your pregnancy. You will be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat for the first time during the ultrasound scan!

Your Baby's Growth During Pregnancy - Week 8
There has been a substantial amount of progress since week 7 in your baby. The baby is growing almost at a rate of 1mm per day. The formation of bones, spinal cord and intestine have begun too. Around this time, the retina starts to develop its pigment. The embryo looks more defined, and you can see where your baby's limbs will be. Your baby would have also begun to develop a nose, lips and eyelids. The little protrusion in the spine or the tail is almost lost by week 8. Your baby’s heart rate is 150 to 170 times per minute.
What Is The Baby's Size?
Your baby is still very tiny by week eight but rapid development and growth are happening with each passing day. When you are eight weeks pregnant, baby size is almost two centimetres long. The skin at this stage is still very transparent. Various internal and external organs begin to form too.
Common Body Changes
Your body changes during pregnancy, and you may notice following changes in your body by this time:
Your breasts are growing and preparing for lactation.
Your uterus is growing and pressing against your bladder, resulting in frequent urination.
Your growing uterus may also cause cramping around your abdominal area.
Increased blood supply to your breast results in varicose veins. Your areola may become darker than usual because the hormones oestrogen and progesterone cause an increase in pigmentation.
The nipples become prominent and may secrete high-octane milk which is also called colostrum.
Symptoms Of Pregnancy At Week 8
You may experience the following symptoms at 8 weeks of pregnancy:
Increased sense of smell:
You may experience a heightened sense of smell as there is more blood rushing to your brain making your responses extra sharp. However, the odours or smells you may have never paid heed to might bother you now and could also trigger nausea.
Nausea and morning sickness:
You may feel nauseous around this time because of various factors such as stress, oestrogen, or a sensitive stomach.
Breast soreness:
You may feel soreness and tenderness in your breasts as they are becoming bigger and the getting ready for breastfeeding.
Constipation:
Constipation is very common during this time of the pregnancy as progesterone slows down the digestive process, making bowel movement difficult. Have lots of fluids to keep constipation at bay.
The feeling of fatigue:
Due to fluctuating hormones in pregnancy, you may feel fatigued and tired. Adequate rest is very important for an expecting mother.
Cramps:
You may experience cramping at around 8 weeks of pregnancy. It is very common as your abdominal muscles and uterus are expanding.
Your Belly At 8 Weeks Of Pregnancy
Your belly may show a little or not show at all; it depends on many factors. In case you are carrying twins or more babies, then your belly may show by 8 weeks. However, in a single pregnancy, you may have a slight or no belly bump at all. The uterus and abdominal muscles are expanding, so this time, a mommy-to-be is expected to gain around half a pound (0.2 kg) per week. This means by the end of week eight, you may have gained 4 to 6 pounds (1.8 – 2.7 kg). But if you are experiencing nausea and morning sickness, then you may not have gained this much weight. In case you feel concerned about your weight gain or belly size, it is recommended to get in touch with your doctor.
8 Weeks Ultrasound
At around 8 weeks of pregnancy, your doctor may recommend your first ultrasound scan. You will get to see your baby for the first time during the scan. It will be a little difficult for you to figure out your baby, as it is too tiny at this juncture. But you may be able to listen to the heartbeat of your baby. Your baby is moving in your belly; little hands and toes are forming too.
What To Eat?
If you are battling with morning sickness, then you may develop an aversion to food. But it is very important to pay heed to your diet and nutrition in pregnancy. You should opt for small, frequent meals rather than be filling your tummy in one meal. It is also recommended to include loads of fluids in your diet to protect yourself from getting dehydrated. Your 8th-week pregnancy food should include the following:
Your diet should include 3 to 4 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables as they have high fibre content and can prevent constipation. Do not eat preserved or packed fruits and vegetables as they have high sugar and salt content.
Cereals and grains should be added to your diet. It is recommended to opt for whole grains instead of refined ones. Include starchy food such as rice in your diet as it will provide you with the energy needed to fuel your baby’s growth.
You should also include protein-rich foods as they are the building blocks that will be needed to make the baby grow. These foods include chicken, lean meat, fish and eggs. The vegetarian moms-to-be can opt for pulses to compensate for their daily protein intake.
It is important to add dairy products to meet the growing calcium demand in pregnancy. Milk, curd, cheese, etc., should also be included in your diet.
You should also take any vitamin supplements that may be recommended by your doctor. Usually, calcium and folic acid supplements are recommended.
Tips & Care
It is important for the mom-to-be to be careful about her health all the time. Following are some dos and don’ts that are recommended in week 8 of pregnancy:
Dos
Have light and frequent meals to avoid nausea.
Keep yourself well hydrated by having plenty of fluids.
Don'ts
Don’t eat spicy food as it could cause heartburn
Don’t take medicines without a prescription from your doctor as this could have an adverse reaction in your body.
What You Need to Shop
There might be a few things that you need to shop for around this time, such as:
Pregnancy books: to keep you updated on each stage of pregnancy
Comfortable bras: for the breast tenderness and the increased breast size
Good moisturisers: to ease the increasing dryness
Comfortable pants: for the increasing belly size. You can opt for loose, stretchable pants and trousers to accommodate the constantly changing size of your belly
With each passing day, you are experiencing new feelings and emotions. You are crossing new benchmarks of pregnancy with each week. Your baby is growing and making remarkable developmental changes by 8 weeks of pregnancy.

Burping Baby While Sleeping - Importance and Tips
Feeding on a bottle or breastfeeding can have a calming effect on the baby, and as a result, they might fall asleep right after the feeding session. However, this can become a problem if they have swallowed a lot of air during their mealtime, and not releasing this air can make it more difficult for them to relax. This is why many parents find making their baby burp during their sleep very important, but finding ways to burp them while sleeping can be challenging. If you are looking for ways for your baby to have a comfortable naptime while making them burp, then read on to learn more!
Why is Burping Important?
When drinking milk, babies tend to swallow a lot of air that usually collects in their stomachs. This can later cause discomfort during their feeding session or while they are napping after and lead to problems like excessive crying and squirming in discomfort. Swallowing air is not the only thing that might lead to bubbles getting stuck in your baby’s stomach. A few other reasons include digestion, allergic reactions or food intolerance to a particular good, the feeder’s diet in breastfeeding, and nipple flow. These problems can cause the little one some uneasiness, so burping is vital for parents to focus on after feeding.
Once you start trying different methods, you will quickly find out what the burp cycles of your baby are and whether they need to be burped during or after their mealtime. Your baby might not burp after every mealtime, and that is okay. However, if your baby has a lot of spit-ups and gas, you should talk to the doctor about it and learn more about their refluxes.
How to Burp a Sleeping Baby
It is possible to make your baby burp while sleeping without waking them up completely. Here is the step by step instructions on how to burp a sleeping baby:
1. Shoulder
The shoulder method is perfect for babies who have a deep sleep. It could also be a helpful method for people who want to wake them up to continue their feeding. In this method:
Place the baby upright and make them lean against your upper chest. Place one hand below their bottom like they are sitting on your arm. The head of the baby has to be on top of your shoulder.
Now, use your other hand to pat between their shoulder blades gently. Let the pats be firm but make sure it is gentle enough for the baby.
If your baby is not responding to patting, rub their upper back using your palm in circular motions.
If you wish to wake the baby up, then slightly bounce them with your arms, which will not only wake them up but might also force the air bubble to come out.
2. Hip
The hip method is an excellent option for mothers who prefer breastfeeding their little ones while lying down. This method will also help keep the baby asleep because they are not completely upright.
Place the baby’s tummy gently over their hips. Ensure that the head of the baby remains elevated over its entire body.
In this position, gently pat the baby’s back using your palm.
You could also rub it in an upward circular motion if patting does not help.
3. Chest
If your baby wakes up during shoulder burp, then try the chest burping methods instead. This might help them feel more comfortable and may allow them to sleep longer after mealtime.
Lift the baby gently to the chest, placing one hand under their bottom and one hand on their back.
Allow their body to stay in a curled-up position instead of letting their legs stretch out. This position is more likely to help them stay asleep.
Rub the back of your baby by using the hand that is on their backside and make circular motions.
Rubbing might not always work and in that case, try using gentle pats on their backs.
4. Lap
If you are sitting on the couch or a chair, then the lap might be the most effective method to make your baby burp while sleeping. This does not require your baby to stay upright, allowing them to feel more comfortable while sleeping.
When in the sitting position, gently turn their body over onto their tummy and allow them to rest on your thighs,
Place an arm under their chin and chest to raise their upper body a little to ensure they are comfortable.
Your other hand can burp the baby by patting or rubbing its back in a firm but gentle way.
Once the baby burps, turn the baby over and let them sleep on their backs.
5. Arm Hold
The arm hold method can be perfect for smaller babies but might not always be practical once they get older.
Place an arm under the baby’s back and rest their body on your forearm. This position might be perfect for your baby to feed as well.
Now, carefully turn their body and allow them to rest on their belly on your forearm. Ensure that their head is placed in the crook of the elbow. Place your hand between their legs and make sure you and your baby are stable and comfortable.
Pat, your baby, ’s back or rub their back in circular motions gently using your other hand.
Once you are done, you can gently roll the baby towards your body, and they can lie on your arms face up to continue sleeping or feeding.
How Long Does Burping Take
Usually, burping only take less than two minutes so that you can burp a sleeping baby fast. Sometimes, babies might burp right after your move them into an upright position, but sometimes, you might have to wait for a few minutes and help them externally through gentle tummy pressure or pats. Another helpful way for your baby to get into the zone is to get them to sleep in their crib instead of letting them fall asleep while feeding. When you are feeding them, and you notice them falling asleep, you should stop feeding, give them a minute to burp, and then put them down to sleep. The quicker you start this habit, the easier it will be for you later on. If your little one feels uncomfortable and stiff more often and takes a lot of time to burp, then talk to your doctor about it, and they can provide you with ideas on how to help your babies relieve gas. Babies with bad acid reflux might need to stay upright for a long time, even as long as 30 minutes after eating, to make them burp.
What if Your Baby Doesn’t Burp
Your baby doesn’t need to burp after or during all of their feeding sessions. One reason for this could be because they did not swallow a lot of air while feeding. But this could also mean that you will have to try harder to get them to burp. In such cases, you might need to try other methods to get them to burp. One way to do it is to get them to burp while they are feeding. Usually, babies are often drowsier and would have swallowed more air when they are done feeding. To avoid letting them fall asleep with a lot of air inside them, try burping them when they are halfway done through their feeding session.
If you have tried for 5 minutes or more to get them to burp and it still has not worked, gently lie them down on their back, either on a comfortable surface or in their crib, for a while. Please pick them up again after a few minutes and try burping them, and this might work since lying down for a while would help give the air bubbles some time to move around, making it easier for it to come out.
Keeping the little one upright right after their feed is also an excellent way to let the air bubble escape without the help of a caretaker or a parent. You can do this by using a baby sling or a baby wrap. Even if the baby does not burp, there is no need to stress since sometimes, the baby might not burp since there is no air to release.
Even if you have tried all of those methods and it still does not work, there is no need to worry at all; you could even try gripe water or gas drops from pharmacies to make your baby work but always talk to a doctor about it before you start any of them. If you are worried about your baby’s gas situation, the best thing to do is talk to a doctor about it, and they will suggest methods that are safe for your baby.
Though there are a few methods to burp baby when asleep, remember that each baby is different, and you might need to try various techniques to find a method that works for your baby the best. Once you find that method, it will be easy to ensure your baby burps after every feeding session.

How we mothers transform into Maa Durga when our child gets sick !
This is something that happened during last Navratri. The festival ,wherein Goddess Durga fights many demons and emerges victorious. In short, this battle is about victory of Good over Evil.
We ladies are always bestowed upon titles like Mahalaxmi, Saraswati, Durga, Kali ka roop and more. But, sometimes certain circumstances in your life make you believe that we women are actually, capable of turning ourselves into any particular Devi as per the need of the hour.
And this comes from the recent incident that made me write and share this with all you moms out there who face similar situations like me. My 3 year old daughter has not been keeping well ever since the first day of Navratri, ( the reason I'm mentioning Navratri here is because my little one is a Garba fan just like her mommy) and she hates sitting idle inside the house, not being able to play and just listen to the music being played out in the society premises. And you can imagine how badly I hated it, to see her like that, just coughing continuously, with those tiny watery eyes and nose. As a mom, I understood the fact that giving medicines to children repeatedly that too for cold and cough would do more harm than good to her.
So this was the time, when I readied myself for a battle against these illness causing bugs. I loaded myself with my home made destructive weapons to be used as a cure for her sickness. I made sure I gave her all the comfort she needed along with the magical benefits of honey, turmeric, warm ajwain chest rubs, steam and strictly no cough syrup. All this while, when she was not well, I also noticed some more super powers that I developed. You know how hard it is when kids are sick, and all they want at that time is your warmth and they want to be held by us all the time. And this would make it difficult to do any other household chore. But then, I noticed how efficiently I managed to cook, clean, wash, eat, feed, buy groceries, take my home tuitions, also sometimes pee with a toddler in one hand. I even noticed that on regular days I would take an hour to prepare the lunch, whereas when my child was sick, the lunch gets ready in half and hour, that too with end number of visits to keep her calm. One more interesting thing I've come across is, I hardly notice any change on the weighing scale even after following strict diets and exercise, but whenever my child falls sick we both lose weight simultaneously.. Hahaa !!
So cheers to all the lovely mommies who play the role of Maa Durga throughout the year to teach those Asuras ( bugs that make our children ill ) a lesson and keep them at bay. Happy parenting to ALL.... !!!!!!! Read more

Let's Read Together - Building Habit of Reading Among Children
Kids are the most innocent creatures on this earth. Every parent wants to give their children the best start in life. And the early ages of a child is a sensitive period to start anything. I am the mother of a 1-year-old boy and being a mother, I am always worried about my son getting addicted to electronic devices (the phone or television). Technology can always be a part of life but too much of anything can be dangerous.
This is actually the best time to build good habits in your children rather than letting them watch TV or use phones. They can develop many good habits like brushing their teeth, sleeping early and the habit of reading. According to a survey, a reading habit is considered to be the healthiest one. It is never too late to start with; even paediatricians are recommending that parents start reading to their newborn child. So if you are looking for some tips to foster reading habits in your child, here are some:
Infants enjoy hearing their parents' voices; they find it very soothing and are likely to remember and relate more to their voices. So, new mothers, you can start from day one and then make it a daily routine. Your children will enjoy reading books when they grow up.
They asked a mother: “How did you persuade your child to read instead of playing with devices?" She replied: “Children don’t hear us, they imitate us.” Yes, when children see their mommy and daddy sitting and reading, they will also sit with them and read. So let your kids see your enthusiasm for reading.
It is good to make a reading space for your children. It is not necessary to have a big one; it can be a small corner or any comfy spot with good lighting.
Always explore the genres of books available in the market or online. Remember to choose books which are age-appropriate, so that kids will not lose their interest. For infants, start with picture books, as they have brightly coloured pictures and pop-up images which attract babies. For toddlers (1 to 3 years), picture books with fewer letters can be used. For pre-schoolers (3 to 5 years), stories and interactive books can help them to understand more and make reading fun.
Find reading moments in your daily life. Reading does not only mean to sit in one place and read; reading moments can be found anywhere; from reading road signs or groceries list.
There are always different ways to build good habits. I am going to follow these tips to build reading habits in my child. Are you?
