FAQs
Here are some frequently asked questions related to baby creams and lotions:
1. Why Do Babies Need Lotions or Creams?
Babies have soft and delicate skin which loses moisture after giving them a bath. They tend to lose five times more moisture than we do. Having such dry skin can cause rashes or irritation. Using creams or lotions can help rectify this problem and provide extra moisture to their skin.
2. What is the Difference Between Baby Cream and Baby Lotions?
Lotions have a thinner consistency than creams. The consistency of creams tends to be on the thicker side. Lotions work well on those who have oily or normal skin since they provide basic moisturisation. Creams, on the other hand, provide a deeper level of moisturisation and are good for those with really dry skin.
3. When Can I Start Using Baby Lotion and Cream for My Newborn?
Babies with normal skin do not require lotions or creams for a while, those with dry skin can benefit from it. You can start using lotions by around two months of age if your baby needs it.
4. What Ingredients to Look For in Skincare Products for Babies?
When buying a baby skin care products, look for ingredients such as aloe vera, coconut oil, Olive oil, glyceryl stearate, shea butter, cocoa butter, glycerine and other gentle ingredients. Avoid products containing parabens and other harsh chemicals like sulphates as they strip the skin of moisture.
5. Scented or Unscented Baby Lotion - Which One Should I Choose?
When it comes to baby skin care, it is best to opt for unscented varieties or those that use natural fragrances as these are gentler on the skin. Fragrances often cause allergic reactions or irritations in sensitive skin.
6. Can I Use Moisturising Lotion on My Baby’s Face?
While lotions and creams are not harmful to baby skin, it is not completely necessary for you to moisturise unless they are suffering from very dry skin. If you decide you want to, the best moisturising lotion to use on your baby’s face is one without fragrance.
While you really do not need to jump right into moisturising your baby soon after birth, many parents are uncomfortable with the sight of their baby’s peeling skin. However, this is a normal process as babies need to shed the Vernix layer of the skin that protected them in the womb. With these great options for you, you are sure to find something that suits your baby’s skin needs.

Bronchitis in Pregnancy
Pregnancy can make you more susceptible to common illness as your immunity is changing. Not only will you find that you catch a cold or flu faster than usual, but these illnesses may even last longer than they would before. So, in case you feel like you have come down with a bad case of a cough or a sore throat, you may want to consult your doctor as it may be a case of bronchitis.
What is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is characterised by an inflammation of the airways or the lower respiratory tract, which can make it difficult for you to breathe. Also, a viral infection in the mucous membrane can cause you to develop extra mucous which makes it harder for the bronchi to purify themselves.
Bronchitis may be of two main kinds – acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis is common among pregnant women and is caused by viruses. Thi kind of infection can be treated easily. Chronic bronchitis lasts from several months to several years and causes damage to the lungs as the infection keeps coming back.
Causes of Bronchitis during Pregnancy
Some of the common causes of bronchitis are:
1. Virus and Bacteria
Almost 90% of the cases of bronchitis are due to viruses. It is caused by the same viruses that spread flu and cold: rhinoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, etc. It can also be caused by bacteria. Mucous that builds up due to flu or cold can also cause bronchitis.
2. Irritants
Common breathing irritants like smoke from cigarettes, dust particles, chemical fumes, etc can trigger bronchitis. They can also make the inflammation worse which can cause chronic bronchitis which is harmful to the baby and cause respiratory tract conditions and congenital effects in the baby.
3. Prolonged Exposure to Certain Substances
Long exposure to dust, grain, ammonia, strong acids, chlorine, and others can also be the cause of bronchitis.
Signs and Symptoms
The symptoms of bronchitis in pregnant women may be slightly more than in others. Some of the commonplace signs are:
Cough
Difficulty in breathing or a feeling of choking in the throat
A low fever or a steady rise in temperature
Sore throat
Weakness in the body, fatigue, and body ache.
Chest pains
Lack of appetite
Shortness of breath
You may also produce mucous which can be yellow, grey or even clear-coloured.
Diagnosing Bronchitis While Pregnant
The first diagnosis is usually carried out in the form of a physical exam where after noting the symptoms, the larynx is examined for redness and the ribs are examined to detect any swelling. The doctor will also use a stethoscope to listen to the heartbeat.
Although chest X-rays are done to determine the extent of the infection, it may be avoided in pregnant women due to prevent the risk of radiation to the foetus. Sputum (the mucous that is coughed up from the lungs) tests are done to determine if the condition can be relieved using antibiotics. It can also be tested for any allergies.
A different test is conducted to rule out other diseases like pneumonia and tuberculosis that show similar symptoms. Pulmonary function tests in which you have to blow into a device called spirometer can be conducted to check the amount of air that the lungs can hold.
An accurate diagnosis is generally obtained from blood tests which detect signs of inflammation and measures the haemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Ht) levels.
Risks
While it is unlikely that you will develop any serious complications due to bronchitis, there are a few risks that you need to be mindful of.
1. Difficulty in Breathing
Due to the inflammation of the bronchial walls, your lungs may take in a lower amount of oxygen, which in turn may hamper the level of optimal oxygen that is required by the foetus.
2. Medications That Interfere With Baby’s Growth
Certain antibiotics and drugs may interfere with the development of the baby. Hence, doctors usually recommend alternative remedies and rest and only administer medications when all other methods have failed.
3. Pneumonia
Fever is a symptom of bronchitis. Sometimes, this temperature may increase and you may develop pneumonia putting your baby at risk.
Treatment
Bronchitis caused due to bacterial infection are treated with an antibiotic prescription. However, it is important to exercise caution over the choice of the antibiotic as many of them are considered to be harmful to the foetus.
Some of the antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy are amoxicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, penicillin, ampicillin, and nitrofurantoin.
Antibiotics like sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and trimethoprim can cause harm to the baby. Also, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are known to be responsible for birth defects in the baby.
However, if your bronchitis has stemmed from a virus, you will not need antibiotics as they are ineffective against viruses. This kind of infection will get better on its own. However, if the symptoms persist, you may be diagnosed with a bacterial infection and administered with antibiotics.
Trimester-Wise Treatment
Timely treatment when the symptoms are first noticed can help prevent bronchitis from further affecting the mother and the baby. Treatments for pregnant women can also be dependent on the trimester they are in.
During the first trimester, a Bioparox drug will be prescribed to reduce inflammation by targeting the infection. In the first trimester, you will usually be given an antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin group.
During the second-trimester cephalosporin antibiotics which are safe for the baby are prescribed. Expectorants like bromhexine, halixol, ambroxol and mukaltin, which help clear the mucous are prescribed for a cough.
During the third trimester, if there is an intrauterine infection, an intravenous immunoglobin therapy is done. Based on the severity and the nature of the condition, treatment for preterm labour or possible miscarriage may also be done.
Home Remedies
As soon as you feel the onset of bronchitis, you may want to begin a few home remedies to relieve the condition without having the need to take medications. Some of the best home remedies for acute bronchitis while pregnant are:
1. Gargling With Salt Water
Stir one teaspoon of salt in about 250 ml of water and gargle with the same. This can relieve you of a sore throat and help you get rid of mucous.

4. Lemon-Honey Mixture

This, when repeated several times a day, can help relieve difficulty in breathing.
7. Yogurt
Yogurt has healthy bacteria also known as probiotics which can help alleviate respiratory tract infections.
Prevention
Proper precautions during pregnancy can minimize the possibility of contracting bronchitis if not prevent them altogether. Here are a few preventive measures that you can keep in mind.
Stay away from people suffering from bronchitis. Use a mask around anyone who is suffering from a cold or flu to avoid germs.
Wash your hands frequently to reduce the risk of viral infections.

Egg for Diabetes - Are They Safe to Consume?
Rich in protein, low on carbohydrate, think no further. The answer is simple, an egg. Be it a sunny side up, a French omelette, or just a regular hard-boiled egg, it is nutritious and can make doctors run far away. But is it right for diabetic patients? Well, there is no direct egg and diabetes link. It can boost the body in myriad ways. Right from delivering vitamins, to weight loss programmes, an egg can be an unavoidable food in the diet chart of a person with diabetes.
Should Diabetic Patients Consume Egg?
The concern regarding diabetic people consuming egg always banked on the cholesterol and fat content of an egg. But cholesterol does not spike diabetes level. It can trigger cardiovascular diseases, and people with diabetes should avoid that. If consumed in a limited amount, it should not be of trouble and should not put a crease on the forehead. Is egg good for diabetes then? Yes, that is what experts think.
Benefits of Egg for People with Diabetes
So, it comes down to the battle of two, advantages of eggs and diabetes. While considering, is it only fat and cholesterol to think about? Is egg for diabetes a risk? It surely is food for thought. But we hardly know all about an egg. Let’s dig a bit deeper.
1. High on Protein
Eggs are high on protein. Foods rich protein slows down digestion and glucose absorption. In the process, protein keeps hunger at bay. Hence, the chance is diabetic patient would consume less. That is why experts often suggest to include lean protein in diet chart that could check the eat-whenever-you-can and all-you-can type habit. Egg’s lean protein can make diabetics go lean.
2. Lowers The Chance of Blood Sugar
And what about carbohydrate? In the egg, not much, negligible. An ideal breakfast food, the egg is a protein-rich, carbohydrate-free diet that is good for curbing blood pressure.
3. Packs Punch with Vitamin
Rich with 13 essential vitamins and minerals, the egg is undoubtedly a good source of nutrients. The yolk contains biotin which is good for hair, skin and nails. As a plus, it plays a pivotal role in insulin development. Egg for diabetes type- 2 is an excellent remedy as it contains fat-soluble vitamin D which lessens the risk of the disease.
4. High on Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Surprised, right? What’s even better, eggs produced from chicken (not the broiler ones) are rich in omega-3 fatty acid, a prize for the diabetic people.
5. Fat Fact
A study, published in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health claimed that an egg contains about 5 gm fat and it is mostly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. So if a diabetic patient consumes just one, then the fat amount is really negligible. But avoid eating that egg with loads of cheese and butter, which are a good source of trans fat.
Side Effects of Eating Eggs for Diabetic Patients
Not much can be associated. But too much of anything can have adverse effects on the body.
An egg is high on cholesterol. Especially, egg yolks. One single egg contains almost 200 mg cholesterol, which used to make people think that it is not good for people with diabetes. How much the cholesterol in egg affects cholesterol level in the body is debatable. The American dietary chart allows 300 mg of cholesterol per day. So, a single egg every day can safely be consumed.
A person with prior heart disease or family history should also avoid eating too many. As coupled with diabetes, egg cholesterol can take a toll on the body.
Too much protein can lead to a kidney problem. Eggs are high on protein. Hence, diabetic patients should keep that in mind while planning a dietary chart.
Proper Ways to Consume Eggs for Diabetic Patients
It is always advisable to have properly boiled or cooked eggs. Be it sunny side up or a delicious omelette, eggs can be served in more than one ways to diabetic patients.
Experts suggest that 2-4 per week is ideal for a diabetic patient with a cholesterol problem or any other prior heart-related issues.
If the patient has diabetes and is not getting troubled by any other disease, then 1 per day is always welcome. People who prefer to have just the egg white can even lessen the cholesterol intake by a considerable margin.
If the eggs are from an organic and pastured hen, then the chances of benefiting from such eggs are higher.
Egg salad for diabetes is also good. If you are cooking it for yourself or your dear ones, then load the egg dish with lots of leafy vegetables, onions and mushrooms to make it healthier.
Egg whites for diabetes can be a good option. It can make a fluffy omelette, just avoid pancake batters in them.
If you want to cut down further fat intake, cook the egg in olive oil. You can have it scrambled, or anyway, you like it. And you can always avoid butter or cheese to prepare delectables with egg.
A poached egg is a nice option as that can be done using water as well. No oil, so no trans fat. A pinch of salt would not harm.
So, what’s keeping you away? Just get your recipe ready and get charged up on protein.

Dementia in Children – Causes, Signs and Treatment
In this ArticleWhat is Dementia? What Causes Dementia in Kids? What are the Symptoms of Childhood Dementia? How to Treat Pediatric Dementia? Can You Prevent Dementia in Children?
Does your child seem very irritable or uncooperative these days? Does he/she appear to not pay attention in classes or just slip into a daze every time someone speaks? Does your child have difficulty answering simple questions or picking up easy skills.
If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are, you may be seeing the stages of dementia regression to childhood.
Although Dementia is a cognitive condition that is often associated with adults, it can affect children too. On the outside, the children may appear healthy, but mentally, they won’t be functioning optimally.
What is Dementia?
According to the medical definition, Dementia is a mental condition which is noted by memory loss and impaired cognitive functioning, to the point where it affects daily life. As it progress, mental faculties decline in the person, causing difficulties in thinking, recognising, and speaking too.
What Causes Dementia in Kids?
There are several reasons behind dementia in kids. Some of the most common ones are:
1. Heavy Metal Poisoning
Heavy metal poisoning from lead and toxic substances can cause dementia in kids. These can be found in food sources too so care must be exercised.
2. Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism translates to having an underactive thyroid gland which is unable to product thyroxine hormones in kids. There are acquired hypothyroidism and congenital hypothyroidism which develop during the infancy stage.
3. Encephalitis
It’s inflammation of the brain due to a viral infection
4. Batten Disease
A type of inherited medical disorder that’s due to a defective gene. Symptom show between the ages of 5 and 10 for this.
5. Niemann-Pick Disease
A neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive dementia in kids.
6. Lafora Body Disease
An inherited neurodegenerative disorder that involves epileptic seizures in kids, which get worse with time.
7. Injuries to the Brain
Any physical injuries to the brain, trauma, or impaired cognitive development due to injuries received can result in childhood dementia
8. Infections
Viral infections and other types of transmittable or inherited infections may trigger Dementia in kids.
What are the Symptoms of Childhood Dementia?
Most of the symptoms of childhood dementia are very similar to the ones that appear in adults. The problem is, some of the symptoms mirror symptoms which show up in other disorders too. Your physician will run an exam on your child to make sure if it’s dementia and not something else.
Some of the symptoms of childhood dementia are:
1. Loss of Memory – This includes forgetting newly learned concepts, not being able to remember names and faces, and even forgetting how to speak
2. Inability to Think Clearly or Reason Correctly – Your child may have difficulty organizing thoughts in their head or be unable to express themselves clearly.
3. Inability to Learn Simple Skills or Perform Easy Tasks – From being able to eat finger foods having difficulty with hand-eye coordination etc.
4. Forgetting Old Skills and Failing Intellectually – If your child was good at something and suddenly forgot how to do that, it’s a red flag.
5. Stark Changes in Behaviour, Language, and Emotional States – From mood swings, angry screams, crying for no reason, etc.
6. Anxiety, Fear, or Nervous Attitude for No Reason
7. General Clumsiness (More Frequently) – Falling or tripping often, bumping without seeing you, etc.
8. Not able to Navigate to New Places, Getting Lost Easily, and Forgetting about Previously Visited Locations
9. No Personal Hygiene or Lack of Thereof
10. Deterioration in Fine and Gross Motor Skills, Impulsiveness, and Loss of Visual Acuity – Your child’s muscle tone might deteriorate in their arms and legs, they may lose their vision or be unable to see, and in extreme cases, have poor hand-eye coordination too.
How to Treat Pediatric Dementia?
Unfortunately, there are no specific treatment protocols available for progressive dementia. But there are a few things you could do to make life better for your child:
1. Make your Child Understand
Make your child understand what he/she is going through. Talk softly, be supportive, and give them time/patience for their condition to sink in. Explaining dementia to a child may be the hardest thing to do as a parent, so get help from other family members if you can.
2. Take them to a Doctor
A doctor can correctly diagnose your kids and see if they truly have dementia or if it is something else.
3. Improve Diet/Nutrition
If your child is eating too many processed foods, sugary substances, or salts, it’s time you clean up their diet. Granted, you can’t completely reverse dementia but changing one’s diet does make a huge difference in cognitive functioning and performance
4. Don’t Delay the Diagnosis
If your child exhibits any of the signs and symptoms of Dementia or you suspect something is wrong with them, don’t hesitate to visit a doctor for a diagnosis. A delayed diagnosis could even turn into death when left ignored, in extreme cases.
5. Encourage Exercise
Don’t let your child be sedentary and make sure to clock in at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day
6. Play Games
Games that stimulate the mind like chess, sudoku, and puzzles can help your child understand and learn about reasoning. If your child has difficulty grasping concepts in school, talk to the teacher or see if you can enroll them in special education classes.
Can You Prevent Dementia in Children?
According to research, the best way to prevent dementia in children is to begin by monitoring their nutrition. A Mediterranean diet, no added sugars and salts, plenty of physical exercise, and learning every day are proven ways to prevent dementia or at least slow down its progression. Lifestyle and environmental factors play a huge role.
Finding out your child has dementia can be a heartbreaking experience for any parent. If dementia hasn’t progressed and it’s in its early stages, then there may still be hope for treatment and prevention. However, if it has already progressed, then you have to see your options and learn more about what you can do with your doctor.

A. If it was just a few seconds and it is not going to make a difference yet if you want to be more sure about it if it is more for you then you can get an ultrasound done with your doctor but as far as I know few seconds are not going to make any difference but still you can check with the doctor
