Best Standing & Sitting Positions During Pregnancy
Pregnant women can often be heard complaining about pain in their back, neck and shoulders. This body pain is usually experienced because of drastic changes in one's posture during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, simple tasks, such as standing and sitting can prove to be difficult for you because of weight gain. But contrary to popular belief, it’s not difficult to find a good standing and sitting position during pregnancy.
Importance of Good Posture During Pregnancy
Good posture is when your body aligns properly while sitting, standing, or lying down. Simply put, it is the habit of standing and sitting up straight. A good posture is essential for good health. But its importance increases manifold during pregnancy. A wrong posture may not only lead to aches and discomfort but may also cause harm to the baby or lead to injuries. In the final stages of pregnancy, this pain can deepen as hormones start softening the ligaments and tendons in the joints. During this time, one is more prone to overstretching or straining themselves while performing normal day-to-day jobs. A poor posture during pregnancy may cause complications and irritated joints even after the delivery. It may adversely affect bodily functions like digestion and breathing as well. Therefore, it is essential to maintain a good posture throughout the pregnancy to ease the tension in your back, shoulders, neck and hips. But a good posture will aid the baby to establish himself into the proper birthing position.
Right Sitting Positions
It is important to adopt the right sitting positions during pregnancy to ease discomfort and reduce the stress on the spine. These simple tips may show how to sit during pregnancy:
While sitting, your back should be straight and your shoulders pulled back and rolled down. The buttocks should touch the chair’s back.
Place your feet evenly on the floor. The knees and hips should be set at 90 degrees. The pelvis should be aligned by slightly leaning it forward. The ears should be directly in-line with the shoulders, which should be in-line with the hips.
Select a hard, straight-backed chair to sit on. A soft pillow or a small rolled-up towel may be placed behind the lower back (at the curve of the back) for additional support.
Keep a footstool to elevate the feet. This further eases the strain on the lower back. If you don’t have a footstool, make sure you sit on a chair that is low enough for you to put both your feet evenly on the floor.
If sitting for long, you can do simple foot exercises to increase circulation and to avoid cramps.
Whenever standing up from a sitting position, slide to the edge of the chair and raise yourself by straightening your legs. One must resist the temptation of bending forward at the waist.
If you are required to sit for long hours at your workplace, remember to get up and walk around for a few minutes at regular intervals.
At the workplace while sitting at your desk, adjust your chair height so that you are levelled with the table. Sit close to your desk so that you can rest your arms and elbows on the table or chair. This will help relax your shoulders.
Another good sitting position can be to sit at the edge of the chair and slouch fully. Then raise yourself up and heighten the curve of your back as much as you can. Hold on for a few seconds. Slightly relax the position (about 10 degrees). Make sure to evenly distribute the weight of your body on both hips.
Using a balance ball as a sitting position during the third trimester of pregnancy may be beneficial. But make sure to buy one which is right for your height. It may aid in preparing your pelvis for labour and even help in the right positioning of the baby.
When you sit on the floor, you can sit in cobbler's pose. Sit straight up with your knees bent and your heels joined together.
Sitting Postures to Avoid While Pregnant
Paying special attention to your postures during pregnancy is important. Here are some of the sitting postures that should be avoided during pregnancy:
Refrain from crossing your legs while sitting. It may cause bad circulation, swelling of the ankles, or varicose veins.
Whenever you need to turn, avoid twisting at the waist. Instead, it is advisable to turn your entire body. Also, refrain from bending forward. This may put abnormal pressure on the abdomen.
Avoid sitting for long or in the same position. Sit only for a short span of time (10 to 15 minutes) and remember to adjust and change positions regularly.
It is best to avoid slouching even though it may feel comfortable.
Avoid sitting with your legs hanging. This can lead to swelling with increased blood flow to the legs.
During pregnancy, avoid sitting on a stool or a chair without a backrest. This can place an unnecessary strain on your back.
Proper Standing Postures
Maintaining proper standing postures are as crucial as sitting positions. The following things should be kept in mind for standing while pregnant.
Your head should be held up straight; it should not be tilted.
It is advisable to keep the chest forward and shoulder blades pulled back.
The earlobes should be aligned with the middle of your shoulders.
Avoid locking the knees by keeping them straight.
Refrain from tilting the pelvis forward or backwards. It is advisable to keep the buttocks tucked in, and stomach muscles pulled in when able.
Your feet should be positioned in the same direction and evenly balance the weight on both feet. Low heel shoes (not flat shoes) may be worn to support the foot arches.
It is recommended not to stand for a long duration of time.
How to Stand Up From the Lying Position
If you want to stand up from the lying position, turn on to one side on the bed, draw up your knees close, and move your legs to the bed's side. Try to sit up by pushing yourself up with your hands. Do not bend while trying to stand.
It is important to find out and maintain proper standing and sitting positions throughout the pregnancy to minimise pain and discomfort. This will make your pregnancy journey a bit easier and comfortable!

Baby Sleeps with Eyes Open - Is It Worrisome?
Sleep is incredibly important for babies, especially for newborns. Newborns sleep at least sixteen to seventeen hours every day. And as they grow older, they tend to sleep less, with one-year-olds' getting approximately eleven to twelve hours a day. A baby's sleeping pattern and feeding habits are not exactly the most consistent. As a new mother, learning how to readjust your own patterns to fit your baby’s needs will be essential (and hard). To get your baby to sleep peacefully will be a task in itself, but you might encounter unexpected behaviour at times such as sleeping with the eyes fully or partially open.
Reasons Why a Baby Sleeps With His Eyes Open
Babies sleeping without their eyes fully closed is a somewhat common occurrence. If your baby also sleeps with his eyes open, it could be because of the following reasons.
1. Genetics
If your baby sleeps with eyes open, it could be hereditary. You can look into your and your spouse’s family history to ascertain if anyone else sleeps with their eyes open. If you, your spouse, or immediate family members shares this trait, it is very likely your baby will too.
2. Medical Reason
If nobody in your family has a history of sleeping with eyes open, it could be due to medical conditions, such as nocturnal lagophthalmos. It is quite harmless and does not continue for more than a year to a year and a half. In rare cases, it might be because of thyroid problems, damaged facial nerves or even some tumours. If you find that your baby is unable to sleep with their eyes closed for extended periods of time, please consult your doctor.
Is Sleeping With Eyes Open Harmful for a Baby?
Sleeping with eyes open might look odd and worrisome, but it is completely normal and harmless. In fact, your child’s paediatrician will even tell you that they see this condition regularly and it does not concern them at all. Research suggests that this mode of sleeping is during the active phase of the sleep cycle, known as Rapid Eye Movement or REM. Newborn sleep consists of long periods of REM than adults, making up over half of their entire sleep time. As they grow older, their sleeping patterns become more like adults, meaning they wake up less during the night and are less fussy during nap time.
What Can You Do About It?
While there is no need to concern if your baby sleeps with his eyes open, many new mothers wonder how to make their babies sleep with eyes closed. There are a few ways by which you can help your baby stop this habit:
Gently close your baby’s eyelids with your fingertips until they are closed. Make sure they are in deep sleep while doing this.
Establish a strict feeding/sleeping cycle so that he gets used to a routine and learns to sleep without breaks or interruptions.
If your baby has difficulty sleeping, you can help them relax by bathing them in warm water, singing to them or gently rocking them till they fall asleep.
Allow your baby to rest on his back while sleeping, as this promotes sufficient air circulation around him. Remove any extra objects from his sleeping area such as stuffed toys, quilts, pillows and so on.
Make sure the temperature of his room is warm and the room is dark when you put him to sleep. This will he won't be disturbed in case his eyes cannot close completely.
When to Worry
As already mentioned, it is normal for babies to sleep with their eyes open until they turn a year and a half. However, if your baby continues this habit after he crosses eighteen months, you should talk to your doctor about it. There is a very small likelihood that your baby may have congenital ptosis, which causes malformed eyelids. This cannot be self-diagnosed and requires professional medical attention.
Even though it looks strange or abnormal, you can rest assured that your baby is sleeping quite soundly even if his eyes are open. Follow the tips mentioned above to help him discard this habit over time. However, if you're worried for any reason, please talk to your doctor or health professional about it. Once your doctor assures you there is nothing to concern, then you don't need to worry!

How to Make Yourself Happy - Tips to Sense Joy and Well-Being in the Present Moment
Happiness is one of the most underrated things in life. Many people tend to forego sustainable happiness for a lot of reasons, ranging from other pleasures to even money matters. However, the fact remains that happiness is one of the most important things in life because it can impact your well-being.
How can you be happy? Some simple ways to be happy are mentioned below
Simple Ways to Make Yourself Happy
Here are some answers as to how to make yourself happy when you alone, and some also deal with making yourself happy in a relationship.
1. One Nice Thing
Many people commit to doing a nice thing every day – while this is great, it is important to doing something nice for yourself too. No matter how big or small, a nice thing is a nice thing – you will feel happier after you do it. Do not think about whether you deserve it or not – just do it anyway, for yourself.
2. Listen to Yourself
Observe how you talk to yourself – this may not necessarily be out loud, but can also be an internal voice too. Do not be harsh when you criticize yourself and learn to talk about yourself in a more loving tone since this can have an impact on your happiness too.
3. Forgiveness
Everyone makes mistakes – it is part of human nature. If you hold yourself to a high sense of accountability, great; however, that does not mean that you do not make mistakes too. You should learn to forgive yourself in order to move on in life, and become happier with yourself.
4. Accept Yourself
Understand that you are not some sort of Superwoman, even though you may be trying to be. Everyone around you is flawed, including yourself. Avoid beating yourself up too much without understanding those facts. Understand that you are free to make your own path, and are not accountable to anything else, like a career path or money. Embracing yourself is one of the biggest steps to ensuring long-lasting happiness.
5. Eliminate Toxicity
You do not have to be around anyone who is toxic, according to you. Be it clients, business partners, investors, employees or even friends, minimise interactions with those you think have a negative impact on your life. You do not have to put up with unkind people in your life.
6. Your Health
Your physical health impacts your mental well-being too. Therefore, you need to prioritise your health in many ways in order to be happy in a sustainable manner. However, ensure that you can take the occasional cheat days too if you follow a strict diet or the likes.
7. Meal-Skipping
This is one of the largest problems of the current generation. More and more people have started to skip meals because they are busy, and this has a bad impact on the mental and physical health of the person. Just try to eat something, regardless of what it may be – it could be something as simple as a salad, but it can help your body function better.
8. Breathe
Whenever you feel anxious, distressed or upset, remember to take a few deep breaths before you make a decision. This can help you calm yourself down, and help you get your thoughts in order before you have to act. It also improves the happiness quotient of the person in a dramatic fashion.
9. Welcoming Space
Try to do simple things around your house before you are tired, so you do not have to burden yourself when you actually arrive tired and stressed. Simple acts, like making your bed in the morning can be a boost to you when you come back from work all overworked and tired. Take control of your environment, and consequently, become happier.
10. Light It Up!
Many people tend to prefer dark spaces to work in. While this may be okay for short periods, it is important that you expose yourself to sunlight. You are sure to feel the warmth not only on your skin but also on your mind too – these can help you stay happier throughout the day.
11. Pamper Yourself
This does not mean that you have to become a shopaholic, but buying the occasional premium product for yourself can truly make an impact in your mind. Make yourself happy by treating yourself to a present, and take control of your own happiness. Most people tend to spend money on their loved ones, but never on themselves. Understand that you are your own loved one too and that the occasional expensive gift to yourself is not going to matter in the long run.
12. Jumping Jacks
If you are feeling particularly down, try to do some simple aerobic exercise like jumping jacks. These have been found to boost the mood of the person and can help you cope with any stress that you may be feeling. In fact, aerobic exercise has even been found to be an effective treatment for moderate depression.
13. Call a Friend
After all, is said and done, it is a fact that man is a social animal. Everyone needs some sort of interaction with friends and family every day, in order to be happy and healthy. Personal relations are important in a huge manner, and they can have a lasting positive effect on the person too. Say hi to your family, or walk up to a friend and have a personal conversation for some time.
14. Be Grateful
Ideally, you should maintain a journal in which you should write down something which made you thankful for being who you are every day. Acknowledging your good fortune and understanding the results of your labour has been found to be a huge factor in making you happy, and this has been found to be a cornerstone of positive psychology. In fact, having this habit for more than 6 months can drastically improve your mental and physical well being.
15. Imagine
When you are nervous about the outcome of anything before doing it, try and imagine the best case scenario for yourself rather than the worst one. Project your best possible self to yourself, and understand the capabilities you have when you are the best version of yourself. This is a tip which can truly change your life, owing to the results it can have on your health. Even pretending to be an optimist can fool your brain into calming your body down effectively – this can possibly translate to better results in whatever you are planning to do, and helps you control the outcome better.
Being happy is extremely important for any person since it impacts all facets of human life. You should try to be as happy as possible when you can, even when things are not going particularly well. Remember that everyone is flawed, so you do not have to be perfect in this world in order to succeed.

Toys That Are Useful for Babies
I am a mother of a one-year-old boy. For playing with him, I searched for many toys and books and got some special things that help brain development. I haven't brought so many toys for my son. He used to play with his cousin sister's toys. And I realised that this much plastic is a waste. So I thought of buying only useful toys so that we can reduce plastic waste.
These are the toys I brought for him.
The first one is a book It's a set of five books. Animals, vehicles, birds, general knowledge, and nursery rhymes. It's a board book. It will not tear easily. It includes pictures with names. When my baby gets bored, I will teach him each picture, and ask him to tell its name. You should ask your baby every day. Then they will be thorough with it. So it's a book to learn about our surroundings. I recommend everyone to buy this.
The second one is a gardening and beach playset. It's an outdoor play. It includes a sand playset and beach playset. My baby loves to play with that. He will sit calmly and play.
The third one is a colouring book. But it's a reusable water colouring book. A pen is given with it. Fill water in it and colour it in the book. When water sticks on the book, coloured images appear. After playing, dry in the air. Then the colour will disappear. It's useful while travelling. I use this book while my baby is eating anything.
The next one is a splash book with a squeaker. It's a bath toy. But can be used as a normal toy. It helps to keep your baby seated while bathing.
While selecting a toy, try to buy something which is both helpful for playing and developing intelligence. Just try any of these products and share your experience. I think these will be very helpful for moms. I love all these products.

Kitchen Tips and Tricks That Will Make Your Cooking Shorter and Easier
Any person who cooks would know this fact – the amount of time spent prepping for a meal or a dish is much higher than the actual time it takes to prepare the dish. While this is unavoidable in most cases, cooking can be shortened by implementing a few tips and tricks which are sure to come in handy for you. Remember these tricks, so that you can save a lot of time and complete your cooking when you are still hungry.
Kitchen Tips You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner
Here are some amazing kitchen tips and hints for cooking, which can come in handy at some point or other.
1. Soaking
Even though this requires you to plan ahead for half a day, it can be a coup when it is done. Anyone who cooks pasta a lot would know that it takes a lot of time to do so. To reduce the amount of time normally taken to cook it, you should try soaking the pasta before you start cooking it. Soak it in water in a leakproof container for several hours, or even overnight before you make your dish – you will find that the cooking of pasta after that takes only about a minute. You can even directly add sauce to it and consume if you like it like that.
2. Caramelizing Onions
Many dishes require caramelised onions, and the dishes simply do not seem complete without it. To cook caramelised onions quicker, you should add baking soda when it turns slightly brown in a frying pan. Add about 1 tbsp of soda, for every 2 lbs of onions - you will notice that the onions will caramelise at twice the speed, and do not end up burning.
3. Tongs
While spatulas are awesome, especially when the dish requires a lot of scraping and flipping, tongs are best for almost every other dish. Tongs are much more agile and nimble compared to spatulas, and you will notice that the number of things that flip onto the floor while using tongs is far less compared to spatulas.
4. Tupperware
There is a reason why Tupperware is the main feature in most kitchen tips for working moms. They are usually airtight, which means that they can keep almost anything fresher for longer periods, lasting up to a week. Anything, from berries to fresh cut leaves can be stored in these reusable, eco-friendly vessels.
5. Garlic Squashing
Peeling and then pressing garlic takes a ridiculous amount of time, as any chef would know. If you notice, you would see that most chefs use their big knives as a substitute for a garlic press effectively. You can place the garlic onto a cutting board and squash it with the flat side of the nice so that the papery skin comes right off it. After that, it takes only about ten seconds to mince the garlic into little pieces for cooking.
6. Separate Cutting Boards
Nobody likes the taste of onion or garlic with anything they eat. Particularly in India, many people do not even try to eat onions, for personal and religious reasons. Try to have more than one cutting board for your cooking needs. One can be used for garlic and onions, and the other ingredients that go into those dishes – the other for herbs, fruits, cheeses and the likes.
7. Fresh Greens
As much as possible, you should try to procure herbs that are fresh and not stored. They are available almost everywhere and are not expensive in most cases. You can always store them inside your fridge so that they do not turn bad quickly. If you opt for not so fresh herbs, you will soon see that the herbs tend to turn bad quickly even after carefully storing them.
8. Overcooking
Regarding common taste-based mistakes, overcooking is perhaps the most common ones that novice chefs do. Overcooking is worse than undercooking – meat becomes tough and chalky, and vegetables lose their flavour owing to it. You should learn the practice of taking the food off the heat at the right time before they cook too much, and let them cook with the internal temperature they have.
9. The Importance of Salt
Salt is not only required for your health but is also an indispensable part of any meal. If you think that your food is just okay, but you did nothing wrong, it probably needs some flavour in the form of salt. Over-salting is bad, so you should try adding a pinch to check if the food tastes better after that.
10. No refrigerating fruit
With the possible exception of berries, fruits should not be stored inside the fridge – obviously, extremely hot climates are excluded from this rule. Fridges tend to dull and take away the flavour that makes fruits so unique, so you should try to keep them as fresh as possible without using the fridge. Eating them quickly would definitely represent the better option.
11. Grate Butter
Butter is commonly stored in the fridge, so it becomes difficult to grate or break off to be spread over anything you are cooking. In such a situation, most people tend to wait for it to heat up so that they can spread it accordingly. However, the better thing to do in such a situation would be to grate the butter using a common cheese grater. These butter grates can then be added onto anything you make, including biscuits, toast, muffins and the likes. It also makes it easier to manage, too.
12. Broken Shells
Those who user organic eggs for breakfast would find that the shells of the eggs are considerably flimsier compared to the commercial variant. If you notice a piece of the shell fall into the yolk that you have put into a bowl, it would not be ideal to fish it out using your finger. Instead, use one of the egg halves itself to scoop up that eggshell which fell into the bowl.
13. Fresh Eggs
Many times, you may find yourself confused about whether the egg in your fridge can be used for cooking. How can you check without breaking open the egg? There is a way for that, too. You should try placing the egg in a glass of water, and observe if it floats or not. If it stays up from the bottom, it is losing freshness – if it is floating towards the surface of the water, it is probably not suitable for cooking. This is because the eggshells let in the air over time, as their porosity increases – this means that they lose their freshness too.
14. Reheating Pasta
When you are reheating the leftover pasta from the previous day, you will find that it is hard to ensure that the microwave heats it evenly from all sides. More often than not, you will have to open the door midway to stir the pasta to make it heat more evenly. To get it done in one go, the best way to arrange the pasta in the plate in a special manner. When you place the pasta, ensure that there is a small circle empty in the middle of the plate, and sprinkle some water in that area. This will ensure that the pasta gets cooked more evenly, and you will not have to stir it several times to get even heating.
15. Sliding Boards
If you love to cook your dishes quickly, you will have to cut the ingredients quickly too. However, knives and cutting boards are not optimal for each other, as any cooking aficionado would tell you. You may have to reduce the speed of your cutting to adjust or resort yourself to spending a lot of time adjusting the cutting board again and again. However, you can solve this problem by placing a grip under the board for your benefit. By placing a rubber mat or even a wet paper towel under the cutting board, you can concentrate on chopping your ingredients quickly rather than having to readjust the cutting board every single time.
Cooking tips are fantastic since they end up saving a lot of time and also making your food taste better. Implement some of these tips yourself, and feel the improvement!
