Green Discharge During Pregnancy
Green vaginal discharge during pregnancy is a medical condition caused by a bacterial infection. During pregnancy, if the colour of your vaginal discharge changes to green and has an odd unpleasant smell, unlike the usual vaginal discharge, it is a sign of an infection. There are numerous reasons which may induce green discharge during pregnancy which will be discussed below.
What Is Green Discharge?
In the reproductive years of a woman’s life, it is normal to have vaginal discharge which is whitish in colour. However, the colour of the vaginal discharge changes in case of an infection. Green discharge is one of the types of vaginal discharge which is primarily observed during pregnancy. It is caused by a sexually transmitted infection, known as ‘trichomoniasis’. Green mucus discharge during pregnancy is different from regular whitish discharge and is a sign of an infection. Unlike regular discharge, the green discharge has a thicker texture and a strong odour, and it is accompanied by pain or itchiness. It can also be caused by the presence of verdoperoxidase enzyme. Another cause of green discharge could be the presence of vaginal warts. The sexually transmitted disease may cause viral infection in the vagina, which could result in vaginal warts.
Is It Normal to Have Green Vaginal Discharge While Pregnant?
No, having green vaginal discharge during pregnancy is not normal. Of course, pregnant women will have some sort of discharge but most likely it will be thin and milky, and have a mild odour. This discharge is known as leucorrhoea and is normal during pregnancy.
Causes of Green Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy
In most cases, the green vaginal discharge takes place due to the presence of a parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis, sometimes referred to as “trich”. However, there are also other sexually transmitted diseases or causes which can lead to the problem of green discharge. Following are some other causes of green vaginal discharge during pregnancy.
1. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a chronic disease which affects a woman’s reproductive system. It is an extreme consequence of gonorrhoea and chlamydia. It usually takes place when a woman has intercourse with someone infected with gonorrhoea or chlamydia.
2. Bacterial Vaginosis
A type of bacterial inflammation which is caused by the excessive growth of bacteria found in the vagina. This infection may lead to a change in the colour of vaginal discharge and it will have a strong odour.
3. Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a short-term sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis. A woman with this infection will have an abnormal vaginal discharge, which may also have a strong odour.
4. Foreign Objects
Inserting foreign bodies like a tampon or even the shreds of tissue paper in the vagina for an extended period of time can be a cause of green vaginal discharge.
5. Gonorrhoea
This sexually transmitted disease which comes from a bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. A woman may get gonorrhoea from any kind of sexual contact: vaginal intercourse, oral intercourse, or anal intercourse. This venereal disease may lead to frothy discharge.
6. Cervical Infection
Cervical infection is another cause, which may lead up to an abnormal vaginal discharge. It can be identified using appropriate tests.
What Does Green Discharge Indicate?
Having vaginal discharge while pregnant is quite common and is a regular occurrence. It takes place due to a multitude of bodily changes one goes through while pregnant. This is completely healthy and normal. However, it is important to differentiate a normal vaginal discharge from the abnormal ones. Furthermore, if the colour of the vaginal discharge changes from whitish to yellowish green, is thicker than its usual texture, has a strong repulsive odour, and is accompanied by other uncomfortable symptoms such as pain, itching or a burning sensation, then it could be a sign of bacterial infection. Also, if it occurs in excessive amounts, consulting a gynaecologist is recommended. Green discharge might also be an indication of one of the points given below:
1. Urinary Tract Infection
Often, green vaginal discharge is an indication of urinary tract infection. As the uterus grows large during pregnancy, it puts pressure on the ureters, causing urine to gather in the bladder, often resulting in the urinary tract or bladder infection. A burning feeling while urinating is a common symptom of a bladder infection.
2. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Green discharge can also be an outcome of sexually transmitted diseases such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) or trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a medical condition which takes place when the ecosystem of the vagina is disturbed resulting in an abnormal growth of the bacteria found naturally in the vagina. Vulvovaginal candidiasis, also known as yeast infection or thrush, is a result of the presence of yeast-like fungus called candida. VVC can affect a woman at any age but is more susceptible to occur during her pregnancy. Like BV, vulvovaginal candidiasis is also triggered when vagina’s balance is disrupted.
3. Leaking Amniotic Fluid
Amniotic fluid, also known as Cameron’s fluid, serves as a protective liquid to support the growing foetus. Sometimes, during pregnancy this fluid may and cause the vaginal discharge to appear yellowish green in colour.
Treatment
The green discharge caused by a bacterial infection is curable and is only a minor setback. A number of anti-fungal and antibiotic medications such as metronidazole, tinidazole and Cleocin can provide you relief from this problem. These medications also work magic against infection caused by Trichomonas.
What to Do About Green Vaginal Discharge

Keep your genital area clean, especially after using a toilet each time. The right way to clean your genital area is by wiping down there from front to back. instead of the back to front movement. Also, be mindful of changing the pads. The ideal way is to change your pads every four hours, regardless whether your pad is fully soaked or not.
2. Avoid Douching
Medical experts recommend to avoid douching during pregnancy as it disturbs the natural balance of vaginal bacteria, also known as “vaginal flora”. Imbalance of vaginal bacteria makes you susceptible to infection by the growth of harmful bacteria in your body. Vaginal infections or bacterial vaginosis may also ramp up the risk of preterm labour and sexually transmitted infections.
3. Wear Cotton Underpants
Wear underpants which are made of pure cotton fabric. Cotton fabric is known to absorb sweat well and thereby would make it difficult for germs or other bacteria to grow down there.
4. Avoid Taking Bubble Baths
Bubble baths can cause irritation or itchiness in your private parts, which may further lead to vaginal infection. So as a preventive step, avoid taking bubble baths during pregnancy. Also, it is better to use non-scented soaps and body wash, as added chemicals could cause irritation.
When to Consult a Gynaecologist
While it is quite normal to experience vaginal discharge during pregnancy, there are a number of symptoms which may call for immediate medical attention. You should head to a clinic if you notice an increase in your vaginal discharge. Thicker discharge that has a mucus-like texture, gives off an unpleasant fishy odour and may have yellowish green colour. Watch out for these symptoms and consult a doctor immediately. You might experience pain with such discharge while you urinate or have pain during sexual intercourse with your partner. Usually, a bacterial infection can be treated with proper care and with the help of antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor.

Ingredients:
½ cup fresh, cooked or frozen peas (thawed)
1 medium-size onion, thinly sliced
1 tsp butter (unsalted)
1 clove
A pinch of cinnamon
½ cup water
¼ cup milk (you can also use cream or soy milk)
Method:
Heat butter in a pan and saute the sliced onions in it for around 2 minutes. Add the cinnamon and cloves and cook until tender. Take out the clove.
Add the peas and continue cooking while stirring for 3-4 minutes.
Put the mixture in a blender and puree it until it becomes smooth.
Return it to the pan and add water into it (as much as you desire) while stirring, until it becomes the texture of the soup. Better to add less water so that it stays more of a puree.
Bring the mixture to boil, lower the heat and add the cream/milk. Warm the mixture gently and serve to your baby.
2. Baked Sweet Onion Recipe
A good recipe for onions which can be added to other dishes.
Ingredients:
1 onion
1 pinch of black pepper (freshly ground)
1 tsp butter (unsalted)
Method:
Preheat oven to 350 deg F.
Peel the onion and after that, cut the top and bottom parts.
Cut the onion in half, along its width, and place both halves on a baking sheet which is greased. The cut side should be facing up.
Sprinkle pepper on them and put butter on both halves>
Cover with a foil and bake the halves for about an hour until they become fully tender.
When your baby is slightly older, you can try sprinkling some balsamic vinegar on the onion halves to bring out the sweet flavour even more.
3. Onion Rings Recipe
A healthy recipe for babies who can bite and chew properly.
Ingredients:
1 onion (large)
¼ cup yoghurt
¼ cup whole wheat flour
½ cup whole wheat breadcrumbs (dried)
1 tsp oregano (dried)
1 tsp wheat germ
Method
Cut the onion into rings.
Place the flour into a clean bag and add the rings.
Close the bag’s top tightly with both your hands and shake well, until the rings get flour coated.
Put the bag in the freezer and freeze for 20 minutes.
Mix the oregano and wheat germ into the breadcrumbs.
Take out the onions rings from the freezer and then coat each of them in the yoghurt.
Following that, coat each one in the breadcrumbs.
Place the rings on a greased baking sheet and bake at 400 deg F for around 10 minutes. Turn them and then cook for another 10 minutes, until they become golden brown.
Cut the rings into baby bite-sized pieces and serve them.
The best thing about cooking with onions is that their water-soluble nutrients will never go to waste. Try the above recipes and make your little one a fan of onions.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was formed in the year 1991 to execute all the goals outlined in the Innocenti Declaration. WABA is responsible for spreading the awareness and importance of breastfeeding at a global level. Some of the important initiatives of WABA include:
Supporting and encouraging mothers to continue to breastfeed
Baby-friendly hospital initiatives
Guiding and educating the fathers to support the mothers, health care workers, and the community
Framing of laws and policies to protect and support breastfeeding mothers
How to Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) celebrations are meant to unite the breastfeeding community all around the world, enhance public support towards breastfeeding, and achieving the goals of the Innocenti Declaration. In the first year of its celebration, around 70 countries were involved in the celebration of WBW, but today this number has grown to 170 countries! There are many ways to celebrate the WBW; you can do any one or more of the following things.
1. Breastfeed Your Little One
The best way to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week is, of course, by starting to feed and nourish your little one! While we all know a mother is always there to feed her baby irrelevant of any dates or celebrations, if you are in that phase of your life where you're nursing your baby, then you must definitely do so with gusto during this week!
2. Attend Events, Lectures or Walks Sponsored by Various Agencies
Many institutions sponsor walks, seminars, etc. to create awareness during WBW. They provide tees with logos, bracelets, etc., to show their support towards the cause.
3. Go for a Breastfeeding Vacation
Take some time off from your routine life and go on a vacation with your family. Enjoy the bliss of nursing your baby during this time, without being bogged down by the tasks and worries you deal with daily. Take some time to unwind and relax, indulge in yoga, meditation or any activity that rejuvenates your mind, body and soul. And while planning for the vacation, make sure to include 'shop for the perfect bra' in your to-do list, as the right bra can definitely help maintain the health of your breasts, especially during this crucial time.
4. Post Your ‘Brelfie’
A trend started by the World Health Organisation (WHO) encourages moms to share their breastfeeding selfies or 'brelfies' on social media. It was a move to break the stigma regarding breastfeeding in public and also to spread the importance of breastfeeding for the physical and mental development of the child. So when World Breastfeeding Week rolls around, you too can post your brelfie on Instagram with the hashtag #BraveBrelfie to share your experience with WHO.
5. Share Your Breastfeeding Experience
Breastfeeding is a natural phenomenon, and your experience with your baby is something which you must share with nursing mothers or expecting mothers. In spite of so many efforts to spread awareness regarding the importance of mother’s milk, only 50% of the population of babies are being nursed beyond six months of age, and only half of them make it to one year of age. In many underdeveloped countries, mothers are not given any support when it comes to them nursing their babies; there may be issues and problems they're facing that they don't have information about. The more you talk about your experiences, the more you can reach out to such people and help them throughout their journey of motherhood.
6. Say Thanks to a Nursing Mom
Take this as an opportunity to say thanks to a nursing mother or a nursing caretaker whom you know. A small word of appreciation and a smile can create a big difference in the lives of many people. If you are one of them, then just take a moment to appreciate yourself for the wonderful gift you're giving your baby!
Themes of World Breastfeeding Week
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action designs a new theme and slogan to represent the World Breastfeeding Week every year. They are specially designed to focus on a particular aspect of breastfeeding. After finalising the theme, the marketing materials such as brochures, posters, banners, advertisements, and websites are designed by the WABA to spread the topic of the year.
These themes, slogans, and materials can be used by government organisations, breastfeeding communities, hospitals, healthcare institutes, pharmaceuticals and other organisations to host seminars, events, lectures and spread awareness about breastfeeding locally and internationally.
