CT Scan In Pregnancy - Is It Risky?
A CT scan or a CAT scan is the common name for an imaging technique called Computed Axial Tomography scan. It is a procedure that uses a computer to combine several X-ray images to generate a cross-sectional, three-dimensional image of the internal organs of the body. Many women worry about CT scan during pregnancy side effects and their queries will be answered in this post. Beyond that, your doctor would be able to explain to you the risks and benefits of a CT scan if you ever need to have one.
Is It Safe to Perform CAT Scan during Pregnancy?
CAT scans use a focused beam of X-rays to generate imagery of the body and this high energy radiation does have the potential to cause harm to a foetus depending on its intensity and exposure range. Ionizing radiations such as X-rays are known carcinogens and their utilization has been speculated as a potential cause for the increase of cancer in developed countries. When CAT scans are performed during pregnancy, there is also concern about the carcinogenic and teratogenic effects of the ionizing radiation on the growing foetus. The highest risk, however, is for foetuses that are under 15 weeks old and at a radiation threshold greater than 50 mGy.
The risk goes up when the pregnant woman’s uterus comes under the field of scanning or a scan is performed in a region in the abdominal or pelvic cavity. When radiation shields are applied, scans expose the foetus to a dose of 1 mGY to 3.5 mGy or radiation. In contrast, the radiation exposure of foetuses from the background radiation (from the sun and space) is 0.5 to 1 mGy for a period of 9 months. The typical dosage the foetus is exposed to during a routine CAT scan of the abdomen and pelvis is about 25 mGy. CAT scans of the head or chest expose the foetus to almost no radiation. Advanced scanners with automated exposure control bring down the radiation exposure to 13 mGy.
Why Are CT Scans Performed?
Pregnant women can sometimes experience non-obstetrical conditions or emergencies that may require the use of CAT scans, some of these conditions include; renal colic, appendicitis, hemorrhagic ovarian cysts, ovarian torsion, pulmonary embolism and trauma. The utilization of CAT scans in these instances is highly useful for diagnosis and sometimes maybe the only tool that can be used to gain a proper insight into the condition. CT scans form a three-dimensional image of the internal organs where doctors can get a clear picture of the exact cause of the problem.
The primary diagnostic tool for pregnant women is the ultrasound but it cannot always give detailed views of the organs. When the safer modes of scan such as ultrasound and MRI scans cannot give a definitive answer or there is a time constraint, CAT scans are used as the best imaging option. As a rule of thumb, CT scans are not recommended to pregnant women unless the benefits outweigh the risks of exposing the foetus to the radiation.
Risks of Getting a CAT Scan while Pregnant
Here are some of the common concerns about getting a CAT scan done during pregnancy.
A CT scan involves ionizing X-ray radiation that is a little higher than the ambient radiation we receive every day. The radiation dose from CT scans can be about 10 mSv which is about the same radiation the average person receives from the background radiation in 3 years.
CT scan while pregnant first trimester has the highest risk to the developing foetus due to the carcinogenic and teratogenic effects of the ionizing radiation.
An abdominal condition that requires a CAT scan exposes the foetus to high levels of radiation.
Can CAT Scan during Pregnancy Cause Cancer in The Child?
CAT scans use radiation levels that are very low to cause severe damage to the mother or the fetus. Most scans operate within the ranges of 10 to 25 mGy and the exposure needs to be higher to cause cancer. Teratogenic effects are known to occur when the exposure goes over the threshold of 50 mGy to 100 mGY. A single scan is not of concern; multiple scans raise the risk of radiation exposure. If the exposure goes over 100 mGy to 150 mGy, the risk is serious enough to consider an abortion of the fetus.
CAT scans carry with them some risk. Talk to your provider about the risk vs benefits if you ever need to have one.

Dreams during Pregnancy: What They Mean and More
Pregnancy is a time when your body and mind undergo many changes. These changes affect your overall health, mental disposition and emotions in a big way. Your nine-month long journey will be exciting, exhausting and challenging in different ways.
Pregnancy Dreams
When you are pregnant, your body undergoes drastic changes, both physically and mentally. Whether this is your first pregnancy or a subsequent one, there will be many associated emotions with the physical and hormonal changes that affect you. This is also what triggers all your pregnancy dreams. Many women experience and clearly remember weird dreams during pregnancy. Others may wake up with no recollection. It is also possible you wake up and don't remember the dream, but you notice you are feeling anxious, or happy. This could be the emotional imprint of a dream.
Bad dreams in pregnancy are not uncommon. The good news is that this is absolutely normal and is nothing to be overly concerned about.
Why Do You Get Vivid Dreams When Pregnant?
To understand this, we should first try to analyse what happens when we are asleep. Our sleep is divided into various stages, ranging from light sleep to REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, and then deep slumber. Throughout the duration of our sleep, we experience about 4 to 6 sleep-cycles, which include the different sleep stages. Dreams occur during the REM stage of sleep.
Experts suggest that we wake up refreshed if we wake up at the completion of a sleep cycle. However, when pregnant, there are many disturbing factors that make continuous sleep difficult to achieve, and you make wake-up mid-cycle, or between cycles.
Physical conditions like leg cramps, the need to urinate frequently, or being in an uncomfortable position can cause disruptions to the sleep cycle. As a result, you wake up in between a sleep cycle. If you were in REM sleep when you were awakened, your mind will vividly remember the images from your dream at that time. This is why you usually recollect your dreams with more detail when you are pregnant, and it is not that you have never seen similar dreams before.
Is it Normal to Have Disturbing Dreams During Pregnancy?
If you are feeling disconcerted by your dreams, it may help to know that several pregnant women have vivid and disturbing dreams. Tore Nielson, a Canadian expert on the subject, suggests that this is a normal phase of pregnancy. Eccentric dreams are the result of raging hormones, physical exhaustion and an underlying feeling of anxiety about this new role in life.
Also, by virtue of being so anxious all the time, the stress hormone cortisol rises during the night, increasing the chances for odd or unpleasant dreams. The phenomenon is so common, that studies dedicated to the subject even identify typical dream themes that pregnant women experience. The themes usually change over the course of the pregnancy, and can be as intriguing as giving birth to inanimate objects, or struggling to swim through wide oceans and pools.
What Do These Vivid Dreams Mean?
One of the perplexing questions pregnant women struggle with after such dreaming episodes is “What do these pregnancy dreams mean?”. Each month of your pregnancy is marked by certain physical and emotional changes that happen to your body. So, what you dream is closely linked to the themes that are common to each stage of your pregnancy. Let us decipher the meaning of the dreams you are likely to have during each stage.
Pregnancy Dreams in the First Trimester
Early pregnancy dreams often reflect the apprehension and anxiety you have about the upcoming months. Whether you are a new mother or an experienced one, you will be going through a new phase in your life and this can bring a flurry of emotions. You may dream of giving birth to something other than a baby, the baby just appearing one fine day or of conception in weird ways. This is usually tied to your concerns about a tough pregnancy or having a normal baby.
Common dreams in early pregnancy
Women in the first trimester of their pregnancy often experience dreams that show them giving birth to grown-up children or even adults. Although weird, the significance of this dream is understandable. This is often considered to reflect their apprehensions of handling a fragile newborn. A grown child is easier to handle, and makes the pregnancy less frightening. It may also be linked to a mother's basic tensions about missing her baby's childhood phases, if she has to return to work soon after the birth. Giving birth to a grown up child eliminates the concerns of not being with the baby during infancy.
Water is another recurrent theme in early pregnancy. The pregnant mother may dream of aquatic life like fish, tadpoles or other sea creatures. The mother may also feel like she is swimming in vast bodies of water like oceans or seas.
It is believed that this is simply linked to our biological origins. Most women are aware of the fact that their babies are safely cushioned in a fluid medium in their womb, when they are first conceived. This idea in their sub-conscious minds can trigger vivid dreams of water and factors associated with it.
Pregnancy Dreams in the Second Trimester
The second trimester is usually the time when pregnant women are most relaxed after initial pregnancy symptoms subside. Hence, it is easier to sleep at this time. Nonetheless, dreams during pregnancy second trimester are usually just as absurd. Your dreams will be closely linked to the attitude you have towards your pregnancy.
Common dreams in this trimester
In the second trimester, the pregnancy feels very real and the symptoms of a growing pregnancy soon become evident. Mothers are aware that the baby within their uterus is growing fast and may even be aware of what it resembles at each stage. So, many women in this stage dream of various animals. The young ones of animals may feature in your dreams, and it is usually of adorable little animals like pups, chicks and kittens.
Occasionally, there may also be dreams of frightening and less appealing creatures, like snakes or fish. The basic understanding is that the animals you see will depend on your personal perception of your unborn baby. When you feel connected and happy during your pregnancy, your dreams will show animals you love. However, if you aren't entirely happy with your situation or frightened of giving birth, this will reflect in your dreams.
Nightmares are rather common in this initial stage of pregnancy. The most popular one is about the father having an affair or abandoning you. As the pregnancy progresses, many women feel insecure about their looks.
They may not be happy with the physical changes that their bodies undergo. This insecure feeling in their minds at this stage is the likely cause for such dreams. It is also a factor that women feel less independent at this phase. So, this tension in their minds and change in situation can trigger nightmares where they are stranded by the people they love.
There is also the underlying worry of a hard delivery for which they will require their partner's physical and emotional support. It is basically their vulnerability to physical changes in their body that trigger such emotionally draining dreams.
Pregnancy Dreams in the Third Trimester
With the delivery looming near, worrying dreams may again resurface. In your sub-conscious mind, you may be worried about a difficult labour and delivery, about the life changes that will soon happen and also for the safety of your child. This can result in vivid dreams that can scare you.
Your dreams of unfortunate incidents in life and unhappy situations simply reflect the apprehensions in your mind. The anticipation of seeing your child for the first time and knowing its sex can also result in dreams where you see such interpretations for the better or worse.
Common dreams during third trimester
With the delivery date soon approaching, many women in the third trimester dream of giving birth to a boy or girl. The sex of the child usually shows up in dreams at this stage. They may see the baby very clearly, and it will be discernible if the baby is a boy or girl.
It is also likely that mothers at this stage see babies being born with characteristic traits they do not like in themselves or their partners. This is simply a reflection of the fears and worries that a mother may have in her mind. When she sees her baby inherit the traits she hates in her dreams, it is just her biggest fears being played out.
At this stage parents have usually fixed or are in the process of considering likely names for their child. So, names are a recurring theme in maternal dreams in the third trimester. The names may range from absurd to very meaningful names. It could also be the easy way out for some mothers who are having a tough time deciding on the ideal name for their child.
Nightmares During Pregnancy
Scary dreams during pregnancy can occur at all phases of your pregnancy. These are absolutely normal, since you are going through many changes in your life. Even if you aren't openly bothered by the changes, it isn't unusual to harbour concerning thoughts about it. The different emotions that plague your mind often show up as nightmares or scary dreams.
As your body grows bigger, your sleep is interrupted and you will feel exhausted. Inconsistent sleep schedules, a body that is too tired and many unanswered questions in your mind will combine together to create dreams that try to address these issues in bizarre ways. Expecting mothers have a lot of concerns for their unborn baby. They may worry that the baby may have undesirable traits, be unhealthy or unsafe. In such cases, they end up with nightmares about what they dread and this can greatly affect their attitude and disposition. In such cases, it is good to remember that this is your body's way of responding to the situation. However, such nightmares are not prophetic, and DO NOT reveal the future or the truth.
What Can You Do About These Strange Pregnancy Dreams?
If you find yourself constantly struggling with strange and worrying pregnancy dreams, it is best to tackle the situation instead of avoiding it.
Firstly prepare yourself mentally with the assurance that these frightening or weird dreams are just your body's way of reacting to your current situation. You needn't worry about any of it coming true. Talk to your doctor if you need some reassurance.
Next, address your sleep issues promptly. Although it is impossible to sleep continuously and comfortably throughout your pregnancy, you can always improve your situation.
Make sure you aren't too exhausted by sleep time and that you use pillows and other comfortable items that enable you to get better sleep.
If you suffer from night-time cramps, talk to your doctor and address the issue.
With a few suitable lifestyle changes, you will attain better sleep and the frequency of your nightmares will also come down. Make a conscious effort to get peaceful nights’ sleep and give your body the rest it needs for a healthy pregnancy. Read more

How To Choose a Good Paediatrician for Your Baby
Choosing a good paediatrician may seem like a daunting task to most new parents. Do go through our checklist to help you find a good paediatrician for your baby.
Finding a good paediatrician is the top priority for most expecting and new parents. During the initial months, parents need timely guidance on every aspect – baby vaccinations, milestones, and general child care, and also during emergencies. Having an experienced, friendly and helpful doctor will not only make the life of parents smooth but will also assure them that their child will get quality medical assistance when needed.
Many parents take recommendations for a good paediatrician from their friends, family and neighbours. They may even consult their physician or obstetrician as they might know local paediatricians who are competent and well-respected in the medical community. But remember, what works for others may not work for you. When it comes to your baby, it is advisable to be completely sure about the doctor before you start taking his services.
Paediatrics includes general paediatrics and paediatrics sub-specialties. A general paediatrician treats common illnesses in infants and children while specialists practice medicine in other areas as well. Paediatric specialized fields are endocrinology, gastroenterology, immunology and infectious diseases, oncology, clinical pharmacology, respiratory medicine, rheumatology, etc. For your child’s routine vaccinations and common illnesses, you will need to consult a general paediatrician. However, for more specific illnesses, you will need the services of a specialist. This will mostly be recommended by your child’s general paediatrician itself.
Here is a checklist to help you choose the right paediatrician for your child:
Confirm The Medical Certification
Most doctors have their medical certificates framed and put up in their clinic. Check out if the doctor’s qualification (MBBS, MD/MS) meets your requirement.
Location of The Clinic/Hospital
The paediatrician should be in your locality. The proximity to a doctor’s clinic can make a lot of difference when you need to rush there during an emergency. The clinic/office should be accessible by private or public transportation.
Hospitalisation Facility
Some doctors have a nursing home facility attached to their clinic. If not, you can find out the doctor’s current hospital appointments, and also where your child would be admitted if the need arises.
Working Hours
Working hours of the doctor should be convenient to you. If you are a working parent, it will be desirable that the doctor works in evenings or on weekends.
After-hours Consultation
Does the doctor provides his private number where he can be reached during an emergency situation? Does he take after-hours (night time, weekends or holidays) calls or returns your phone calls?
Back-up Doctor
In case he is on leave or his clinic is closed, is there another physician who can cover for the doctor in his absence?
Easy Appointment
Can you make an appointment on short notice if your child requires to see a paediatrician for a sudden illness?
Friendly Atmosphere
Does the staff at the clinic behave courteously and amicably with you and your child? Some clinics have the facility of a small kids’ play area or provide attractive toys to keep the kids engaged during the waiting period. Any pediatrician’s room should have enough colourful toys to keep babies engaged while the examination is being done, or injection administered. Though it may not seem so important at first, it comes in very handy.
Paediatrician’s Behaviour
A lot rides on the way the paediatrician behaves with you and your child.
The doctor should appear to be friendly and genuinely interested in the problems of your child or any health disorders she may have.
He should listen to your concerns, guide you well and shouldn’t be in a rush to move on to his next patient.
He should be able to communicate and explain to you in an easy language.
Many doctors are eager to resort to medication even for a small illnesses. Find out if the doctor takes time to understand the root problem of your child and tries to solve it without resorting to extreme medication.
Does the doctor share with you the details of your child’s vaccination schedule?
Doctor’s Fees
What are the doctor’s consultation fees? Does he charge the same for repeated visits for the same illness?
Special Treatment
Is the doctor well-qualified to provide treatment if your child ever develops a complex illness? If no, will he show readiness to co-ordinate with one or more specialists for providing treatment to your child?
Consultation Age Limit
Some doctors are qualified to take care of patients of all ages. A family physician who knows the medical history of all family members is better suited to treat all the members. When seeing a paediatrician, find out till what age he consults for.
Choosing the right paediatrician is very important because he is the one you will consult, not only in case of illnesses, but also in panic situations. Hence, consider all the above-mentioned points before you decide on one. Sometimes it may happen that after a few consultations with the doctor you may realize that you are not comfortable with him or don’t trust his diagnosis. Don’t be alarmed or embarrassed to switch to another good paediatrician then. Remember, what’s most important is your child’s health. Read more

The Most Memorable Morning - From Hospital Room to Operation Theater!!!
It was a chilling morning of December and the blessings of Almighty was spreading everywhere as it was Christmas day. It was my second operation. My first child came to me through C-sec so my second one was obviously also going to be C-sec. We all were mentally very well prepared for my operation as it was planned, but still I had the same nevousness and excitement to go for a surgery.
My operation was timed at 9 so that morning was very special for everyone. We all woke up around 6 in the morning though I didn't sleep the whole night, and the nurse came and did the needful preparations for me.
It was around 8 in the morning when I got a call that now it's time for me to head over to OT. My elder daughter was super excited to meet her sibling. I got myself ready in hospital gown and prayed to God for all well being. I had all my close family with me at that time though it was chilly. There were innumerable thoughts in my mind while I was going from my room to OT, though my OT was only two rooms away from my room. The thoughts were, How will the surgery be conducted again? Will I be able to survive through all trauma? Will I have a girl or boy? If its a boy, how will my daughter react (as she wanted a girl)? Will I be able to manage two kids? How much it will pain after surgery? And I know everyone who has gone through this will be able to relate to my feelings.
I was then told to lie on the stretcher before the doctor came so that the assistants and the anaesthetics can do their job. Believe me surgery is not as painful as getting the catheter and the injection on your spinal cord, it's the worst part of C-sec. After all hustles of getting catheter and anaesthesia, I was told by my doc to breathe deep and then it all started. I could not feel the pain but surely I was feeling the scissors and the amniotic fluid going out. My doc during the whole surgery was talking to me so that I don't panic much. And then with one pull, it was 8:40 am and I saw my little angel crying. It was Christmas and Jesus blessed me with a baby boy. The moment I saw my boy and felt him, every confusion every pain and all nervousness just vanished away and then all I did was just gazing at my little one. Everything went well and we were home on the 6th day..
I hope every mom, having C-sec would relate to my feelings and I hope everyone enjoys this journey.
