Top 10 Smoking Alternatives
Smoking, we’ve been told time and again, is injurious to health. Sure, it gives you a few minutes of bliss because it is an excellent stress buster, but the negative impact that comes along with it is far worse than its benefits. Each cigarette you smoke puts you at risk of cancer, heart ailments, and bad quality of life.
Healthy and Natural Substitutes for Smoking
If you’re reading this article, the chances are that you are considering or planning on ditching this bad habit. Read on for some healthy and natural substitutes to beat this addiction.
1. Keep Yourself Busy
Are you a nicotine addict? Then the chances are that you might experience withdrawal symptoms. This can be challenging, as most of the symptoms experienced include restlessness, anxiety, irritation, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood changes. To be able to deal with this, you need to keep yourself busy. Take up a new course or join a community. This way, you will keep your mind busy.
2. Make Sure You Do Not Isolate Yourself
Most of the time smoking is a social activity. People take smoke breaks in between long hours of work or during a get-together. If you’ve decided to give up smoking, the chances are that you cut yourself from your usual smoker buddies. Chain smokers might have mood changes during this phase which will further accelerate the need to isolate yourself. But you need to avoid doing this. Giving up smoking is not a form of punishment. You do not have to deal with this alone. Talk to your near and dear ones, tell them about your decision. Tell your smoker buddies about this step in the other direction, so that they understand your boundaries.
3. Think About the Benefits of Not Smoking
Cravings can be hard when you focus on how much you really need a smoke. Instead, look in the other direction. Think of how you are not killing your lungs, and eventually yourself. Your heart is now much healthier than when you are constantly smoking. Even the texture of your skin and hair gets better when you give up smoking. The benefits of smoking on any given day will weigh heavier than the cons of smoking, for which there are none.
4. Take Up a New Hobby
Taking up new hobbies can have a positive effect on your life. It can help you grow and become more productive. It can also give you a sense of confidence and improve your skill set. Take up a new hobby like reading a good book or painting. There are plenty of options available for you to choose from.
5. Hit the Gym
Working out is great for your body, as well as your mind, it is also one of the best alternatives to smoking for stress relief. Sign up at the nearest gym and work your way to good health. When you smoke, the brain releases feel-good hormones. When you quit smoking, you go into a sense of withdrawal mainly because these feel-good hormones are not being produced. Exercise actually helps release these feel-good hormones, which is why we feel great after a good workout session.
6. Distract Yourself When Cravings Hit
You are bound to have cravings. This is part and parcel of giving up on addiction. But when you feel like these cravings are creeping on you, try and distract yourself with something else. Get up and take a walk, call a friend, or simply pick a book that you can read. Try not to acknowledge the cravings.
7. Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient therapy that involves thin needles that are inserted into the body. Acupuncture therapy is useful for several issues, and smoking is one of them. However, while this does not work for everyone, it does for a few - the jury is still out on whether this is an effective treatment or not.
8. Opt for Electronic Cigarettes or Herbal Cigarettes
Electronic or e-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that are a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes. Herbal cigarettes are a more organic base, which is again a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarettes. These cigarettes contain alternative smoking herbs that have little to no nicotine content. You can opt for this instead of your usual but you need to know that while these are less harmful in comparison, they are still bad for your health. The objective here is to completely put an end to this bad habit and not to opt for the lesser of two evils.
9. Pamper Yourself
Get yourself a massage or buy a box of chocolates. If you have successfully done away with smoking, then you’ve earned yourself the privilege of giving yourself incentives. This further motivates you to stick with your decision of leaving behind the pack of cigarettes.
10. Replace Cigarettes with Water or Carrot Sticks
For some smokers, one issue they face when they give up smoking is the urge to do something with their mouth. Sipping water is a great replacement for smoking. Water has only positive benefits, as opposed to smoking. If this does not work, cut up some carrot sticks and consume it whenever you feel the urge to light a cigarette.
FAQs
Here are a few frequently asked questions by those who plan on giving up smoking or want to opt for healthier alternatives -
1. Are There Any Nicotine Free Cigarettes?
Yes, nicotine-free cigarettes do exist, but before you get excited, you should know that these cigarettes are, even though not as harmful as traditional cigarettes, harmful nevertheless. Most of these cigarettes are made from mint, lemongrass, and cocoa bean shells. While these herbs do not contain nicotine, it exposes your system to other disease-causing toxins, tar, and carbon monoxide, when burnt.
2. Is E-cigarette Vapor Bad?
E-cigarettes are marketed as a healthier option to conventional cigarettes, but here’s the thing - no cigarette is ‘healthy’. E-cigarettes, in fact, contain cartridges that are actually loaded with nicotine and other chemicals, which is bad for your health. These chemicals are converted into vapour, which is inhaled by the smoker.
The best thing you can do is dropping the habit of smoking. Don’t let something so hazardous take control of your life.

Jellyfish Facts for Kids
Jellyfish are the only creatures that have been on earth even before the existence of dinosaurs. They are free-swimming marine animals with umbrella-shaped heads and long tentacles. Let's look at some more facts about this creature that has survived without a brain for more than 650 million years.
Interesting Things About Jellyfish
Here are some interesting facts about jellyfish for your preschooler.
1. Scientific Classification
Jellyfish are placed under Cnidarian phylum whose characteristic feature is the presence of a non-living and a gelatinous body embedded between the epithelial layers. There are about 2000 different types of jellyfish, and researchers believe that there are around 300,000 different species yet to be discovered.
2. Anatomy
Jellyfish come in a variety of colours and forms like white, pink, orange, yellow, blue, and green. Some of them are even multi-coloured. The body of jellyfish is composed of 90% water, and most of it is a gelatinous material referred to as mesoglea. This gelatinous material is surrounded by two layers of cells which forms the umbrella. This is called the bell.
Jellyfish have no respiratory system because their thin skin can oxygenate the body through diffusion. They do not have a central nervous system or a brain. They actually have a loose network of nerves that is present in the epidermis. This is called a nerve net, and it helps them coordinate responses and sense changes in their environment.
The mouth is housed in a bell or dome-shaped central body area that is surrounded by tentacles. From this mouth-like opening, they discard waste and eat food. Squirting water from this mouth enables them to move through the water.
3. Nature
Jellyfish are not fish. They are plankton belonging to the phylum Cnidarian and class Scyphozoan.
4. Locomotion
Their movement depends on the tide and currents of the water and wind. Some jellyfish are very sensitive to light, making them move downwards during the day. Jellyfish die in the absence of water as it can cause desiccation.
5. Gender
Jellyfish are dioecious meaning that their colony will either be completely female or male. In most cases, both female and male adults release eggs and sperm into the water where these eggs fertilize and mature to become new jellies.
6. Species
Belonging to the Staurocladia, creeping jellyfish is the smallest species of the jellyfish. It has bell discs of 0.5 mm with small tentacles that stretch out a little. They crawl at the base of the ocean and cannot be seen without a microscope or hand lens.
7. Friendliness
The friendliest species of jellyfish is the moon jellyfish. Here are some interesting moon jellyfish facts for kids.
Though they sting, the effects are short-term and mild. These are the most common species and are found in aquariums. Since this species is minuscule, in the natural habitat, they do not live for more than six months. The factors responsible for their death are lack of food, warm temperature, and diseases. In controlled conditions, they live for years because there is no competition for food and no predators.
8. Invasion
It has been found that jellyfish invasion can shut down nuclear reactors, most of which depend on ocean water intake. Many facilities were forced to temporarily cease operations as the swarms clogged the intake pipes.
9. Response to Other Marine Animals
Though many animals avoid jellies, some just like hanging around with them. Some marine creatures use jellies as a sort of bodyguard. For example, crabs sometimes hitchhike on jellies. Some go along with them for a ride inside the bell or just to stay very close to the jellyfish. There are many theories on why these tag-along marine creatures are unharmed by jellyfish. Some scientists say that these marine creatures cover themselves in mucus to keep the stingers from firing. The other reason is that they are just too careful to not come in contact with the tentacles.
10. Life Cycle
Jellyfish, like other animals, have a life cycle. The most popular stage is the medusa stage, where they swim around in the water with their tentacles hanging down. Female and male medusa then reproduce, which result in the formation of thousands of tiny larvae. These larvae are commonly referred to as planulae. These larvae then settle down on the bottom of the ocean and then form tiny polyps. These polyps, when they grow to the medusa stage, give baby jellyfish.
Unbelievable Facts About Jellyfish

New Mommy Saumya Tandon's Views on Motherhood Will Have Every Mom Nodding in Agreement!
Popular TV actress Saumya Tandon, who is best known for portraying the character of ‘Anita’ on the famous show ‘Bhabi Ji Ghar Pe Hain’, recently joined the ‘New Moms Club’ by giving birth to a baby boy on January 14th. Being a mother is a big feat, and the new mommy couldn’t agree more.
In a recent interview, Saumya confessed that being a mother has turned her life upside down, but for the better. She said that the new responsibility of the baby has made her realise what it is like to be a mother, and it certainly involves lots of hard work!
Saumya, on having embraced motherhood for the first time and having understood how difficult it is, saluted the mothers who take care of their home, family, and work on a daily basis. The new mommy appreciated women who balance their careers and household responsibilities, by calling them ‘little warriors’. She also hopes to find a balance between managing her own career and raising her baby.
[caption id="attachment_220912" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs4IiZKF8aC/?hl=en[/caption]
Saumya also shared her views on the much-conferred topic of men and women sharing household responsibilities. She opined that if women can go out for work AND manage household tasks (along with taking care of a child!), men should be able to do the same! And we are sure most mothers will agree with her. We sure do!
Taking care of a baby and raising a child is no mean feat even in normal circumstances (especially for first-time moms), but sometimes, it can be downright difficult for a woman who is a working professional. Most working women juggle their careers and the task of handling household responsibilities, and as a result, have no time for themselves. Hiring a maid or a nanny can be of help, of course; however, most of the time, the onus of the housework does fall on the woman. But, if the man of the house and the wife start sharing the burden of the household responsibilities among themselves, things will get a bit easier for both.
We have come a long way from the times when gender roles were extremely restrictive, and women were confined to the duty of taking care of kids and doing housework only, but we still have miles to go. Although a lot of women of this generation are stepping out of their comfort zone in order to pursue their dreams and make a name for themselves, a part of them is always at home, worrying about their children and family. Also, regardless of what a woman earns or how high she is up on the career ladder, she is always told to find a balance between the household responsibilities and her career. No doubt; today, many men support their wives and help with the housework, but the number of men who actually share the burden of household responsibilities (and other such tasks) with their wives is comparatively less.
Through her strong views, Saumya has rightly conveyed the plight of most mothers in India who are working as well as managing the household. We hope this situation will change soon!
The new parents have not settled on a name yet for their little miracle, but we are sure whatever they decide, it will be cute, just like their baby. On the work front, Saumya was last seen in ‘Bhabhi Ji Ghar Pe Hain’. Currently, she is focusing on her baby and her fitness.
This new year has been a harbinger of happiness in Saumya’s life. We wish the happy couple many congratulations and hope they enjoy each and every moment of their parenting journey to the fullest!

Marriage: “Love/Arranged” It doesn’t matter!!
What matters is “Love & Trust”
Let me firstintroduce myself as a newbee in writing blogs. Enclosed are my personal views in relationships.
"Love marriage or Arranged marriage" which is better?
Mmmm.. I think it completely depends on the people or maybe i should say ‘the couple’.. right?
Let’s abbreviate Love marriage as ‘LM’ and Arranged marriage as ‘AM’
There are countless couples enjoying their lives after AMand the same after LMas well. Same time in present scenario.. there are many AMgetting torn apart soon after the marriage or later. Talking about the LM...yes there are
a lot of them getting divorced too.. so which is better?
There is no physicalmedium to weigh the relationships except Love and Trust.
Love is an eternal feeling. It doesn’t matter whether its love or arranged marriage. Relationships have to be builtin trust.
In a LM,most ofthe couple already know their partners taste, character and views. Therefore, most of them gets to adjust with each other a lot faster compared to an AM.Whereas, in an AMmostly it will be a rollercoaster ride of emotions soon after marriage in adjusting with the pretty new environment. Mostly it depends on how much time you got to spend or convey your viewswith your partner before marriage. Still there are people who gets comfortable a lot easier after an AM without getting much time to get to knoweach other. Therefore it truly depends on an individual. Actually saying AM, are a good way of starting a relationship as it gives a lot of excitement to know more about your better half.
Now coming to the TRUTH.. all the above statements are applicable only at the beginning after marriage, let’s say an year or two after marriage. What happens after that?
We are all a species called HUMANS. Humans changes their nature or character according to their circumstances or surroundings they are living in. Our brains develop numerous hormones according to the moods and living environment of an individual. So what i am about to say is...
Characteristics of an individual won’t be the same throughout his/her life. Therefore it couldn’t be the same before marriage and few years after marriage, this is human science. An individuals behaviour could get bad, good or be the same. But what most of the couple should try to keep in mind is to Love and Trust your partner. There may be many Ups and Downs in a marriage. But always you should remember it takes two hands to clap. Therefore, when there are blowups in your marriage try minimizing it to a one hand clap where the sound doesn’t come out which eventually leads to the settlement of matter sooneror later. The before said statement is applicable to both the parties ie; husband and wife.
I couldgivea lot of examples and scenarios to support my viewswhich eventually drags this topic.
Therefore, comingto a conclusion: LM or AM,it doesn’t matter. The relationships truly depends on the individual’s or couples. Lets foresee beautiful marriages which lasts longer and forever through Love and Trust. So that we all can say together "Happily Everafter....!!"
