15 Weeks Pregnant: What To Expect
You have not only successfully completed the first trimester but are well into your second one at the 15th week of your pregnancy. For most of you, your morning sickness troubles should be over and your aversion to smells and food must already be under control.
The special thing about the 15th week of your pregnancy, besides the obvious, is that you will not only feel more energetic but most of you will notice that your libido is back and you may start craving for some action. Also, the best part is that your little one will not be affected by it.
Your Baby's Growth During Pregnancy- Week 15
Your baby is now about the size of an orange or an apple. At the onset of the 15th week, your baby will have started developing eyebrows, hair, and skin. More importantly, your baby’s skeleton is beginning to form properly, though it still, more or less feels like soft cartilage.
In a nutshell, your baby is definitely looking more like a fully formed human being. The ears will have positioned at the side of the head as it normally should and the eyes will have taken their position on the face. It’s possible that you may start feeling your kid moving and flexing in your tummy while your baby is also working on sucking, swallowing and breathing.
What is the Baby’s Size
Since your baby is barely as big as an apple when you are 15 weeks pregnant, your baby’s size is only around 3-4 inches long, and like an orange, your baby weighs only around 50 to 60 grams. However, you can rest assured that your baby still has his/her organs in place, maturing with each day.
In a nutshell, your baby is growing rapidly at the onset of the 15th week and should already be making it hard for you to catch your breath as your body has started working hard to accommodate the growing baby.
Common Body Changes
As your baby’s body is steadily changing in the 15th week, it is normal to expect body changes during pregnancy in yourself as well. Besides all the changes that your body has already undergone, you can look forward to changes such as:
Your baby bump should be more pronounced and the good news is that it is only going to grow more rotund.
Since your body is beginning to work hard to accommodate your baby’s body, you may start feeling congested from time to time.
Ideally, this is the time when you should be looking forward to gaining some weight.
If you have not invested in maternity wear yet, your normal clothes might start to feel constrictive.
Symptoms of Pregnancy at Week 15
By now you ou should be used to experiencing a new symptom every once in a while ever since you got pregnant! It’s needless to say that the 15th week will be no different. Some of these symptoms may include:
Sex drive: This is officially the new symptom of the 15th week of your pregnancy. While for the last few months, you may have been feeling sick, moody and in general avoided sex. However, with the onset of the 15th week, you should feel energetic enough to indulge in some pleasure.
Sensitivity to smells: Your nasal passages will tend to be more sensitive. With an increase in the volume of blood, you may experience nosebleeds.
Shortness of breath: You will also see that you will be short of breath as your body is trying to accommodate another human being.
Indigestion/ Heartburn: This is another symptom that you will definitely experience, as your hormones do their trick and relax the muscles in the digestive system.
Bleeding gums: You may notice red swollen and extremely sensitive gums at this point in your pregnancy. This mostly happens because of the pregnancy hormones that induce gingvitis (inflammation of the gums). You may also notice a small bump like pregnancy benign tumour, however, it is completely painless and harmless. In case you develop this, it will normally fade away after delivery.
Belly at 15 Weeks of Pregnancy
For most of you, your baby bump should be showing, especially if this is not your first pregnancy. For first time mothers, there is also a chance that you might still not be showing much or can at least cover up the tell-tale signs well.
In any event, the 15th week of pregnancy marks quite the transition in your second trimester and pregnancy. You should really gear up for your uterus to no longer fit well inside the pelvis. At the onset of the 15th week, it should already be stretching to accommodate your baby.
15 Weeks Ultrasound
This week’s ultrasound will reveal that your baby is doing a whole lot of stretching without you even realizing it. Now that all the limbs and joints of your baby are more formed, your baby will definitely squirm a lot inside your body. The maximum that you will ever feel from these activities would be probably a butterfly or bubble-like sensation inside your belly. It is also noteworthy that your baby is also likely to have a bout of hiccups in there.
What to Eat
Among all the things that will worry you, the 15th week pregnancy food menu will definitely feature on the top of the list. What may also stress you out about eating correctly is that you are no longer eating only for yourself, but for another human being that’s steadily growing. Before you fret, check out the list of what to eat as a suggestion.
Include a good portion of whole fruits and leafy green vegetables in your diet.
Don’t forget to include a little starch from bread and iron-fortified cereals.
Do include milk and dairy products in your diet as you need calcium for bone growth of the baby.
Round off your food worries with a good helping of proteins, especially lean meats, oily fish, eggs etc. A small portion of well-cooked of red meat will also help you get essential proteins.
Eat well-cooked eggs to get some omega 3 fatty acids.

It should come as no surprise that now is the time you keep yourself as well as your baby safe and sound. It is never too much to make wise lifestyle choices in order to give birth to a healthy baby.

Baby Eye Color - When Does it Change and More
As would-be-parents, we often wonder what kind of features our baby will have, his complexion, his hair and we even think about the colour of his eyes. If you or your partner, or both have light coloured eyes, you may wonder what would be the colour of your baby’s eyes. Here we shall discuss all the colour of the baby’s eyes and when it changes and more.
How Does Eye Colour Develop in Newborns?
The phenomenon behind how the eye colour develops in newborns in very fascinating. Science has explained to us that the babies are a combination of both their parents; however, this amalgamation of the genes takes place in more than one ways. Therefore, the colour of your baby’s eyes may depend on the genetic reasons, and the melanin may also play an active part in determining the eye colour of your baby.
When Do Baby's Eyes Change Colour?
The most significant changes in your baby’s eye colour may be noticed between 6 to 9 months of age. This is because the there has been enough pigment stashing by the iris around this age and thus you may guess what could be the final hue of your baby’s eyes. Though do not get surprised if your baby’s eye colour keeps changing by the time he is three years old. However, the darker shades of eyes remain dark and do not change. In around 10 percent cases, the colour of the eyes may keep changing in adulthood as well.
What Determines Infant Eye Colour?
The following determines or affects the colour of your baby’s eyes:
1. Melanin
Melanin plays an important role in determining the colour of your baby’s eyes too.
Low production of melanin increases the chances of newborn eye colour grey, green, hazel, or blue.
If there is more production of melanin, your baby is more likely to have a darker shade of eyes.
2. Genetics
A baby, whose both parents have blue eyes, may have blue eyes too.
A baby, whose both parents have brown eyes, may have brown eyes too.
A baby, whose one parent has blue eyes and the other has green, may have either blue or green eyes.
A baby, whose grandparent has blue eyes, may have blue eyes too.
A baby who has different shades in both the eyes may be suffering from Warrensburg Syndrome.
The above mentioned are some possibilities that you may see in your newborn baby but is not necessary that this will only happen and your baby may have different coloured eyes too.
What Colour Eyes will Your Baby Have?
Parents are often very curious to know about their unborn babies, and the colour of the eyes may be one of them. You may wonder what colour my baby’s eyes would be. It is often seen that babies whose parents have a darker shade of eyes may have dark eyes too. Similarly, if both the parents have blue or green eyes, the baby may have blue or green eyes. In case one of the parents has lighter eyes and the other has a darker shade of eyes, the baby may have either coloured eyes. What will be the final colour of your baby’s eyes or your baby permanent eye colour may become clearer by the time your baby is approximately nine months of age.
In a very rare genetic disorder, you may notice your baby having different coloured eyes. However, if you notice any change in your baby’s eye colour, you may get in touch with your doctor to know more about the same.
What if Your Baby Have Two Different Coloured Eyes?
Sometimes baby’s may have two different coloured eyes. This may happen in following conditions:
Warrensburg Syndrome: This is a genetic abnormality that may affect the colour of baby’s skin, hair and even eyes. The babies who are born with this genetic mutation may have two different coloured eyes. In some cases, the babies who are born with this defect may even have hearing loss.
Heterochromia Iridium and Heterochromia Iridis: This defect may cause two different coloured eyes or multi-coloured eyes in babies. This condition may be caused due to gene mutation or excessive pigmentation in the irises. Such defects may also result due to certain medication or trauma that the baby may experience at the time of the birth.
The treatment for both the above-mentioned conditions may vary as per the symptoms. In case your baby is diagnosed with Heterochromia then there is no need to worry as this condition is neither harmful to your baby nor it requires any treatment. However, if there is inflammation or swelling along with this condition, then it becomes necessary to reduce the inflammation and treat Heterochromia after that.
In case, where the child has a vision impairment, or the child is unable to see from one eye, tinted contact lenses may be advised by an eye specialist. The contact lenses thus prescribed may help in lighten the complexion of a dark-eye or darken the complexion of a lighter eye. If difficulty is experienced in wearing a single contact lens, lenses may get prescribed for both the eyes.
However, if you decide not to treat this condition in your child, you may do so. There are many people living a healthy life with this eye condition. But if you or your child feels the need to use tinted lenses, you may do so.
Though there may be a considerable change in newborn eye colour before, and after, you can always talk to a paediatrician to clear your doubts. It is also recommended to have regular eye-checkups for your baby, to rule out any complications that may arise.

Whether to Announce Their Arrival or Not Was the Big Question? But It Was a Christmas Miracle!
It was Christmas Eve. We were happy, and everybody was in a festive mood. The whole family was together at home, and we were planning the Christmas dinner. Usually, we go out on holidays. As we were expecting our twins in mid-Feb, we were home and hoping to welcome a new year which will bring our bundles of joy into this world. But we were in for a surprise. It looks like our babies were in no time to wait. It started with midnight cramps which I assumed to be some indigestion problem. But as they got stronger and stronger; we rushed to the hospital. And we were told that they would have to do an emergency caesarean section. I was shocked with pain, and the information was too much for me to process. I was still saying in my heart..." not now. Can't you guys wait for another month at least? Please be there safe and sound in my tummy. This world is not ready for you yet. "
But my babies did not want to miss anything. So I was given injection, medicines, anaesthesia and what not. My mind was numb; not due to pain but because I was too scared for my babies. How will they survive this hostile environment?
Then came the moment. I saw my two beautiful baby girls, so innocent, so sweet. My emotions were all over the place. But this was not the end of my ordeal; it was the start. Before I could even hold them, they had to be shifted to NICU, and all kind of tubes and masks were put on them as they were having a little breathing difficulty. To watch them lying there, it broke my heart into a million pieces. I wanted them to fight, and so was I. I was so scared even to cuddle them, they were so tiny and fragile. And then it became a ritual, going to see babies daily twice. To see them sleeping calmly. To check their parameters doing fine. Each day to get up praying for them. Whenever tests were conducted, my heart would stop and wait for results endlessly. The days appeared so much longer. It felt like the time had come to a standstill. They didn't know how to suck or swallow, but they chewed on antibiotics and saline. They would forget to breathe.. my crazy babies, so they were put on caffeine to keep them little awake.
We were told it's not easy. You know things can go wrong anytime. The monitors, the machines the blood tests it was too overwhelming. We bought our new year cake and did not know how to celebrate. Should we be celebrating your arrival or was it too early to celebrate yet?
Finally, the moment came when I could hold you in my arms and feed you. That was the first time when I felt relaxed in about a month of making endless hospital trips. My babies fought and we brought them home. But still, there was so much to be taken care of. There would be no doctor or nurses or monitors checking on them 24 hours. It would be just us. So being vigilant was very important. We sat beside them all day and night. We decided to do shifts as hospital staff does and we also kept a record book where we would record every small detail just like nurses did. This continued for about another one month.
Today is the first birthday of my babies, and I am happy and celebrating. When I look back, I find that this is the first time I am celebrating with friends and family in a year. The rollercoaster ride has stabilised a bit. They are playing, and I just look at them feel blessed.

A. the average birth weight of neonates is about 3 kg.
during the first few days after birth, the newborn loses
extracellular fluid equivalent to about 10% of the body
weight.
most infants regain their birth weight by the age of 10 days. subsequently, they gain weight at a rate of
approximately 25 to 30 g per day for the first 3 months of life.
thereafter they gain about 400 g weight every month,
for the remaining part of the first year. x
an infant usually doubles his birth weight (taken as 3 kg) by the age of 5 months. the birth weight triples at 1 year and is four times at 2 years of age.
the weight of ca child at the age of three years is usually
five times that of the birth weight.

A. Some women may have vomiting throughout their pregnancy. The most common reason for vomiting during the third trimester may be gastritis. Make sure you eat small frequent meals, preferably every 2 hours. If your baby's weight during checkups are adequate..u needn't worry much about this. You can also consult your doctor and take anti emetics and PPIs if the vomiting is bothering you or interfering with your daily activities.

Q. Is it okay is the baby does not pass stool for one day?

A. For breastfed infants it depends on age. During the first month of life, stooling less than once a day might mean your newborn isn't eating enough. However, breastfed infants may go several days or even a week between bowel movements, using every drop they eat to make more baby, not poop.
