Generally, people opt for sexual intercourse without any protection when they are looking to conceive a child. However, the possibility still remains that the traditional method of conception may not work.
Fertility-related medical conditions can make getting pregnant through intercourse difficult, apart from which several situations may require a different approach to conceiving. Being a single woman or a partner in a same-sex relationship should not deprive anyone of the joys of parenthood. There are a number of ways a woman can get pregnant even without having sexual intercourse.
Given that the traditional method of natural conception is not one that is working, or one that can be employed, there are enough options to consider to realise your dreams of becoming a parent. Medical advancements have now made it possible to not only conceive, but carry a healthy baby full term, without intercourse.
Methods of Getting Pregnant Without Intercourse
Some of the methods mentioned below can help you have your baby by becoming pregnant in a ‘different’ way.
1. In-Vitro Fertilization
In a few cases, the woman might be healthy enough to carry the baby to term, but fertilisation itself might be an issue. This is where IVF plays a vital role. IVF is available in numerous infertility clinics across the country, and the process is quite straightforward. Medication is administered to boost the egg production of the woman, which are then extracted. The eggs are then placed in conditions where they can be fertilised with the sperm of the woman’s choice. Once an embryo is successfully formed after the fertilisation, a catheter is used to open the uterus and place the embryos inside. Some women tend to feel a little pain and cramping in their abdomen as the embryos attempt to get implanted inside the uterus. This is a great way to get pregnant, but the process can get expensive.
2. Opting for the ‘Turkey Baster’ Technique
Very few people might be aware of this technique while numerous others might think of this as a quick and easy method. Mostly adopted by couples of the same gender, this can be compared to artificial insemination. And no, you don’t use an actual turkey baster for this technique!
The steps are rather simple. Sperm needs to be procured either from a known person or the sperm bank. An insemination syringe is then used to collect the sperm, which is then inserted inside the vagina of the woman, letting the sperms inseminate within. This is rather painless, and there is no recovery time as such since this isn’t a medical procedure. Having the pelvic portion tilted upwards for some minutes to stop the sperm from spilling outside is recommended.
Bear in mind that when attempting at home insemination, there are some very important points to know. Before you go through with it, speak with your doctor to understand safety precautions that you must adhere to, do’s and don’ts as well as your chances of conception through this method.
Track your period, and ensure the dates that you are working with are in your fertile period, close to your date of ovulation.
Do not attempt to insert the sperm into the uterus or cervix, as this can be extremely dangerous. Sperm should be inserted only into the vagina.
Use a new, clean, needleless disposable syringe, to insert the sperm into the vagina. Collect the semen in a clean dry receptacle, then pull into the syringe.
Make sure that there is no air in the syringe, as the introduction of an air bubble may cause an embolism which can be fatal.
Remember that this method of insemination does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases.
3. Insemination within the Uterus
This is a slightly advanced medical technique, termed as IUI, which is a combination of the turkey baster technique and IVF. This is usually opted for by couples where the male partner’s fertility levels are low or by single women who are fit to have a baby. During ovulation, the egg reaches the uterus, awaiting fertilisation by a sperm. In IUI, the woman chooses the sperm either from a donor or the bank. A medical professional then introduces the sperm right inside the uterus close to the egg using a catheter. The process is similar to that of a Pap smear test. Lying down by tilting the pelvis upwards can help increase the chances of fertilisation. Most women feel only minor cramps, and they can resume their usual lives within no time. However, this process might have to be repeated for a bunch of cycles until it is successful.
4. Splash Pregnancy
At times, a couple may fail to have proper sexual intercourse because of conditions like erectile dysfunction or vaginismus, faced by a man and woman respectively. This makes it either difficult to have intercourse or painful. However, there is still a way for the couple to try and get pregnant. Many young adults are advised to use protection because even the slightest exposure of sperm to the vagina can cause a woman to get pregnant. This is exactly what a couple can try and use to their advantage, by trying to have an ejaculation as close to the vagina as possible. Some women can bear penetration up to a certain depth. This is even better since the ejaculation can take place inside the vagina and the woman can tilt her pelvis upwards to increase chances of conception.
Success using this method is at random, but you can always choose to do this before opting for any other methods.
5. Having a Surrogate Carry the Baby
In some couples, one or both partners may be infertile, or the woman might not have a uterus strong enough to hold the baby. But couples tend to want a baby of their own. This can be achieved via surrogacy. The sperm of the male and the eggs of the female are combined in a laboratory environment to allow fertilisation and the formation of an embryo. This embryo is then placed in the womb of a willing surrogate, who will carry the baby for the duration of the pregnancy, and then hand it over to the original parents. Surrogacy, of course, is an expensive option with fees and other expenses to be taken into account.
Now, it certainly is up for debate whether you would ‘technically’ be pregnant if you have a surrogate carrying your baby. But no doubt, you will most certainly have a baby that will be your very own in every way.
There are numerous ways to get pregnant without penetration, and each one has its benefits and costs associated with it. Intercourse might not be a choice or a possibility in a few cases, and this is where medical science can come to your rescue. However, if none of these methods seem to work, it is best to keep yourself open for adoption as well, since that can provide you with the joy of being a parent, too.

Is It Safe to Use an Electric Blanket During Pregnancy?
While traditional blankets keep you warm by trapping your body heat within it, electric blankets use electricity to heat up a thin, insulated copper wire inside the blanket to warm it up before you even get into bed! If, on a cold wintery evening, you have heard the phone ringing in the other room and dreaded the idea of having to let go the blanket, get cold, and then come back to bed, only to have to wait again, for warmth to build up, then you know exactly why the ‘electric blanket’ was invented! But if you are pregnant, you will wonder if it is safe to use during pregnancy.
What Makes an Electric Blanket Unsafe for Pregnant Women?
Where there is electricity, there are electromagnetic fields. The adverse effects on the human body, from exposure to this invisible field, are still being studied. The presence of an electromagnetic field is one of the reasons why mobiles are considered dangerous to keep in your pockets on a long-term basis. The same is the case with an electric blanket. It is believed that the overheating of the blanket could affect the baby.
Risks Associated with Using an Electric Blanket While Pregnant
Following are the risks associated with using an electric blanket during pregnancy:
Studies on the effects of low-frequency electromagnetic fields on the human body show that short-term exposure does not cause any adverse reactions in people. Studies on long-term exposure do not always concur. (Exposure to high-frequency EMF is universally agreed upon to have a negative impact on health) However, when dealing with a pregnancy, one’s choices affect their child as well, so why take a risk?
The higher the settings on an electric blanket, the stronger the EMF it produces. The difference in the strength of the field on low settings to high settings can be up to three-fold! This compounds the risk of a miscarriage.
Using an electric blanket on high settings could cause a miscarriage. This risk is highest during the first seven weeks of pregnancy.
Using an electric blanket on high settings frequently over the course of the pregnancy is linked to low weight in babies at birth.
Overheating increases the risks associated with the use of electric blankets. High heat could disrupt the development of neural tube in the foetus during the early stages (first trimester). This could result in serious conditions such as spina bifida.
Overheating could also make one sweat while they sleep, leading to dehydration.
Precautionary Tips for Using an Electric Blanket in Pregnancy
If using an electric blanket, it is recommended that you take these precautions (as they may apply):
Use a low voltage electric blanket.
Use a temperature regulating electronic blanket, as they automatically maintain a steady temperature and won’t overheat.
If the weather is not severely cold, it is better to turn off the power after the blanket heats up. Since the blanket will trap your body heat anyway, it will not go cold later on.
There has been no indication of adverse biological effects in individuals who used an electric blanket at low settings throughout their pregnancy.
Risks in foetal development due to overheating are much lower after the first seven weeks of pregnancy. So, avoiding electric blankets during this time is advised.
Avoid using an electric blanket towards the last weeks of your pregnancy. In the event of your water breaking, the blanket will get soaked, causing a short-circuit and the possibility of fire.
Alternatives to Electric Blankets
Can you use an electric blanket while pregnant? Sure, you can! All the risks associated with using electric blankets occur during the first two and last months of your pregnancy, and for the most part, when the blanket is in high settings. But, why take a risk? There are always alternatives you might consider:
Traditionally, before the invention of electric blankets, a hot water bottle was brought to bed, to heat up the inside of the blanket. So, go traditional.
The modern-day alternative to the hot water bottle is the heating pad. These are long, soft, and pliable allowing you to wrap them around your neck or body. All you need to do is microwave it to heat it up, and you are ready to go!
Layering up is another way to go! Put on a warming nightcap, socks, and thermal inner wear, and add layers to your outerwear to keep yourself warm and cosy.
Electro-magnetic fields quickly fade in strength as you move away from the source. A ten-centimetre distance could slash its strength by 90%. So, a good way to combat the effects of the EMF would be to use a thick duvet between you and the electric blanket.
Other than these alternatives and precautions, manufacturers of electric blankets have taken concern on the effects of EMF and have developed blankets with very low to no magnetic field. Such advancement may well pave the way for universally safe electric blankets!

It's Ok to Not Be Able to Feed Your Baby!
Hello, new mums!
I'm the mother of a two-and-a-half-month-old son. I started producing surplus milk shortly after giving delivery, which I had to pump every 2 hours. Seeing it, all of my concerns about whether or not I would be able to feed my baby vanished. However, there is a catch! After a month, my milk supply began to dwindle, so I went to my family doctor, who sent me to a lactation consultant, and I began taking a tablet twice a day to increase my supply.
Apart from that, I've been following specific age-old recipes for a good milk supply since the time of birth. The tablets did not work for me, so I began taking granules that should be mixed with milk and eaten twice daily. Finally, none of these ways worked for me, and as a result of using them all, my body became overly heated, resulting in blisters. My doctor then affirmed that a mother's natural propensity to make less milk can occur in some situations, and that it's fine to accept this and go forward.
Now, the mother in me could not accept this tendency, so I continued to take all of my medications in order to feed my baby milk. I began to believe that I had failed as a mother because I couldn't feed my child. Just a few days ago, I realised that being a true mother means being able to comprehend my baby's requirements and feeding him according to those needs, even if it means making your child have formula milk.
The point to make here is that when I tried to force my infant to consume solely my feed, he began to lose weight. He's now a healthy infant with the appropriate height and weight. Mothers who are unable to feed their children directly, please don't be worried. Certain things are beyond our control, and the most essential thing for us is to stay healthy and be capable to care for our child at all times. The most crucial thing to consider is overall development and wellbeing of your baby. I'm not pushing anyone to switch to formula feeding, but if you have to, here's how to get started. It's perfectly acceptable if it's appropriate for your child!

Popcorn (microwave)
The days of making popcorn the old-fashioned way - on a stove top are gone. Here's a quick popcorn recipe, that you can make using a microwave. Popcorn can serve as a healthy snack that fits well in your weight loss regime or even serves as a quick snack for your kids while on the go or even at home. Air-popped popcorn is naturally high in dietary fiber, low in calories and fat, and free of sugar and sodium. However, for the sake of flavor, large amounts of fat, sugar, and sodium are often added to prepared popcorn, which can quickly convert it to a very poor choice for those on restricted diets. Believe it or not, you can make your own delicious, low-fat, healthy, microwave popcorn using standard popping corn and a brown paper lunch bag. It works perfectly.
