E. Coli (Escherichia Coli) in Pregnancy
E. coli is an infection that is generally caused by a dirty environment. Though the symptoms of this infection usually pass within a week, it is still pretty terrible while you are suffering from it.
What is an E. coli Infection
E. coli or Escherichia coli is a bacterium that can be found naturally in your vagina and gut. It is generally harmless, but the problem arises when the bacterium makes its way to places such as your kidneys or stomach. There are various strains of E. coli bacterium, out of which a few of them are known to be dangerous. These types of E. coli may lead to infections and other issues during pregnancy.
What Are the Various Sources of E. coli
While some types of E. coli are naturally present in your body, there are others which enter your body through different mediums. Some of the sources of E. coli are listed below:
Unwashed vegetables and fruits
Uncooked meat
Human or animal faeces
Non-purified or contaminated tap-water, especially if it comes in contact with agricultural or sewage water.
Water in swimming pools which has not been cleaned or treated with chlorine
Unpasteurized fruit juices
Unpasteurized milk
E. coli can also be transferred by touch. If an individual having E. coli bacteria in their hand touches you, there is a strong likelihood of you getting infected.
Symptoms of Escherichia coli Infection during Pregnancy
Some of the symptoms of Escherichia coli infection during pregnancy are as follows:
1. Nausea
It is the most common symptom of E. coli infection: a groggy feeling in the stomach or a bad feeling in the back portion of the throat.
2. Abdominal Cramps
It becomes really difficult for a pregnant woman to bear any kind of pain perceived in the abdominal region during pregnancy.
3. Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is a state in which faecal matter is frequently discharged in a liquid state. You may have mild watery stools diarrhoea or severe bloody ones.
4. Vomiting
It is the dismissal of the innards of the stomach through the mouth. You might feel nauseous before vomiting.
5. Fatigue
Fatigues is simply a feeling of extreme tiredness that can be a result of physical exertion, mental exertion or illness.
6. Dehydration
Dehydration means excessive loss of water from the body. Dehydration can be caused by the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract that cause diarrhoea or vomiting.
7. Gas
The human body produces gas naturally as a result of digestion. Sometimes, it produces even more gas if you consume certain fibre-rich foods. It is probably a normal amount even if you think that you are suffering from excessive gas. Infection caused by the E. coli bacteria affects your GIT, thus producing more gas.
8. Blood in Urine
Blood starts to appear in your urine if the infection is not diagnosed on time.
9. Fever
It is said that you have a fever if your body temperature is above the normal range of 98.6 F. In general practice, a person is not usually considered to have a high fever until the body temperature rises above 100.4 F.
10. Pale Skin
Pale skin or paleness is an unusual lightness of the colour of the skin compared to your normal complexion of the skin. It may have been caused by a decrease in the number of red blood cells or reduction in oxygen and blood flow. It is also known as pallor or pale complexion.
11. Skin Bruising
The bruise is an injury or mark where the skin has not been cracked but is darker in colour.
Does E. coli Affect Pregnancy
E. coli infection in a pregnant woman can affect your pregnancy by increasing various complications:
E. coli can cause diarrhoea which results in loss of body fluids leading to dehydration. This can lead to issues like neural tube defects and low amniotic fluid.
In some rare cases, the pregnant woman may start to bleed heavily. Thus, there might be a chance of preterm rupture of membranes, miscarriage, premature delivery or stillbirth in case of severe E. coli infection.
It is also reported that E. coli infection can cause low birth weight.
How to Treat an E. coli Infection During Pregnancy
Pregnant women can take up a course of antibiotics to treat E. coli infection. You should ensure that the antibiotic is safe for the foetus and the mother. Some antibiotics that can be taken for treating E. coli infection are Nitrofurantoin and Cephalosporins. Most healthy people recover from E. coli within a couple of days without taking any kind of medication.
Note: You should take antibiotics only after getting a prescription from a medical professional.
How Can You Prevent an Escherichia coli Infection in Pregnancy
To avoid E. coli bacteria during pregnancy:
Make sure you clean your hands with a disinfectant after touching raw meat.
Always wash your hands with soap after using or cleaning the toilet, handling linens or dirty towels, changing diapers and touching animals. This is because E. coli is found in urine and faecal matter.
Make sure you cook the meat properly.
You should clean any surface that touches raw meat with a bleach or disinfectant.
Drink only pasteurized milk, ciders and juice.
Put all fruits and vegetables in a container of salted water before consuming.
You should avoid swimming as the water may be contaminated.
If you think that you might have E. coli infection, consult your health care provider at the earliest. It can be easily treated if it is diagnosed on time. One of the best ways to prevent E. coli infection is to ensure that you have a clean surrounding and try to eat properly cooked meals.

Tips for Dealing with Stealing in Children
If you catch your child taking some sweets from a shop or stealthily hiding a sibling’s toy car in his jacket, then you may have a pickpocket on your hands. On finding out that your child steals can be an upsetting experience for you as a parent. But there are some tips to deal with this and ensure that your child refrains from this habit in the future.
Why Do Children Steal?
Kids can steal from their friends, siblings, parents, or even shoplift. Here are a few reasons why kids resort to stealing:
1. Lack of Control
Lack of control over his actions may make your child steal whatever appealing thing is there in front of him. A child may involuntarily do it without thinking if he finds something appealing.
2. Pressure from Peers
If your child has a bad company at school, i.e., if he has friends who have a habit of stealing from others, then he may even develop this habit of stealing. In the beginning, he might hesitate but later seeing his friends doing it frequently, he may develop this habit, too.
3. Lack of Attention
If your child feels that he is not getting enough attention from you or from a teacher at the school, he might resort to stealing to get the attention he thinks he deserves.
4. The Desire to Get an Expensive Object
If you tell your child that you cannot buy some toy that he wants desperately, then he might end up stealing it out of that want.
5. For Fun
Your child might feel an adrenaline rush to steal something and may continue doing it simply for fun.
How Can You Stop Your Child from Stealing?
If you have seen your child steal multiple times, then don't shout at him as it won't help. Stay calm and patient so that you can make your kid give away this habit. Punishing a child for stealing money or anything else may not be the right solution. You have to teach a child a lesson about stealing in a non-aggressive way. Here are a few ways in which you can deal with it and slowly make him get rid of this bad habit:
1. Be Patient
If you see your child stealing something, then don't hit him or scream at him ever. Stay calm and make him realise that it is wrong, without forcing him to say sorry. Forcing him to say sorry won't do any good. He may agree for the moment out of fear but continue stealing later. So, be patient and talk to him in a gentle tone.
2. Tell Him That it Is Wrong
You have to let your child know that such actions are wrong. Make him realise that stealing is wrong and could land him in jail in future. Tell him the consequences of it in the long run and he will understand that it is an unacceptable act.
3. Don’t Accuse
Sometimes, it may be false or just a misunderstanding. So don’t ever point fingers at your child unless you have yourself seen it or heard about it first hand from someone you know and trust. This will make your child stay away from you or distrust you.
4. Steer Him Clear from Tempting Situations
Once you have seen your child steal once, make sure you don’t get into situations that might tempt him to do so again. For example, hide your purse, keep your money and other expensive items locked.
5. Spend Time with Your Child
Deepen your attachment with your child by spending quality time with him. This can help your child feel loved. He may even open up to you about his needs and stop stealing. Especially if it is due to the feeling of neglect.
6. Practice Forgiveness
Even though it might be hard, you need to forgive your child and give him a hug and kiss. This can help the child stop stealing if he gets that extra attention and forgiveness from you.
7. Find the Root of the Problem
Do a little digging to find out the root cause of your child’s stealing problem. Talk to his teachers and find out if your child is in the wrong company at school. Observing your child’s peers is the first hint to such habits.
8. Ask Your Child to Fix the Mistake
Once you catch your child stealing, ask him to apologise and return the item to the person who he stole it from. This experience can humble your child and make him stop stealing. You can accompany him to apologise to the concerned person or help him write out an apology letter.
9. Compliment Your Child’s Honesty
Praise your child for his honesty if he admits that he stole. Make it like he found your lost item and tell him you expected this honesty from him.
10. Tell Him What is Ownership
Teach your child about sharing and also the concept of someone owning something. Tell him that he has to ask before touching anything that belongs to someone else.
When to Worry
The habit of stealing in children may start out small but must be curbed before it turns big. In the beginning, you can let it go with a warning but if it continues, you need to know when to step into a bigger role in dealing with your kid’s habit. It might be because of a recent change in your life which makes you give less attention to him. Like a divorce or a new sibling or a new job. Your child may also have a rare disorder like kleptomania which makes him compulsively steal. If you notice that your kid is stealing repeatedly, then maybe it’s time to consider the following options:
Consult a counsellor or a family therapist.
Visit your family doctor who can point you in the direction of a good counsellor.
If these offences happen at school, talk to the school’s counsellor.
There are several groups online which offer support to kleptomaniacs and shoplifters. You can consider joining them with your child.
A professional counsellor can definitely help in talking to your child and suggesting strategies to help him and quit the habit of stealing. This may be in the form of activities or workshops in which you can also participate. This will help strengthen your bond with your child. If you pay attention to your kid, he will listen to you and realise that what you say is right since you only want the best for him.
Whatever the case is, your child needs to learn that stealing is a crime and that it is unacceptable. You can follow the above tips and also monitor your child’s behaviour so that you can keep him away from situations that tempt stealing.

11 Tips on How to Motivate Children
Children need a supporting hand to guide them as they learn how to grapple with the world. A child must engage with his/her world and make the best of the opportunities available while keeping their feet firmly on the ground. Motivating your child to find something they love and them sticking with it can be hard. However, there are some methods that you can employ to getting your child interested in the things around them such as setting goals, planning and rewarding.
Best Ways to Motivate Your Child
Providing motivation for kids can seem like a daunting task especially when they grow a little older. Here are 11 tips on motivating children to do their best.
1. Setting Goals
One of the most important things to motivate your child is to set goals for him. Kids need direction and structure to guide them into better adults. Set easy goals for your child like cleaning up the table after studying or setting an alarm every night. One of the best ways to set goals is to have a discussion with your child on how to achieve these goals. Does your child want an alarm clock to set an alarm every day? Do they want to bake their own birthday cake? Make it interesting to the child and you are bound to see a marked difference.
2. Planning
Having a plan will also help your child understand structure. This should be done with the active involvement of your child. If they want to make it to their school’s basketball team, then what are the steps they are taking and how much practice will they need? Pay attention to your child’s input and they will automatically feel responsible for the task at hand.
3. Rewarding
Most parents fall into the trap of bribing their child into doing something whether it is cleaning their room or studying for an hour every day. While this might work in the short term, it will not help build character or instil values. While using rewards, think of meaningful things that will bring joy to your child. It could be a day spent with you or baking cookies together. Ask your child how they feel after they complete a task. This will teach them to understand that the experience itself and the feelings that come along could be the reward.
4. Explanations
Children love to have conversations that satisfy their curiosity. When asking your child to do something, take a moment to explain why they the need to do a task. The worldview of your child can be very different and not necessarily logical. As an adult, you need to find compelling reasons and figure out what motivates your child. Examples include telling your child that cleaning his room would allow them and their friends to be able to play easily.
5. Encouraging
Encouragement is vital to not just children, but adults too. Engage in positive reinforcement and recognize the efforts your child is putting in. If they make any progress, applaud them for their hard work and dedication. Encouragement cannot be vague but must be descriptive so that your child knows exactly which values you hold in high esteem. Encourage them to persist with things that they have failed at. This is one of the best methods for positively motivating young children.
6. Appreciation
Appreciate any efforts your child makes, such as helping with dinner or cleaning up his room without being told. Do not make this a teaching moment, but just enjoy the fact that your child has done something that they should be proud of. Children need to learn how to pat themselves on the back and they will learn this from you.
7. Choices and Their Consequences
It is very important that you teach your child that the choices they make will have consequences and they will have to learn to deal with them. Give your child decision making responsibilities such as choosing which toy to play with or choosing what dress to wear. Older children can be given the choice of choosing an activity that they have to stick with and learn the activity to the best of their abilities.
8. Don’t Nag
You might think that you are just motivating a lazy child, but being pushy will only demotivate your child. Nagging could also just make your child rebellious and do the opposite of what you want.
9. Embracing Flaws
Teaching your child that everyone comes with flaws, including you, is an important lesson. Kids should be taught that flaws are a part of life and they shouldn’t come in the way of finding success or happiness. If your child is conscious of how she looks but loves the water, then encourage them to try swimming and take her shopping to find a swimsuit that she will be comfortable in.
10. Lead by Example
One of the best ways to teach children is by leading by example. Children are great imitators and will pick up habits (both good and bad), words, life skills, and even expressions used by the adults around them. Use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when talking to people around you as well as while talking to your children. It also shows them that you respect them. Sometimes you do not have to figure out what motivates your child to get her to imbibe some values. Your behaviour could be enough for her to learn.
11. Take Interest
Sometimes it seems that all you can do is get the kids ready, rush to work, come home to fix dinner, clean up and crash into bed. However, it is necessary that you take interest in the lives of your children. When you are interested, you children will believe that the things they are doing are worth something. You can ensure this by getting your children to help you fix dinner and then asking them about their day. Do not make this exercise about teaching them a life lesson. Just be interested and ask them questions about how they feel about the goings on in their lives.
Motivation and children can seem like a formidable task. However, the more you realize that when you engage your children with respect, the better the response will be from them. Use examples that they can relate to and do not preach. Avoid words like ‘should’ and ‘must’ and make it seem like they are making choices for themselves rather than choices being made for them.
Using the above tips should help you see a change in your child's manners, behaviour and attitude towards their studies and other various activities. If they continue to remain lacklustre then it is best that you consult with the child's school counsellor for further guidance.
