How to Handle a Hyperactive Child
If you've got a problem-child at home who can't seem to sit still or listen mindfully, then that may be a sign of hyperactivity. It gets even worse if you hear complaints from the teachers of your child's recklessness and lack of care both inside and outside the classroom. Here's everything you need to know about hyperactivity in children and tips for dealing with them.
What is Hyperactivity in Children?
Hyperactivity in children is characterized by reckless behaviour and too much activity that stems from receiving a lack of sufficient attention. Hyperactive kids are prone to never get tired, can't focus or have short attention spans in general. Hyperactivity in children results in poor academic performance, lack of socialization and in severe cases, even complete withdrawal from participation in group activities, thus leading to depression, frustration, and poor self-esteem.
What Causes Hyperactivity in Kids?
Hyperactivity in kids is caused when there is an imbalance in the production of the two neurotransmitters - adrenaline and dopamine - in the brain. Hyperactivity primarily stems from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and most cases of hyperactivity are linked to ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
The other causes of hyperactivity include the environment and the families kids belong to. Here's how hyperactivity is caused in kids in households-
Authoritarian Parenting - When parents become too restrictive with their rules and do not allow the child to be flexible such as - when a kid gets constantly punished for failing to get his grades up and is scolded instead of being talked to, that's a sign of authoritarian parenting. Authoritarian parenting lowers children's confidence, weakens self-esteem and all that lack of mental upbringing translates to poor results and hyperactivity in the classroom. Since kids feel inferior, they vent out their frustration by failing even more or being hyperactive at home or in school.
Neglectful Parenting - If you constantly neglect your kid and don't tend to his needs, then he won't have a person or parent to turn to for advice when he's in trouble or faces something outside his comfort zone. Neglectful parenting also imbibes a lack of sense of certainty and children sometimes don't know the consequences of their actions, thus acting reckless and hyperactive without a second care in the world.
Overprotective Parenting - Do you clothe your kids, decide how much pocket money they get or in general, dictate how they proceed through every minute of their life? That's what we call overprotective parenting. Kids need freedom and autonomy to a certain degree and when you invade their space every waking minute of their lives, they become frustrated, uncomfortable and hyperactive.
Signs and Symptoms of Child Hyperactivity
The hyperactive child symptoms and signs in kids are as follows-
Impulsiveness or a lack of self-control
Lack of focus and extremely short attention spans.
Interrupts conversations constantly and shares their thoughts aloud
Too much motor activity and exhibition of uncontrolled movements
Unable to sit still for a few seconds to minutes
How is Childhood Hyperactivity Diagnosed?
There are no specific signs or symptoms of hyperactivity since most pre-schoolers and young children are hyperactive to a certain degree. However, these are some ways your doctor may diagnose childhood hyperactivity-
Through the review of family and medical history
Asking daycare givers, pre-school teachers, and neighbours for daily reports
He may ask for a record of your child's daily activities and nutrition info
Through a behavioural therapy consultation
How Can You Deal with Your Hyperactive Child?
Here are some tricks and tips on how to control hyperactive child-
Take him for a walk - Walking not only rejuvenates the mind but also the soul. Besides losing weight and improving cardiovascular health, walking ensures that your child will stay in tip-top shape and also enhance his focus. Walking is a way to let loose his wandering mind and enjoy the scenery along the way as well.
Yoga And Meditation - Your child has abundant energy and a meaningful way to get him to calm down is to channel it in a positive direction. Yoga and meditation, when combined, will teach him how to channel that energy and live life mindfully. He will develop an awareness of his surroundings, stay focused in the present and finally, improve his attention span and long-term memory too.
Household Chores - Household chores may seem boring at first glance, but they can transform into a fun family activity when done together. Split your chores amongst your kids, be it gardening, mowing the lawn, cleaning the kitchen, cooking or whatever else you need running in the house. Doing household chores inculcates a sense of discipline, responsibility and improves self-esteem too!
Good Reads - Giving your children a collection of interesting books to read will foster their learning, memory and improve intelligence too. The more you learn, the more you grow but at the same time, you don't want to overwhelm them too much. Make sure you start off with a few books and let them pick one or two, to begin with. Once they finish, they can proceed to choose the next few ones.
Change Diet - Nutritionally speaking, ADHD and OCD can be cured to a certain extent (or totally in some cases) when you alter your child's diet. Make sure they skip processed foods, added sugars, salt and anything that comes packaged or looks unhealthy on the labels. Give them fresh organic home cooked meals that are free of preservatives and artificial flavours. Eating clean goes a long way towards improving mood, lifestyle, and overall physical and mental wellbeing.
Maintain Balance - Create a system of routines and rewards in the household that's a bit flexible in nature. You don't want to bore your kid to death by instilling sheer discipline and spoil his mood that way. Good parents know when to enforce consequences for failing to meet goals while spending enough time with their kids, on the other hand, to reinforce and remind them that they're still okay once they realize their mistakes. Be an authoritative parent, not an authoritarian or dictator-type one.
Never Neglect - Don't leave your kids all alone every day. Be involved with their schoolwork, daily activities and give them some of your attention which they so crave. Hyperactivity stems from receiving a lack of attention and by showing appreciation in moments when you catch them doing something good or productive, they calm down and are reassured of their efforts. Hyperactivity automatically goes away. Just make sure not to be too quick to judge and focus on the positives while ignoring the negatives.
Give Breaks - Don't deny them recess or breaks. When you let the feeling of hyperactivity being allowed in the classroom sink into them, they calm down and respond appropriately.
Allow Second Chances - Encourage the child to pay attention to detail and review their work before submitting or showing. Give second chances to them if they make mistakes and seem to be stumbling academically.
Talk To Them - Allow your child to talk about their feelings and share how they feel on a day-to-day basis. Give them closure and a sense of freedom in sharing their thoughts and expressions with you. Give them attention, basically.
Activities and Games to Keep Hyperactive Kids Busy
Here are a couple of activities and games to keep hyperactive kids busy-
Share Activities With Others - Assign a collaborative project with another kid in the classroom. By pairing the child up with a buddy, you reduce fidgeting and also increase their tolerance for working from a seated position.
Martial Arts - If your child's got excess energy, then it's time to put it to some good use. Enrol him in a Martial Arts class like Kung Fu or traditional Karate and watch him get fit, confident and calm in the process.
Give A Stress Ball - Stress balls are squishy and aid in developing their attention and focus. A stress ball is a wonderful way to tackle child sensory integration problems effectively.
Play Games - Whether it's indoors or outdoors, a little bit of gaming with your kids won't hurt. Try chess, ludo, Chinese checkers and UNO with them. If they're feeling a bit adventurous, then take it outdoors with games like table tennis, badminton, soccer, and cricket.
Swimming - Swimming is an amazing activity for hyperactive kids. It builds self-discipline, burns calories, provides room for constant movement and is fun too! Who knows? You may even have a professional athlete in the making as he masters the art of swimming and gets good at it.
Hyperactivity is a natural phase in children and sometimes we have to pay extra attention to it before it becomes a full-blown problem later in life. Remember these tips, be patient with your child, and you'll see results soon enough.

How to Choose Right Mutual Fund for Your Child
Many parents are seen opting for a mutual fund for child education as well as for any other purposes related to the child’s future. While you might be on-board with the idea of investing in mutual funds, it is quite natural to be clueless about how to proceed with it and make the investment in the right manner. A few tips in that regard can be quite helpful.
What are Mutual Funds?
Mutual funds are a type of investment where the collective investment from multiple personnel is used to buy specific debts or securities, based on the risk factors. The investment firms have brokers or managers to make these decisions that keep risk minimal and reap a high dividend.
Why Should You Invest in Mutual Funds for Children?
The costs of expenses that are incurred currently will keep on increasing in the coming years as a result of natural inflation and economic changes. By the time your child reaches the age of college education and setting up his own family, he would need some financial help to get started. Mutual funds can help you meet those needs easily with an investment that doesn’t burn your pocket.
How to Buy Best Mutual Funds for Your Child?
Having a good idea of how mutual funds can help you set up a better future for your child, the next step is to figure out how to begin with buying the mutual funds that are right for you. There are a few tips that can help you get started with it, as well as shape up the steps required ahead to keep it going.
1. Understand Your Motivation for the Investment
A general idea behind investing is to ensure that your child has a secure future. But that needs to be further broken down to the precise aspect you are attempting to secure. For some, it might be a plan to ensure the expenses of higher education are met. In other cases, you might want to keep a general reserve for any future medical expenses or travel or relocation-related costs that might be incurred as a result of your child’s decisions. This can help you decide how best to carry out the investment and the amount to allocate towards it.
2. Figuring Out the Time Duration Before Investment Maturity
Investment in mutual funds can begin at any stage of your life, as well as your child’s. But the key factor remains the motivation behind it, which also governs when you’d expect to have the money ready for your purposes. Some decisions might make it necessary to have the money available in the coming years, while a few parents might start off right in the child’s infancy, giving them ample time to keep investing. Both these approaches require choosing different kinds of funds to invest in so that your returns are received at the right time. Recently, there have also emerged target-based mutual funds offered by a few organizations, allowing you to specify a precise year to withdraw your investment.
3. Balance the Mutual Funds With Different Kinds of Investments
A common sense when it comes to the economics of investment is to never put all your eggs in one basket. There’s no doubt that mutual funds have some of the best dividends in the market when it comes to investments. But, the monetary needs can arise at any stage of life and it is best to have a variety of plans that allow you to use some amount of money, whenever you need. Furthermore, specific investments can provide a few advantages, too. A few college-specific savings plan in terms of mutual funds rule out the investment amount from tax calculations, giving you a substantial benefit. A bunch of other plans are meant for your retirement as well, with their maturity date well into the future.
4. Start Early By Setting Up a Mutual Funds Account Under Custody
It is required by law that an individual be at least 18 years old before opening an investment account. Setting up a mutual funds investment in the name of your child can be an issue if you are starting early. However, there is a workaround for this as well. You can start an account under joint ownership, choosing to include your name along with your child. Many investment firms offer this option but it is best to do this with a firm you know and a broker you share good relations with. Once your child is an adult, he can have full control over the account.
5. Make the Right Choice When Going With Any Company That Offers Investments
Today’s market is flooded with numerous firms and companies offering attractive investment plans, including ones with mutual funds. In the excitement of high dividends, it is quite easy to be defrauded or invest in a company that does not have a good backing. Don’t rush and spend enough time researching companies and brokers. Rely on personal contacts and talk to people who recommend somebody personally or have their own investments in the same company as well.
6. Understand the Significance of Investment Expenses
Mutual funds are a very unique type of investment model. When a mutual funds investment is set up, every investor that is a part of the investment needs to pay a certain fee, in order to reap the benefit of the dividends. Most early investors fail to take into account these fees, which can easily rack up a massive cost in the long run. Large fees can make it difficult to make the investments later on. Therefore, choose those with lower fees even if your dividends might be reduced by some amount.
7. Go for Mutual Funds That Are Diversified Substantially in Multiple Sectors
The way mutual funds work in providing dividends is by investing in securities. Certain mutual funds tend to invest heavily in a specific type of business and are usually opted by people who are well aware of that domain. But for most people, it is an intelligent decision to invest in diversified mutual funds. These make use of the investor money and distribute it in various securities at different proportions. Therefore, this is much safer than anything else, since if one security aspect fails, the other ones are already in place to compensate for those losses.
8. Opt for Mutual Funds That Adopt the Invest-And-Forget Approach
We usually have numerous other things in our lives that need our attention and responsibilities that need to be fulfilled. In the midst of all these, if you also have to pay attention to your mutual funds regularly, it can get quite stressful and taxing. Therefore, go with mutual funds that are secure, such as diversified mutual funds, which allow you to invest your amount and relax. Most investment brokers take the right decisions with the investments and they can help you choose the right one in this regard.
9. Figure Out the Right Capital You Can Invest In to Flag Off the Funds
In matters of mutual funds for young kids, it is necessary for parents to keep aside a substantial amount to kick off the mutual fund investment. This can then be taken care of by the children once they grow up. Even for the ones who are adults now, it is better to provide a lump sum amount that can act as an initial investment, which can be increased further in life. Pairing that with a retirement insurance plan or other investment structures can help you add additional amounts and keep the dividends at a good level.
10. Let Your Child Understand How Mutual Funds Work Once He Grows Up
While you have taken the right decision to start off a mutual funds account in your child’s name early on, you cannot keep taking care of it all your life. Once your child is an adult an ready to take control of the account, he needs to have a good understanding of how the investment works and make the best of it. Reaching close to the teen years, you can start educating your children along the basics of investments, making them aware of mutual funds as well. Numerous videos on the Internet or educational websites can provide additional understanding of the same concept. Try using a small amount of money and creating a mock investment to gauge their decisions.
Mutual Fund Child Plans and Its Key Features
When it comes to investing in mutual funds, there are a ton of plans you can choose from. Each has its benefits and shortcomings, based on your needs. However, there are certain child specific mutual funds plans that have great returns. A few of them might be a tad riskier than the other, and this can be easily compared with risk classifiers. Going with mutual fund child plans offer the benefits of some exciting features as well.
If an adult opens up a mutual funds account, any investments that occur have to be made from the bank account of the investor himself. No payments are accepted from any tertiary parties. However, a mutual funds account opened for a child usually allows third-party payments. This allows your relatives to contribute to the investments as well.
Many companies have combined the mutual fund investments for children with certain insurance plans as well. These can come in the form of an accident insurance, providing a major expense coverage bundled with your investment in the mutual funds.
Most of the mutual fund investments based on child plans come with a lock-in option as well. These ensure that the funds cannot be withdrawn until the child has turned 18 years old. While this can be a deal-breaker for some who intend to use those funds for other purposes, going for a lock-in could provide improved dividends as well.
Figuring out the plans of best mutual funds for the child can take some time with research and planning. Starting early is always in your benefit and having clear goals can help you come to a decision that can be agreed upon by you and your broker.

Taking Care of a Baby Is a Challenging Task, It's Complicated but Interesting
He is my first baby, so it seems very challenging to me. He is very sharp and naughty which is totally unexpected at this age as he is 6 months old now. All I can say it's a nice experience As time goes on his habits are changing. He is becoming more naughty. He starts playing when ever he wants, what ever the time it may be. If I scold him, he laughs. He plays at night hours. When I have work, he wakes up as early as possible. Its winter time but he doesn't want to wear a cap and warm clothes?. As he is 6months old now, it's a starting point for solid food, but he does not eat that food easily and cries a lot and plays pranks and sometimes blows all the food on my face?. He wants a new toy after every 10mins. After every 10mins he throws the toy even if it is very new for him. And even when daipering he won't get clam either he will turn or start playing and cycling with his legs. He gets bored with in a little span of time. He wants someone to carry him and show new place and new things. He gets cold very quickly, and I need to take care of him very much. I don't know why babies get very attached with their fathers as the entire day they are with mothers, and we are the ones who fulfil their basic needs like loving, caring, feeding, and moms do the playing and at last in the evening when the father comes back they change parties?. However, the baby is the love of a mother and for her baby is endless. That's called mother's love and I love my son so much??. I can say that nothing is easy neither giving birth nor baby caring. Giving birth to a baby itself is a very big blessing from God as everyone won't get such opportunities. Its a suggestion from my side to every mom, please take of your babies as a blessing, not a burden.

ABCs of potty training- A guide to stress-free life!!
Get it right- life can be quite easy but get it wrong, it's Messy!!
First of all –
yes, new moms or ‘to be moms’ readers… There is a thing called potty training –
get it right, and your life can by quite easy but get it wrong, it’s MESSY!!!Every mom has a
dilemma of how and by when she should start potty and toilet training of her
kid.There is no
thumb rule for this as every kid is different. But I want to share few ideas
which might help new moms about how to go for potty training.Every new mom
is scared and feels gross of the idea of cleaning the kid and changing diapers
all the time. I give the credit to my mom’s advice that helped me in completing
the potty training of my kid when he completed 1 year. I have never kept my kid
ever in diaper except when going out and in night. So as soon as
my kiddo started sitting (which was v early luckily: 4.5 months old), I bought
a small potty sheet of Fisher Price. It has some train music coming out of it.
So he was very fascinated about the music and the bright color of it. Whenever
I feel that my kid wants to poop, I made him sit over it, waited patiently,
talked to him, sing poems to him. In the beginning he was not comfortable as he
obviously didn’t know what to do after sitting on it. But if you make this a
daily habit, the kid will soon realize the use of potty seat. Sometimes it was
a fake call too, but I did this every time he signals to poop. After sometime,
when he started to crawl and make me understand things, he himself crawls to
the potty seat to let me know he wants to poop. Soon by 11 months he was fully
potty trained.Few key
takeaways from my experience which can be useful for everyone:
You really need to understand the
signs of kid from starting when they want to poop and do toilet. As you
give importance to their signs (which can be any sound or distress face),
they soon will recognize how they can relate the urge of doing with the
signs and will help them in signaling you as they grow.
Be patient – as with everything
else to do with the kids. You really need to sit patiently with the kid on
potty seat, make them comfortable, tell them the use of it, sing poems to
comfort them.
I used to take the potty seat out
of bathroom every time as he doesn’t like enclosed space of bathroom while
pooping. Also it helps me in sitting comfortably while I have to wait.
Try to buy an interesting potty
seat which has some sound, colors or cartoon on it and which has small
size for sitting as if you want to start very early, there are few potty
seats available in market with small area to sit. They will not feel
comfortable if it is very wide and they feel the risk of falling into it –
so buying a good and correct fit seat is critical.
Potty training should start as
early as possible when you feel your kid is ready to understand you. Since
the learning capacity of kid is very high in starting and as they grow
they get stubborn and resist change and they have all types of
distractions in their mind in later stage. BUT never force or put pressure
on them if they are not ready. Try after few days, they might accept it.
But never get disheartened and stop practicing it. The sooner you teach
them, the faster they learn.
Never feel gross of the term potty
while cleaning them. Make them understand why doing potty is good for
them.
Always make them wash their hands
after they are cleaned. This will help them in continuing with this habit
as they grow.
Toilet trainingI have also
been training him for toilet from starting. I used to take him to bathroom for
toilet every hour or depending his schedule as soon as he wakes up from his
sleep and as he signals he wanted to do toilet.Soon he gets
the habit of signaling me when he wanted to do toilet. The important thing
again I learnt is never ever ignore baby signals. This will really help them in
informing you as they grow. Even if the kid is wearing diaper and if they tell
you that he wants to do toilet, take him to bathroom (if its available) to do
it. Never ignore and tell them to do it in diaper.Night trainingMy kiddo has
started telling me that he wants to go to toilet when he was 9 months old. On
his first birthday, he was fully potty and toilet trained except in night. I
felt it too early to start night training so I waited for 4-5 months.Night training
was again a tricky task as I have to wake up in night so many times to check
him if he is wet and couldn’t feel to tell me. And also the clothes and bed is
going to get messy – so better get some mattress cover before you start this.
His sleep is going to be disturbed in night and he’ll be cranky in day. So you
really have to be patient for those months.I used to make
him do toilet before sleeping and talk to him in bed that he needs to tell me
in night if he wants to do toilet. Don’t make the kids drink more liquid stuff
like milk/water just before sleeping while starting this process. After every 2
hours I used to check him if he is wet and ask softly in his sleep if he wants
to do. He sometimes replied, sometimes not. Many times he found wet so I have
to change his clothes in night. I didn’t put dry sheets below him as I don’t
want him to feel conscious / differently from us before sleeping. After few
days or a month he started telling me in sleep that he wanted to do toilet, but
he used to speak in such a low volume I have to be fairly vigilant full night.
After 2-3 months, he was fully trained. We stopped using diapers while going
out too but we have to remind him so many times that you are not wearing diaper
and you have to inform us if you want to go to toilet. When he started
going to play school, and I have to again make him wear diaper during school
time as he might not tell to strangers and don’t want him to feel uncomfortable
in school before he settles down over there. But after few days, he disliked
the idea of wearing diaper and I could proudly say that my efforts did not go
in vein and those diapers have gone from his life when he turned 2.This is my
experience of the efforts I put in my kids potty training. Hope you guys find
some of the points worthy to apply. Pls comment if you like it and share your
experience as well.Enjoy Parenting
