20 Maths Puzzles for Kids
Mathematics is a subject that children often dread or find boring. However, maths does not have to be dull or intimidating. It can be a lot of fun if taught the right way. Here are 20 mathematical riddles for kids that will help children improve their maths skills in an interesting and enjoyable way.
Easy Maths Puzzles with Answers for Children
1. Ramesh turned 10 years old day before yesterday. By next year he will become 13. How is this possible?
Answer: This is one of the more amusing maths puzzles for kids age 6. With the help of math and a calendar, this puzzle can be easily explained.
For this puzzle to work, we need to assume that today is 1st January 2018. This means that Ramesh’s eleventh birthday was on 31st December 2017. Day before yesterday, he was 10 years old, today he is 11. By the end of the current year, 2018, he will be 12 years old. And so, by the next year (i.e. in 2019), he will be 13 years old.
2. What is the following number? 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, ______________
Answer: Here the pattern to be observed is: every successive number is greater by 3. So the sequence will be: 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48, and so on.
3. What is the following number? 53, 51, 49, 47, 45, 43, _______________
Answer: Here the pattern to be observed is: every successive number is smaller by 2. So the sequence will be: 53, 51, 49, 47, 45, 43, 41, 39, 37, 35, and so on.
4. Hari had 6 siblings who were born all born 2 years apart. The youngest is Richa who is only 7 years old while Hari is the oldest. What is Hari’s age?
Answer: Richa, the youngest sibling is 7 years old. Each sibling was born 2 years apart, and there are total seven children (Hari and his 6 siblings). So Hari's age is: 7 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 19.
5. Ravi used to live in a village that was next to the forest. One day he crossed paths with a genie. The genie was in a generous mood and granted Ravi one wish. Ravi, thinking it was a joke, wished for a 100 grams of gold. The genie agreed and behold! Ravi had a kilo of gold. Shocked and feeling upset that he asked for so little, Ravi requested the genie if he could ask for another wish. The genie agreed but only on one condition. The genie would come back next month on any date and Ravi would need to present him with gold rings. However, the gold rings had to be the same weight as the date on which he arrived. This means that if the genie came on the 20th, he would need 20 grams of gold. What did Ravi do next?
Answer: This is a challenging math riddle for kids as the date is unknown. If Ravi decided to make a different gold ring for each day, it will become problematic. This is because he only has a 100 grams of gold. So, if he made a gold ring of 31 grams,30 grams, 29 grams and 27 grams, he would run out of gold. The solution is to make just 5 rings of weight 1 gram, 2 grams, 4 grams, 8 grams and 16 grams. This can be used in combination to reach the number 31. For example:
24th day: 16+8
13th day: 8+4+1
7th day: 4+2+1
6. If Radha is the 50th fastest and slowest runner in her school, how many students are there in her school?
Answer: 99 students.
50th Fastest Calculation: If you count in sequence from 1, Radha comes 50.
50th Slowest Calculation: If you count in sequence from 99, Radha is again 50.
7. Wolves and Lambs Puzzles: Six Wolves can catch just six lambs in six minutes. So how many wolves will they need to catch 60 lambs in sixty minutes? Hint - the answer is not sixty.
Answer: 1 wolf can catch 1 lamb in six minutes. In 60 minutes, each wolf can catch 10 lambs. So, each wolf can catch ten lambs, and in sixty minutes, 6 wolves can catch 60 lambs. Another method - Six Wolves. How? 6 wolves can catch six lambs in 6 minutes. If you multiply it by ten, the same wolves can catch sixty lambs in 60 minutes.
8. How Many Cycles? This is another mathematical statement problem which can be solved using logic and arithmetic. Last weekend, Jack went to play in the park near his house. He rode the new bicycle gifted by his grandma on his birthday. After reaching the park, Jack saw that there were 14 tricycles and bicycles. If there were totally 38 wheels, how many tricycles were there in the park?
Answer: There were 10 Tricycles. There were 14 cycles in all, and all of them have at least 2 wheels. So, 14 x 2 = 28. Now there are 38 wheels totally, which means 38 - 28 = 10. So, this means there are 10 cycles with one extra wheel each, meaning 10 tricycles in all.
9. The principal is constructing a square playground for the children of her school. She wanted to fence the area with four exits around the playground so that the ground was accessible from all sides. If she used 27 poles on each side of the playground, how many poles would be needed in total?
Answer: 104 poles. The 4 corner poles will be common to two sides. Hence: (25 poles x 4 sides) + 4 corner poles= 104 poles
10. Monkey and Bananas: Another word problem that is fun for kids to solve. Assume there are, five monkeys and each one takes 5 minutes to eat 5 bananas. How many minutes would 4 monkeys take to eat 4 bananas? Again, how many monkeys would eat 30 bananas in 30 minutes?
Answer: Each monkey eats 5 bananas in 5 minutes, so 1 banana in 1 minute. So, if there are 4 monkeys and 4 bananas, they will take 1 minute only. On the other hand, if 30 bananas are being eaten in 30 minutes (i.e. 1 banana in 1 minute), this is the job of one monkey.
11. What weighs more - A kilo of apples or a kilo of feathers?
Answer: They weigh the same. Each weighs exactly a kilo.
12. Using only addition, how can you add eight 8's to get the number 1,000?
Answer: 888 + 88 + 8 + 8 + 8 =1,000
13. The ages of a father and son add up to 66. The age of the dad is the age of the son reversed. How old could they be?
Answer: There are three different answers for this: the father and son could be 51 and 15 years or 42 and 24 years old or 60 and 06 years old.
14. A genetic scientist engineered a new plant which could double its size every day. He made it grow in a circular pond with a circumference of 600 metres. If he planted it in the southern part of the pond, and the plant covered half the pond in 28 days, how many days would it take to cover the full pond?
Answer: 29 days. As mentioned in the beginning, the plant doubles in size every day.
15. If there are four apples and you take away three, how many do you have?
Answer: You took the apples so obviously you have three.
16. How many 9’s are there between 1 and 100?
Answer: 20. They are 9,19,29,39,49,59,69,79,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99
17. Draw a line. Without touching it, make this line shorter.
Answer: Draw a longer line next to it. This will make the first line seem shorter.
18. There are 2 buckets, a 5 litre and a 3-litre bucket. Fill the 5-litre bucket with 4 litres of water using just these two buckets to measure.
Answer: Fill the 5-litre bucket fully. Pour it into the 3-litre bucket until it is full. Empty the 3-litre bucket. Pour the remaining 2 litres into the 3-litre bucket. Fill the 5-litre bucket completely. Finish filling the 3-litre bucket. Now the 5-litre bucket is left with exactly 4 litres of water.
19. What do the numbers 88, 96 and 11 all have in common?
Answer: They look the same upside down and right side up.
20. Two fathers and two sons go fishing. Each of them catches one fish. So why do they bring home only three fish?
Answer: The fishing group comprises a grandfather, his son, and his son's son. So, there are just three people.

C-Section Delivery - What are the Benefits and Risks?
C-section delivery is a surgical process where the doctor makes an incision in the wall of the mother’s abdomen and in her uterus to deliver the baby. Most c-section deliveries are conducted when there are problems in the progress of labour. A c-section delivery can be a lifesaver in cases where there is a risk of complications in a vaginal birth.
Is it Safe to Have Caesarean Birth?
In the olden days it was believed that c-section deliveries pose more risks than vaginal births, but with the progress in the field of surgery, the process is now something which should not cause any apprehension. Although vaginal birth should be your first preference if there are no issues with your pregnancy or labour, a c-section is perfectly safe too.
A c-section birth is a necessity in cases where there is a danger to the mother’s or the baby’s life. In such cases it is a better option than vaginal birth for both the mother and the child. Also, c-section is the only option in cases where labour is induced but is not progressing, if the mother is carrying multiple babies, or if the baby is large.
While all operations have some risks involved, it is rare to have any serious complications in case of a first-time cesarean, especially if the operation is planned and the mother is healthy.
Advantages of C-Section
C-section may be the best option for you and your baby if your doctor has advised you to opt for it. Delivering through c-section has a few benefits over delivering naturally. The benefits of c-section over natural birth are:
Planned Delivery
If you have a planned C-section delivery, it will let you anticipate and arrange yours and the baby’s needs in advance.
No Fear of Tearing
C-section delivery may save you the worry about the tearing the area between the back passage, perineum and the vagina. However, labour pains exist during c-sections too and they are as intense as vaginal birth labour pains.
Less Discomfort
C-section delivery comes with its fair share of discomfort, but you are saved from the pain and bruises that occur between the perineum and the vagina in the case of a normal delivery.
Less Bleeding
Bleeding is comparatively less in the first few days after a C-section delivery.
Less Complaint of Leaking Wee
Women who deliver through C-section, complain less of leaking wee when they a cough or laugh.
Fewer Sexual Problems
Women who have a C-section tend to have less sexual problems because there are no cuts and stitches in the perineum and the vagina.
Fewer Chances Of Pelvic Floor Damage
C-section does not lead to pelvic floor damage, which may take place in the case of a vaginal delivery.
Fewer Chances Of Birth Trauma
The use of forceps is minimal in a C-section delivery, and thus, the chances of the baby suffering from birth trauma is also less.
Infections Are Not Transmitted
If the mother has diseases like HIV or if viral load is detected during pregnancy, c-section decreases the risk of the infection passing over from the mother to the baby.
Disadvantages of C-Section Delivery
It is also important to know the risks that a c-section delivery may pose for both the mother and the baby.
Disadvantages of C-Section for the Mother
C-section risks for a mother include the following:
Pain
C-section mothers need a lot of pain relief medication and may take longer to recover than mothers who deliver through a vaginal birth. After a c-section delivery, it is common for women to complain of pain in the wound(where the stitches are) and abdominal discomfort. Abdominal discomfort may sometimes last for more than a month.
Bleeding
During a c-section surgery, the mother may lose a lot of blood if the bleeding is more than normal. If there is heavy bleeding, there may also be a need for blood transfusion.
Infections After Surgery
Before going for a C-section operation, the mother is given antibiotics to lessen the chances of infections. However, infections may still occur and are a very common side-effect of a c-section delivery. The woman may find discharge and redness in the wound, and feel a lot of pain or notice the separation of the wound. This tends to happen more for women who are overweight or are diabetic. Endometritis is an infection in the lining of the uterus, and this leads to heavy and irregular bleeding or a smelly discharge, and sometimes causes fever after birth. Women may also develop a urinary infection caused by the catheter. The symptoms to look out for are a pain in the lower part of the tummy or the groin, high temperature and chills.
Blood Clots
Every surgery carries the risk of a blood clot. This can be fatal if the clot is in the lungs. If you notice shortness of breath, swelling and pain in the calf muscles or a cough, you need to seek immediate medical help. You will be asked to move around and take blood thinning drugs to reduce the risk of a blood clot.
Adhesions
Though not very common, adhesions are a risk of C-sections. These are bands of scar tissues that make the organs stick to each other in the stomach or to the wall inside the stomach, and can be very painful. They may also be the cause of some bowel problems and, in some cases, can cause fertility issues.
Anaesthesia
Anaesthesia administered during the operation can cause a severe headache, and in some cases also causes temporary nerve damage.
Subsequent Pregnancies
If you are pregnant after c-section, risks of another c-section are higher In most cases if a woman's first delivery is through caesarean surgery, subsequent deliveries also happen through c-section.
Mortality
The mortality rate of a mother is higher in the case of a c-section.
Disadvantages of C-Section for the Baby
There are a number of c-section risks to baby. Some of them are:
Breathing Problems
Some babies delivered through c-section may have breathing problems. The problem may not be serious, but the baby would need special care. It is more likely for babies that are born preterm or for babies who are born through caesarean section before labour starts.
Injury
In rare cases, the baby may get hurt by the doctor’s scalpel, though this usually heals.
Neonatal Care
The need to stay in neonatal care is higher among babies born through c-section than babies born vaginally.
Asthma
C-section risks for babies include a higher chance of asthma.
Stillbirth
The risk of stillbirth and infant mortality is higher in babies born through caesarean.
Other Complications of C-Section
A c-section delivery can cause a few other complications as well. These include:
The mother may need to be admitted to the intensive care unit for observation.
There have been very rare cases where a hysterectomy had to be performed to safeguard the mother’s health .
Due to complications after c-section, there may be a need for a further surgery after the operation.
In rare cases, the woman may sustain an injury in her bladder or her uterus.
Women who have had a c-section usually end up staying in the hospital longer
There may be physical problems like soreness and pain in the incision area
Breastfeeding may be delayed for women who have had a caesarean. This is because of the discomfort and pain in the abdomen .
Postpartum depression is higher in among women who deliver through caesarean..
Possible Effects of Caesarean Birth on Your Future
A C-section birth may affect future pregnancies in the following ways:
There might be complications like bleeding, abnormal foetal position, placenta previa or rupturing of the uterus along the previous scar in future pregnancies if the earlier pregnancy was a c-section delivery. Placenta previa leads to excess bleeding. Abnormal foetal position can make labour hard for a mother who is attempting to deliver normally after a c-section delivery. If the uterus ruptures, it may prove to be fatal.
Urinary tract infections and infections in the bladder are more common among mothers who have delivered through C-section previously.
Sexual dissatisfaction: The time to heal after a c-section can be long which can reduce a woman's interest in sexual activity. She may also have pain or tenderness at the incision site.
A woman who has had one c-section is more likely to have a caesarean delivery in all her future pregnancies.
The risk of having a low-lying placenta increases in future pregnancies and the complication leads to excess blood loss and a need for blood transfusion in the next pregnancy.
The chances of stillbirth increase in future pregnancies.
While the chances of c-section deliveries in future pregnancies increase, it is by no mean the only option available to an expectant mother. VBAC or vaginal birth after caesarean is possible for women who have no complications in their second delivery. A woman who had a caesarean delivery because the baby was in a breech position is more likely to have a VBAC than someone who could not deliver normally and had to opt for a c-section even after she was completely dilated and had started pushing. If you want to weigh your options after the first c-section, consult a doctor, and make a list of hospitals that support VBAC.
An unplanned c-section delivery can be a lifesaver for both mother and child. While a vaginal delivery is what most mothers hope for, it is important to understand that a c-section delivery is safe too. Read more

My Journey of Motherhood - How Motherhood Has Changed Me
First of all happy motherhood to everyone !!!
I was thrilled when I got to know that I am pregnant. I started loving my baby and looked for baby care books. I read articles on healthy diet, breastfeeding and baby care etc., I prayed, wished and hoped to have a healthy baby. I had a natural birth and the day my baby was born; it felt miraculous. The moment I looked at him that moment became so special to me. I had no idea that I can feel like this for anyone in this world.
I wanted to give best to my baby so I exclusively breastfed my baby till 6 months and I am weaning now in addition to breast milk.
The gift of becoming a mother has made me stronger, more compassionate, and selfless in so many ways. I can say motherhood has changed me completely. I was an outgoing person who used to hate sitting at home, and now I don’t crave to go out. There are days when I don’t even get out of the house. I no longer have a sensitive stomach. I have to be ready for whatever my baby throw at me and not get squirmish about it and if I was in the middle of eating, not lose my appetite. Sometimes when changing my baby's diaper, he moves too much and then oops I just got it on my hands or dress. I learned to laugh more and be quick on my feet. These are learning opportunities for me, and I quickly learned what cleaning products works bests for every situation. I have become more giving, patient in every pursuit.
Whatever I do, wherever I go, I have "Johith" in my mind throughout. If I am going out shopping, I look for baby shops, or if it is a holiday, I research whether the place is suitable for my son.
Sometimes I did not get enough sleep. But when I realised that my baby loved me as much as I loved him. He has shown me what unconditional love is. That was pure happiness, and it motivates me to keep going.
Spending time with my baby is priceless. I am happy to watch him grow, and I can’t believe he is already one year old. A single word can not explain how a mother feels for her child. Being a mother, I would say, is the best job in the world. I will push through every hard thing life throws at me because I want to give my son the best life I can. My goal is to raise my son to be a good, kind, strong and successful person.
