Pinworms in Babies
Children are often susceptible to many illnesses as they grow up. Pinworms in toddlers and babies are very common but can be easily treated. The intestinal parasite that causes a pinworm infection is also called as threadworms or seatworms; they affect adults and children alike, but the infection doesn’t take long to clear out.
What is a Pinworm Infection?
To break it down for you, pinworms are small white-coloured worms that can range in length from 2mm to 13mm long. They look very similar to dental floss or very thin white cotton thread (hence called threadworms). They are highly contagious through direct contact with objects or persons that are contaminated with either the worms or its eggs.
How Does Pinworm Infection Spread?
Once your child has been infected, the female worms get right to work while your baby is sound asleep. The worms enter the intestinal tract, latch on to the skin surrounding the colon and around the rectum and lay eggs.
The eggs of pinworms can survive outside the human body for up to three weeks. It is hence very easy for a healthy person to catch the infection if someone in the family has it. Extreme measures need to be adopted to prevent this: while a quarantine may not be possible, it is strongly advised to not share and touch any belongings of the affected person. Also, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly, with a strong antiseptic soap, after you are done tending to the affected person.
Causes of Pinworm in Infants
Infants will easily catch a pinworm infection if an adult in the same household has also got it. Here's how it might happen:
Being in direct contact with any contaminated object.
Ingesting food that may be contaminated.
Breathing in the eggs that might be latched on to clothes or sheets. This can happen when the infected item is being shaken.
Itching, especially around the anal region, could cause your child to pick up pinworm eggs through their fingernails.
Symptoms of Pinworm in Babies
Parents, if you’re doubtful that your baby has contracted pinworms, look out for these signs and symptoms.
Disturbed sleep and fussiness caused due to itching around the anal region.
Bacterial infection increases the chances of pinworms due to excessive itching that causes skin breakage around the anal region.
In girls, pinworms can affect the vagina causing vaginal itching and/or discharge.
In some cases, excessive pinworms infection in the intestine can lead to nausea and vomiting. Pinworms can cause nausea and vomiting in rare cases.
The chance of appendicitis, which is extremely rare, could occur due to the blockage of the appendix by pinworms.
If you notice any other severe symptoms, consult your child’s paediatrician immediately.
How are Pinworms Diagnosed?
Here are some ways in which you can inspect your baby if you suspect a pinworm infection:
Use a flashlight to check around the anal region. Since the worms lay eggs at night, checking in the morning is ideal.
Checking the surface of your child’s faeces or the vaginal tip can prove helpful.
Using transparent tape, gently press around the anus to see if your child has been infected. Since pinworm lay eggs around that region, it will be easy to identify the infection.
Pinworm Treatment for Babies
In the case of your child contracting Pinworms, you should look out for symptoms like itching and disturbed sleep. A serious infection can lead to severe problems, so to getting it under control is the main priority.
The doctors will suggest the following procedures for your child and family just to be on the safer side. It is essential to follow them diligently.
Drugs: Consumption of 'over the counter' medications like Mebendazole, Pyrantel or Albendazole to eliminate the pinworms is common. However, check with your paediatrician for a suitable dose.
Repetition: Since the medication will kill pinworms in a week, the course must be repeated two weeks later to kill any pinworms that may have hatched from the eggs laid earlier.
Tips to Follow if Your Baby Has Pinworm
It is not always recommended to opt for allopathy to treat babies. Here are few other things you can try:
As instructed by the paediatrician, follow the medical treatment for your little one.
Every morning, ensure your child is bathed as this will help in the removal of the eggs laid overnight.
During a diaper change, ensure you wipe and clean your baby thoroughly every time.
Keep your surroundings clean to prevent recurring infection. Cleaning the house and washing all clothes, sheets, and towels in hot water can kill Pinworms and its eggs.
Disinfect your child’s toys with soap and hot water.
Since pinworm eggs are sensitive to sunlight, ensure that all your curtains and blinds are drawn to bring in plenty sunlight.
Effective Home Remedies for Pinworm in Babies
There are home remedies for pinworms in your toddler when they are infected that can help your little one. Just ensure to check for allergies before you can implement them.
Garlic: Garlic has the potential to eliminate pinworms inside your baby’s intestinal tract.
Grapefruit seed extract: is known to regulate bowel movements, aiding in properly flushing out the pinworms from your child’s system
Coconut oil: has antibacterial and antiviral properties that are a good remedy to help with your child’s pinworm infection
Pinworm Infection Follow Up
Pinworm infections may recur. You may try home remedies, but it is also suggested that your child is properly dewormed and is take for a checkup with their paediatrician.
What Happens if Pinworms in Babies are not Treated?
Since a pinworms infection is a serious one, especially in toddlers, it must be treated immediately. If not, they have repercussions such as the following:
Itching and rashes around the anal region
Vaginal itching and discharge
Diarrhoea
Bedwetting
How to Prevent Pinworm in Infants?
Cleanliness can help prevent pinworms. Keeping your child’s nails short and clean can do the trick.
Bathing in the morning can help get rid of the eggs laid overnight.
Keep track of your child’s diaper and underwear. Changing diapers at regular intervals and daily change of underwear is a must.
Get plenty of sunlight into your child’s room and around the house. It helps eliminate pinworm eggs.
Try and prevent your child from biting their nails or sucking their fingers.
Keep your hands clean as Pinworms is a contagious infection. Washing your hands constantly.
Ensure your child’s hands are washed before eating and after using the toilet.
During the recovery period, ensure you wash all clothes, linens, and towels in hot water.
Toilet seats must be cleaned on a daily basis to prevent worsening the pinworm infection.
Ensure that your child is infection free before they can interact with any other children.
There are many infections your child can pick up, and Pinworms can cause a lot of discomfort in your child. It must be treated as the earliest with all the necessary precaution and remember prevention is always better than cure!

Does Ovulation Occur during Pregnancy?
When keeping yourself up to date with various aspects around pregnancy, you may come across scenarios or articles in various magazines or on the internet, which talk about a woman getting pregnant with another child when she was already pregnant with one. Rarely does anyone take this seriously, but it might make a question arise in your mind does ovulation occur during pregnancy in real life? Does that mean you will have more than one baby?
Can a Woman Ovulate During Pregnancy?
A straightforward answer to the possibility of ovulation while being pregnant is a simple no. In scientific terms, ovulation is the process where the ovaries release an egg during a menstruation cycle. This egg then makes it away through the fallopian tube and, if a sperm is present there, it will end up being fertilized by it. A fertilized egg then finds its way to the uterus where it awaits an implantation by removal of the outer lining. This shedding of the lining is what constitutes your period.
When you are already pregnant, the body is aware of this and does not undertake any processes to release the egg or proceed with ovulation. The uterus, tubes and ovaries all form part of the same system, so the presence of an embryo automatically triggers these processes to shut down. The uterine lining is held in its place to support the growing baby and you won’t have any more periods during your pregnancy.
What If The Ovulation Test Shows a Positive Result?
Despite this science, you might come across various cases in magazines or articles or you might experience one yourself that shows you that you were ovulating even when you are pregnant. This usually happens when the ovulation test turns out positive and later tests reveal that you are already pregnant.
One thing that ought to be remembered is that, just like a pregnancy test, the ovulation tests, too, work on the presence of a hormone. These tests do not actually check whether the ovaries are releasing an egg or not. And since hormones undergo a substantial change when pregnancy sets in, those levels might be a little too high, triggering the test to reveal positive result for ovulation.
Therefore, a presence of a positive result to your ovulation test might purely be a result of hormonal fluctuations or even a fault test for that matter. In certain cases, your body might just be on the verge of getting pregnant or, unfortunately, on the verge of a miscarriage.
What If You Had Period while Pregnant?
Along with ovulation, another worry that might plague pregnant mothers is to wonder whether a period can occur while you are pregnant. This, too, does not have any basis in science. Periods, as mentioned earlier, are a result of shedding the lining of the uterus since there is no fertilized egg to house in it. Once you are pregnant, the uterus lining needs to stay put so that the embryo has the support to grow safely and develop into a proper foetus.
That being said, there are chances you might spot a few drops of blood or light bleeding while you are pregnant. But this is quite different from the blood you usually see in your menstrual cycles and this bleeding is a result of many other factors. If the bleeding does feel thick and unusual, it might be an indication of a problem and it is necessary to let your doctor know immediately about it.
Ovulation while being pregnant is not a possibility since our biological processes are oriented in such a way to shut off the ovulation cycle once the uterus has a fertilized egg to take care of. The only way to absolutely be sure of an ovulation is to undergo intensive tests that check for multiple follicles or ultrasounds that determine if an egg has been released. The usual ovulation tests measure hormonal levels, which can very easily fluctuate during pregnancy. Therefore, it is best to put this question to rest and enjoy your newfound pregnancy with zest.

Eating Prawns During Pregnancy- Is It Safe?
Craving some delicious prawn dishes? Butter garlic prawns, prawn curry, stir-fried prawns dipped in sauce, prawn biryani, pepper prawns. The list goes on. Prawns belong to the crustacean group of sea creatures and are delicious. However, with many people suffering from allergic reactions to prawns, one wonders if eating prawns is safe during pregnancy.
Is it Safe to Eat Prawns When Pregnant?
While some seafood needs to be avoided during pregnancy, prawns are generally safe when procured from a non-polluted source and cooked thoroughly. However, during pregnancy, moderation is the key for every food you add to your list. Consuming prawns in excess or not adhering to certain precautions while consuming prawns can lead to adverse effects during pregnancy. In case of doubt, always consult your doctor before the consumption of any food item.
Health Benefits of Eating Prawns
Apart from being delicious, prawns are packed with minerals and vitamins essential for mommies-to-be.
Packed With Proteins
Prawns are an excellent source of proteins during pregnancy. Protein-rich foods help in stabilising blood sugar levels and keep gestational diabetes in check. Being low in calories and fat content, prawns will help you gain healthy muscle mass.
Rich in Vitamins
Prawns are a rich source of Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc, choline, iodine, copper, and phosphorus. Essential to improving immunity, thyroid function, and brain development, they are also helpful in the development of bones and teeth.
Rich in Other Nutrients
Prawns contain nutrients that are readily absorbed by our body and essential for our body to protect and heal itself. Selenium is an antioxidant that helps fight cell damage and protects against certain cancers. Amino acids help regenerate new cells and repair damaged cells. Astaxanthin has anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties. Prawns are rich in all these nutrients.
Low in Calories
During pregnancy, it is essential to gain healthy weight and get adequate nutrition. Prawns are low in calories and, thus, a healthier choice to add nutrition without consuming unnecessary fat.
Rich in Omega 3
This fatty acid is found abundantly in prawns. Studies have shown that it helps in developing the eyes and nerve connections in the foetus.
Should Prawns Be Avoided in Pregnancy?
As we just discussed, consuming prawns during pregnancy has several health benefits. However, it is still recommended that you check for the risks associated with consumption of prawns or any seafood with your doctor. If you are still unsure, start with small amounts and see how your body reacts to it. Your diet can then be changed accordingly. In any case, practice moderation and do not go overboard with any food. If your body accepts it, prawns can be very nutritious and healthy for both you and your baby.
Some pregnant women may face the risk of prawn allergy during pregnancy. Here are some risks associated with prawns during pregnancy and information on whether you need to be on your guard:
Cholesterol: Prawns are a rich source of cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol, prawns may not be good for you or for the health of your unborn baby.
Allergy: If you have shown allergic reactions to a similar group of food, it is advisable to keep away from prawns. They can cause reactions that include abdominal pains, itchiness, rashes, and inflammation.
Mercury poisoning: Water pollutants and increased levels of toxic chemicals can create health problems if you consume prawns sourced from polluted waters. Prawns can absorb the pollutants into their body. Seawater prawns may contain a high level of mercury that can adversely affect the development of the baby’s nervous system. Contaminated river or lake waters contain high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and pose a health risk to you and your baby.
Infection: It is always recommended that you consume cooked prawns when pregnant. Raw or undercooked prawns are extremely harmful and associated with multiple health risks like blood poisoning, food poisoning, or other harmful infection to your baby.
Tips While Eating Prawns When Pregnant
Always buy prawns from reliable and trusted sources. Ensure that they are thick and glossy; do not buy discoloured prawns or ones with shrunken eyes.
Avoid raw seafood preparations like sushi during pregnancy. Dried prawns during pregnancy are fine if they are thoroughly cleaned and cooked.
If you don’t have an option of fresh prawn, opt for good quality frozen ones and defrost them before cooking.
Ensure that they are cleaned properly before cooking. You may cook them with or without the shell. Cooking with veins or deveining them is a personal preference.
Clean and cook them thoroughly. Signs of well-cooked prawns include a red shell and pearly white or opaque flesh. You can soak them in a bowl of lukewarm salted water for about 10 minutes and wash them well.
Avoid restaurant served seafood.
Steam or sauté them till they are completely cooked. Make sure that the meat is firm and bouncy.
As long as prawns are eaten in moderation during pregnancy and sourced from reliable sources, there are unlikely to be any complications. If you experience any signs of discomfort or an allergy, immediately consult your doctor.

My Breastfeeding Experience - Some challenges and a lot to embrace!
Like all others, as a first-time mother, there were myriad of questions
and inhibitions in my mind about yet-to-arrive baby, feeding patterns,
late-night sittings, diaper woes, sleepless nights, health and what not! But,
once the baby was handed over to me, something miraculous happened and an
unknown motherly feeling engulfed me which I never knew existed inside of me
and I could instantly relate to the saying - “The moment a child is born the
mother is also born.” My heart was already attached to hers and her touch already melted
me to the core. As my daughter was born earlier than expected via C-section, I had to
face a lot of challenges in latching her because of low breastmilk supply. That
broke my heart! I could not see her crying of hunger therefore shifted her to
formula milk, but alongside kept latching her and used a breast pump. In the
beginning, it used to take hours to pump out a few millimetres of milk and when
I got tired, my partner used to help. I took nutrient rich diet as per the
requirement and suggested by the doctors, tried different positions to feed
her, took her to a separate room to feed, held her in my lap frequently and did
everything else which I could. And because of all these efforts and continuous
support from my partner, I was able to feed her for up to 6 months. Then we
shifted her to formula feed and continued giving her the same till the age of 2
years as still we were not sure about any other kind of milk (cow or buffalo).
We did not miss any recommended vaccinations and visited the paediatrician
regularly to check her overall growth and development. Today, she is 6 years
old healthy, grown-up child with all the quick and witty replies. After going through the whole new challenge of
breastfeeding the baby without compromising either of our health, following are
the takes I want to share with all new breastfeeding mothers who may or may not
face similar circumstances –
Include foods that will boost breastmilk
production like fenugreek, cumin, carom seeds, almonds, garlic, fennel
seeds, cinnamon, milk, etc.
Avoid alcohol, too many caffeinated drinks,
chocolate, spicy and gas-causing foods.
Wear comfortable clothing and use the right
kind of nursing bra.
Use less of breast pump and latch baby frequently
as supply depends on the demand.
Do not stress and remain happy with good
thoughts.
Breastfeed from both the sides.
Take help from your partner and do not feel
pressured.
Find a comfortable place to feed and keep
everything needed handy while breastfeeding.
Eat well with plenty of fluids.
Do not hesitate to share your thoughts with
your partner and family to get emotional support.
Though there is no
substitute for mother’s milk, at the same time, if it is not produced
sufficiently, due to medical or any other reason, do not feel dejected and lose
hope. After delivery, the mother already has to go through a lot, emotionally
and physically, and contemplating on uncontrolled situation/s will affect not
just both of you, but everyone around. Motherhood is an exquisite feeling, so
admire and savor every little moment with your child. Read more
