6 Different Types of Delivery Methods You Must Know
Bringing a baby into this world is a monumental feat and cannot be achieved easily. Although normal vaginal delivery is commonly referred as the typical way of birthing, New techniques help labouring women in many ways, either by dampening their pain or smoothening the delivery process. . Advancements in medical sciences have discovered various methods so that delivery can be made successfuleven in the face of any complications or risks
Most Common Types of Childbirth Options
Expecting mothers can look forward to the following delivery options.
1. Vaginal Delivery
When a baby is born through the birth canal of a woman’s body, the delivery is termed as a vaginal delivery. It may or may not be assisted with epidurals or painrelieving medication. The exact time of birth cannot be predicted in such a case, but most vaginal births tend to happen once 40 weeks of pregnancy have been completed.
Most doctors recommend a vaginal birth if there is a possibility for it and advise against going for caesarean delivery. During the stress of labour pains, the baby secretes hormones for the development of its brain and lungs; moreover, passaging through the birth canal squeezes the baby’s chest to clear all amniotic fluid and expand its lungs effectively. For mothers planning to have multiple children, vaginal births are highly recommended. When done with an incision above the anal area, the procedure is called episiotomy.
With vaginal deliveries, mothers can recover from the stress of deliveryquicker and return home sooner with their babies. The chances of infection in such cases are lower than others. The baby too has a lower chance of suffering from any breathing problems if born via the vagina.
2. Natural Childbirth
This is one of the types of birth that is steadily gaining popularity. In this method, there are no medical procedures or invasive therapies involved, and the process takes place in the most natural manner possible. This is mostly a personal choice and the mother needs to be committed throughout the way.
Various exercises and positions are taken into account while carrying out delivery in natural ways. A midwife usually stays with the mother to ensure the delivery is successful and the mother is in good spirits. The delivery can take place at the hospital or even at home, with all preparations done beforehand.
Water birthing or pool birthingwith the help of upthurst ( buoyancy ) pressure of water can alleviate labour pain in this procedure. Water birthing is the most natural and painless way of bringing new life to the world.
Natural birth can be extremely empowering for a mother. Having skin-to-skin contact with the baby immediately after delivery can foster a strong bond between the mother and the child. It also triggers hormones in the body that start producing milk in the breasts right away.
3. Caesarean Section
Things don’t always go according to plan. A mother might want to undertake vaginal delivery but if complications arise, caesarean delivery is an option that might have to be taken.
In this method, the baby is delivered by opening up the abdomen of the mother and surgically opening the uterus to remove the baby. The name is derived from the Latin word ‘caedare’, which means ‘to cut’. Hence, this type of the cut is called a C-section - thats how the delivery method gets its name.
Many mothers decide to have a caesarean delivery in advance, which allows the hospital and doctors to start making preparations accordingly. This could be out of choice or even after a sonography has revealed certain parameters which make it necessary to undertake a C-section, such as the presence of twins or triplets, breech or transverse presentation, or a very large baby.
In other cases, if vaginal delivery fails even after a good trial of labour or if any complication arises, such as breech position while delivering , meconium stained liquor or obstruction in the birth canal, the doctors will have to quickly resort to undertaking a C-section and removing the baby out of the uterus in time.
4. Forceps Delivery
This is a rather peculiar type of delivery method and is required in certain cases of vaginal birth. This is anassistance to the usual vaginal delivery when the baby is on its way via the birth canal but fails to fully emerge out. This could be because of small obstructions, or the mother being tired and exhausted and hence being unable to push the baby out.
In these cases, the doctor makes use of specially created tongs which resemble forceps, and inserts them slowly into the birth canal. These are then used to gently grab the baby’s head and guide it outwards through the canal.
5. Vacuum Extraction
Similar to the forceps delivery method, this delivery technique is used in the case of a vaginal birth. For example, if the baby is on its way out but has stopped moving further down the canal, the vacuum extraction method is applied.
The doctors make use of a specialized vacuum pump which is inserted up to the baby via the canal. The vacuum end has a soft cup which is placed on the top of the baby’s head. Vacuum is created so that the cup holds the head, and the baby is gently guided outwards through the canal.
6. Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)
Most of the time, once a woman has had a caesarean delivery, her chances of having a vaginal delivery after that are pretty much nullified. But in recent times, certain techniques are making it possible for women to have successful vaginal deliveries even after the previous delivery method hsa been a C-section. This is termed as vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC).
Small hospitals do not opt for VBAC since an emergency C-section requires more staff and resources which may not always be possible. Also, any previous complications during delivery or any conditions faced by the mother could make the doctor advise against a vaginal delivery.
Birthing techniques have their own advantages and disadvantages,. The focus should always be on ensuring that the baby is delivered safely, the baby comes out healthy into the world, and the mother stays safe throughout the entire process of delivery. When it comes to a delivery method you want to choose versus one that your doctor recommends for you, it is always best to go with the doctor’s recommendation to avoid any complications in the future.

Delightful Thanksgiving Stories for Children
Here are some thanksgiving stories that can help your kid to learn more about kindness and gratitude:
1. Pumpkin Pie
This is one of the short funny thanksgiving stories that you can narrate to your kids that will not only amuse them but also teach them about thanksgiving values.
The story revolves around an eight-year-old girl named Sally who lived in the countryside with her family. Being away from the city, the family seldom had guests over from the city. One day Sally’s father announced that he would be bringing two guests for Thanksgiving supper on his way back from work. The mother was busy the entire day to prepare the festive meal, while Sally helped in cleaning the house. The guests arrived in the evening, and everyone settled to enjoy the festive feast. After relishing the turkey cooked by Sally’s mother, it was time to enjoy the delicious pumpkin pie! Sally carved out the first slice and served it to her dad, which the dad passed on to one of the guests. Sally was amazed at her father’s gesture and cut out another piece and again served it to her father. This time again the father passed on the slice to another guest. This time Sally snapped at her father and said, “Don’t worry father, I will not serve a smaller slice to the guests as I have carved all the slices in the same size’’. Everyone had a big smile on their faces.
2. The Other Side
This is the story of thanksgiving for preschoolers that can be narrated to older kids also to teach them about helping others.
A blind boy was sitting on the stairs of a building holding a sign that read “Please help me, I am blind”. Next to him lay an inverted hat with few coins in it. The people kept going up and down the building stairs, some put coins in the hat others simply crossed him without noticing. After some time a man walked up to the boy, put a coin in the hat and took the sign from the boy. The boy could hear the man scribble something on the sign. The man handed back the sign to the boy. After the man left, there was more clinking of coins in the hat. To the boy’s surprise, people were putting more coins than before. The next day again, the boy came and sat down on the building stairs. As some time passed, he could hear familiar footsteps that approached him. The boy asked the man, “Hello sir, are you the same gentleman who wrote something on my signboard yesterday?”The man said that indeed it was he who did that. The boy wanted to know what changed everyone’s perception and why everyone started giving him more money than before. The man said that he simple strike out the old message and wrote, “It is a beautiful day and l cannot enjoy like all of you!” The man patted the boy’s back as he left a coin in his hat. The boy thanked him for his help and kindness.
3. The Thanksgiving Story
This can be a first thanksgiving story for kindergarten kids that can help them know about the importance and significance of this festival of gratitude and kindness.
A long time ago in the year 1620, a whole bunch of people embarked on a journey to find a place where they could live in peace and harmony and worship whoever they wished to. These people were known as pilgrims. As they sailed on the boat called Mayflower for days, they finally landed in America at Plymouth. They soon started settling down by building homes and also began searching food sources. As winter set in, many pilgrims died because of harsh weather conditions. Squanto, an Indian came to their rescue and taught them how to sow corn plants and other such kinds of crops. The harvest was bountiful and they not only had enough to eat but they stocked up for the coming winters. The people were elated and decided to celebrate. A day was declared for offering prayers and thanksgiving by Governor Bradford. Indians were also invited in the merrymaking as everyone indulged in a three-day long festival of fun and frolic.
4. Cold Turkey
A funny thanksgiving story for toddlers and older kids that also gives away a meaningful message in the end.
One fine morning, a few days before Thanksgiving, Bobby went to a nearby supermarket store. As he was venturing between the aisles and browsing different products, he suddenly collapsed. The fellow shoppers quickly gathered around him to help him as he was lying there unconscious. His condition started deteriorating when the blood started oozing from his ears and his face started turning white. The medical team arrived soon at the scene and examined the young boy. The team removed his hat, and to everyone’s surprise, there was a frozen turkey hidden inside his hat. It didn’t take much time for everyone to guess that the boy was trying to steal the frozen turkey under his hat, which numbed and chilled his brains and caused this condition. The manager was present at the scene too. Looking at the innocent and scared face of the boy, the manager decided not to take any action and he also handed over the thawed turkey to the boy. After a couple of days, the manager received a letter from Bobby that contained his apology, and he also expressed his gratitude towards the manager’s generosity. The manager had a grin on his face as he also found 15 dollars in envelop, which was the cost of the turkey that Bobby tried to steal.
5. The Story of The Ears of Wheat
This ancient German folklore talks about giving importance and value to food.
Once there lived an older woman with her granddaughter in a quaint village in Germany. She once told her granddaughter how long time ago, the wheat ears were not as scanty as they were in the present times. Rather they had more than 40 to 50 ears and the entire plant used to be flooded with wheat ears. It was a kind of blessing from God, but humans could not value it. The granddaughter asked the reason for the same. The grandmother said it happened because it was believed that once a woman and her daughter were walking along the wheat field and the daughter slipped and fell down in a puddle that spoiled her clothes. The panicked mother snatched some of the wheat ears and started cleaning her daughter’s dress with it. As the woman was cleaning her daughter, an angel happened to pass through the field and saw the entire scene. The angel was shocked to see how humans were valuing their blessings. The angel cursed and said that the wheat crops would no longer bear any ears as humans are not worthy of such blessings and riches. On learning this, all the peasants came down on their knees to ask for forgiveness, but the efforts went into vain. The peasants then urged that not for them but for the sake of innocent birds, the curse should be revoked. The angel took pity but revoked only partial curse, and thus the wheat ears became scantier than before.

Hypothyroidism in Kids: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
The thyroid gland is one of the most important glands in the human body, and plays a vital role in your overall development. Proper functioning of the thyroid is essential for the growth of a child, and a thyroid deficiency can lead to multiple disorders.
What Is Thyroid?
The thyroid is a butterfly shaped, ductless gland which is located in the neck. The gland secretes hormones such as the Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine, which are responsible for ensuring proper growth and development, maintaining normal heart rate to control body weight, and regulating the body temperature.
What Are The Types Of Thyroid Disorder?
At times, the thyroid gland might not function properly, resulting in an imbalance of hormone production, leading to a thyroid disorder. Thyroid disorders can be of two basic types:
Hypothyroidism –
This condition is caused by the dip in thyroid hormones in the blood. Hypothyroidism is known to affect women more than men and can get severe with age.
Hyperthyroidism –
This refers to an increase of thyroid hormone in the blood because of an overactive thyroid gland.
What Is Hypothyroidism?
As discussed, hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder where the thyroid gland is underactive and does not produce enough hormones required for the proper functioning of the body.
Types of Hypothyroidism
The condition can, in turn, be divided into two types. These include:
1. Congenital Hypothyroidism
This is a thyroid disorder which occurs when the thyroid gland does not develop or function properly prior to birth. This is a common problem which can be diagnosed during the newborn screening process. The doctor will determine the course and length of treatment for this disorder based on factors like the child’s health and history of this disorder in the family.
2. Autoimmune Hypothyroidism: Chronic Lymphocytic Thyroiditis
This condition is caused by an autoimmune disorder known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis and occurs when the child’s thyroid gland is attacked by the immune system. This results in damage and decreased functioning of the thyroid gland.
3. Latrogenic Hypothyroidism
This occurs when the thyroid gland stops producing thyroid hormones in children after being medically destroyed or removed surgically.
4. Central Hypothyroidism
This is a condition where the brain does not make the thyroid stimulating hormone (the signal that tells the thyroid gland to work). The abnormal development of the hypothalamus or pituitary glands can cause central hypothyroidism.
Who should be screened for hypothyroidism?
Thyroid screening should be performed in the following cases:
Children who fail the thyroid tests in the new-born screening
Children who have poor linear growth
Children with history of abnormal development or brain injury
Children who have undergone cranial irradiation as a part of treatment for cancer
Children with symptoms of hypothyroidism such as fatigue or weight gain
Pregnant women who have had family history of thyroid disease
Causes Of Hypothyroidism In Kids
In children, the condition can be congenital or acquired after birth. It can also be caused due to autoimmune diseases, radiation therapies, removal of the thyroid gland, or due to the side effects of medication. Although such cases are rare, the disease can also be caused due to the treatment received for hyperthyroidism.
Sign and Symptoms Of childhood hypothyroidism
The symptoms are usually subtle and resemble symptoms of other medical conditions. The condition can go undetected for many years because of its non-specific nature.
Following are the symptoms of hypothyroidism:
Fatigue
Weight gain
Slower reaction time
Constipation
Frequent instances of cold
Dull facial expression
Swollen and puffy face
Droopy, tired eye-lids
Sparse, dry and coarse hair
Slow pulse and heart rate
Frequent muscle cramping
Poor growth
Since these symptoms can be associated with a large number of medical conditions, a doctor should be consulted to find out the real cause of these symptoms in children before opting for treatment for hypothyroidism.
Diagnosis and Tests
Here are some of the tests available to identify hypothyroidism in children:
Thyroid functioning screening
Anti-thyroid antibody level studies
Nuclear medicine uptake and scan
Thyroid ultrasound
Treatment
It is important to rectify this disorder in the child as it can hinder the growth and development of the child and have an adverse effect on the quality of life.
Hypothyroidism can be treated by hormone replacement therapy, where the deficient thyroid hormones are replenished by administering levothyroxine, a chemical which is identical to thyroxine.
The doctor might also prescribe medication to cure this condition in some cases.
When To Treat Hypothyroidism
Treatment in case of congenital hypothyroidism should be started immediately after the child is born and should be monitored closely. Most cases of congenital hypothyroidism will require lifelong hormone replacement.
In case of acquired hypothyroidism, the start of treatment and the necessary dosage of medicine are dependent on the age and weight of the child with this condition.
Course Of Medical Treatment
If a child is diagnosed with the condition, L-thyroxin is administered as a remedy. Here is a guideline of the recommended dosage. Do remember, however, that a doctor must be consulted before medicine is offered to the child.
1. For acquired hypothyroidism
The course of administering L-thyroxine for acquired hypothyroidism is as follows:
For age group of 1 to 3 years: 4 to 6 mcg/kg once in a day
For age group of 3 to 10 years: 3 to 5 mcg/kg once in a day
For age group of 10 to 16 years: 2 to 4 mcg/kg once in a day
For age group higher than 17 years: 1.6 mcg/kg once in a day
2. For congenital hypothyroidism
For treatment of congenital hypothyroidism, the dosage of L-thyroxine should be 10 to 15 mcg/kg, administered once in a day. The medication should start immediately and should be monitored closely.
Monitoring Of Hypothyroidism Disorder in a Child
Children who suffer from the disorder need to be monitored frequently during the first few years of their life. The monitoring frequency of the disorder is as follows:
First 6 months after birth: Child to be monitored every one to two months
Between 6 months to 3 years from birth: To be monitored every three to four months
From 3 years to end of growth: To be monitored every six to twelve months
Hypothyroidism And Being Overweight
Thyroid hormones are closely related to body composition as they regulate basal metabolism, lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, food intake and fat oxidation. Thyroid dysfunction can lead to changes in body weight and composition.
This disorder leads to decreased thermogenesis, decreased metabolic rate, higher body mass index and obesity. Even subclinical hypothyroidism can lead to significant changes to body weight, resulting in increased risk of obesity.
Challenges for parents
The effects of hypothyroidism in a child can be severe and last for a lifetime. This condition poses a severe challenge for the parents as they need to closely monitor the development of their child, and ensure timely and effective treatment of the disorder and its symptoms.
The treatment is a slow process which can even last for a lifetime. In such situations, it becomes extremely important for the parents to be patient and support their child throughout.
Hypothyroidism is a complex disorder which has a direct effect on the growth and development of a child. It is important to take necessary treatment immediately and continuously so that the child can have a chance to lead a normal life. Proper medication and monitoring can reduce the impact of this condition significantly. Read more

Dr Vandan H Kumar

A. yes
whenever you give any new food to the child you have to take care of two things.
you should give in small quantity. if the child doesn't develop any digestion problem in next 24 hours to 48 hours and the child is able to digest that food then that food can be given again.
but if the child is not able to digestc or there is some problem with vomiting or loose motion or colic pain then kindly avoid that food.
we wait for 2 to 3 days to confirm whether the child is having any problem to that particular food or not
