4 Common Causes of Injuries In Your Baby and How To Keep Him Safe!
An injury to your little one is the biggest nightmare any parent can face! Rightly so, because many children get severely affected by accidents at home, sometimes more than infectious diseases or birth defects. Here is a look at the most common causes for childhood injuries, and how you can prevent them.
As children start growing, they come in contact with the outside world, increasing the risk of them getting hurt. Even though parents are very cautious with their surroundings; childhood injuries are very common and can lead to severe consequences. Moreover, children who suffer severe injuries can carry its memory if they get hurt early on, and it might hamper their holistic development.
Common Causes of Injury
1. Burns
Burns can occur in the house due to various reasons, right from an unattended gas stove or the cute looking diya in the puja room, to electric burns and firecrackers. Some parents put their toddler on the kitchen counter while cooking. Beware, as your child might get hurt by touching the hot utensils.
What To Do
Installing smoke alarms in your house may help you to detect uncontrolled fire immediately. Teach your children what to do in case of a fire emergency. Use safe cooking methods and never leave the stove unattended. Make sure the knobs are closed when not in use and recheck before sleeping. In case of a burn, hold affected area under running cool water, or pour it on the affected area.
2. Drowning
This one might be difficult to fathom, however you don't have to necessarily venture near a pool for a drowning accident. The household bath-tub or bucket may also lead to a drowning accident.
What To Do
You should always accompany your children while they are getting into bathtubs, swimming pools or natural water bodies. Do not let your child be in the bathtub alone. Give your child a proper swimming gear before going to the pool. Do not trust the float with greater depths; make sure your child learns to swim with the help of a trained professional.
3. Falls
Most parents feel happy to see their child fall and get up on her own. Falling is no doubt the way to making your kids independent, but these falls can be dangerous sometimes.
What To Do
Let your child play on a surface which is soft so that the child doesn’t get severely hurt. Prefer to have the playroom carpeted. You could also put a soft mat on the floor and let your child play on it. You need to take extra care if you have stairs in your house or items which your child can bump into. Never leave your baby alone on a bed, changing table or sofa.
4. Poisoning
Just like drowning, poisoning might seem to far-fetched a cause for baby injuries. However, growing babies are forever curious of their surroundings. Once they develop the ability to pick things up, at some of the other point they are going to start putting these things in their mouth. While some can just give your baby an upset tummy, others can lead to poisoning.
What To Do
Medicines should be stored away from the reach of your children, and if possible, keep the cabinet locked. Update your medical kit frequently, and dispose off expired or unused drugs. Syrups should be stored separately, and your child should not have access to such items. Also watch out for common household items that can cause poisoning – like crayons, make-up, household plants, etc.
General Safety Measures
Do not keep small decorative items that your child can swallow and choke his throat.
Be careful with your furniture, and do not let the toddler sleep on a bunk bed for he can easily get hurt by it.
Keep all your cosmetics, body washes and deodorants away from his reach, as he may try to put them in his mouth.
Keep mosquito repellents away from the reach of children.
Buy toys which are suitable for your child’s age, and from a known and certified manufacturer.
Ensure to cover the balcony railing with boards or nets.
Use special devices to close the doors properly, otherwise your child’s finger may get trapped in the doors.
They say experience is the greatest teacher, and it is inevitable that there will be some mishaps in the journey of growing up. All you need to take care and ensure is that the bruises become great memories for both of you. Enjoy every moment of your toddler's growth with the assurance that you have done all that is in your capacity to avoid any unexpected and unpleasant shocks and accidents. Read more

Beware! Is your Make-up Making you Look Older?
Makeup can be essential when you are looking to enhance your beautiful features and hide blemishes. But are you sure that the makeup you're applying is apt for you? There's actually some makeup that makes you look older!
Applying the right makeup in the right way can really set off the glow on your face and improve your complexion. On the other hand, a mistake in choosing or applying makeup can do the dreaded - make you look older. Get your makeup to work wonders by strictly avoiding these makeup mistakes that age you.
Makeup Mistakes you Can't Afford to Make
1. Foundation Blunders
Do you use a foundation that is lighter or darker than your skin tone? Oops. The foundation should be the exact tone as your skin unless you want your skin to appear lifeless or dull and definitely older. Applying too much or too little (or zero!) foundation can also add a sense of age to your skin. Your best bet is to find the foundation that suits your skin tone and dab it on giving special emphasis to areas you feel are discoloured.
2. Lipstick Blues
Nothing is worse than an overly dark lipstick. It gives your lips a small and thin appearance and makes you look older. For a youthful look, you need fuller lips which bright shades of pink, red, and peach can give you. Avoid deep shades like brown, burgundy, maroon and wine; these colours do nothing but add years to your lips.
3. Eyeliner Worries
Eyeliners are a great way to accentuate your eyes and light them up. But did you know that a pitch black eyeliner actually makes your eyes look smaller and hence your overall appearance older? Go for a brown eyeliner instead and blend it with your skin rather than applying it as a line. Also, when using an eyeliner, make sure you apply it to the upper as well as lower eyelids to enhance your lashes.
4. Blushing Horrors
Are you sure that the blush you use accentuates the features on your face? Well, the blush that suits you the most is the exact colour you get when you pinch your skin. A darker blush would make your skin look dull and your face too made up. On the other hand, a blush that is too light will make your skin lifeless and aged.
These are some of the common makeup mistakes that age you. So the next time you set out to buy makeup for yourself, make sure you choose wisely for the perfect look. Surprise your hubby with your glorious glow that doesn't seem to have diminished one bit over the years! Read more

Bullying - Knowing what is right does not mean much unless you do what is right
Bullying scars people for life. It involves one or more people repeatedly and knowingly doing things to make the targeted person afraid or hurt or stressed. It can take place anywhere - in schools and colleges, within family, in working places, online and sometimes by phone too. It can take any form physical, verbal and social.
Kids facing this feel alone, unsafe, stressed, afraid, angry, ashamed and rejected. Bullying is traumatic especially when carried out by relationships that play an important role in shaping a child's behaviour like friends and peers.
The victims feel disconnected from school or work. They have low confidence and low self esteem. They feel unwanted. They suffer from depression and anxiety. They become anti social and are suspicious of others. They close themselves to the outside world. They become extremely emotional and avoid conflicts. Sometimes they take drastic steps like substance abuse and talking their own life.
What a kid can do to avoid being bullied or to not let the bully affect them:
a) Walk away: Just avoid your bully. Appear confident, make eye contact and walk away as if you do not care.
b) Divert your attention: Concentrate on something else like your favourite musical instrument or your favourite costume or your favourite hobby.
c) If being provocated: look into their eyes, laugh, joke about yourself and simply walk away without any additional conversation. Be firm and clear and ask the bullies to stop.
d) Do not fight back as you may get hurt.
e) Get help: you can talk to your teacher or parents school psychologist or even a trusted adult regarding this. So you will not only get help but also feel less lonely and afraid. Both of you can find ways to stop bullying and overcome the negative feelings that the victim is going through.
Parents can help by developing a climate at home that encourages discussion so that it is easier for the kids to open up to their parents. The parents should let their kids know that they will love them no matter what and support them during their difficult times.
f) Never blame yourself and never hurt yourself. You have every right to live in a safe and violence free atmosphere.
g) Do not avoid school or office if you are afraid of the bully. Never give up on your goals.
h) Self awareness: Try to think of all the things that you are good at. Think of your parents and think of all beautiful memories with your family. Work on your self esteem and work on building resilience. Read more

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
